It's been years since I set foot in this building back when it was the Hard Rock Cafe, so walking into The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium felt a little like stepping through a portal--familiar bones, completely new world. My best friend was visiting from London, and after a little CityWalk post-Halloween-sale shopping, she spotted the glowing steampunk facade and said, "We have to go in." And honestly, it's impossible to miss. The place is practically a landmark.
Inside, the whole restaurant feels like a movie set in the best way--cathedral-high ceilings, an open central space encircled by wraparound upper levels, and old-fashioned street lamps straight out of 19th-century London or early-1900s New York. It gave me hints of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the whimsical version, not the creepy one. Very Universal Studios, very LA, very fun.
For dinner, she went for the Macaroni & Cheese--three-cheese sauce, sharp cheddar--and it was exactly what she needed: cozy, creamy comfort food after a long travel day. I ordered the Meatloaf Provençale, and it honestly surprised me with how good it was. The brisket meatloaf was buttery and tender, the mashed potatoes velvety, veggies perfectly cooked, and the fried onions and gravy tied everything together. It was plated so beautifully I had a moment of, "Wait... is this touristy comfort food or an actual entrée?" (Answer: both.)
We ended with the Chocolate Mousse, served in adorable little pots, and it was one of the best versions I've had in a place like this--rich, airy, cocoa-forward, and genuinely delicious.
The whole experience was softened by the fact that we happened to come in near closing, so the restaurant wasn't loud or chaotic. Our server was wonderful--chill, kind, patient, and totally unfazed by our menu questions or the fact that I was choosing something to share later with my fiancé. He was one of those servers who makes the meal feel smooth and easy.
Overall, it was one of those unexpectedly lovely LA nights--touristy in the most charming way, nostalgic, theatrical, and delicious. If you're visiting Universal or doing a CityWalk evening, Toothsome is a fun, whimsical, family-friendly stop that delivers more than you'd expect.
