"A 17th-century coaching inn in the North Yorkshire market town of Malton — a destination particularly well known for its culinary scene — is now a classic-meets-modern, boutique-inspired 26-room hotel. The Talbot doesn’t stray too far from its historical roots, but has updated its interiors with bold, bright colors and one-off vintage pieces, and updated its comforts with modern necessities like Nespresso machines and Roberts radios. Meanwhile the Talbot’s restaurant and bar keep the visuals subtle, the better to focus on what’s on the plate and in the glass — local beers and spirits feature prominently." - Tablet Hotels

Had a one night stay at the end of a longer trip. Check in was easy and the room ready by 3pm as advised. The room was immaculate and well presented (very trendy and comfortable). The staff were extremely friendly; whether in the bar or restaurant. Food and drinks offerings were wonderful. Transport links into York via train, or local areas via bus are brilliant. I will absolutely look to stay again.

We recently stayed at The Talbot for a long weekend — a bit of a nostalgic trip, as my wife and I used to live in Malton and have many fond memories of the area. The hotel itself is charming and well-appointed, and we were made to feel genuinely welcome. The staff were without exception warm, friendly, and helpful, which set a lovely tone for our stay.||Unfortunately, the dining experience didn’t live up to the rest of the visit. We had dinner in the restaurant on our first night, and sadly both my wife’s and my main courses were very poor. My steak was of low quality and badly cooked, and my wife’s dish was no better. We ended up leaving most of the food. To their credit, our waiter was extremely apologetic and offered a refund on the mains, explaining that they’d recently changed suppliers. While the gesture was appreciated, it doesn’t quite excuse the quality — particularly from a restaurant that markets itself as 'fine dining' in what is widely known as Yorkshire’s ‘food capital.’||Breakfasts were also underwhelming. On the first morning, I had the full English, but my fried egg was overcooked and rubbery, despite specifically asking for it to be runny. Hoping for a better experience the next day, I tried the eggs benedict — but again, a hard poached egg and what tasted like hollandaise from a jar left me disappointed.||It's a real shame, as the hotel itself and its team are lovely. But given Malton’s reputation for food, the overall dining experience at The Talbot was far below expectations — and frankly, it’s put a bit of a dampener on our view of the town as a whole.

On arrival we were met with a very nice member of staff and was shown to our room, unfortunately due to recent hip replacement we had a mobility problem, no fault of the hotel. We asked if we could change and it was done very efficiently, all on one level and with a walk in shower, brilliant. The hotel was spotless, the staff were professional, very pleasant, especially the bar man who was very friendly and interested in why we were staying. The evening meal was very nice fish was spot on but on a personal level not a fan of the fat chips. Breakfast was first class much better than a previous stay, a professional member of staff and food presented very well. There has been much improvement since we last stayed. We will look forward to returning.

My friend and I had lunch here last week. We were waiting for a friend who ended up not coming. We did wait quite some time for her and I explained this to the staff and they were absolutely fine about not needing the table back quickly. The staff, especially the two male managers were fantastic. Really friendly, helpful, funny with the right level of service. The menu is fabulous. We only had light bites but they were amazing. Then, we were able to sit outside in the sunshine having coffees. It’s just a little touches, everything is thought of, and things that you haven’t thought of is catered for as well. I love the fact it is dog friendly, although I don’t have a dog! And the atmosphere and interiors are beautiful, get relaxed at the same time. I can’t wait to go back.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We have just returned from The Talbot in Malton where we went to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary. And what a complete treat it was. From the moment we stepped in to be shown to our room by the brilliant receptionist we felt very at home. Our room was delightful with everything you may need for your stay, Dyson hairdryer a game changer. The food in the dining room was really good and the service was exemplary. A big shout out for Rhianna, the server for breakfast, who was the cheeriest morning person I have ever come across. Not only did she serve our breakfast she gave plenty of suggestions of where we might go for the day and was obviously really happy with her job. I really hope we can return think we have found our happy place thanks to everyone who made our trip so memorable. Chris

Very enjoyable stay at the Talbot for our third visit. The room was very spacious. but a little dated. Very comfortable bed. The room was quite noisy from traffic early in the morning. All of the staff were excellent. There was a good variety of food at breakfast, which was very good. The food at dinner was very good and nicely presented despite a slightly uninspiring menu.

Had a lovely Anniversary evening meal at the Talbot. The food was beautifully prepared. Everything was fresh and excellent quality. It wasn’t cheap but it was value for money as we literally ate everything put in front of us. The Talbot is quite rustic with a lovely bar (exceedingly comfortable sofa), beautiful grounds with plenty of seating to enjoy views over the countryside. Dog friendly and more importantly people friendly. Zac looked after us on the night and was excellent. Will definitely eat there again.

When I was seventy, my grown-up children gave me a £400 voucher for a luxury hotel stay. I chose The Talbot in Malton and had to pay a further £41 to secure a suite for our two night stay. ||I would describe the experience as being rather like the curate's egg - good in parts.|First the good:-|Two big spacious rooms.|A well appointed bathroom with a reliable hot water supply.|A lovely big bed with good quality linen.|Tasty breakfast options.|Now the negatives:-|On both of our televisions all BBC channels showed "No Signal" advice.|The left side bathroom light did not work.|Where the curtain tie should have been there were two red fixing plugs.|No toilet brush provided.|Various maintenance issues in the hotel grounds including dirty tables, a broken banister, unswept gravel, cigarette butts, a few dog faeces.||I hate leaving negative remarks on TripAdvisor - especially as this was meant to be a luxury hotel stay in the town where my father was born - using a voucher that my children had so kindly given to me.||In the end, my wife and I both came away with mixed feelings about the establishment.

Yelp
This is my favorite hotel in Malton! It just went through an extensive renovation which really modernized the place throughout. What I love about this hotel is that no two rooms are the same. Each one has its own distinctive charm & character. For this particular visit, I was lucky enough to get Room 9 down at the end of the property that overlooks one of the main traffic arteries into the heart of Malton. That said, this hotel is a series of interconnected buildings that are at least a few centuries old! No elevator (lift) here; you're gonna have to navigate some stairs. But it's all part of the beauty of this place. The restaurant here showcases the fact that Malton is The Foodie Capital of Yorkshire. All the ingredients are locally-sourced and super-fresh. Definitely try the English Breakfast! No wonder Charles Dickens would come to Malton to escape London! And it's highly possible he stayed here, as Chancery Lane is literally across the street and features the office used as the model for Ebeneezer Scrooge. Cool history! Also, back in the day, the Onassis family would rent out the entire hotel on their visits to acquire Thoroughbreds, so there's a very good chance Jackie stayed here, too!

Yelp
This a beautiful hotel with a delightful restaurant set in the North Yorkshire village of Malton. A luxury break - delightful rooms and special food.
