The Shop in Portland, Maine, Is My Ultimate Summer Hang | Bon Appétit

"There are no elaborate seafood stews or grilled whole fish or ambitious desserts at this seafood joint from the crew at Island Creek Oysters in Massachusetts. It sells oysters, caviar, and tinned seafood spreads. That’s it. The oysters, usually local Maine and Massachusetts varieties, are just $1.50 each and come on large trays of ice with the classic fixings: lemon wedges, horseradish, cocktail sauce, and shallot mignonette. The caviar is also produced by Island Creek and best enjoyed on top of said oysters (not to mention very affordable). The tinned fish—smoked mussels, oil-packed tuna, beautiful sardines—is served with slices of sourdough bread, spicy mustard, butter, chives, flaky salt, sauerkraut, pickles, onions, and saltines, and is arranged in such a way that you almost don’t want to disrupt the harmony of the composition. Almost." - ByAlex Delany

Google
It was a great experience at The Tackle Shop. The updated location is so convenient and the shop has a fresh look! The staff are helpful and seem to be experts on fishing the surrounding areas & Casco Bay - they had solid tips and the selection is awesome.

I have been a customer over 10 years, and the service has been unwavering. I am always impressed with the knowledge and friendliness of the staff. They have done right by me many times, and I will continue to purchase my gear from this truly local landmark.

Closed on three occasions when google hours says open. Now they are moving. Single star until their hours online match actual hours. Asking for better communication.

George and Dana are awesome! Super helpful, friendly and provided amazing customer service. They recommended a rig/bait for us for striped bass and an hour later we were hooking monsters! Will 100% be back and see ya soon!

Google
Exceptional service and knowledge for both fly fishing and conventional "spin" gear. I visited thinking I needed new reels and loads of stuff. Instead the staff spent an hour showing me that my gear was fine, and I just needed some new line and other terminal tackle. Full service as they set me up. Deep knowledge. Fun staff. I don't need to hunt for another place.

Google
I found this place for the first time today. I needed a cheap pole and just enough tackle to get started. They specialize in more expensive poles, but I found a few cheap ones. There is not a large selection of lures and things, but just enough to get me fishing. A very small place, but the staff was very helpful. I bought a 30 something dollar pole and reel combination and he replaced the line that comes with it with brand new line. Very nice. I totally recommend this place. They have nice poles and stuff.

Google
Amazing service with great selection of anything and everything you need for fishing available at very reasonable prices. Dana was such a wealth of information. He showed the kids how to choose and use a rod, which lure to use where we were going and even prepared everything so all they have to do is just attached the lure. So grateful! Highly recommend!!

Yelp
Very friendly staff always got the right answers. They helped me a lot as to what was good for Local Fishing and I caught some fish that that's a good combination. Thank you for what you do.

Yelp
Small shop with a solid selection of fresh water and salt water gear. They have live bait, too. But the best part of my experience was the advice and expertise of the owner and staff, who set me up with what I needed for strippers including some thoughtful guidance on where to fish, Resulted in some good fishing in the following week. It reminded me why local places, and not buying on line, are worth it. Compliments to the team here, and much gratitude.

Yelp
Great selection, super knowledgeable staff. They hooked me up and then told me some good spots to fish!

Yelp
Great tackle shop!!! On vacation and stopped by to get bait and tackle. Finding accessible fishing locations with fish in Maine can be very difficult for outsiders like me; a lot of areas are private property with limited to no parking. The owner was kind and friendly, and he pinpointed the exact location for good fishing spots, even letting me know perfect times and obstructions to be aware of. The tackle shop was a great stop. Caught 4 nice sized schoolies in about an hour. Great experience.

Yelp
Best in the area. Owner Dana and his staff can be counted on for both their local knowledge: where the fish are running and what they're hitting, and great advice on tackle. Prices are low -- comparable to, say Cabella's, lower than Bean's, and combined with that local insight, the go-to place to get equipped.

Yelp
My husband needed some tackle while visiting Portland, the following is his review: As a fisherman from Arizona, we obviously don't do much ocean fishing. Pete was super helpful and took the time to talk with me about what I needed. It's the best tackle shop I've been to. Thanks!

Bryan M.

Yelp
TS has a wide variety of tackle from freshwater fly fishing to inshore striper fishing equipment. The staff is quiet but helpful about local fishing. I am new to the area and they helped me get set up for striper fishing in Casco Bay. They definitely have the best gigantic blood worms in the area.

Yelp
Unlike thousands of bait shops across North America, The Tackle Shop specializes in helping YOU catch your next fish, whether its your first or on a fly. I drove 410 miles from Philadelphia straight to this downtown Portland shop, where I learned where and how to catch the small striped bass that have invaded Maine's tidal rivera this summer (small Fin-S Salt Shaker paddletail rubber on 1/2 oz leadheads). The owner even pulled his phone out to show me spots and lures that worked earlier this summer. They have everything you need to catch fish in southern and MidCoast Maine, whether in fresh or saltwater, and will take the time to ensure that you are physically and intellectually prepared to do so. This is one of my top 5 fishing stores. Period.

Yelp
Very helpful staff...I'll let you know if the tackle works. They had a nice selection of fresh and salt water gear.

Yelp
My son and I were visiting from out of town and stopped for some advice on local freshwater fishing spots. The gentleman manning the store was very helpful, pointing out a no. of good spots along with very specific directions. In fact, he took out his Ipad and pulled up satellite view and showed us. He also recommended a couple of lures that would work well (and they did). We hit a couple of those spots and they were as advertised. The shop has a nice mix of freshwater and saltwater fare. BTW, we had stopped at Cabelas and also asked for advice; the folks there gave us some suggestions but the fellow at the Tackle Shop really knew the area much better. Highly recommend the place.
