The Torridon

"Fifty miles west of Inverness on the banks of Loch Torridon stands the Torridon hotel, the one-time Victorian shooting lodge of local laird the Earl of Lovelace dating from 1887. It would be tough to find a prettier hotel in a prettier spot, like a mini-castle in acres of greenery. The interiors remain oh-so-Victorian with acres of original wood panelling and ornate ceilings, but with added cozy and contemporary comfy sofas in tweed-like fabrics, while the pine-panelled whisky bar has a different malt or blend for every day of the year. There’s no spa because who needs a spa when the great outdoors has so much to offer: walks through the woods and hikes up the munros, wildlife tours and mountain biking trails, and dips or kayaking in the loch. Food-wise, the Torridon doesn’t disappoint, head chef Paul Green cooks local: kedgeree fish cake, cured trout tartlets, Orkney scallops, as well as fresh halibut, and stunning Highland venison. As for the 18 rooms, it's a case of save the best till last. They are lush, with massive beds and even bigger headboards, each decked out differently with soft velvets, thick carpets, in-room baths or wide sofas, and most come with beguiling views across the loch. Then there’s the private self-catering Boathouse—simply wow. Did we mention the option to hire supercars to take for a spin?"

When my wife and I arrived at the hotel the greeting was warm and sincere, we actually had our room upgraded at no extra cost which was a nice touch. ||We were then shown around the hotel and told about its history which set the scene for what turned out to be a brilliant stay here. ||The whisky bar is a great experience and I spent a fair bit of time there, the barman Andrew was a great guy with incredible whisky knowledge whilst displaying exemplary customer service and professionalism.||We ate at Bo and Muc on both evenings and the food there is really good, it’s homely traditional classics and I would highly recommend the steak and the pollock curry! ||We decided to do some hiking whilst we were staying at the hotel and the staff provided us with maps, a rucksack, snacks and drinks and sent us on our merry way. Some of the hotel designated walks are excellent and would recommend. ||Generally if we asked for something from the front desk it was delivered to our room very shortly afterwards. The service is of a high standard across the board and in my opinion deserving of a 5 star hotel status. ||My only criticism would be the service at breakfast. The food is very good but there was no real organisation from staff and I had to ask multiple times for simple requests such as water, orange juice and coffee. It’s not that difficult to get right and I think bottles of water should just be on the table. This is a fairly minor thing in the grand scheme but feel the feedback is important.||To conclude a great hotel and would recommend!

We had an absolutely lovely 2 day stay at The Torridon. The hotel and its setting are stunning. The interiors of the hotel are really beautiful. There is plenty to do, very well marked trails, activities and I even swam in the loch. The grounds are very well kept and the kitchen garden is well worth a visit. It’s easy to see where your money goes.|We only ate at Bo and Muc and found the food very good and at breakfast. Both bars are great. The staff are delightful and helpful and there seem to be a huge number of them, we hardly ever saw the same staff at any meal. However we felt they maybe needed a bit of direction and training (no discernible manager was apparent) as service wasn’t always as slick as you might expect in a 5 star hotel.|As we visited with dogs we stayed in the Stables. We appreciated the dog friendly touches of treats and bowls! The room was comfortable ( especially the beds which were twin but they were actually 2 small doubles). The room and bathroom were maybe a bit basic for the standard of hotels but had good products. I would have loved a bath. As far as I could see there is no where on the website stating which rooms have showers or baths and I forgot to ask. |Despite these couple of things I would definitely recommend

The Torridon is an amazing place, we were lucky to stay a week in The Boathouse and cannot fault it as just fabulous. The views, walking trails Munro walks were easily accessible and are a must. Views of the Loch were just mesmerising!!||The restaurant looked after by Oliver and his new assistant Ankit was great and food by the chefs was outstanding!! ||Shane looked after us pre and post dinner with a recommended drinks selection and the bar atmosphere cannot be faulted.

Some aspects were disappointing given the apparent quality, cost and historic awards. The grounds are stunning, the room we had (No. 2) fantastic, the hotel ground walks were excellent and well marked. We had to walk to the Bo & Muc Brasserie which is a hundred yards or so down the lane. It was of no more than a below average pub quality - some of the food served was cold - why they cant open the hotel restaurant is a mystery - I have never stayed at a four star+ hotel where I have to take a walk down the road for dinner in a pub. Breakfast was a surprise - we asked for but could not get any white, brown or granary toast, all that was on offer was sourdough (a first for me).

A very, very nice resort with great amenities. We stayed for two nights in one of the stables rooms. Everything was top notch. The room and bath were very comfortable and quite nicely appointed. The staff of the hotel and the restaurants were super friendly and extremely good at their jobs. We had two great breakfasts in the main hotel, two very nice dinners in the stables restaurant, and a wonderful whisky session after dinner in the whisky bar. All in all an enchanting part of our trip to Scotland!

The hotel is in an unbeatable location looking across Loch Torridon at mountain giants such as Beinn Alligin. The public rooms in the main hotel are beautifully furnished - log fire in the lounge was a lovely touch and the selection in the whisky bar has to be seen to be believed. We stayed (with dog) in one of the separate stable rooms, which was very spacious and comfortable - and also good value. The staff were all excellent, with a particular shout out to our waiter in the Bo & Muc restaurant and the very knowledgeable bartender in the whisky bar. Great walks on (and beyond) the Estate, including wild deer. Only point for improvement is that, despite there being lots of staff, breakfast service felt a bit chaotic with a few mess-ups in our order on our final morning. Nevertheless we really enjoyed our time here and hope to return.

Google
What an absolutely wonderful hotel. The Torridon is a little slice of heaven in the Highlands! The hotel itself is a real retreat in stunning surroundings, the beds supremely comfortable, the food is the best I have ever eaten in Scotland and the activities are brilliant. However the thing that sets this hotel apart from others (for us at least) is the staff. You are welcomed with open arms and nothing is too much trouble. They make you feel special without ever being overbearing and have great recommendations whether that be in the bar, restaurants or about the activities. Many of the staff are seasoned pros but there are lots of younger staff getting expert training and experience in hospitality. The younger staff we spoke to were a delight and did the hotel, and themselves, proud. Thank you for making our honeymoon so special. We will definitely be back again soon!

We had a lovely stay for a couple of nights in the Stables Rooms as they are "dog friendly"||After a great time on the NC500 where our dog was welcomed nearly everywhere, here it felt like she was tolerated despite the dog welcome pack. Our room felt bare on arrival and we later discovered the bed runner and cushions had been left in the wardrobe - presumably because of our dog. You can't take dogs into the main hotel building at all - so we were really disappointed that we couldn't spend time in the lovely lounges or bar.||We ate both in the main restaurant and had the tasting menu which was delicious, and Bo & Muc the following night which was much more informal but also very good in it's own way.||Overall it was a good but not great stay, also we went when the Celtman race was on and there were some rather arrogant exercise obsessed guests staying too. ||We were really looking forward to being spoiled for a couple of nights, and despite the considerable cost they did not deliver this

Yelp
Lovely accommodations with lovely service. Team works hard to make guest feel welcomed and comfortable. Bed is the yummiest! Dining is okay. Had a bad experience at the pub.

Yelp
A superlative place for a quiet, romantic getaway. The staff are friendly, the selection of whiskies and gins is unbelievable (300 malts & 50 gins), and the hotel and grounds are gorgeous. We ate three nights in the hotel's dining room, and each was a splendid affair. Old-school service (amuse-bouche in the drawing room before "going through" to the dining room, and an ever-changing array of delightful dishes. We enjoyed local beef, venison, salmon, and some delectable desserts. Chef was very warm, and always came out at the end of dinner service to say hello and chat about the meal. There are dozens of activities to participate in courtesy of the hotel and surroundings. We took advantage of the landscape, and did two beautiful hikes along the lochs, and partway up one of the nearby mountains.

Yelp
Wtf amazing! We had originally booked the inn next-door, but once we saw the hotel we booked the last room in the hotel. Wow, absolutely the coolest place we've ever been. We were doing the north 500 and this was definitely the most worth it place to stop. The mealwas ridiculously five star and the service was the best it could've possibly been. We will definitely be making the trip halfway across the world to come back to this magnificent place. Will definitely recommend this to all of our American friends and family.

Yelp
Overcooked and cold food would not recommend. Beautiful location though.
