I have fond memories of taking my Dad here back in the 80s, so we decided to celebrate my sister's retirement in his honor. When I called to make the reservation for 8 people, I specifically asked that we NOT be seated near the kitchen. When we arrived last night, the host took me directly to the back of the room RIGHT NEXT TO THE KITCHEN DOOR! When I went back to advise the manager of my original request, he basically shrugged me off at first. I let him know I was not happy that my request had been ignored, so he did say we could wait for the other large party to finish and he could seat us there. Since my sister seemed okay with the table location, I went ahead and gave in to being seated there, but I did tell the manager I expect that somehow he would make it right.
With regard to our meal and service, our server, Nicole, was fantastic. She was attentive, professional, and friendly. She even went out of her way to take photos outside when we left. We ordered several appetizers, one of which was the crabcakes. While I don't eat crab, everyone said they had the wrong consistency and tasted more like fish than crab. The artichoke was good, but small for the price. Dinner entrees are mostly ala carte so you have to order sides served family style. The creamed corn is amazing! The baked potato was a nice size. My steak diane was delicious, but the people who ordered prime rib complained it was too salty. Honestly, the food was average, at best AND the prices are extreme. It was over $1,000 for eight people. That's crazy. And by the way, there was NO complimentary dessert, no waived corkage fee, nothing to make me feel better about our seating arrangement.
This will likely be the last time I visit Sycamore Inn. While I love that it has history, it was not worth the expensive price for what we got.
