After a recent overnight stay for work where I was upgraded to a very large clean room that even had a working record player and some 70s LPs to play, I liked the boutiquey feel of the place, so when my wife and I went back to New Orleans for a couple of nights, I was excited to take her to the cool hotel with the stylish retro vibe. Unfortunately I had not looked very far beyond the room on the business trip, because if I had I would not have gone back again, let alone take my wife there. Let me start with the only positive thing about the place - in the lobby, my wife's first impression was omg I love this place and the check in and concierge staff were super nice and welcoming. Off to a great start, but alas it was all downhill from there.
The regular rooms, even the upgraded "city view King", are tiny - like really really small. The whole place is filthy, and they clearly have a maintenance problem - like they just don't do any! The elevator has a loud banging noise that can be heard on half the floors day and night every time it goes up and down. The first room we were given smelled like sewer, the toilet was loose and the safe didn't work. They moved us - twice - and we thought we had a winner until bedtime when we found that one of the blinds was broken, neither of the bedside power outlets worked, and the dated USB outlets didn't make enough power to charge our newer style phones. This room was still dirty .. not dusted, nasty carpet, with a little mold in the shower. We went up to the rooftop bar and ordered a drink each - $44 later we went to sit down in the corner lounge area, but it was disgusting - like crime scene filthy with stained dusty couches, puke stains, and all the plants were wilted as they had not been watered in who knows how long - it was disgusting and very disappointing - between the neglected dingy appearance and the drink prices we understood why we were the only ones up there. Drinks are around the same price around the corner at the Roosevelt rooftop - just saying!
Then there was the restaurant - we ended up having to go there 3 times during our stay - the first for dinner - there has been a game that day and the restaurant had about a dozen really loud, drunk obnoxious fans who were using language and behaviour that just is not appropriate in any restaurant let alone a Hilton one. We actually didn't feel safe as some of the drunk loud people were overly aggressive. Staff made no attempt to do anything about it. We ordered simple meals from a pretty rude waiter and waited and waited - while waiting this gave us time to notice that the restaurant was pretty dirty as well - not quite as bad as the rooftop bar, but it was pretty grubby. Eventually after 40 minutes we went to the bar to ask how long it would be, only to see our meals sitting behind the bar - the waiter said they just came out .. they were stone cold. We ate a little as we were hungry and left. Breakfast was ordinary - not much different to say a Hampton Inn. My wife had to work from the hotel room and went down to get some lunch, but the restaurant staff was so rude she left and went elsewhere.
I usually don't write lengthy reviews, but this stay at what is supposed to be a Tapestry Collection Hilton was so bad in so many ways, that it needs to be written about. Hopefully Hilton may see the many recent poor reviews and take steps to turn it around - either that or take the Hilton name off it!
