13 Best Bars on Nantucket | Eater Boston

"Tree Bar is nestled in a small courtyard next to Town and Queequeg’s, and outdoor drinkers have the option of ordering food from either menu. The bar wraps around the shady tree that gives this spot its name. Though the bar’s definition of “martini” is suspect, the cocktail menu is full of refreshing concoctions appropriate for the outdoor setting, with fun names like “A Shrub Is a Guy Who Thinks He’s Fly” and “Ancho Sunshine When She’s Gone.”" - Katie Faust Stryjewski

The food was good and so we're the drinks. The service was bad. We waited quite a while for our server to return to get a second round. Watched one tabke leave because they could but get initially waited on. It wasn't a busy night could see a large grid of servers hanging out outside from our table. Had to pass them to go to the bathroom. Probably wouldn't go back especially since they wouldn't let us just order drinks had to order a bit of food as well.

Google
It's fantastic. The end. Small, often crowded, but it's a bar....AROUND A TREE. Pretty straight forward. Friendly staff, solid drinks and food from Town, if ya want. This is a go-to any time we're on the island.

Google
I had a great time here! Drinks are phenomenal, bartender was fantastic! I also ordered Mussels and the twin 4oz steaks and both are delicious. I will definitely return!!

Google
Sat down hostess was nice ... That was it .. only 2 of us . 4 party's from 2 to 6 came in after us . They received their food before us. Terrible. Never come here . Took 15 minutes to get a menu. We waited a hour for our food. Sad. We NEVER COMPLAIN Only thing good was the music

Google
Obnoxious bouncer. Watched him deny entry to a guy in front of me in line because he was young looking. This guy had a valid ID and was clearly over 21. I’m almost forty. I just can’t stand power-addicted jerks who push people around because they can. We took our business elsewhere.

Google
Fantastic vide and delicious food at this Nantucet hideaway..nestled in the heart of town. We ate outside on this God-kissed day. Share the Nantucket roll (shrimp tempura, cream cheese and avocado inside with salmon and sweet &spicy sauce on top) then had a poke bowl and fish and chips with truffle fries. Single con was poke bowl was missing rice which would have offset the heat from the fresh jalapeño. Otherwise everything was excellent (even the poke bowl). Definitely get the truffle fries!

Yelp
Our hopes were high for this place as many people we passed said they loved it. Unfortunately my tacos didn't have a ton of flavor, the fry seemed overdone, and more unique toppings or some sort of house-made sauce would've been nice. It seemed like there was little effort/creativity for this dish. The fries were barely seasoned and also seemed a bit overcooked. The fish on the sandwich was very fresh but besides that, lacking flavor. The fish to bread ratio seemed off, with there being excess bread. The service was great, as my water was constantly refilled, and the food came quickly. I would not return here, as we could easily find better food elsewhere.

Yelp
Just want to take the time to apologize to the server/hostess/manager or whomevers job it is to ignore customers and then treat them like wayward stray dogs biting at her ankle. I am very sorry my wife and I set in the shade waiting for you for fifteen minutes at the four top in your mostly empty out door area a half hour before lunch service ended in the off season without first searching for you at your table/workspace in the entirely empty indoor area (texting on your phone) to ask permission. And I am equally sorry we where not willing to move the sun drenched two top after you scolded us. And while I was curious if the couple that moved there after we walked out of the first restaurant we have ever walked out of in our lives, possibly received the same special treatment, I am delighted to report that we truly enjoyed spending $100 plus a 25% tip on lunch down the street where we where treated like kings. So we do thank you for that. And while I can't reflect on the food I have to believe that any restaurant that would have someone who clearly hates her job so much would very likely not really care about, well anything. So I doubt I missed much.

Yelp
Halibut was good. Tomatoes were disgusting in the burrata - some mushy, some not ripe and one tasted rancid. Server was not engaging at all. I am not a complainer so I didn't mention it but server didn't even ask why I did not eat the tomatoes. It's cozy inside and patio looks nice but we chose it because close to the hotel and raining but would not go back.

Yelp
Food and service are very good. Parking at times can be difficult!! The bartenders make some delicious cocktails.

Yelp
Cozy space; great food - mussels were fabulous. Relaxing time at the inside bar and great chat with the bartender.

Yelp
Great place. Good food and wonderful servers. Went 2 times over vacation and both times awesome.

Gary B.

Yelp
You get the Olde Nantucket feel when you see Ishmael chatting it up with Melville at the next table, Mussels outstanding; Caprese salad; nice pour of wine....love this little place!

Yelp
A tiny fun - cobble stone side street to street side bar with comfy seating and good drinks ! You have to walk by to notice it between the shingles- but so worth it. We had sushi- and it was delicious!! No comparison- best on island by far... fun afternoon vibe before dinner and left wanting more food - I could eat there every day! Wish we stayed for dinner...

Katherine W.

Yelp
Flavorful large portions from an eclectic menu. Authentic ambiance without pretension. Good service and reasonably priced wine list.

Leo H.

Yelp
Amazing food, some of the best on Nantucket. For sure worth a stop by for some amazing grub! Amazing service, got an amazing server, he made sure everything was perfect! Really cute small resteraunt as well.

Yelp
The service was great! Our server was super friendly, funny, and knowledgeable. The food was delicious. Clam chowder was hot and creamy. The steak frites was cooked perfectly and how I requested it. Was give a large side of truffle fries- my fav! We split the crème brûlée but I wish I had it all to myself!! Would definitely go back here!
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
Outstanding! The chowder is among the best of the best. We had the fish and chips and it was exactly how it should be served. Not over breaded. Light. Fluffy and full sized portions of cod. Great service. Fantastic cocktails. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We had a reservation but still had to wait 20 minutes for our table to be ready. Regardless of that issue with the hostess, the rest of the staff was friendly and the food was delicious! Everything came out fast too.

Yelp
Nice intimate ambiance. Excellent service. Great food. Ridiculous spirits prices. That sums it up. A shot of Makers Mark here will cost you $21! An Old Fashion with bullet rye $20. When I double checked with the waiter about the Maker's price after seeing the bill, he nodded and the bartender who overheard laughingly said "Welcome to Nantucket!". Well certainly prices are higher on the island but this was a rip off I felt. I ordered the same thing at Straight wharf and it was $14, and it's a higher end restaurant. Shoot a whole bottle of Makers at Murray's is $59. Live and learn. Started with the clam chowder and it was delicious. For entrees we had the curry chicken and the shrimp and avocado Bibimbap. Both were excellent and recommended. Unnecessarily squeezing us for that Makers probably makes me look elsewhere in the future.

Yelp
My parents told me that if you can't say something good about a person, place or thing.....do not say anything at all. Enough said!!

Yelp
I've left 5 stars else where. This is the first 4 star. I've had more bar experiences I enjoy elsewhere but let's say it's me. I felt this place held itself more pretentious than any place should. Pretentious is never good. I had a Manhattan.. excellent. I also had the tuna tartar. The tuba was . The tortilla chips it's served with seemed like a lazy choice. Tortilla chips should never be served unless it's salsa or nachos. There are too many options to pair with tuna to choose a tortilla chip. The hostess and waitress were amazing!!!!
google avatar

Linleigh S.

Yelp
Walk-in at 5 on Friday. Sat immediately. Ordered the truffle fries and Brussels salad for start. Very good. Created anticipation for our entrees only to be disappointed. Chicken bowl - Thai style came with 0 cilantro. Which is the only point. Asked the waitress for some more. "It's in the sauce" - which by the way also had 0 cilantro. But a ton of sugar. Portuguese Stew - 0 Linguica. 0 Kale. 0 clams. 0 calamari. Maybe it was just "It's in the sauce" and for $39. The Short Ribs were bomb so get that or Nah.

Yelp
We came here for dinner a few nights ago and had the Dynamite Shrimp to start and the Halibut and Ramen as our mains. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The Dynamite shrimp are cooked in a very light batter (almost like beer batter or what you might get with an upper tier sweet and sour chicken/pork) accompanied by a delicious spicy/tangy sauce. Highly recommend this dish. Only complaint being the shrimp are a bit small in size. The Halibut was a little overcooked and dry but the risotto it was served on was delicious, and the sauce (a type of bernaise) was great too. I thought the ramen was a little flavorless compared to what I'm used to eating at places that specialize in Ramen (I should have probably ordered something else). All in all we had a good experience and would come back again.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant on Nantucket. Spare ribs are unreal. Great atmosphere and service.
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
Couldn't recommend a place more! The restaurant quality makes the island price worthwhile. We were hoping to sit outside, but was escorted inside for our reservation. The server was much more pleasant than the hostess, and the bartender added some additional syrup to my friend's drink which was just a bit too spicy for her liking. The sushi was fresh and delicious. If you like truffle fries, you can't go wrong with these shoestring ones. The steak frites was phenomenal. It had the perfect medium sear and the best herbed butter on top.
google avatar

Ben G.

Yelp
Our dinner came out in about 10 minutes of being seated. This was nice except that my short ribs were nuclear hot on the inside (microwaved) and the gravy had lumpy chunks that had not been emulsified - tasted a bit like bullion cubes. Wife had gooey pasta. Trendy but overrated and not a serious attempt at greatness.
google avatar

George B.

Yelp
We have gone there the past two summers. The food is excellent in preparation and delicious. We have tried appetizers, entrees, and dessert. All equally outstanding. The outdoor dining is wonderful.

Cassidy P.

Yelp
Exceptional food and atmosphere! My husband and I visited Nantucket from the cape, and I was a bit wary--worried it might be a little touristy! But the atmosphere and food definitely proved otherwise. Great selection of wines paired with incredible seafood. Queequeg's is a great spot for a date night!
google avatar

Lee D.

Yelp
Malcolm, our server, was personable, fun, and fast. He gave us the best table in the house, on a corner outside. Nantucket is normally a place where one orders seafood, but I had the NY strip steak, which was arguably the best I've ever had.
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
Awful service, stood at the hostess stand for 20 mins, 5 employees walked by me, not one said hello or acknowledged my presence. I get it we are in tough times, but even so, that was really rude. At least tell me they were busy or to wait, hell at least say hi to me and acknowledge I exist Very disappointed

Marty L.

Yelp
I come here every year and Queequeg's never disappoints. We had short ribs and chicken curry. Both were excellent! Also a nice variety of drinks and beers.
google avatar

Gabrielle M.

Yelp
Queequeg's was all about the burger and I was so disappointed to hear that they changed it. Instead of two thin patties on a Portuguese bun, now it's one thick patty on a simple brioche bun with lettuce and tomatoes. Nothing to write home about. They always take care of us service-wise here and rushed to move us inside at lunch when it started pouring rain today. The food just isn't as good this summer. My lobster roll was slightly undercooked, but the truffle fries were amazing. My sister's Eggs Benedict was good as always, but we were underwhelmed with the swordfish sandwich and the Dragon Roll was also average. The sushi also came out after all of the rest of us had finished our meal. It's a cozy solid spot downtown and I really enjoyed my past meals here. I hope they add the fried pickles back to their menu and shape things up for the rest of the season.

Scott L.

Yelp
I thought the location was prefect. The patio was very inviting. Food was delicious. A fun spot.

T S.

Yelp
A perennial favorite, and one we visit every time we're on-Island. Becky is the best bartender/server around, and the food is always great. Tucked away downtown on quiet Oak Street behind the Atheneum [library], Queequegs has outdoor tables as well as an outdoor bar.

Yelp
I like Queequeg's. (Name in the running for my future son's name, for reals (not for reals). It's a good spot when you're looking for a nice night out, but more casual than some of the other downtown Nantucket restaurants. A seafood forward menu with entrees at at about $30 for a solid portion size (read: not huge, but not Nantucket tiny). My party of 4 had no problem getting a last minute rez on a weeknight in July. We all opted for dinner apps and entrees and did a little bit of some sharing, and I gotta say we all enjoyed our meals. The oyster salad is delicious, with fresh greens topped with fried oysters and a delicious deviled eggy dressing. Other options include a fresh summer squash salad and tune and meat tartars. I followed it up with sea scallops. 3 large scallops could have used a little bit more oomph, but they were solid and meaty. However, that pan roasted halibut... SWOON. A nice sized fish perfectly cooked. Lobster gnocchi and the bolognese were solid dishes, but not standout. Overall, cocktails are pricey, food for Nantucket is pretty reasonable and delicious. Service was fine, not fine dining, but casual! I'd 100% come again and recommend for a more casual night out vs that high end Nantucket night.

Yelp
I have been coming to Nantucket for all 30 years of my life and, although I don't know why, I had never been to Queequeg's until this past December. Even though official Stroll was cancelled this year, myself and group of 5 other friends decided to come up for the weekend anyway and enjoy the island at its most peaceful. On a Thursday night we had a reservation for Queequeg's inside. We all felt safe eating inside as the restaurant was very well spaced out when we were there. We sat in a large cozy booth which was perfect for 6 people. Drinks were strong and delicious. I will admit the menu seems to be a little all over the place in terms of cuisine but everyone was able to find something they enjoyed. My husband and I split the hamachi dragon sushi roll and it was probably one of the best rolls I've ever had- the hamachi tasted SO fresh. I had the Bibimbap for dinner which was a huge serving- it is pricey (if you add chicken and avocado like I did) but plentiful! We will definitely be back next time we're here!!

LM P.

Yelp
Oh my goodness-AMAZING!!!!! Manager is sooo kind and outgoing-made this a real treat. Sushi and ribs were amazing-we can't wait to come back-thank you Queegueg's!!!
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
A cozy restaurant with good ambience, nice outdoor patio seating and a small bar in the back. Unfortunately the food was a disappointment. Typical Nantucket tiny portion size that was expected but the food was bland and cold. I ordered the clam chowder, fried oyster salad and the steak dish. My salad was was warm and the oyster was cold and tasteless. The steak was so cold that the herb butter that came with it couldn't blend into my dish. The clam chowder was ok but again the soup was warm not hot as expected. If it wasn't for the decor and the overall ambiance of this cute restaurant I would give it 1 star.

Deb T.

Yelp
A group of us went here for dinner during NWF 2022 when the restaurant was especially busy. The service and food were both top notch. Our server, Casey, was personable and attentive. All of the food from the mussels (a must have) through dessert was delicious.
google avatar

CC C.

Yelp
The food here is exceptional. I'm a big fan of their 2 courses for $25, which you can get from 5:30pm-6:30pm Monday through Thursday. I've had some delicious food here. Ahi Tuna Tartar with wonton crisps, braised short ribs, Burrata cheese plate, Berkshire pork porter house... Ah-mazing. They cook and prepare each meal perfectly. The meat is always tender and the tastes blend perfectly. I'm in food heaven when I'm here. Seating options are both inside and outside. I've found that the service is so much faster if you eat outside. The interior is very small, and when it fills up the server gets busy and service slows to a crawl. It's an expensive place so taking advantage of the 2 courses is an excellent deal. Allot plenty of time if it's busy there, but it's definitely a place worth going to if you're in town.

Yelp
Went here for my sisters bachelorette party. After sitting down, the waiter (Malcom) insisted we order multiple truffle fries stating "girls love truffle fries" and continued to add things to our order without consent to increase our bill. After waiting over an hour for our food, we asked where it was and Malcolm responded "you didn't remind me" In turn we reminded him that is his job as a waiter. He came over to us and told us the kitchen messed up our order and offered us shots. We took the shots thinking they were on the house because the food never came and he offered them to us. When we got our bill he charged us $156 for the shots. I went to the manager to describe the situation and stated they were offered to us, we did not order them. She then accused me of lying and took me outside of the restaurant like a child and said "your story does not match up with was Malcolm is saying." It took about another hour for them to figure out how to remove the shots from the bill. All while this is happening, Malcolm is talking very negatively about our group in the corner of the restaurant. After leaving, we also heard the manager and other wait staff talking badly about us as well. Malcolm and the entire wait staff need a training on customer service and respect and should probably remove themselves from the restaurant business to avoid this happening again.

Yelp
Boy oh boy has this become a disappointment..ugh...stopped In for lunch but could only get drinks. Martini was okay, Just okay..bartender was rude and actually threw away a package left behind. We stopped literally three Minutes after only to find out the package was Thrown out.
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
Wow. Haven't been here in several years. I was impressed. Had the halibut and had my wife's left over shrimp scampi. One of the best meals of the summer. Our waiter J T did a great job. Would recommend to all. I live on island 3.5 months out of the year.
google avatar

Tamra T.

Yelp
Such a lovely dinner! Really beautiful white lights and outside set up. The food was delicious and I really liked the vibe. I want to return when I can sit inside also as it was really cool inside. Highly recommend!

Kathy C.

Yelp
Big disappointment. Stopped by for lunch. Wanted chowder and a yummy salad. The chowder had decent flavor but it was barely warm. The beet salad was small with pale sickly looking beets with a mush of some orange goop underneath. The arugula sat on top, the only decent item on the salad. That disaster cost $28!!

Pierce D.

Yelp
nice place with friendly staff and prompt service. the grilled chicken was cooked to perfection, and the spicy tuna roll was fresh and had quite the kick! we sat outdoors and seating area was very nice
google avatar

K P.

Yelp
Come by on a quiet night off season and loved our entire dining experience. Best shrimp scampi ever.. been dreaming about it since our visit and look forward to our return.

Julia S.

Yelp
The shrimp scampi is covered on oil, I had to pour out half of my plate and the pasta was still coated. Sun dried tomatoes instead of fresh and an overall disappoint to say the least.
google avatar

Alexandra M.

Yelp
Great food, Horrible service (but they comp'ed the drinks). I got the arugula salad and shrimp scampi (without the shrimp because they did not have any vegetarian options for entrees so I had to make sure). Both were fantastic and I ate everything on the plate. That might have been because we waited 45-60 minutes between the appatizer and the entree. Thinking about it, that was not too shocking, since it took our server a really long time to take our drink order and take our food order.

Leo T.

Yelp
The service was slow, but oh my, the food was good. The sushi was incredible. The mussels were perfect. The only thing preventing me from giving a 5 star review is the speed of the service. The wait is worth it.
google avatar

Lydia T.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants on the island! My family never fails to eat here at least once a year on our vacations. Our waiter, Malcolm was beyond friendly and helpful this year. He gave honest suggestions for food and drinks and did not fail to entertain or disappoint us!
google avatar

Donna K.

Yelp
Had mussels appetizer and they were off - really funky. Was my sister's birthday so I didn't complain but a whole dish sent back to kitchen and staff didn't ask why. Mains ok -fluke special and not local scallop? I pre ordered a 'surprise' slice of cake for sister's birthday and it was forgotten- I had lunch here once and lobster roll and service on point - I wouldn't go back though.

Yelp
This is a tasty option when traveling with children. They have a good menu and a very good children's menu. The restaurant is a bit dark, which is unusual for a Nantucket restaurant. We had: Heirloom tomato salad - It came with a small piece of burrata. Very good, but not enough burrata. Skillet roasted mussels - This dish was very tasty but not what it was described as on the menu. I expected shelled mussels in a sauce. This was typical Belgium styled mussels. Tuna Napoleon - The tuna was good, the wantons were bland. Red Wine Braised Short Ribs - on both the kids and adult menu - nice! They very good. Chicken Fingers - my daughter liked them Truffle fries - Good but a bit confusing. They served them with my daughters chicken fingers (chicken lying on top of the fries). I ordered them as an additional side. When they didn't come, I asked the waiter where they were. He said they are with the chicken fingers. First of all, so a child's order of chicken fingers comes with truffle fries? I don't know many kids other than my oldest daughter who like truffle fries. They are not a kid friendly item. Secondly, if I didn't order a side of truffle fries, does that mean the chicken fingers doesn't come with fries? Highly unusual. Anyhow, I got my side of truffle fries, separate from my daughters fries. they were very good. We opted not to have dessert here as we were not blown away by the 2 options. Lava cake or Blueberry cheesecake. The bathrooms were very clean.
google avatar

Yelp
Brunch menu eclectic, from sushi to BBQ short rib taco's. Grilled swordfish was the most succulent, flavorful I've ever had! Steamed mussels were also a gastrointestinal delight, but do the shellfish sniff test, as a couple were foul and obviously past the point of consumption. They comp'ed the mussels to their credit! Sushi was average. Service cater to please!
