"A characterful yellow inn with an appealing shabby-chic style, located in a picturesque spot in the heart of Constable Country. The highly seasonal menu offers generous Mediterranean-inspired dishes and the well-chosen wine list offers plenty by the glass. Bedrooms are cosy – two have a modern New England style." - Michelin Inspector

The Sun Inn, Dedham, Essex, England - Explore & Book

"The Sun Inn has always been at the centre of Dedham village life, from its origins as a late medieval coaching inn then bustling 18th-century tavern, to a hotel post-war. Piers Baker, a young London pub manager, was looking for a rural escape, and discovered this (by now) run-down swirly-carpeted pub and spotted it was ripe for an elegant restoration. In 2003 The Sun Inn reopened with a new buttercup-yellow exterior and a welcoming dining room in the revamped stables. Daily changing menus feature local produce given a Mediterranean twist. The convivial bar offers local craft beers and a remarkable wine list. Upstairs, 7 romantic rooms have been transformed with heritage paint colours, good-quality bathroom fittings and pocket-sprung beds, yet retain their centuries-old identities. Through the original coaching arch there's a sociable terrace and a large pub garden, useful for families. Stroll through the village, take a boat out on the River Stour, visit the church, admire (almost) unchanged Constable views across the Water Meadows, and return to the Inn for the best of English hospitality. Highs Dedham is the quintessential picture-postcard English village, whose setting defines Constable countryDelicious local fare served in the restaurant, plus a great wine list - all reasonably pricedThe Inn has character, history and charm in spadesFriendly, unpretentious and smiley service (we found the place packed with locals, always a good sign)Easily found, just a few minutes off the A12, and under 2 hours from London Lows Not for fans of straight lines, immaculate finishes and non-sloping floorsNoise from the bar and restaurant does travel up to the rooms (Dovecot and Butchers are probably the quietest) but only until closing timeSome rooms are smallDon't expect oodles of amenitiesIt's on the main road, but traffic is light" - Nadine Mellor

Lovely dinner at the Sun Inn - it never disappoints. Great service, the staff is so welcoming and the food always excellent. So pleased to have this wonderful pub in the village.

Food was absolutely amazing. We both ordered the chicken breast in mascarpone sauce with baby potatoes, leek, pancetta, peas and asparagus.

Went for a midweek meal out with a friend here - was very impressed with food and service. Wasn't feeling that hungry so we went straight to mains, really lovely food and in the case of the fish and chips that I had, there was a lot of it! I have to give a special mention to the smashed peas that came with it, they were awesome - think I could have had a meal of just those, they were so nice! We finished our meal outside with some hot drinks, although I was very tempted with desert - too full for the cheese and biscuits offering (that sounded great) and unfortunately, they ran out of cheesecake... perhaps next time...! Parking (if driving) is a bit of a pain, there is a small car park, but otherwise it's a case of finding a suitable space out on the road. Look forward to trying this again, maybe with the family...!

23rd August Myself & 3 friends met for lunch & a catch-up. As ever the atmosphere very pleasant, especially so as we sat out in the courtyard which was very relaxing. The food was exceptional, staff very helpful & friendly. Always such a pleasant experience to eat here. Myself & 2 friends came for lunch today as a belated birthday get together. The atmosphere was friendly & relaxed. Lots of people were visiting for lunch too as well as a couple with their very well behaved dog. We chose 3 different dishes & they were the absolutely delicious. I was amazed with the flavours of the lasagne which were really incredible. Never eaten a dish like it!

Went here today after finding out the other local pub wasn’t serving roast dinners for the summer. Best decision we made to come to the Sun instead. The roast was one of the best I’ve ever had. Good amount of food and very friendly service. Will now be our go to for roasts on Sundays!

Very good roast dinner, just slightly dry Yorkshire puddings. Our group enjoyed our Sunday late afternoon visit sitting in the outside courtyard. Very friendly and polite staff! Relaxed atmosphere.

Went here for lunch with the parents and it was fantastic. All freshly made and delicious food. High quality. Worth the wait and the money. Plus staff were friendly and helpful. Lovely pub atmosphere with good seating and plenty of light.

A very quant and unassuming local pub that exceeded all expectations from quality of food, the attentive service and the high quality of hygiene. The starter of crispy duck egg with Chorizo and Asparagus was an absolute delight, the pie was perfectly baked, fish and chips was so light. Along with the pie came a side of seasonal veggies which was exceptional as the attentiveness of the service they split out the butter seasoning due to personal allergies. Would highly recommend coming and booking in advance, we walked in and was very lucky to get a lovely spacious table tucked away. Thank you very much for everything, keep up the exceptional work, we will be back!

Yelp
Visited twice this week for an excellent beer festival selection. Perfectly kept and presented ales, served with a smile and chat. Lunched on Saturday, with a superb Portobello Mushroom sandwich, which was delicious and left us wondering why anyone bothers with planet-destroying meat at all! Only small negative generally is the focus on food and booked tables which sometimes makes it hard to grab a table just for drinks. Need to keep bookings to a dedicated area with the rest allocated on a first come basis. It's a pub after all, not a restaurant. Otherwise, great place and highly recommended.

Yelp
Sorry the starters the crackling was so hard I could not eat it it was like a hammer it wasn't crackling it was just so hard to break your teeth on it And the pork belly was very small but I must omit the roast potatoes were very nice

Yelp
Awesome meal as always. Lots of fish specials as well as the regular menu. The cheese board is my favourite - fab selection and the biscuits are scummy. Drinks too are great, red wine is always at the right temperature. Staff are courteous and attentive. Will be back for sure xxx

Yelp
Good honest pub food done really well, good portion sizes and real value for money. Many other far more expensive places around should take note, bar staff and waiting staff very friendly and nothing is ever too much trouble. My family and I visit as often as we can, delicious!
