How Open Kitchens Have Changed the Restaurant Industry - Eater

"The popularity of the open kitchen quickly spread, spurring what some referred to as the Spagoization of the restaurant scene. Places like Batons and the Tomato Palace embraced the trend in the late ’80s and early ’90s." - Jaya Saxena

Solid pizza options and being next to the lake creates a nice atmosphere. The service wasn't great but they were training the day we went so that may have affected things.

Gave the Tomato Palace one more try this evening after 4 years of sustaining from eating there. Last and final decision should have never returned. The server Olivia was dry as toast. Very inattentive, never once asked how our meals were. We had to flag her down for bread after 10 minutes into the meal, also for our dessert and the check. The plates were hotter than the meals. The marinara sauce sour. Did we order EXTRA SOGGY pizza!!?? The only pleasant experience was the matradee, who was excellent and should be working in an upscale establishment. We received nothing from this Palace but Rotten Tomato's.

What happened here? Post-renovation menu is horrible. My family and I used to love this place. The garlic knots and Italian chopped salad were my faves and they are both gone off the menu. We went last night for my mom's birthday because she wanted to give it another try. BIG MISTAKE. I ordered the Lobster Penne at $18.95. The dish was 80% onions, 15% Pasta and 5% lobster. Actually, I'm pretty sure it was imitation lobster. It tasted horrible and there were 5 (yes, FIVE) nickel-size pieces in the dish! For $18.95? What a joke. Will never, ever eat there again, even if they bring back the garlic knots!

Excellent food! Prices can't be beat! Wait staff is friendly and attentive. Same ownership as Clyde's of Columbia; so if you ask nicely you may be able to get something from Clyde's. Pizza is my favorite, but everything on the menu I've had thus far is excellent. Great lunch specials. Highly recommended!

Wonderful experience. We had a large group and everyone was extremely pleased with their food. Our service was impeccable and I highly recommend the brownie sundae... Baked when you order it, not sitting around ahead of time. As a side note, I also noticed the manager thanking her employees toward the end of the night, which says a lot in my opinion.

It can be hit or miss, both in terms of food and service. Their pizza is really good. Kind of an Americanized Neapolitan. The cheese has a nice chewiness, if a little greasy. The sauce is not overpowering and the overall pizza is very balanced (I only ever get plain cheese). It doesn't keep well or reheat well, though so don't get too much. But it's quite good while it's hot. The GARLIC KNOTS - OHHH the garlic knots... forever delicious but sometimes stale. Ask for fresh ones if they are 'hard'. This place has to get alcoholic drinks from the bar next door, so be prepared to wait for drinks. My only real complaint.

I always do take out for lunch for me and my staff. Service is great and fast. Extremely reasonable prices, so I'm not sure what other reviewers are talking about maybe they need to just stick to McDonald's dollar menu. The most expensive item on their menu is crab cakes for around $26-$27 (double portion), but that is normal price for 2 lump crab cakes. I do however suggest that they make their portions a little bigger, like adding more noodles to the pasta dishes, but it still works for lunch. I always wish I had the time to sit outside by the water to enjoy lunch, maybe one day! Highly recommend here and Clydes for dinner also.

Great food and excellent service every time. Awesome view of the lake. Hard to find in landlocked Howard County. Great place to bring out of town guests both for view and food. Love the half price wine night. Also love the selection of Chiantis... either by glass or bottle too. We've had different dishes pizza pasta salad and fish and they've all been good. Appetizers are excellent and they aren't all fried like so many places. Btw Not sure what some reviewers are talking about. There simply are NO entrees that approach $20 so they are not reviewing TP. The made to order pizzas served at your table are only $10! The most expensive entree by far is the grilled salmon (not a pasta dish) for 15.95 and pasta entrees are much less. (Perhaps they are talking about Clydes next door owned by the same company but much more expensive and when is crowded service can be spotty at Clydes)
