A Medium Rare-Like Restaurant Will Replace H Street’s Swiss Staple | Eater DC

"In Springfield, Virginia, The Swiss Bakery is where Stable co-founder and master baker David Fritsche worked overnight shifts early in his career, and he credits that experience with perfecting his dough—knowledge he plans to apply to a Swiss-style sourdough with a 36-hour fermentation for the new Steak Frites operation." - Tierney Plumb

Fool me twice, shame on me. This was our second, and last, time trying the Swiss Bakery. The first time we had croissants, which were over cooked, dry, and the chocolate one had almost no chocolate in it. This time we tried cupcakes and a pecan roll. The chocolate cupcake was alright, even though it was half the size yet the same price as the vanilla one. The vanilla cupcake was dense and the frosting tasted like an oily fake butter that even the kids didn’t want to eat. When it came to the pecan roll, they somehow managed to master an undercooked doughy center and a dry outer layer. Truly a disappointment and enough of a pattern to make this a place we won’t be visiting again.

In light of encouraging reviews, we visited the establishment to find European-style desserts. We were pleased to see a wide assortment of Swiss products on the shelves and displays. We also appreciated the spacious interior and ample seating. However, we found the coffee to be somewhat diluted for our tastes, and the Swiss Mocha coffee appeared more like sweet chocolate milk than coffee with a hint of chocolate. The caffe latte was similarly watered down. While the coconut cheesecake and chocolate eclair were decent, we didn't discern the distinctive European dairy flavors we expected. Additionally, the cream in the chocolate eclair seemed partially frozen, resembling more of an ice cream texture, although the chocolate icing on top was quite enjoyable. Ultimately, if one is seeking Swiss products, this location is well-stocked and has ample parking in the front.

First time dining here and it was delicious. But I must admit that I come here for their desserts. The best eclair and pastries in the area by far!

Swiss Bakery is an absolute gem! The selection of Swiss chocolates is phenomenal—not the usual ones you find in the US, but rare treats that offer a delightful and unique experience. This alone makes it worth a visit. In addition to the chocolates, it's refreshing to see sustainable and health-focused products from Switzerland, such as their tea selection and muesli. The breads are fantastic, with their Zopf standing out for its authenticity and their Wurzelbrot impressing with its variety of seeds and perfect crust. However, the highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the pastries section. It was visually stunning and tasted just as amazing. Overall, a very worthwhile visit. Highly recommended!

All in all, I give this place a 3/5 because of the presentation. The Blueberry Lemon Danish was the only thing that tasted fresh and good. The price did not match the quality or taste. There are other options within 3 miles of this place that will give you better tasting desserts for the same price or cheaper. The employees were delightful given how busy it was.

I wanted to love this place. It’s so cute on the inside, a real island of Swiss culture with the photos of the Alps and racks of imported food and beverage. My drip coffee, however, was fit for a truck stop. They quickly obliged changing to an americano, and I didn’t have to pay the dollar difference. It was also stale. The Apple strudel I ordered tasted like something from Costco, or worse, with its cheap ingredients. It lacked that buttery texture. Low quality. Also, I asked for it warmed up. The worker seemed a bit annoyed. When I got it was not warm at all and wrapped in foil. My wife’s latte was also bad. It’s really 2.5 stars but I am rounding up because of the atmosphere and the fact that the worker changed my coffee. I suppose if I were Swiss or had lived there, I might dash in for some nostalgic packaged food purchase, but that is it.

While there are some really delcipus menu items, the service and logistics is lacking. As an operations research major, I can no longer recommend Swiss Bakery to people. The line or ordering queue is broken, been that way since they opened. And my kind suggestions weren't effective. So now I'm sharing with my community. There are better, more efficient places, where the staff is kinder because they aren't stressed out by the chaos system they are likely underpaid to manage.

Concern About Quality of Recently Purchased Cupcakes I’ve visited Swiss Bakery many times as I live nearby, but my recent visit was utterly disappointing. On January 11, 2025, I purchased four cupcakes (two vanilla and two chocolate, $3/each), only to find later at home that they were extremely dry, and the cream was unpleasant (yucky according to my kids who love cupcakes). They were almost inedible. They looked baked and displayed for weeks. This is not the quality of baked goods I’ve come to expect from Swiss Bakery. I suspect that the holiday-themed goods were baked in December and are still being sold in mid-January. If this assumption is correct, I strongly urge you to reconsider. While this practice may yield short-term profit, it could harm your reputation significantly. In the long term, you risk losing loyal patrons and customers.
