The Toasted Yolk Just Debuted Boozy Brunch in Uptown - Eater Houston

"The Toasted Yolk Café, a Houston-born breakfast chain, aims to dethrone rival Snooze with the opening of its eighth location near the Galleria in Uptown. The latest outpost just debuted at 2711 Fountain View Drive, Suite A with a bevy of breakfast items on deck. Menu highlights include breakfast and lunch dishes made with locally sourced ingredients like sandwiches, salads, and soup for lunch, plus omelets, scrambles, riffs on eggs benedict, and multiple varieties of french toast for breakfast that just might give Snooze’s pancake flights a run for their money. Boozy breakfast drinks are on offer including multiple varieties of mimosas, wine, beer, and coffee. The Toasted Yolk, founded in 2010, has landed on Eater’s map of essential breakfast spots. A press release announcing its Uptown arrival claims “the chain was founded just north of Houston [in Spring], years before anyone in Houston area had ever heard of Snooze.” The Toasted Yolk is aiming to outcompete other brunch destinations by saturating the market with 12 additional outposts slated for the coming year, starting with a location in The Woodlands." - Alaena Hostetter

The food was good and favorable. Seasoned well. We weren't disappointed. The food was great! Server can use a little more training.

Google
My server Onix/Onyx was AMAZING!! She is the standard of how people should be treated, she was not overbearing nor was unreachable. She understands what the service industry is all about, its the ideal that the customer's experience is what we are paying for. My experience was topnotch and the manager (I did not get her name) was present, vigilant and kind! Fruits were fresh, food at proper temperature, and everything was correct the first time. This place cares about allergies, quality and cleanliness!!

Google
We enjoyed our food and the dining experience. Our server was friendly and gave great service. The shrimp and grits were delicious and full of flavor! As a fan of chicken and waffles, I was initially unsure about the jalapeños mixed in the waffles but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise!

Google
We decided to try the toasted yolk and were very pleased. The service was great and dining area very clean and welcoming. The servers were attentive and able to give menu suggestions. Loved the fact that they have a small bar area and can serve drinks after 10am - bloody Mary’s and other morning cocktails. The Bloody Mary was very well done. The food was fantastic; very tasty not overdone with spices. They used the spices very well to accentuate the natural flavors of the food and dis not over salt. The Arnold plates were tasty and had a good combination of sauce without drowning the food—- great job. Loved the hash brown plate. The Brisket tacos and brisket plates were very good- definite recommendation for anyone who even remotely likes brisket. The seating areas were clean and open. It felt fresh and was a nice environment for an morning meal. Great coffee, but could use to carry some heavy cream for the coffee or coconut milk alternatives. Will definitely plan to return regularly.

Google
The go to brunch spot...and our server Shawn was amazing so knowledgeable about the menu and was able to offer suggestions. The atmosphere is very inviting and the staff was so helpful and welcoming. I had the two eggs and a cake. I added a egg and it was delicious. I added strawberries and bananas to the pancake. Everything was great, I will definitely return.

Google
A friend recommended this place as a go to brunch spot. So, I had such high expectations that were not met. Let me start by saying there was nothing wrong with the service or the quality of food. It may be that I’m just not a fan of their food. The food came out in a timely manner and was hot but it just wasn’t anything special. I got the brisket scramble with hash brown casserole. The brisket was supposedly marinated for 12 hours but it was not to die for. I was not crazy about anything that I ordered. I was pleased with the fact that my food came with fresh fruit. That was the highlight of my meal. I also felt that the menu has no variety. French toast by itself is $10 and then you would essentially be paying another $12 or more for eggs, hashbrowns, or any thing else that you want. There is no combo that included french toast or pancakes. I would consider visiting a different location and possibly trying lunch but that would probably be it.

Google
Excellent as usual. The avocado toast was thick. The salad was amazing…the fruit was perfect. The full bar is stacked with great options to make whatever drink you want. This particular location has a private dining room for meetings, get togethers etc. It’s a great spot.

Google
We liked the brisket tacos but everything else that we ordered was average at best. Please consider that most of the staff is not using a face mask anymore, in case that's a concern for you. Service was friendly.

Yelp
The food was great as well as the waitress! She was so sweet and attentive. Sangria is one of my favorite drinks this far.

Yelp
Not a fan at all. Eggs were not cooked well at all and the bacon really wasn't either. Service was ok however I was not happy being given plastic ware to eat with while all other table la have regular silverware. Mimosa was 5/10 because it appeared to be premixed or batch made.

Yelp
I came here early Thursday afternoon with my sister. We sat at the bar and were served by James. He was so personable and literally the best person to be behind the bar. Inside is spacious and there were a few other folks dining in. James was so fun and had great chat. He started us off with the seasonal frozen drink, which was a Bellini (sangria mixed with mimosa). It was delicious, not too sweet and had us feeling nice! For food, I had the shrimp and grits. I really enjoyed it. If you're a spicy food lover, this dish is for you! It was nice and spicy and very flavorful. It was accompanied by 2 large pita-like chips that were so yummy. My sister got "the toasted yolk" with bacon, which I tried. It was nice and buttery, and reminded me of an "eggs in a blanket" that my friend use to make me back in the day. We also got the Belgium waffle, which tasted standard, nothing special. We left with our bellies happy and full. I'll definitely be back whenever I'm in the area, especially if James is working!

Yelp
My sister and I were ravenously hungry after arriving from the airport and found this place from a quick google search as it was close to our hotel. We went in and sat at the bar. The bartender was extremely friendly and helpful. I really wish I could remember his name. I decided to be adventurous and order their signature toasted yolk with a side of bacon, hash brown casserole, and a Belgian waffle. My sister ordered their shrimp and grits. Besides the toasted yolk bread which I found to be underwhelming, the rest of the food was so tasty and flavorful. It was also my first time tasting shrimp and grits and it was surprisingly better than I had anticipated. I also had too many pineapple mimosas to count and it was very good. Ultimately, I enjoyed my experience here.

Yelp
Stop by to try a new place. Didn't realize this place was a chain. Nonetheless, it was a cute cozy spot with delicious food. Our waitress was nice and attentive and tended to us immediately. Coffee was served in cute ceramic mugs. The food was so yummy. The deluxe breakfast was a good mix of flavors and the pancakes were fluffy and sweet. My hubs and I shared the golden gate omelette which was filled with yummy veggies and feta. So good!

Yelp
Great food! Love eating breakfast here after my weekly massage across the plaza at Thai Massage and Day Spa!

Yelp
This experience was very interesting. I want to first say that the manager and our server were extremely kind and accommodating throughout the process. Also, they have 1/2 off mimosas on Friday, all day, which I think is a good deal. Especially because the mimosas are served in a large wine glass. Now, with the positives out the way, I can't say I'll ever return to this location or any other Toasted Yolk for that matter. We stopped by on a Sunday afternoon, party of 3, and opted to sit on the patio. I had my reservations but we decided to stay and give them a chance nonetheless. After looking at the menu, I settled on the Alaskan Benedict, along with hot green tea. When I asked about home fries, the server was very confused so I asked for the manager, who explained to me that they didn't have any. I thought that was odd considering it's a breakfast joint, but whatever. My food comes and the salmon tasted old, the fries were soggy and it was cold. My friend's food was cold too and the other one's meal had meat in it (she's pescatarian). Again, the manager quickly came by, profusely apologized, took the items off the bill and even offered us a round of mimosas (which we declined). So again, won't be returning, but how management handled the issues was commendable.

Yelp
Had brunch here with a classic BLT sandwich, can't go wrong with it! Fries were crispy too. I did get charged for a drink I didn't order though.. my mistake for not actually checking the receipt until after I left I guess

Yelp
Food was good, lacked seasoning, and more of a low sodium intake. Which was great for me. The hashbrowns were nothing but cheese. It's not my flavor, but others enjoyed it. Do not drink the water, very nasty taste; soapy dishwater..... I wasn't the only one. The waiter was good. When asking about the Pancakes + section of the meal, I was advised butter came it. I asked if it was all A la carte....lol The atmosphere is very brunch like. But gave coffee shop, bar inspo Would I return, nope, one and done.

Yelp
This location was clean and nice. Friendly staff. I had the southwest bowl and it was SPICY. The waitress said it had SOME spice but that was about a 4 out of 5 to me on spice level. Next time I know to tell them less spice. The shrimp and grits was good and creamy. I would order both again. My mom had the pancakes, eggs, & turkey sausage and there was no complaints. This was her first visit to any Toasted Yolk. Happy Birthday to my mom! She enjoyed her breakfast.

Yelp
It was Good Friday and the wifey wanted to go out to brunch with friends so we headed out to the Toasted Yolk. We had never been here previously but looking online at their menu it looked great! Me being in my 40's and trying to lose weight looked over almost every menu item trying to find some healthy options. It was a little frustrating to me that the menu does not have a calorie estimate under each item. So I finally decided on the "wheat which" which was a wheat sandwich with turkey sausage, egg whites, avocado and Swiss cheese. I got it with a side of fresh fruit. It was a really good sized sandwich, so big I had to cut it in half before eating it. And let me tell you I was pleasantly surprised with how delicious it was! Was not overly impressed with the "fresh" fruit (it didn't taste very fresh and I'd bet it was a few days old at best) I'm no expert, but In my humble non expertise opinion is guess my sandwich totaled at about 500 calories. Which is perfect for my weight losing goals! If I wasn't on a diet there was about 20 really delicious looking menu items I would have tried. Ok not all at once, but as quickly as I could in a months time, more or less.

Yelp
Food was DELICIOUS!! I loved the brisket scramble, I added mushrooms and it was so good. The server was kind, seemed a little understaffed since he was serving almost all of the tables. It took a bit to get our check. The overall vibes was interesting, cute on the inside and there was a cute little bar.

Yelp
Got delivery via grub hub. Accurate, fresh, quick 2 of us had Alaskan arnold, but hollandaise sauce wasn't typical. More just liquidy.. eggs and spinach very good. Grits spicy and dry 2 had French toast. Excellent
google avatar

Yelp
Overall a great brunch spot with good drink options including mimosas and breakfast cocktails! The food itself is very tasty and the inside is cute but i wouldn't describe it as an upscale brunch restaurant, however it gets the job done! Will definitely be back as the restaurant is large and has a capacity for bigger groups with less wait time in my opinion. The food is good, the only reason I would give 4/5 is due to price as I felt it was a bit higher in price for the vibe. The toasted yolk with the eggs in the sourdough toast is my favorite!
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
They have the best churro style donuts! They are so yummy! There original French toast is the best! Our waitress was amazing the service was excellent! The ambiance was the best I had a great vibe! It felt cozy!

Yelp
I just want to cry , I been running around all day to eat and was suggested to come here . It's absolutely nobody in the building . Nobody what so ever. I ordered brisket tacos , seems easy right . First order came out wrong he never even brought it out , second order came out wrong it was something completely different . At this point I'm shaking because I haven't ate all day and after I pushed the 2nd plate away and asked for the tab . The service tells me he took the tacos off the bill . That pissed me off because I wasn't paying for something that I didn't eat, secondly he made no suggestions on how to accommodate me . Not even 5% off the bill that I have to pay and haven't even ate . My friend order was right all he had was two eggs and bacon can't really mess that up .

Yelp
Love love love this place! I've tried a few things off the menu but the shrimp and grits is definitely my fav, the sauce is delicious! Also if you're a bread eater please get a side of the sourdough bread, it's to die for!!! They also have great drinks and offer drink specials on select days definitely check out the menu

Yelp
Ordered the Arnold & it was tasty & hit the spot after NYE. Bianca our server was very attentive & on top of everything.
google avatar

Candi R.

Yelp
I brought the food that was ordered wrong over Uber eats. Called there to tell them no bacon and they said they were making it. Got there and gave them the old order and waited 1.5 hours and do you know they NEVER gave me the food. They just kept saying it's coming right out. They literally have the money and the food. I watched people come in after me and leave before me with their food. I communicated with them at least seven times during this process and they just could not get shrimp and grits prepared. I have literally never seen such incompetence before in my entire life.

Yelp
Restaurant reminds me of Snooze. Waiter was friendly. I ordered avocado toast and it came with a side salad. Waiter was able to change my side salad without a up charge. Will be back for a quick brunch soon

Yelp
New menu item East Coast Arnold had fried green tomato with house-made crab cake topped with creole tarragon hollandaise on english muffin. It was delicious and super crispy. The crab cake itself was already tasty. New shrimp omelette was also a good choice had a cajun kick. The toasted yolk coffee is a must get! That and either one of their donut options. We opted for the blueberry today and it went great with the coffee because it is super sweet. Perfectly made cake donut crispy exterior and soft melt in your mouth interior especially dipped with the blueberry compote. Their new menus always have us coming back. Highly recommend for a yummy brunch and awesome drinks. Btw Sunday drinks start serving at 10am though!

Yelp
We had an amazing brunch here our last morning in Houston. We tried several dishes. The first being the "churro style" donuts which are great. From their Cajun brunch menu: Millionaire bacon chicken beignets, Mardi Gras Po-Boy, and the Bourbon St. Arnold with signature cheese grits. Stop reading now and run to get the millionaire bacon chicken beignets! I love these! The Bourbon St. Arnold is great also. My friend liked her crawfish tail po-boy. I didn't taste the Homemade Tuna Salad, but my other friend mentioned a couple of days ago that she is still thinking about this salad and we need to go back to Houston soon for it. We also had Cappuccino Coolers which were heavy on the vodka and delicious. We stay in the Galleria area when we are in town and will definitely return to this location for brunch.

Taina W.

Yelp
I sat at the bar and melissa was my server she was great at helping me narrow down their large menu. I had a $5 margarita and when i tell you it was so good i'm literally not kidding.

Yelp
Amazing food and atmosphere! Service is spectacular! Great place to eat breakfast after a long night out. Brisket scramble and bacon jam burger can't go wrong. Even have 1/2 price mimosas Fridays and 5 dollar morning Rita's on Tuesdays.

Yelp
Great food and our server, Bianca, was very attentive and sweet! Ordered the spicy bacon and latte, delicious!

Yelp
My sister and I came here after a yoga session for breakfast. There was about a 15 minute wait during late morning on a Saturday which is pretty good. Our waiter was really nice, and though our food came out pretty slow, it was really delicious. I've been to other Toasted Yolk locations in the past, so I knew the menu prior. Everything was great overall and I do recommend coming here.

Yelp
I liked this place. Very much in line with what you'd expect from any other fru fru yuppie breakfast or brunch place in Houston. The customer service was super dope. The 2 guys at the bar where sweet as pie. The food was surprisingly delicious. The porkchop were well seasoned and tender. The cheesy grits, though not as creamy as I'd like had great flavor. It almost seemed like they seasoned it. Very tasty with added milk and sugar. The cheese eggs were meeeh. No salt or pepper. The biscuit was good. Lots of parking and great outDoor seating available. Final grade: B+ I'd return.

Yelp
Rare bang for your buck restaurant. Meals are delicious and they they don't skimp out on portions. Service was great, a bit crowded like most breakfast places but big space. 8.5/10

Donna L.

Yelp
I ordered the burger medium rare it was well done. I asked for the hash brown side but got fries. In addition to messing up my order, the burger was one of the worst I've ever had in my life. It was obviously from frozen as were the fries. The hash brown casserole is gross. Just frozen has browns with cheese added. And beware it's full of black pepper. I'm not that picky but I could not even eat this food.

Yelp
Wow! What a great restaurant! As I was leaving my hotel I was looking for a place to go and still have breakfast even though it was after 11:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. I scrolled through the listings and found this restaurant and I decided it would be the place I would go. I arrived and found a parking lot full of cars and when I got into the restaurant I found a wait of about 15 to 20 minutes. While waiting I was talking to some people who were also waiting to ask if they had been there and they said they had and the food was amazing. Based on their recommendation and also our waitress, I ordered the two eggs and cake. I opted for two eggs over easy with well done bacon, hash brown casserole, and a pancake. It was a combination platter that included two eggs any style, choice of meat, choice of either hash brown casserole or grits, and either one slice of French toast or one pancake. And I have to tell you besides the pancake was huge it literally covered the entire plate and then some. The hash brown casserole was like none other than I'd ever had but then again I'm not from the south and my friend indicated that it was a common thing down this way. So that was most delicious. Overall it was a very filling platter for breakfast and I ended up with half a pancake left that I couldn't finish. I ordered orange juice and a glass of water. The orange juice was a humongous glass as was my water. Our waitress was outstanding and kept coming back to check on us. I highly recommend you check out this wonderful restaurant which only appears to be open for breakfast and lunch when you are in the area.

Yelp
One of our favorite breakfast/brunch places !!! We always bring our friends and family who are visiting from out of town. The food is amazing!!!!

Yelp
Mmmm this place was not everything we expected. We came as a party of 10 for a bachelorette brunch, so the overwhelming 5 star reviews set our expectations of the place to be great. I understand that parties can be overwhelming, but we are very patient people... but there has to be some kind of eagerness to serve larger parties well knowing a large tip is to come. We asked to be seated outside, but the tables could not be combined so we had to sit inside if we wanted to be one table. Completely understandable. No problem with this. But after we sat down, it took 12-15 minutes for the first server to come to the table. When we first ordered, we ordered drinks and food to avoid another 15 minutes of waiting. This is when it started to actually get iffy.. the bride asked for a spiked coffee and asked for it to be iced, the server said it was a cold coffee.... The coffee was served hot. I ordered the cowboy scrambles and asked if there was cheese because it didn't say it had it on the menu and I wanted to add it. The server said yes, there is shredded cheese... there was no cheese. I also ordered an iced caramel macchiato. It was good but when the check came, I was charged $1 for extra vanilla when it was not asked for. Not sure why, but wasn't worth the extra confusion asking to have it removed. Another girl ordered a water with no ice, it came correct but the waitress/hostess spilled half the cup when setting it down in the table. Also not a problem, accidents happen.. but took 5 minutes to bring 3 TINY coaster sized napkins...... that wouldn't have dried up the new water ring the cup made. The remainder of the waters, cocktail drinks and coffees came AFTER the food was already on the table. The food looked great and tasted pretty good. It wasn't anything extraordinary but definitely a 7.2/10. No real complaints here. The server nor 4 different people who delivered food to the table checked in the remainder of the time, until we needed something and looked around for someone nearby. We wanted to pay separately, but I don't know if they had the capability to do so or if they just avoided even asking what we wanted. This wasn't a big deal either with the cash exchanging apps, but would have been nice. I don't discredit them for this but something for the restaurant to consider having the capability to do in the future.

Chris B.

Yelp
I was very excited to go best it's always busy. Well the service was very challenged. Food was average sorry guys do better. On top of all the food was cold.

Yelp
I went to the Toasted Yolk on Fountain View for the first time today. Neat, clean, contemporary decor. Mimosas, hurricanes, and other beverages encouraged. As shrimp and grits are a favorite of mine, I stopped reviewing the menu when I saw it. Pricing was su h 17.99, that I questioned the waiter on the size or portion served. Dominic assured me that the portion would satisfy me. Shortly after taking my order, he returned to ask how did I want my eggs cooked. I hadn't realized eggs were included in the meal, so I said scrambled. The waiter asked if crumbled bacon on top was okay and I said yes. The meal arrived and immediately I saw excessive oil around the grits. Not sure if it was bacon grease or something else, but I tried to avoid eating it. The grits were creamy and eating with a spoon for me. I prefer a richer, thicker texture to the grits, but made it work with the scrambled eggs. The shrimp were tasty and the flavor of the dish became spicer as I continued to eat. However, 25% into the dish, I stopped because I really didn't like it. To my surprise, when reviewing the bill, I saw a $2.40 charge for the eggs.Dominic had asked how I wanted the eggs cooked, not did I want eggs? The second question would have prompted me to ask of the charge for eggs. I requested the charge be removed, but was told no. My remedy always is to deduct from the Tip, which I did. That's a wrap for me at this restaurant.

Robert D.

Yelp
Dom took such good care of us, he was quick, attentive, and fun. the food was great too

Chuckie F.

Yelp
This place looks nice but is horribly overpriced for the canned food they try and serve as good food , nothing good to say , the French toast was horrible no flavor no nothing felt like I was eating wet paper , then the apples they put in it came straight from the can , I can't even waste my time to talk about that sad excuse for what they consider chili cheese fries . Sogginess watery canned food just a few thing to say , the juice is from bottles and cans I can't with this place my video makes them look a lot better than they are when in fact they are horrible I would never suggest coming here they have way too many amazing places in Houston. That food went to where it belongs in the trash sad I wasted stomach space on this atrocity

Linda S.

Yelp
Not only is the food delicious and staff very friendly, this is a very honest establishment. I had a pick up order at this location on January 20. I didn't realize until January 23 that I didn't have my credit card. I really didn't think I lost the card at Toasted Yolk but it was the last purchase I made. I called today and my credit card was there. Very nice dealing with this restaurant.

Tawni C.

Yelp
Today my family visited Toasted Yolk for the first time. Melissa and Victoria took care of us and they were great! Victoria Seated us and gave us some recommendations and Melissa took over and offered even more help. My husband and son are picky eaters and they accommodated every request and answered every question. The drinks were great too! Overall food was very good. The excellent customer service topped it off though. They had a great sense of humor which is what really made it a good experience for us. Another woman helped as well but didn't catch her name. She was super sweet. The food is great but the reason to go out is for the fun! Thanks so much to the staff also, we recommend the breakfast burrito sub sausage for the brisket!

Jerry G.

Yelp
Awesome place to have breakfast the best bacon in town. The staff is nice and friendly I like sitting at the bar and having breakfast.

Yelp

Yelp
Had the French toast with a side of sausage patties today. The food was extremely good. The French toast was soft and the butter just melted over it. The customer service was at a 10 today. The host was friendly and highly attentive.

Yelp
My first breakfast experience in Houston. I loved everything!!!! I'm the type to order a bunch of random plates so I can try everything. The blueberry fours were hands down my favorite! I will absolutely be returning each time I travel to Houston. Asia the bartender was awesome! We will always come in and request her section.

Yelp
Very decent place especially for breakfast. It is very spacious and very clean. It was good atmosphere for my table and I. The food was okay. My eggs were scrambled amazingly but my pork chop was undercook yet pretty edible to eat. My mimosas were the best part of my breakfast. The servers were great and we tipped them well no matter if they were understaffed she made sure we had a great time.

Mason W.

Yelp
great food, great service doesn't get better than this. I got the southern fried Arnold and I've never tasted an eggs Benedict that's so good!
google avatar

Alan S.

Yelp
Met up with a friend of mine here for lunch today. I never been before but she was a regular. I decided to go for the patty melt and try the hash casserole instead of french fries. The burger was all right, the bread was particularly good. It wasn't as picturesque as some of the other things I've seen on their menu so maybe I should have gone with the club, which was my first inclination. They brought the donuts as a first-timer welcome treat. They were straight up delicious. Looking forward to going back and trying some other stuff.

Kathy C.

Yelp
Tried this place out for breakfast before my son's baseball game. Service was pretty bad hence the 3 stars. It took forever for our waitress to get to us, we had to get someone to help us find our waitress. People that sat after us already got their food while we were just ordering. We didn't get our orders right and it took forever for our waiter to come back and check on us. Sad part was the food was actually really good.

Yelp
Portions are huge! Coffee is strong. Environment is cozy French toast is delicious. Will def be going again next time I'm in Houston
