The Best Restaurant Trends of 2025 | Bon Appétit

"Part of a growing wave of Dong Bei cooking in the US, this newly opened Flushing spot showcases the cuisine’s savory, tangy, aromatic, and warming profile—centered on meat, wheat, and pickled vegetables and bucking the trend of throat-scorching Szechuan or Esan heat. On a recent trip, our table enjoyed fried chive pockets; dry tofu sheets with hot pepper and pork; “eat with your hands” fried-and-braised pork trotters; and a deeply fragrant whole braised fish with star anise, tofu, cabbage, and vermicelli; it’s become one of my favorite Dong Bei places." - ByAndrea Strong

Just tried the new Lao Dongbei in Flushing and it instantly became my go-to for Northeastern Chinese food! Portions are huge, prices are very reasonable, and everything tastes authentic. Highly recommend the Sha Zhu Cai (Killing the Pig Hotpot) with tender blood sausage and sauerkraut broth, the super crispy Guo Bao Rou (sweet & sour pork), and the fall-off-the-bone Braised Pork Bones. Don’t miss the Braised Pork Hock, Di San Xian (potato, eggplant & pepper), and the addictive Salted Egg Yolk Corn. If you’re craving hearty Dongbei comfort food, this place won’t disappoint!

This new spot Lao Dongbei in Flushing is a gem! Portions are crazy big and prices are super fair. Feels just like hearty home-cooked food. The Sha Zhu Cai hotpot comes steaming with sauerkraut broth and blood sausage that’s softer than tofu – perfect with rice. The Guo Bao Rou is super crispy with that sweet & sour glaze, and the braised pork bones are huge – they even give you straws to sip the marrow 😂. Loved the braised pork hock and classic Di San Xian too. Oh, and don’t skip the salted egg yolk corn – addictive like Dongbei-style popcorn. Definitely a must-try for anyone craving real Northeastern Chinese food!

This restaurant specializes in Northeastern Chinese cuisine but also offers a wide variety of Sichuan and other regional dishes. Although it's a relatively new establishment, it’s poised to become one of the go-to spots for Northeastern Chinese food outside of Flushing. One of the highlights is the Guo Bao Rou (crispy sweet-and-sour pork), which features a crisp exterior reminiscent of tempura and tender, flavorful pork inside. The dish is enhanced by a well-balanced sauce, making it even more enjoyable than traditional versions without straying too far from its roots. Another standout is the chef’s special vine pepper fresh fish — incredibly fresh, with bold, balanced seasoning that left a strong impression. The service is also excellent, with friendly and attentive staff. Overall, this is a highly recommended spot for anyone looking to explore authentic and flavorful Chinese regional cuisine.

Feeding my northern Chinese cuisine addiction :) This place is really good, I would say comparable to the one on Northern. Their guo bao rou is def a bit different though but likewise really delicious. Not to mention the huge huge portion !

Google
Super authentic no frills spot for northern Chinese food and not to mention the HUGE portions. They gave us some recommendations and loved everything. Def recommend the fried pork - it’s fried three times but it’s so airy and good. Also got their northeast stew, cold noodles and honey glazed potatoes.

A brand-new spot just opened in Flushing – Lao Dongbei – and it brought all the hearty flavors of Northeast China right to the table this Mid-Autumn Festival🔥. The portions are HUGE, prices are super reasonable, and every dish feels like a full-on Dongbei feast 🥢. Here are some of the must-try signature dishes: 1️⃣ “Killing the Pig” Hotpot (Sha Zhu Cai) – A giant steaming pot that instantly sets the festive mood🎉. The blood sausage is softer than tofu, and the sauerkraut broth is so good you’ll want three bowls of rice with it🍚. 2️⃣ Guo Bao Rou (Sweet & Sour Pork) – Crispy pork slices coated in an amber-colored sweet and sour glaze. Every bite makes that satisfying crunch sound – a true Dongbei classic👂. 3️⃣ Braised Big Pork Bones – Massive portions with marrow ready for you to slurp. The joy of tearing into the meat, paired with garlic-soy dipping sauce, is pure comfort💥. 🥩 Braised Pork Hock (Jiang Zhou Zi) – Slow-braised until tender and flavorful, with gelatinous skin and melt-in-your-mouth meat. Served sliced, perfect with garlic dip, it feels like a wedding banquet dish🥂. 🥔 Di San Xian (Potato, Eggplant & Green Pepper Stir-fry) – Glossy, rich, and the ultimate rice killer🚨. 🍆 Stir-fried Pork with Eggplant – Lean pork chunks paired with tender eggplant. Surprisingly light and delicious, even great for those watching calories🎶. 🍲 Braised Pork with Vermicelli (Zhu Rou Dun Fen Tiao) – Vermicelli noodles soaked in porky broth until translucent and flavorful. A true Dongbei staple✨. 🥗 Dongbei Cold Noodles (La Pi) – Clear, chewy mung bean noodles tossed with sesame paste and chili oil. Irresistible and refreshing🤤. 🌽 Salted Egg Yolk Corn – Golden corn kernels coated in savory salted egg yolk, crunchy and addictive – like the Dongbei version of popcorn🍿. Big portions, homestyle flavors, and unbeatable prices – this is the place if you’re craving authentic Northeastern Chinese food in Flushing!

Ordered food for pickup using UberEats. Loved the 锅包肉 Guo Bao Rou (Sweet and Sour Pork) and Pan fried Chive Dumplings. Enjoyed the Pork Intestines also. Large portions and all were tasty. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Wow! This is the closest that I have ever gotten to the authentic taste of 鍋包肉 "fried pork in sweet sour sauce". I had it for the first time in Harbin, China, when I visited my wife's hometown back in 2013. The taste of it still lingered in my mind. In the US, we would traveled all over (Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Edison, NJ), just so I would hope to find a restaurant that could replicate that taste from my memory. Taste of North China in Flushing came so close, that I am relieve now that the search is over. We came back for another taste just yesterday within 2 weeks. This is comfort food for me, with fond memories of Harbin, among 中央大街 Central Street, 老昌鍋烙 Old Chun Pot, 友誼大街 Friendship Road. Anyone who desires a taste of 鍋巴肉 Fried Pork must try it, and to agree with me and my assessment.
