The Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters (Strossmayerova galerija starih majstora)

Beautiful Virgin to the child works of art dating from the 15/16th century. The rest of the museum is less breathtaking. It is a pity that the labels are only in Croatian and that they don't state the material used. Some more information on art history and the Virgin to the child pattern would be very appreciated. Plan 45 min to 1 h for the visit.

In 1876 Josip Juraj Strossmayer, the rich and powerful Bishop of Ðakovo and one of the leading proponents of a pan-Slav movement, had this gallery built to house the Academy of Arts and Sciences and later the Gallery of Old Masters, to which he donated his own impressive collection of about 750 works of art. The Neo-Renaissance building has a large internal porticoed courtyard. Nine rooms on the upper floor house around a hundred works from the major European schools from the 14th to the 19th century. Behind the building is a large statue of Bishop Strossmayer sculpted by Ivan Meštrović in 1926.

Esternamente il restauro è finito. Quando ci siamo passati noi comunque non era accessibile. Rimaniamo comunque un esempio importante di architettura a Zagabria.

Man konnte das Gebäude nicht komplett sehen da es restauriert wurde. Es scheint aber ein wirklich schönes Gebäude zu sein...wenn man es googled und sich dort die Bilder anschaut

Chiuso con altri 7 musei a fine agosto in pratica chi come me e venuto qui nn ha nulla da vedere ! Chi gestisce le belle arti e turismo a Zagabria andrebbe licenziato un vero incompetente ! Vergogna !
