The 26 Best Restaurants In Mumbai - Mumbai - The Infatuation

"The servers at this intimate, laid-back South Indian bistro won’t let you order a main course until you’ve worked through the 4x4 tasting caddy, a spectrum of curries, rice dishes, and gravies. That’s fine by us—it’s a punchy start to a meal of traditional Deccan dishes. We're more than happy to revisit this bungalow-like space in Bandra and run through the entire menu, which is inspired by the owner’s grandma’s cooking. Gravitate toward the more tangy flavors, like the vatha kolumbu, lemon rice, and sambhar, or the roasted spice-based dishes like egg thokku masala and Chettinad curry if you need heat. The Tanjore Tiffin Room is in a dull, nondescript building, but inside, it’s full of botanical murals and tasseled lampshades and feels like the living room of a stylish relative. We always pretend that we’ve left the city, if only for a relaxed lunch date, or dinner with friends." - roshni bajaj sanghvi

The Tanjore Tiffin Room is one of the finest places in the city to enjoy authentic South Indian cuisine in a refined yet welcoming setting. From the moment you enter, the ambience sets the tone — warm, classy, and thoughtfully designed with a blend of traditional and contemporary elements. It strikes the perfect balance between being vibrant and cosy, making it ideal for both family meals and relaxed dining with friends. The food is truly the star here. Every dish is crafted with rich, traditional flavours that reflect the culinary heritage of South India. The tasting platter is a must-try, offering a wonderful selection of signature items that allow you to sample a variety of dishes in one go. Whether it’s the dosas, curries, or starters, everything is cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. The flavours are authentic without being overly spicy, appealing to a wide range of palates. The service is excellent, with staff who are attentive, polite, and well-informed about the menu. Their recommendations are spot-on, and they ensure you’re comfortable throughout your visit. Another convenience is the availability of valet parking, which makes dining here hassle-free, especially during busy hours. Overall, The Tanjore Tiffin Room delivers a delightful South Indian dining experience with great food, superb service, and charming ambience. Highly recommended.

🌟 A South Indian Revelation: Tanjore Completely Wows! Walking into Tanjore for lunch, I had no great expectations, but this restaurant managed to completely flip my mind. It's simply amazing South Indian food, delivered with impeccable style. The Culinary Highlights The star of the show, and the dish that truly caught us off guard with its taste, was the Karaikudi Prawns. They were simply delicious—a must-try that showcases a mastery of flavor. What truly impressed me was the service surrounding the main course. They offer testers for all their main courses, a fantastic touch that allows you to sample before committing. Furthermore, the waiter did an amazing job in explaining each gravy thoroughly, earning extra points for that level of detail and guidance. I paired my meal with their Sour Patch mocktail, and it was definitely not a regret. It was a refreshing and well-balanced drink that perfectly complemented the spice of the food. Service and Atmosphere The service at Tanjore is impeccable. The staff is always attentive and there to guide you through the menu, making the entire experience smooth and enjoyable. Overall: I give this place a definite thumbs up and am highly recommending one to visit. If you are looking for exceptional South Indian cuisine paired with top-notch service, Tanjore is the place to be.

If you’re looking for some soulful authentic food, then do visit Tanjore tiffin room. We tried a lot of items like the mini gunpowder idlis, rasam, appams with stew and the madras curry. They have a really fun concept where they provide you with a tester for all their curries and guide you as to what you can pair them with. So you get to taste all the curries before you can pick your fav. We loved the coconut stew and the madras curry. But do keep in mind that they have fixed seating spot. We booked the 7.30 one and had to vacate it by 9.30 as they don’t provide extensions on that. They inform you at the time of reservation itself.

Went here on a Sunday and was asked to wait for 30 minutes without a reservation, which is all good. Once i got my table , i had to wait another 30 minutes just for someone to come and take my order only to find out they will serve a tasting platter before you can place any main course orders. Waited another 20 minutes for the food , which was excellent. Ordered the Malabar railway chicken curry, a malabar parota, appam and iddiapam which was outstanding in terms of flavor and presentation. Asked for a vegetarian stew to be taken away along with a serving of iddiapam, only to find out 3 hrs later once I'm home that the iddiapam is missing. I also had to ask for a wet tissue as i had been given the bill and they didn't notice my dirty hands. Terrible service and staff who are always on the phone and don't pay attention to customers. The food is 10/5 stars (adipolli) but the management can be rated 0/10. They should pay attention to customers and given this experience i wouldn't return in the future.

We ordered a jackfruit cutlet which was the only decent thing there and portion wise alright. Another thing we ordered was Mini Gunpowder Idli which was horrible compared to the price we paid and which had everything except the gunpowder masala. The mini idlis were not at all soft. Then for the main course I ordered Rasam Rice (Rs 550) which was supposed to be served along with Vatha Kolumbu, Porial, Papad and Pickle. We were told the portion can serve two people. But it was utterly disappointing - in terms of taste, quantity and plating. Rasam was bland, it looked and tasted like thin tamarind juice just fell on an ocean of oil - no zing and simply bland. Anyone who is familiar with the cuisine of the Southern states of India would disapprove of the kind of Rasam they served. Vatha Kolumbu felt like store brought Tamarind chutney. And Porial lacked fresh coconut - they sparsely put some shredded coconut maybe to show authenticity. And it was a basic store brought pickle with one Papad which they said would serve two people. Even their hospitality is bad. We were made to wait after we got a call that there is a table for us. The lady who was the register book handling the reservation lacked hospitality instead was rude. Another lady who was walked us through the menu was extremely uninterested to do so and didn't bother answering our queries. Banking on the growing popularity of the Southern cuisine of India they're scamming people, especially the ones who have not tasted authentic food from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala. Anyone who has not tasted ghee podi masala, gunpowder masala would not know the difference so yeah that's how The Tanjore Tiffin Room operates. It was an extremely disappointing experience. Would not recommend it as an authentic South Indian eatery as it is anything but authentic.

I really enjoyed the food, its presentation and ambience here. The prawns appetizer with coconut and raw mango was yum. Their tasting menu was delightful and so was the gentleman who clearly explained all the curries. Their appams are soft, fluffy and went well with the railway chicken curry we had ordered. I’d suggest them to keep the wine on the table in an ice-bucket in between servings as we’d ordered a bottle but they had to take it to their refrigerator inside to keep it cool. From the mogra flowers on the table to little lamps in the walls, the place ensures good ambience and vibes. Thank you!

Great for a sunday lunch sit-down with your close ones. A very cozy ambience. Unfortunately, we had to have vegetarian options that day, and missed out on their lucrative meat options The front of the house was a excellent- we had some trouble getting a table, as my clumsy self had reserved a table for the day after mistakenly, but they tried their best to get us a table as quickly as possible in middle of that bustling afternoon

Visited Tanjore Tiffin recently, and unfortunately, the food didn't quite live up to the hype. While the cocktails were a highlight - Thalaiva and Chellama were particularly impressive - the mains and starters were just average. One unique aspect was the array of curry bases presented before ordering, allowing you to customize your dish. The mutton dishes were well-cooked, but other items like idiyappam and biryani were just okay. Overall, it's a one-time try place, but not necessarily worth revisiting. Maybe others will have a different experience, but for me, it was a bit of a letdown.
