9 Best Dive Bars in Charlotte, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"It’s daring to call this NoDa spot a dive, because the Ugly is quite a newbie compared to long-time Charlotte dives. It’s also relatively trendy — not in the way of its design or vibe — but in the way that Charlotteans are already fans of owner Vince Chirico’s cocktails at much fancier Idlewild next door. At its core, however, The Ugly was clearly shaped to capture the essence of a dive — it’s a casual, cheap, dark, beer-and—shot bar with a limited pared-back cocktail menu, like an Old Fashioned or bourbon ginger, and lots of Miller High Life." - Kayleigh Ruller

Charlotte’s Newest Bar, the Ugly, Opens on November 15 | Eater Carolinas

"Opening Wednesday, November 15 in NoDa, I would describe the Ugly (424 E 36th Street) as deliberately ‘just a bar’: no reservations or waitlists, a peg board behind the bar with plastic letters listing only six batch-made cocktails, canned beer (not just IPAs), a photo booth, and a bright red neon sign inviting passersby to embrace “The Good, The Bad, The Ugly,” which are also three weekly drink specials. I get the sense it leans toward an accessible, slightly dive-y vibe without pretension—bartenders are permitted to tell patrons seeking more complex drinks like a margarita to go next door to Idlewild, and the focus is explicitly not on top-shelf liquors or cocktail-lounge comforts. The food is quirky and low-effort—bags of chips, bar nuts, Hot Pockets straight from the grocery aisle, and possibly Jimmy Dean croissant breakfast sandwiches until 2 a.m.—while the decor and soundtrack are eclectic (reclaimed road signs, random Japanese art, and playlists ranging from Madonna and Tupac to banjo-laced folk), all meant to create a loose, everyone-welcome atmosphere (“as long as you’re not hurting anybody”) underscored by a framed “Better late than ugly” drawing inside the door." - Timothy DePeugh

Best Restaurants for a Date Night in Charlotte, North Carolina - Eater Carolinas

"The sleek couches, dim lighting, and high ceilings at Fairweather set a chic, sensual tone for a date night. Half of Fairweather’s menu is a dozen or so classic cocktails, but the other half is the bartender’s innovative twist on those classic drinks. A simple margarita becomes a smoky, bell pepper sipper, and a piña colada becomes an earthy matcha blend, priced $16 across the board. The dim lighting, coupled with small plates highlighting seafood, lends itself to intimate conversations. For an insider tip, make Monday the new date night with Fairweather’s $1 oysters, or pop over next door to its sister joint Idlewild." - Kayleigh Ruller

My first time at Fairweather was an amazing one. First, our service staff was attentive and friendly. Second, all the cocktails for my table were high quality and tasted amazing. Third, the food…I don’t have a favorite because they all tasted amazing. If I had to pick one, I would say the mussels dish. The food elevated the cocktail experience. If you haven’t been to Fairweather yet, make your way. I have a feeling that it will get so busy with the cocktail enthusiasts who enjoy dining with cocktails, it will be hard to get tables. I hope to return soon to experience few more amazing cocktails and food to go with them.

The Ugly isn't ugly, it's quite beautiful. This is a neat bar near the tracks & Chamber by Wooden Robot. If you aren't looking for it, it's actually quite easy to miss. Inside, there's old time bar mirrors & decor which fit the bar perfectly. The bartenders are quick & do a solid job. There's option of different types of ugly cocktails but let's be honest, the $2 Narragansett is the best deal in Charlotte. The cocktails are affordable for Charlotte which gives them an edge over many other options nearby. I'd recommend coming down, getting a gansett & a shot, & enjoy your time chatting with the locals. PS: The Charlotte map on the wall is really neat.

Went there on Monday for Oyster Happy Hour- $1 each. We tried all 4 kind of oysters, our favorites are Carolina Gold and Sweet Petite. Oysters are fresh and sweet! The other side dishes we ordered— 【Beef Tartare】 tender and flavored, a little bit too salty 【Salad】is also fresh 【Cocktails】the matcha Colada I ordered is too sweet for me, but my friends enjoyed their drinks. Overall satisfied experience. Though I would order more oysters rather than side dishes next time.

I really liked this place. It's a great date night spot. Really really good drinks. All the staff was super nice and helpful. The oysters were okay I wouldn't do them here again though. I really liked the ambience and how welcoming everyone made us feel. It's a very small spot but it's cozy in the good way.

I was visiting for the weekend and my friend has us go here on a Monday (they do 1$ oysters on Mondays so now you can get a little Wild) and it was so good you are able to try all the oysters and find your favorite! The drinks where all amazing and the food is so good. We did a big seafood night with oysters, shrimp, and salmon. We tried a couple drinks and they are all good. The staff is great and they are all very nice and helpful with the menu if you have any questions. You gotta try this place!

Couldn’t wait to try Fairweather in Charlotte North Carolina. We love Idlewild so much so I knew this would be the same. They have dollar oyster nights on Mondays and has a really amazing ambience. It’s almost like a lounge. We only had the oysters and we had a few drinks, and they were all amazing! Will definitely go back and try other things on the menu!

It’s $1 oysters night on Monday! Three different kinds to choose from. Fresh and amazing. The salmon crudo is another beautiful and wonderful dish. The beef carpaccio is delicious as well. They were busy so make reservations ahead of time for oysters night. Waitress was attentive - definitely will go again.

Cool bar next to the light rail. Jason rocks. I recommend the boilermakers for those on a budget. The previous establishment had food. They do not. Awesome vibe here.

Yelp
They call themselves Ugly but the inside is really quite charming for a dive bar. They definitely embrace dive bar prices though. It's a small area with friendly bar tenders so if you score good seats it is a great place to pregame, grab a night cap, or just enjoy some time with friends. The decor is pretty whacky too so that's always fun. Overall they deliver on what they say they will, they provide a watering hole to enjoy cheap drinks. Happy to have them around.

Yelp
Excellent ambiance - divey and dark! They do everything they say they will. This is is the perfect spot for a simple beer, a nightcap, or maybe a handful of beers if you score a good seat. Great prices and service.
