The Torridon

"Fifty miles west of Inverness on the banks of Loch Torridon stands the Torridon hotel, the one-time Victorian shooting lodge of local laird the Earl of Lovelace dating from 1887. It would be tough to find a prettier hotel in a prettier spot, like a mini-castle in acres of greenery. The interiors remain oh-so-Victorian with acres of original wood panelling and ornate ceilings, but with added cozy and contemporary comfy sofas in tweed-like fabrics, while the pine-panelled whisky bar has a different malt or blend for every day of the year. There’s no spa because who needs a spa when the great outdoors has so much to offer: walks through the woods and hikes up the munros, wildlife tours and mountain biking trails, and dips or kayaking in the loch. Food-wise, the Torridon doesn’t disappoint, head chef Paul Green cooks local: kedgeree fish cake, cured trout tartlets, Orkney scallops, as well as fresh halibut, and stunning Highland venison. As for the 18 rooms, it's a case of save the best till last. They are lush, with massive beds and even bigger headboards, each decked out differently with soft velvets, thick carpets, in-room baths or wide sofas, and most come with beguiling views across the loch. Then there’s the private self-catering Boathouse—simply wow. Did we mention the option to hire supercars to take for a spin?"

My Best Day in the Job

"A majestically turreted former shooting lodge built by the first Earl of Lovelace, this hotel provided the perfect end to the day; after dinner I sank into a chair in front of the fire with a drink and a menu and felt profoundly glad I’d applied to be a MICHELIN Inspector." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

The Torridon (Torridon, Achnasheen) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Set in the impossibly dramatic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, the Torridon stands alongside the loch of the same name. It’s not the easiest place to get to, but it’s worth the journey; it’s surrounded by almost 60 acres of parkland, and looks like something out of a Romantic-era fairy tale. The interior style is refreshingly contemporary, and richly varied, as are the rooms and suites, not just in the house but in the outlying stables and the private Boathouse as well. 1887, the restaurant, is Highland Scottish fare at its most elevated, while Bo & Muc offers more casual and perhaps heartier restoration after a day spent at the Highlands’ various outdoor pursuits." - Tablet Hotels

Our quiet winter visit at this hotel exceeded our expectations. The rooms were carefully set with all the 5 star amenities including a welcome gift. The service always had a personal touch and by the end of our stay we got to know many members of staff. The sitting areas offer a log fire place, giving warmth and creating a cosy atmosphere. The whiskey bar was impressive and a shout-out to Duncan at the bar who very attentively and meticulously created drinks based on our preferred flavour profiles alone. I have to wonder if this still holds during summer when they are really busy. However, based on our visit, it is an exceptional 5 star hotel in the Highlands. I have reviewed their fine dining restaurant separately which was also very good. There are a few points they could perfect but nothing worth noting here. With all that, please expect a high end price for the rooms and the food. However, I'm pleased that such a place exists and thrives in a remote location offering the best of hospitality. As a cosy luxury retreat, to get away from a busy city life and go for remote walks with views of the lochs, this hotel ticks all the boxes. I strongly recommend a visit and hope to return myself.

Booked The Torridon for my partners 60th birthday night away. Very impressive setting, even in the pouring rain. But the warm welcome made up for the very rainy trip from Inverness. |The room (1887) was an absolutely stunning suite. We were stunned into silence when we seen it. Little touches like chocolates, flowers from the gardens and whisky were all beautifully presented. |We had some beautiful cocktails at the stunning whisky bar before having dinner at Bo and Muc. Food was brilliant and a birthday glass of champagne was an added delight. |Back to sit in front of the fire with more cocktails and a game of chess. |The bed was sooooo comfortable, so much so that we have ordered the same 2 pillows for our own home! |Breakfast was lovely too. Eggs benedict is always my favourite and this one was fabulous.|Every member of staff we came into contact with were absolutely marvellous and a credit to the hotel. Shona the gardener even gave us tips how to grow dahlias which are my fav flower. The kitchen garden was impressive, even at the end of the season. |Will definately be back. Thank you very much for a 1st class stay.

We stayed in adjacent The Stables but had breakfast in the hotel.|A very warm, professional welcome in the hotel on arrival, such a gorgeous place and what a location.Have stayed before but we were given a brief tour of the facilities anyway. Our room in the Stables (first stay here) was even nicer than I expected, though toiletries were a bit nondescript re scent.Had hoped for some really nice smelling shower gels etc rather than bland Bamford offerings.Their ‘Geranium and Lavender’ range really didn’t have much aroma of either.|Breakfast was in the beautiful 1887 room and was, overall, very good.|My only complaint - absolutely tasteless, sloppy porridge. This was very disappointing for a 5 star hotel. They need to use at least Medium Oatmeal, soaked overnight, to get the lovely nutty taste of the real thing; rolled oats just taste of not a lot.|Thankfully I’d filled up first on some lovely cold breakfast items which were delicious as I find that no hotels or B&Bs seem to make decent porridge nowadays.|We had dinner in Bo and Muc (VERY pricey, quality very average, separate review.) The Applecross Inn is the place for good food.|However, overall, this was a wonderful stay and we will be back.Torridon itself is magical, even on rainy days.

One of the best weekends we have ever had as husband and wife! A truly remarkable and uniquely beautiful hotel. Everything was genuinely perfect from beginning to end. The walks and breathtaking views, the room, the food, the whisky bar….The outdoor bath in cottage!!!!|The chef Danny Young has some true genius in him and Michelin stars must be following soon.|Please do the 10km loop walk! Please drive from Sheldaig to Applecross (the favourite drive of my life)|We loved the balance between one of UKs best restaurants and the v chilled but glorious menu at their Bistro (Bo & Muc)|But maybe best of all are the people. Kindness, warmth, insight and knowledge, talent ….and a genuine passion for us to enjoy ourselves. |I know this is slightly effusive……but we have had one of the GREAT long weekends (stay for 3 nights!!!! 2 is NOT enough!) - thank you ALL. We will be back

The Torridon is a stunning hotel, beautifully decorated and in the most breathtaking loch-side location. Fabulous views from every angle, and there were some fantastic walks of different lengths on the doorstep. Great staff, and Andrew in the whisky room / bar was a joy to chat to. His whisky and spirits knowledge is amazing! A few things warrant the four star review. We stayed in room 12A, a gorgeous room overlooking the mountains and Loch, but there was absolutely no wifi. The staff reset it, and apparently the provider did as well, but there was no real difference. Very frustrating.|We ate in both the 1887 restaurant and Bo & Muc. The restaurant forgot to omit a simple garnish from one meal, and in Bo & Muc they forgot our sides. To be fair, the staff member that forgot each thing apologised personally, and a concession was made on the bill, but these errors shouldn't happen. |I would definitely recommend The Torridon, but just can't give it full marks.

The Torridon has been on our bucket list ever since we saw it featured on Amazing Hotels a few years ago. After delaying the trip for a long time because of the distance, we finally made the decision to drive up one weekend in December to celebrate my birthday. We have stayed in many five star properties in the United Kingdom and around the world, yet there are only a handful that I truly enjoy, and even fewer that I feel motivated to review. The Torridon absolutely earns that level of praise. In short, it is the perfect destination for travellers who value thoughtful details and exceptional care.||Our check in was conducted thoroughly, exactly as it should be, even though we arrived at around eight in the evening. Instead of simply handing us a keycard and sending us off with vague directions, we were given a guided tour of the property before being shown to our room. When we arrived, we found a few thoughtful treats waiting to mark the occasion, and these continued throughout our stay with small gifts provided during turndown service.||Every member of staff we encountered was warm and welcoming, especially Fadzi, Tara, Ultrich and Senna. One of the loveliest aspects of this hotel is that the staff are present and visible throughout the day. You regularly see familiar faces at reception, at breakfast or moving between the two restaurants, which creates a sense of comfort and connection.||The food was outstanding in every respect. Breakfast was exceptional during the first two mornings and still very good on the final day. Bo and Muc offered consistently excellent dishes that showcased local ingredients, although the Sticky Toffee Pudding was far better on our second visit. We suspect the first time we may have received the very last portion. The highlight, however, was 1887. Many tasting menus rely on gimmicks, filled with endless foams, emulsions and ceviches with little substance behind them. This menu was the complete opposite. It was rich, indulgent and a true celebration of Scotland, featuring fresh langoustine, beautifully prepared steak and much more.||Our room was wonderful. It felt cosy and inviting, with lovely Bamford toiletries and a very comfortable bed. From our room, number twelve, we could watch the highland cows grazing each morning from the window on the right, and enjoy a partial view of the loch from the window on the left. It was a delight to wake up to.||The shared spaces, including the Library, Lounge and Bar, were charming and perfect for a drink or lunch. The service during one lunch was a little slow, but the atmosphere more than made up for it.||If you can bring yourself to leave the comfort of the hotel, the surrounding area offers unforgettable walks, all easily accessible without needing a car. We did not use ours at all during the stay. I would also strongly recommend booking a Torridon Outdoors experience. These change with the seasons, and during winter we chose clay pigeon shooting. It was an excellent experience and our instructor, V, made it especially memorable.||No hotel is entirely perfect, but the Torridon comes very close. The small hiccups we noticed stood out only because the overall standard from the moment we arrived to the moment we departed was so exceptionally high. The trip was absolutely worth the effort and we will certainly return.

What a fabulous stay in this family run hotel.|Mimi and Flora greeted us and took us to our rooms. We were served by Tara, Andy, Andkit, Connor and Ullrich all who went above and beyond. Wonderful experience, delicious food with amazing surroundings.

The Torridon is truly a magical place; from the warm and inviting team members that greet you to the warm ambience of the common areas. You feel like you’re at home yet surrounded by understated luxury. The backdrop of the Highlands is truly indescribable. It is one of the most beautiful places on earth and the Torridon makes it all the more special. I cannot say enough positive things about my time there - excellent food, amazing team members, and if you’re a fan of whiskey and scotch, you will not be disappointed with their selection.

Yelp
A superlative place for a quiet, romantic getaway. The staff are friendly, the selection of whiskies and gins is unbelievable (300 malts & 50 gins), and the hotel and grounds are gorgeous. We ate three nights in the hotel's dining room, and each was a splendid affair. Old-school service (amuse-bouche in the drawing room before "going through" to the dining room, and an ever-changing array of delightful dishes. We enjoyed local beef, venison, salmon, and some delectable desserts. Chef was very warm, and always came out at the end of dinner service to say hello and chat about the meal. There are dozens of activities to participate in courtesy of the hotel and surroundings. We took advantage of the landscape, and did two beautiful hikes along the lochs, and partway up one of the nearby mountains.

Yelp
Wtf amazing! We had originally booked the inn next-door, but once we saw the hotel we booked the last room in the hotel. Wow, absolutely the coolest place we've ever been. We were doing the north 500 and this was definitely the most worth it place to stop. The mealwas ridiculously five star and the service was the best it could've possibly been. We will definitely be making the trip halfway across the world to come back to this magnificent place. Will definitely recommend this to all of our American friends and family.

Yelp
Overcooked and cold food would not recommend. Beautiful location though.
