The Stein Inn

I stayed at Stein Inn on the Isle of Skye for one night. The room was cozy and very clean, though a bit small — but perfectly fine for a short stay. The location is beautiful, with a lovely view right over the water. I also really enjoyed the bar; it has great Scottish vibes and a very welcoming atmosphere. My only suggestion would be to offer a few more snack options to go with wine or beer. Overall, a charming place and worth a visit!

Great pub. Great food. Fab room and really good staff.|Had a stay on a cold damp November night , but the real fire was roaring and food was to die for. Seafood chowder, wild pigeon salad followed by haunch of venison and seared sea bass. Really good Orkney ale and fab Malbec. Very dog friendly , Stanley loved his stay.|A full Scottish breakfast the following morning was a real treat. A must visit on the Isle of Skye.

In our short visit to the Isle of Skye back in 2019, we made a beeline for The Stein Inn for a hearty meal. The inn is a true Skye classic, dating back to 1790. The fish we sampled was outstanding: crispy yet tender, having just the right texture. Every bite tasted local, sustainable and super fresh. Portions were generous too! The decor is pure Highland charm; warm fireside glow from the crackling open log fire and cosy nooks that make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The place was welcoming and full of character.

Best Fish and Chips, Fresh Haddock, perfectly battered and homemade tartar sauce. The mushy peas with fresh mint were excellent. My Wife enjoyed the mussel pot so fresh and tasty. Great atmosphere loved the local vibe, and the service was outstanding.

We couldn’t make it to our evening ferry to Raasay due to Storm Amy and suddenly found ourselves stranded on the Isle of Skye with no hotel available. The Stein Inn absolutely saved us! Even though it was already 10 PM, they kindly prepared a room for us at the very last minute without hesitation and welcomed us with so much warmth and care. They even offered us something to eat that late in the evening — it truly turned our day around. The hotel itself is outstanding: the room was perfect, the location right by the sea is stunning, and the whole place is decorated with so much love and attention to detail. The food was excellent, and every member of staff went to make us feel comfortable. If you’re looking for a small, authentic Scottish hotel with a heart, great food, and an unforgettable atmosphere, this is the place to stay.

My family and I had a fantastic meal at The Stein Inn this afternoon. The food was absolutely delicious, especially the mussels, which we can highly recommend. They were incredibly fresh and full of flavor. The vegetarian option, a pea risotto, was also excellent: Creamy, well-balanced, and beautifully presented. The atmosphere in the pub is cozy and authentic, with a warm, welcoming interior that makes the whole experience feel special. It’s truly a unique location with lots of character. The service was friendly, attentive, and made us feel very welcome throughout our visit. We would definitely recommend booking a table in advance, as this is a popular spot. For good reason!

Sensational food. We weren’t going to order crab, but Kenneth (very friendly waiter) recommended it and it was amazing. We also thought the smoked fish starter was fantastic and the sticky toffee pudding was a great dessert We paid more than double the price for dinner elsewhere and this was far better. Cool to see the seafood getting caught out of the window in the bay

We didn’t stay, just came for dinner - book in advance because they get busy! Stunning food in an amazing location (it was getting dark and rainy when we arrived but we were still able to appreciate it) The food was amazing, goats cheese Bon Bon to start was a real highlight. They have a huge seafood menu which can be taken as starters or main, plus plenty of other options. I had the mussels which were absolutely delicious, and my husband really enjoyed his steak. We shared the sticky toffee pudding which was huge but one of the best I’ve ever had!

Noted as oldest pub in the Isle of Skye and a few doors down from Lochbay (has a Michelin star). An ideal, charming pub on the Lochbay. The mussels and seafood come from the boat you can see on the Loch. That fresh!!! A nice variety of Scottish ales, gins, whisky', etc and casual, old decor. The fish and chips great and huge. The mussels come in two ways. The lighter version with apples, tea, tarragon, and radishes. So good and see pic. Great Cullen skink. You can also have a beer out front on loch at picnic tables.

We only came in for a pint and to use the restroom on our way back from doing the hike at Coral Beach and then stopping by an art studio, but the place looked and felt like you wanted a classic Scottish pub to. The bartender was incredibly nice. The space was dark and homey with wood details, a nice fireplace, but also windows looking out at the water. The Guinness they poured tasted amazing and was even better sitting on the bench outside while the kids ran around. Honestly, I wish we'd sat down for longer. I've spent a fair amount of time exploring the rest of Skye trying to find the same feel anywhere else.

We stopped in for a drink before dinner and sat at the bar. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable, and the prices were reasonable. Our only regret was that we didn't plan a meal here as the menu looked highly local, and the plates coming from the kitchen smelled delicious.

We stayed at an Airbnb nearby and were recommended to go to Stein Inn for good pub food...we were not disappointed! It's set in a quaint old stone building and has 2 rooms of tables with a lovely fireplace between the two. Order drinks from the bar, per pub standards in the area. For food, I tried their award winning black pudding (my first time trying it!) and it was honestly delicious. Served over a fresh salad with a honey grainy mustard dressing, I could eat 2 of them. I made a meal off the black pudding and the mussels starter (£7) which cane with complimentary bread/butter, and all were excellent. We had way better food here than we did at some highly rated restaurants in Edinburgh and London! My friends steak was a thin cut so difficult to hit the medium rare ordered she ordered (it came more well done) but she still thoroughly enjoyed it. If we had more time in Skye we would be back!

We spent the night on Skye staying across the way (up the road a mile) in Waternish and found The Stein Inn was the only place open for dinner on a Sunday, so off we went! We arrived at 6:00 and found dinner was served at 6:30 so we'd have to wait at the bar prior to being seated. We grabbed a few drinks and waited for our name to be called. A few minutes before 6:30 we were seated at our table in an adjoining dining room and left to our menus. They had a nice selection of entrees and some yummy looking appetizers! We started with a small appetizer of deep fried breaded garlic mushrooms. They were delish! And super prompt to boot! I chose the 8oz Highland Steak with whisky cream sauce and my husband chose the filet of Scottish salmon. Both were cooked very well. The plating leaves a bit to be desired, but nothing I'd discredit them for. It's just a place centered more around the food and conversation than the presentation. Oh, and for anybody not native to the area - when you order a drink from the bar you have to go up yourself. There is a number on a brass plate on the edge of the table and you give that to the bartender where your drinks are placed on the tab. Ta da! The desert was what I'd come for time and time again here though! Our adorable waitress recommended the apple crumble which is beyond description. Just a place full of amazing. Sigh. A cozy place, a great view and yummy food in Skye!

Stayin' in? Then go and put your feet up in the snug Stein Inn at Stein on the western shores of the Waternish peninsula. The Stein Inn is an oasis amidst the refreshment wilderness that is, happily, northern Skye. The remoteness and general lack of amenities in this part of the world, compared to say the tea room addled Lake District or the pub-ridden moors of the Peak District, accentuate the hospitality of the place. Stein itself is a smattering of buildings strung mainly along the very edge of the western coast of Skye's most central northerrly peninsula. On one side of the narrow road: buildings. On the other: the sea. My attention was first drawn to it because if you're driving up the hilly coast towards Flora's grave and the old chapel, preparing for a walk to the tip of the headland to look out across The Minch to the Outer Hebrides, it's really hard not to crash the car when drawn to incredibly idyllic and curvacious bays and inlets that characterise that part of the landscape. Down a long and windy road lies the Inn itself. The main room is long and low and has something of a nautical, cabin feel to it. The tables and chairs are cluttered closely together as though engaged in some sort of conspiratorial furiture conference. We made our allegiances with a couple of chairs and tables and holed up for the only day of our trip that was a complete wash out weather-wise. A great, laid back venue it made too. We sampled the beer - they stock great beers from Isle of Skye brewery (based up the road in Uig) including Reeling Deck, brewed specifically for and only available at Stein Inn. And we drank their excellent teas and coffees while fumbling over the clues in another Gaurdian Quick Crossword. The afternoon melted by amidst frequent stares through the rain soaked window to our left and out across the misty Little Minch towards Harris. At every moment the scene appeared to change. We ended up staying and eating in the restaurant adjacent to the main room. The meals were okay - there was nothing wrong with the food or the service, yet nothing particularly memorable or exciting either: much is the cullinary case for Skye in general, I've found. The Inn also includes a small child's playroom just off the main bar and lounge. You could imagine RL Stevenson hauling up at the end of the jetty on a scooner in gale force winds, bursting in through the heavy wooden door and sipping a warming single malt whilst sea water dripped from the cuffs of his so'wester.

We ate here twice while staying near Waternish. Atmosphere was really cozy and comfortable. There is a double sided fireplace in the bar area and we sat directly beside it...wonderful after a cold hike to the Coral Beach. The food was good, I mean we did go back a second time. I had mac and cheese the first night (good, but not the best I've ever had), and Scottish beef in red wine sauce (which turned out to be more like a Sunday roast in the states - tender beef with potatoes and carrots in red wine gravy) which was really tasty. The service left something to be desired. While I realize that you have to ask for the check rather than the server coming to see if you want it, it is easier to ask for the check if the server ever makes another appearance after bringing your food. We were in the back part of the bar area, and no one even stuck their head around the corner. There was another table in that section - people who were actually staying at the Inn - and someone came and took their plates and asked if they wanted dessert but ignored us completely, even when we tried to get her attention. When I went to the bar to ask for the check, he told me to sit back down and someone would come see me...when they did, I was told to pay the check at the bar. Moral of the story...sit somewhere that you can see the bar and flag someone down.

Beautiful old Inn on the bay-side where we enjoyed an amazing sunset. The atmosphere inside is very warm and friendly and the food is decent. A must see when on Isle of Skye.

The Stein is a fantastic place in a remote area on the Isle of Skye, although it is certainly not the most remote! The first thing that strikes you upon entering is the warmth and this is thanks to a large open fire in the center of the pub which makes it a great place to be in winter. The selection of real ales is good and they are always very well kept, as are the lagers. As you may expect the selection of wines is not amazing, but there will be something to accommodate most tastes. The menu was smaller than I had hoped but all the classics are present and they are all cooked very well.

The Stein Inn is a wonderful, traditional pub in an incredibly beautiful setting on the waterside. They have a good selection of whiskies and ales. The food was also pretty good. It was lovely to sit by the fireside and get away from the rain.

Went to Stein Inn anticipating trying some interesting whiskys, since their website shows an extensive whisky list which they are supposedly proud of. Not really being a whisky connoisseur, I asked the bartender if he could recommend an interesting whisky that I probably couldn't get back home (USA). He could care less. He just started pointing to various whiskys on the shelf all of which are commonly available all over. I tried to engage him by telling him what type of whisky I liked (e.g. peaty), but he didn't seem the least bit interested. I asked if there was a list of whiskys (I had seen one on the website) and he said there wasn't one. A disappointing experience. An extra star because the food wasn't bad.
