New Restaurant Surfing Fox Opens This Week in Busy Santa Monica | Eater LA

"Just steps from the Santa Monica Pier, I visited the Surfing Fox, a casual newcomer opening on Tuesday, August 15 on the ground floor of the new Pierside Hotel at 120 Colorado Avenue. The long street-side patio tucked under swaying trees, a glowing corner bar and a breezy indoor dining room—wrapped in surf-culture accents and California ephemera—give it an indoor-outdoor vibe meant to pull the restaurant into the greater neighborhood and make it a fine (and fast) stop for locals, tourists, and everyone else. Chef David Yamaguchi (Chulita) oversees a menu that moves between ceviche, Caesar salad, a burger, fried chicken sandwich, and fish tacos, with distinctive touches like a koji brine on the chicken, Oaxacan spices, and a roasted half-chicken with coconut sauce and green sambal; espresso, La Colombe coffee, pastries and breakfast plates are served daily, cocktails start at $17 and glasses of wine at $14, and the opening menus even include dog-friendly offerings. The plan is to activate different areas of the space throughout the day—from sunny morning coffee to a lively night at the bar—while diners lounging outside can take in views to the pier and beyond, and the location sits right by a Metro stop and within sight of the ocean." - Farley Elliott

Raise your hand if you run the most dog-friendly restaurant in Santa Monica! I'm sure the Surfing Fox owner would raise their hand proudly. They're pretty good at taking care of their human customers, too. We ventured to the eatery on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch. As one might expect, it was pretty quiet. We sat outside since we brought our dog, so most of the ambiance was brought by the people walking towards the pier. However, I can see this being a cool place to hang out during happy hour once the work crowd starts coming in. I forgot the name of our server, but he seemed to be the only person working in the front of the house. He was everywhere: seating people, taking orders, behind the bar, everywhere. Thankfully, it was quiet enough that you didn't notice him being gone too long, or he wasn't unavailable when you needed him. The food was good. I ordered the hot chicken sandwich, and my wife grabbed a poke bowl. We thought well of both, though they weren't that special. The portions are on the smaller side, so this is a place where you wouldn't go wrong ordering an appetizer. I'll end this review where I started it. The Surfing Fox loves hounds. They have a dedicated dog menu (we got our pup a protein bowl, and she was very excited), and they brought water for our dog without prompting. All in all, if you're near Ocean Ave, I recommend stopping by The Surfing Fox.

The Surfing Fox has a beautiful ambience in Downtown Santa Monica! With a bar / lounge setting, comfy indoor patio style seating, it is the perfect place for some engaging conversation and comfort food! The servers where helpful and attentive. The ceviche was absolutely divine! Made with halibut, onions, red peppers, avocado and mandarin orange citrus, in a Peruvian spiced, robust sauce, I couldn't get enough of this dish! Served with delicious, housemade chips, it's a surefire go to I also had a medium wear a burger and fries with sides of ketchup and aioli sauce. Again, delicious! My friend ordered the mussels which looked nice, but we're lacking in flavor and a little disappointing. For fans of mocktails, their strawberry spritzer and hibiscus mixer were thirst quenching and bright with floral flavor. I definitely recommend this place while you're in Santa Monica.

I come here all the time because I’m at this hotel once a month. The staff is super friendly, the bartender is really cool. They have a decent drink selection and fun menu items. I always get the street corn focaccia and the ceviche. We got the fish and chips this time which was really tasty. Parking is kinda tough if you’re not staying at the hotel because this place is like seconds from the Santa Monica pier. Cool vibes, very fun beachy interior. I like this place a lot.

Google
Stayed at the attached hotel and ate here for 5 meals, mainly breakfast. Honestly, all the meals were delicious with my favorite being the breakfast burrito. The portions and flavors are all there. Also got to enjoy their flights and an espresso martini from the bar - the bartenders are great. If you are staying at the Pierside, this is a no brainer!

Google
Great food with homemade sauces and cocktails, friendly bartenders and atmosphere. My favorite foods were the overnight oats, breakfast burrito and the Ceviche, which I had to have a second time, and was still amazing. They have a nice collection of cocktails including the non-alcoholic ones— highly recommend the strawberry spritz with prosecco.

I absolutely loved this place! Located within the hotel, the restaurant had a surprisingly cozy atmosphere that made it feel intimate and welcoming. The vibes were very relaxed, and the service was efficient, making our dining experience enjoyable. We tried various dishes, and each one was better than the last. The prices were reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food. Definitely recommend the prawn toasts from the appetiser section. To top it off, the restaurant is very dog-friendly, even offering a special menu for pups! Parking can be a bit challenging, which is typical for Santa Monica, so I recommend looking for street parking on Main Street or utilizing one of the nearby parking lots.

Really cozy spot a block from the beach. Cushy seats with pillows. Breakfast sandwich was great with a really soft brioche bun. The salmon toast did not skimp on the salmon! Tasty chai latte and super nice staff. Highly recommend.

The Surfing Fox is located in Santa Monica inside the Pierside Hotel. One block from the Santa Monica Pier. One block from the Santa Monica Mall. Directly across the street from McDonald's. Metered parking on Main Steeet until 9pm ($6 for 3 hours). Local lots available as well -price will vary. What we tried - Ceviche w/Mandarin Tigre De Leche - didn't try, not a raw fish person, but it was a hit with fellow party goers Spring Pea Falafel w/Thai Green Curry - presentation was spot-on, but, it's an acquire taste for sure Hot Chicken Sliders w/ Oaxacan Spices - the pickled cabbage made this slider a hit for me, the Oaxacan spices paired well with the pickled cabbage Chicken Drumettes w/ Coconut Sauce and Green Sambal - the rice was delicious and the drumette was good, not overcooked or dry. A bit more seasoning for the drumette would of made this the perfect side kick to the rice Pros 1. Presentation of dishes was beautiful. Mini size decorated plates of delicious looking food :) 2. Indoor and outdoor seating with heating lamps available. The indoor seating is surrounded by a large bar. Booth and tabletop seating. The outdoor seating is also right off Colorado Blvd. During the evening sunset this would be a great seat option. 3. Decor is minimal but nice. Clean lines and the chairs are comfortable. Bohemian style is what I am reminded of. 4. Servers were friendly and personable. 5. Variety in the menu for different pallettes. I can appreciate the vast difference in entrees offered. Cons 1. Parking is challenging because of the location but not impossible. Overall, The Surfing Fox is in a prime location with good food, service, and friendly staff - I'll be back!

Yelp
I tried to call ahead but their recording didn't allow me to speak to a human. Awful. Hey, Surfing Fox, let people call your establishment to ask a question so they don't waste their time and you don't end up with reviews like this. Other reviews seemed to indicate they are accommodating to gluten free diet so I decided head over. Got there and no gluten free bread. And they were out of falafel, which is the one other item on the menu I was interested in. Pretty bad experience all in all.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick brunch and was pleasantly surprised. The menu had a good variety of options to choose from. I ordered the avocado toast, which was fresh and delicious, while my mother had the breakfast burrito and said it was excellent. Service was friendly and attentive, and overall we were very happy with our meal. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
The Surfing Fox is located on the first floor of the Pierside Hotel, which is literally by the Santa Monica pier. The restaurant is trendy, clean, and felt very much like a vacation. Service was friendly. Food, however, was just okay. The American breakfast was disappointing in terms of flavor and presentation. I requested for scrambled eggs but got a large piece of dry egg crepe lol (see picture). As for the potatoes, they were so bland and lacked seasoning. Breakfast plates usually come with a piece of toast but not at Surfing Fox. I had to order a side of sourdough to eat with the avocado slices that I substituted for meats.

Yelp
The space is airy and well-ventilated. I found it a little cavernous and the live music too loud when I arrived. But once the space filled up a bit, the sound was dampened enough for me to hear my dinner companions. Our server was friendly and graciously offered to take our orders separately so we could each receive individual checks. The food and drinks were only OK. I had the Honeydew Refresher (N/A) and the pea falafel with green curry sauce. The falafel was a bit mushy, but it was surprisingly filling for there only being 4 pieces. I liked the flavor of the curry.

Yelp
Our server was the best! My husband and I were enjoying our staycation in Santa Monica and chose this restaurant based on proximity and also because it was a dog friendly establishment. I ordered fish tacos, my husband got the chicken sandwich and our puppy Edwin got the barkuterie. What is a barkuterie you ask? Why, it's a charcuterie for your doggie! It came with protein (chicken, rice and veggies), a frozen broth bone, pawsicle (berries and frozen yogurt) and a couple bine treats. That was the highlight of our dinner. Watching our cute little (some may say spoiled) puppy eating and enjoying his meal. Bonus points because it also kept him occupied for about 15 minutes! My fish tacos were very good and so was my hubbys chicken sandwich. The barkuterie was actually a lot of food for our 8 month old dachshund. It's the same serving size for whatever breed your dog is so just something to keep in mind. Overall, a really good experience here. Our waitress was so accommodating and I really loved being able to order off the menu for our pup.

Yelp
Came here to catch up with a good friend. Everyone was great--though the bearded greeter seemed a bit off. Maybe just an off day. Overall: - Chill atmosphere - Good service (Heidi was awesome) - Roomie with comfy seats - Good food

Yelp
The event at the SURFING FOX is outstanding. It's great to be an elite and enjoy meeting such nice people in such a super nice restaurant environment. I'll definitely come back to this restaurant after the event to patronize them because the food is very good. Sarah did an outstanding job with organizing this event.! Thanks Richard L

Yelp
Great location, just steps away from the pier. We sat outside to take advantage of the beautiful weather, which made the experience even better. We started with the peppers as an appetizer--delicious! For mains, we had the spicy chicken sandwich and the burger. The chicken sandwich was flavorful with just the right amount of heat. Unfortunately, the burger was a bit overcooked, which was a letdown. For drinks, we had the cucumber cocktail and an Old Fashioned--both were well-crafted. Overall, it was a solid lunch spot. I'd definitely recommend it, especially if you're looking to enjoy a meal outdoors.

Yelp
I ordered a burger and it was very dry , with no seasoning it was seasoned you can not taste it . Also there was no sign anywhere that they didn't take cash and that's all I had on me so after they came n gave me my check I gave it back with a decent tip and they said they couldn't take it . Eventually they did because I really didn't have another option on me, but they should put a sign up in the front so people know .

Yelp
Just an absolutely mediocre time here, from service to food, for a late Sunday lunch. Perhaps we were less attended to as we were a touch later than the rush, coming at 2pm, but wouldn't that make it easier for our server to give us some attention? She was lackadaisical and disinterested. As in, when she brought us two iced teas with ZERO ice in it, and when I asked for ice on the side, turned and went to get it with no expression, left so fast that she then got to go back to the bar for straws (the icky paper kind), because she ran off so quickly - oh and didn't offer lemon nor sweetener. She only checked on us once, and we had to wave her down for the check, and to pay. And we were her only table by 1/2 way through our meal. Food itself was just okay. Mac and cheese got cold and glob like very fast, so unless you will wolf it down, skip it. The fish tacos were tasteless. Kale salad was made with kale leaves so fibrous that it was like grazing in a field. This and the two "iced" teas ran just over $80 with tip. Ridiculous. A plus is that doggos are allowed in the restaurant, as well as the patio. Minus is that the patio is just a railed off area on a pretty busy street. Oh and the bathroom is inside the hotel, but that's not too far, just a few steps past the back restaurant door. Decor is fun beach vibe with Cali flare. TL/dr: Better places to dine in touristy SM than this, especially if you want service.

Yelp
Service was excellent, and the atmosphere was great. The fish taco was decent, but the poke bowl was absolutely delicious. The bread was freshly made, served hot and soft with side of flavored butter a nice touch to the meal.

Yelp
The food is less than mediocre and very expensive. One of my guests got the chicken sandwich,It was very oily and he was feeling sick all day after eating.. Never again

Yelp
Such a fantastic spot! The vibe is laid-back yet stylish, with a beachy feel that instantly puts you in a good mood. The food was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented every bite felt thoughtful and unique. Drinks were creative and refreshing, perfect for the setting. Service was warm, attentive, and made the experience even better. Definitely one of those places you'll want to come back to again and again!

Yelp
Just a few steps from the Santa Monica Pier, The Surfing Fox offers an indoor and outdoor beach vibe. Although the restaurant is connected to the Pier Side Hotel, it has its dedicated space. A large parking structure is across the street. The ambiance is excellent, and the decor has a beachy vibe. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating offers large couches and tables. We decided to sit inside and enjoy the beautiful couch swings. Food: We started with the ceviche, it was so good! What makes this ceviche unique is the mandarin-coconut leche de tigre. I don't think I've ever had a ceviche like this. After our ceviche, my boyfriend ordered the lobster roll, which he was pleased with. His order came with Cajun fries, which had a spicy kick. I ordered the fantastic hot chicken sandwich! It's one of the best chicken sandwiches I've ever had. I finished all of it. Lol. My son had the kid's cheeseburger. Drinks: I ordered their famous Prickly Pear 9/10, which was refreshing. I also ordered the NA Mint Fizz, which was so-so. Our waitress was great, and the food took a bit longer, but it was ok. The food made up for the wait time. If you are in the Santa Monica area and looking for a great place to eat and have drinks, I recommend this place. Skip the other pier restaurants!

Yelp
Cute, trendy restaurant near the pier across the street from McDonald's and the mall. We happen to be in the area for happy hour and decided to stop in for a quick drink. They have a really cute outdoor seating area. You can either love it or hate it because of the abundance of people and tourists walking by as the location is a block away from the Santa Monica Pier. However the happy hour menu was well priced for the area. I had a spicy margarita for $12 and it was good! We decided to nibble on some spicy furikake fries and that alone sold me. 5+ stars. I love fries and this was by far the best I've had this year. I'm 100% going back to try some of their other dishes, maybe a. burger next time. We often take the Expo metro line to Santa Monica and this would just be a 3 minute walk so we're definitely heading back soon. Oh and service was good! The bartender from inside was also manning the outdoor area and we didn't feel neglected. I'm not sure if they offer valet but if you are driving in and open to parking in the 90 minute free lot at the mall, that's what I would do. It would be a short 5 minute walk as long as you exit on the side of Colorado/2nd.

Yelp
The Surfing Fox is located within the Pierside Santa Monica hotel. When we visited around lunchtime, the restaurant was quite empty. The outdoor seating looked cool and would be a great option during nice weather. While the food and drinks were good, the portions felt pretty small for the price. Additionally, the service was very slow for being so empty. The ceviche was delicious for an app. I tried the lobster roll and thought it was good, but nothing to rave about. The location is great if you want to walk over to Santa Monica pier afterwards. There are several parking garages around as well.

Yelp
Came in on a lunch break by myself and sat at the bar worked by Sesai. He was incredibly kind and welcoming, and had solid recommendations despite that he had only started recently. Amidst a health inspection, and lunch rush he had to run solo Sesai held down the whole joint by himself, balancing bar, host, bus, and serving. Food took a little long to receive but I suspect it was due to the other staff not seeming to be around. Food was good and much more filling than anticipated. Fries were top notch. To management: your sales guy was stalking around the dining room and zoning out the windows. As Sesai was juggling 4 hats, he did nothing to help and did nothing to help "sell" the restaurant to those eating there for the first time. I was weirded out enough that I had to ask about him as he made me quite uncomfortable. If he spent less time staring out into the street, maybe he'd notice the support needed indoors to leave everyone with a positive impression.

Yelp
Great Food, Good Service, and a Lively Atmosphere! I recently visited TSF after completing a nice walk and and had a fantastic experience. Open air vineyards in the old Wyndham hotel completely redone. Food was delicious, American bar food with a menu offering a variety of tasty options that catered to different tastes. Each dish was well-prepared and flavorful. The service was good . Our bartender Jeff was attentive, friendly, and made excellent recommendations. Live music, vibe of the place was lively and inviting. The ambiance struck a perfect balance between casual and beach chic, making it an ideal spot for both a relaxed meal or a special night out. Overall, TSF exceeded my expectations, and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a great dining experience. Looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
I booked an outdoor table for 9:30 AM. Arrived on time, texted at 9:38 while waiting. Finally seated at 9:45 -- patio is nice, comfortable seating. I ordered a drink, asked for recommendations, and ordered avocado toast with an egg and side of bacon around 9:55. From that point on -- no updates, no check-ins. I watched the server pass by my table multiple times while serving other tables. No communication, no sign of my order. At 11:05 AM, still no food, I finally got up and walked inside. I asked to take my order to-go -- the server brought me an empty to-go box and bag, assuming I'd already been served. In reality, my order had never been made. I canceled the food, paid for my drink (which I had consumed), and stood for several minutes while asking to speak with someone in charge. The chef, standing in as manager, eventually came out with a hollow apology -- no accountability, no real effort to make the situation right. The lack of care or concern was obvious -- from both the server and chef. Poor service and an attitude that made it clear they didn't value my time as a guest. This was my experience -- I'm sharing it here so others are aware. I won't be back.

Yelp
Everything was great! Quick service and good food. George, our server was fun to talk to. It's inside the hotel so def had a casual yet upscale vibe. We came for breakfast and the food was great. I got avocado toast and my husband got the burrito. Parking structure across the street on corner. Will come back for sure!

Yelp
This is a cozy and cool restaurant attached to the Pierside hotel. The interior is beautifully beachy and you will feel like you're on vacation! Our brunch was delicious and came out pretty quickly; the ceviche was our favorite. We also grabbed cocktails at night that hit the spot. Service is friendly and helpful. Definitely a spot to check out!

Yelp
We came here for brunch. Great airy ambience with friendly and accommodating staff. Breakfast burritos and sandwiches were good. Decent portion. Prices in line with the somewhat touristy location. I would go back if I was in the area. They even have this cute area with a fireplace.

Yelp
The vibe of this adorable restaurant is California chic. The cocktails are tasty, unique and crafted with care by friendly bartenders. We were delighted to find that this place still honors the happy hour from 5pm until 7pm! Thank you so much for this! We ordered the Kale Salad w chicken, fries, Brussels sprouts and a variety of craft cocktails and all were excellent. Their salad dressing, sauces and aiolis are innovative and delicious. What a find across from the pier. Don't eat at the Pier, come here!

Yelp
Surfing Fox is a very good find in Santa Monica! It is in the main corridor, a short walk off the beach, and has great food and drinks at reasonable prices. I highly recommend happy hour, M-F, 3-7 pm. Several good food and drink specials. We had drinks and the crispy Brussels sprouts, and they were terrific. Our tender, Jeff, was very personable and attentive. We liked this place so much that we recommended it to our daughter who lives in Santa Monica. Location, ambiance, service and food/drink were all great!

Yelp
Had a celebratory brunch for my best friend's birthday. Great tasting food, lovely ambiance, friendly service. I would recommend. We loved our appetizers: edamame hummus and shishito peppers. The cocktails were nice and strong. (Hate when I order a cocktail and it tastes like a mocktail) Our main dishes were all delicious. The steak was tender and juicy. Delicious sweet potatoes. Lobster roll and fries? YUM. I'm only disappointed in the Caulilini plate. The portion was lacking. Because it's only vegetables, I feel the portion could've been bigger to really fill my belly. Mireya provided the best service and recommendations. She really was essential in this birthday brunch. Thank you for surprising our friend for his birthday. That cookies and ice cream dessert was delicious!

Yelp
It was a nice quiet place away from the pier. We went at the happy hour. But most of the foods we wanted were on the regular menu. The hamburger was good , and the cocktails were refreshing.

Yelp
Great service- lovely and knowledgeable bartender - yummy food - drinks and nice ambiance. Cute little spot for lunch or brunch if you are near the Pier

Yelp
Went here for brunch and the interior was so adorable! Very boho beach vibes and fun setups for seating. There was no wait and we got to ordering our cocktails. The yuzu ~foxtail~ was very refreshing and we both ordered the chilaquiles with chicken. This dish was a good portion size which is good because the pricing was a bit steep. The chilaquiles were very good, but it was pretty spicy. I enjoyed the spice, but keep that in mind for those who don't. I don't think I'd pay $30 for chicken chilaquiles again, but I understand that's likely common in this area.

Yelp
Came on a Saturday afternoon, restaurant was not busy, less than 1/2 full but it took almost 5 minutes for someone to stop by and bring water. Ordered one beer on tap, and took another 10 min for it come out. Staff is friendly but service is very slow. I even heard the table next to me ask for their check a few times. Maybe it's because I needed to get in my beach state of mind. Ordered the "spicy" chicken sandwich with fries. It was ok but not something I'd crave. This place has so much potential but needs a shakeup. Great location, nice views, but nothing to write home about.

Gina L.

Yelp
It was fine but mostly average - meh. Great vibe inside. Went for the cool swing chairs but they are stationary which makes sense. Very close to pier and definitely better than pier food
google avatar

Yelp
The Surfing Fox was great' it's connected to the Pierside hotel. Food was wonderful and the drinks were good. It did take awhile for food to come out. Saint, our waiter, was the best part! He was really kind and attentive. We brought a 1 yr old and they were very accommodating for him! My only negative was that the bathrooms don't have changing tables but that's more on the hotel than Surfing Fox!

Yelp
Stumbled upon this lovely restaurant when visiting Santa Monica. It is opened up gorgeous beach weather and has a nice coastal vibe. Our server was so fun and friendly as you can see her posing for my quick video of the interior. We loved the cool decor and fun chairs they had at the table. But the food here was the best part! I had the Lobster roll , hubby had the Hot Chicken Sandwich and the girls had Chickens Tenders. They casual food had an elevated twist and we loved it! Such a cool spot in Santa Monica!

Yelp
I don't know where to begin with the experience on Sunday for brunch. I guess I'll point out how very cute this restaurant is, it's in a boutique hotel near the pier. However they state on the website they offer dog menus with a few items but they don't and they were confused when I inquired for our pup. Now to the setting, it was so dirty, there was remnants of food all over the ground on the rug where we were sitting, I had to get up and remove large pieces of dried I don't know what so my dog wouldn't eat it. We had reservations at 10a, we arrived and were seated promptly we were offered coffee and water, the other 2 members of our group arrived a few minutes after the coffee's and water but the server was no where to be found. I eventually got up and helped myself to a 2nd cup of coffee as I could see the pot from our patio seating. She seemed to be attending to the other table on the patio constantly passing us almost avoiding eye contact. Eventually (15 1 - 20 minutes after the other members arrived) she finally came over and asked to take our order. All 6 of us ordered, she took drinks and food at the same time, a few minutes later she comes back with silverware, a friend says can I at least have water while I wait for my coffee, she says you have water, my friend said I just got here those are their waters I would like a fresh cup of my own, she said you haven't been waiting that long your drinks are coming and walked away. Eventually and I say eventually b/c it was like 10 plus minutes before we received our beverages from the bar and the coffees. I will point out the only other table was the 3 people next to us there were no tables sat inside. Food that was ordered: 2 x Hanger steak and eggs 1 x Avocado Toast w/ poached egg 2 x Breakfast Sammies 1 x Breakfast Burrito Every single one of us enjoyed the entree but all of us received COLD - Fresh out the FRIDGE COLD, breakfast potatoes. 1 person asked for over hard eggs with their steak and got scrambled, wasn't worth asking her to take it back and fix she never checked back in, she only came back because one of us got up and helped ourselves to a coffee refill. Our server's name was Haydee. Not sure what the issue was but apparently she was having a bad day bc she was just really short with us & every ask seemed to put her out. Don't think we'll be back.

Yelp
I came down to The Surfing Fox for lunch and to escape the heat of the San Fernando Valley for a few hours. I was hopeful this would be a nice day out, since it looked so pretty online. One star for kind valet service fellow. Another star for nice server who took my order. Unfortunately, the food was underwhelming. The hummus was overly tart. The doggie treat I ordered for my pug was just a hard biscuit served on peanut butter -- for five dollars, I expected more. I was seated on the patio and was pretty much forgotten about. I had to go inside to find my server to pay my tab, and I never got a refill on my drink, or even checked on. I know it's a hotel restaurant, and sometimes service in these places can be slow, but I dislike being served and then forgotten. Also, though I knew it going in -- very expensive. Overall, the people were nice, but I would not return.

Yelp
My friend and I checked this place out last night. It's on an extremely busy block on Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica, so I was really surprised that it wasn't very busy on a Saturday night. Which isn't a bad thing, since we could hear each other talking. We ordered shared plates - french fries, shishito peppers, guacamole and mussels. The fries were really crispy, which I like. The shishito peppers were greasy looking. They tasted ok, but I probably wouldn't order them again. The mussels and guacamole were my favorites. I'm a huge fan of mussels, and order them whenever I see them on the menu. You really can't go wrong with a bowl of mussels. The only reason I gave this place a 4-star review was because of the slow service. Other than that, I would absolutely recommend stopping in here. This would be a great place after a beach day.

Yelp
Great service and beautiful decor right by the beach. The fish and chips were just okay; the tartar sauce wasn't traditional and tasted off to me. The sweet potatoes by itself is good, but not recommended to be paired with the fish as it just tastes weird together. The matcha crème brûlée did not taste good and tasted more jello than cream.

Yelp
Made a brunch/lunch reservation for a summer Sunday and it wasn't crowded at all. Nice open space with cool ocean breezes and a patio in front. Connected to a hotel. As for the food we ordered: - Hot Chicken Sandwich 8/10 Not Nashville style, but came with Oaxacan spices so a bit different -- I liked it. Comes with fries. - Breakfast Burrito -- 8/10. Nice size -- lots going on in it. - Fish Tacos - 7/10 - plenty of fish but two different sauces on top (will get on the side next time as they don't quite work together). - Sweet Potato Fries 10/10 (round cut -- amazing) All in all, a pleasant experience with attentive service. The couch seating is a bit too low for the tables -- so you need to sit on a pillow to be able to eat more comfortably.

Yelp
We were pleasantly surprised how good all the food were! Shrimp toasts were delicious with Asian flavors. Steak were also excellent as well as fish tacos! Kale salad were also great. Everything we had was soooo good!

Yelp
The half chicken was the juiciest and the sweet potato fries with aoli was to die for. Fido is as welcome as the hoomans.. I ordered the barkuteri for my pup and she licked it all up! The service was above and beyond. The restaurant itself was the total vibe for our party of 7 plus 1 pup!

Yelp
Great food, chill vibe! Sat at the bar and got a cocktail and salad, Brussels sprouts and Mac & Cheese. Good flavors and not too overpowering. Service was great and the location is a nice respite from the busy crowds. The drinks are super Instagram-able!

Yelp
Located on the ground floor of the new Pierside Hotel, the Fox offers an elevated dining experience...for a price. One block stroll from the world-famous Santa Monica Pier, so a bit of a tourist vibe. Easily found a seat at the bar, which featured the requisite roll-up doors to let the sun and sea air in on this beautiful day. The food menu is limited, but I expect it's all good. The bartender recommended the Hot Chicken Sandwich ($24!) and opting for the Spicy Furikake Fries. May well have been the best hot chicken sandwich I've ever had. The spicy Mexican carrots added a clever flair that really set it off. Service was great. Lobby bathrooms are really nice. Probably a hotel worth staying at, too? Only downside is that it's pricey, hence four stars instead of five. Sandwich and two beers was $45 plus tip, which may be a new personal record for lunch. Sorta glad I don't live in L.A.

Yelp
Damn,Talk about paradise. I love the best Fish Tacos at the Surfing Fox. I am not blowing smoke up their arses, but they have the best fish tacos i have ever eaten or had in my lifetime. Nobody i know right now can add up to the end of the bargain yet. We had nice viewing spot near the ocean, instead sitting in the hotel beachfront, which was still cool. Good Marguerita drinks here too. We had a awesome server, and what more could have gone right?

Yelp
I always get excited when new places open up in Santa Monica and The Surfing Fox does not disappoint! It has a cool vibe all around whether you're relaxing on the couches on the patio, enjoying a drink at the bar, or eating brunch on one of the high-top tables. We came here as a group with a couple of us ordering entrees (fish tacos and roasted half chicken for the win!) While the others shared a bunch of appetizers and we had plenty leftover with their healthy portion sizes. The whole restaurant was designed with an outdoor California mentality as there's no wall separating indoors/outdoors so even if you're "inside" at the tables or bar, you're feeling that Ocean breeze. This will be one of the "it" places in Santa Monica on the likes of Elephante, LouLous, and Mon Amie.
