For context, we came here Thursday-Sunday with our two pups for a relaxing read and chill weekend. We've been to Guernville ~10 times prior, but it was our first time at this hotel.
We really, really, really wanted to love the Stavrand and while there are some amazing parts about the property it fell short from the experience we were hoping to have.
The TLDR:
It would be a great place to start and end your day, but not someplace I'd recommend if you want to have a hotel vacation where you stay on-site to relax, especially if you have dogs. Poor water pressure, a broken hot tub, and limited food options (no room service or lunch service) made it hard for us to really relax while we were here.
**Front Desk Staff & Restaurant Staff: 5/5
You can tell these people like their jobs and area treated with respect, because that came through with every interaction. Loved the staff and this is a hallmark of any experience, and why my review is a 4 and not a 3.
**Room: 3/5
We were in room 26, a Cazadero King. It had a nice Juliet balcony with a glass enclosure looking outward was a wonderful view of the trees and downward a view of the neighbor's cedar tub/patio area. The room had a stocked mini-fridge, very comfortable bed, nice furnishings, with an open layout bathroom with sink and shower and a separate enclosed toilet. It's an old building, so there is quite a bit of sound that traveled between rooms and from the walkway outside. This wasn't bothersome for us, but something to note.
The sad part and why it's not a 5/5?
Very poor water pressure and very hard water. It's an old building so I wasn't expecting super soakers, but this was bad.
We ended up only taking one shower while we were there (I know, I know) because we both have medium-sensitive skin and had eczema flair ups and my hair was straw.
**Dog Friendly: 3/5
As other Kimpton hotels, they accommodate dogs, but it didn't seem to be a common occurrence. The staff noted many times how rarely they had dogs come and it made sense. If you absolutely needed to bring your pup, do it, but we wouldn't come here again with our pups as their presence limited what we could do while we were there. Still much better than most places, but nothing like The Sanctuary or Timber Cove for pups where it's a place to go with your pups.
**Grounds: 4/5
Overall, beautiful! The upper path is well groomed and has a beautiful view of the mountains. The chef's meadow was baren, but expected during March, and is a cool part of the property.
Why this wasn't a 5/5?
We were feet away from being impaled by an xmas tree sized branch when on the path through the property (and immaculate and dreamy chef's meadow) to town.
The last stretch of path after you exited the chef's meadow had a very unkept forested area. I cared zero about what it looked like, but it was a hazard. The area has been through a rough few years of rain, wind, and floods this patch of woods reflected much of the rest of the Guernville area and that was one of 2 branches that made it's way down on our walk.
This is an issue seen all over coastal California right now. It's entirely possible they don't own that patch, but if they do just a note to the staff to check for dead trees and broken branches.
**Housekeeping: 5/5
Immaculate, quick, & responsive.
