The Union Tavern - Review - Little Venice - London - The Infatuation

"Are human beings closely related to sea lions? We don’t know, but given how deliriously happy we are sat semi-horizontally on the water in Little Venice, we’re going to say yes. This pub a little further along the Grand Union Canal doesn’t have the kind of food that’ll make you transcend space and time, but they do have one of the best canal-side terraces in London. Head here with a group of mates, order the scotch egg, and see how many pints you can sink in the sunshine before resembling an actual sea lion. photo credit: Giulia Verdinelli" - Heidi Lauth Beasley

We came here on our last night London seeing as we were too tired to head into central London. A local told me this place used to be a proper pub but got yuppied out. Motorhead formed here. Joe Strummer jumped off the bridge into the canal to save someone though that tale may be a bit exaggerated. Anyway we came in and it was super loud because they were having a trivia night. The girl at the front was cool at first after explaining the set up. We decided to grab a table outside next to the aforementioned canal. Then I went up to order but the aforementioned girl had a little attitude when she asked for my table number. I don't know man, you didn't explain that part so down the stairs I went and then back up and then back down with the drinks. It was very pleasant outside especially with a view of the canal. However then we were informed that the outside area was closing so we went back upstairs. The food I got the fish and chips and she got the burger. The fish was excellent and well seasoned. The mint mushy peas were very nice. My lady said the burger was a little overcooked. And what's up with the scarcity with ketchup in the UK? We're Americans we drown our fries in that stuff. All in all a little wonky start as they say here but the food was good and the view was nice while it lasted and I was bummed they ran out of sticky toffee pudding. Would have been a nice ending to our trip. Next time London. After we went down the street to Angie's and had another round and that was London 2025 folks.

The beer garden is a lovely warm spot on a sunny day, quiet enough despite being in a busy area. Unfortunately they sell 'pizza' on the menu but it doesn't come with cheese which was somewhat disappointing.

Had a lovely drink with friends here today to cool off in the hot weather. The pub is beautiful and the terrace by the canal is a really gorgeous spot. The staff were busy and probably could have used another pair of hands but were still really kind and friendly - Ellis in particular. The food was disappointing im afraid We ordered the chicken tenders to share (burnt and dry sadly) and the nachos (not real cheese/queso was an American style sauce - not melted). Also found the ceaser salad dressing a bit strong but if you like anchovies you’d probably love it. Its been busy both times I’ve come so if theres good weather, id book a table. We’ll definitely be back for drinks and maybe to try the prawn tacos - looked amazing on the next table.

This is such a charming little pub, with a lovely beer garden and a terrace overlooking the canal. It’s a really pleasant spot to spend time with friends — a hidden gem, especially since places like this are quite rare around here. They offer a great selection of drinks, from beers and cocktails to non-alcoholic options, and the food is genuinely delicious. The atmosphere feels warm and relaxed, perfect for an afternoon drink, a casual evening out or a date.

Lovely pub across the river. I discovered this while biking in the area. I went there with friends and it was actually super nice. You can have the view on the river while it’s heating outside. It’s the perfect place for a date or a group of friends. I will come back !!

Google
On a city break and staying in the area and this was my local for 3 days. Absolutely brilliant pub with amazing food and the most perfect location beside the canal. Staff are extremely friendly and welcoming and if you have the chance of a Sunday lunch please do have it because it was delicious. Excellent choice of beers and wine of offer . It can get busy because it's such a good pub but don't let that put you off because you will always find a table after a short wait 10 out of 10

Google
Just out for an autumn walk at the Canal when I found this pub. So quick stop for a drink or two. Really nice, attentive & friendly staff giving great service. This pub offering cask n keg with some on fridge. They r offering food as well. Lovely bar n clean flood. I must say they have really clean toilets. Atmosphere is so cool. They didn’t disappoint me even worth to visit. Just few steps from the underground so easy accessible. Love the location at the edge of canal for great view. They have plenty of space out there to canal side for beautiful views. Recommend

Worst Sunday roast Previously I have eaten many a Sunday Roast and always found them very good and filling and highly recommended to people to try. But this visit I was truly surprised. I arrived at 16 45 and asked do they still have ant roasts left . I was informed that they still had ,So myself and another gentleman both ordered Roast Beef. After waiting over 40 minutes I asked a member of staff how long it would take. I was informed 20 minutes When I started that I'd been waiting over 40 minutes another member of staff went to find out And suddenly my roast Beef arrived. Sadly it was cold. When I managed to attract another number of staff . 'I told her the food was cold. " Her reply was 'Shall I take it back to the kitchen "? I was quite sure what to say to that question 'SO I said yes " When it comes back there was a slither of gravy on the plate I asked could I gave a little bit more gravy and was told yes but would have to pay for it accordingly to the eords from the chef I find this very insulting as the Roast Beef was just under £ 23.00. And to be honest even the thinly sliced Beef looked very sad like rag ends Then I gad to find another member of staff and ask for cutlery as I had none to eat my late lunch either. Sldo had to ask for salt pepper and horseradish sauce . All this they shoukd ask the customer irs basic hospitality in pubs restaurants. I scored this meal 5 out of 10. The other gentlemen said he woujd score it 4 out of 10 It's shocking when pubs are having a hard time The Union Tavern does not care about the customers but about trying to squeeze every possible pound out of the customer. Disgusting

Yelp
Nice pub in our neighborhood during our stay. Good selection of cask ales and guest taps. Food was solid - steak on the sandwich a bit tough, but tasty. Fish 'n chips were quite nice. Light, clean space, outdoor seating on the canal looked great, just a little too cold for us.

Yelp
We luckily walked by the pub on our way from parking to our apartment, wish we were here longer to come back EVERY night!! Food was excellent and beer outstanding, especially some amazing pale ales. Staff were very friendly. Highly recommended

Yelp
Monday night is great for cask ale lovers. All draught cask ales are just £3 on a Monday. Wednesday is great, with all the burgers on sale at £5. It is also their quiz night and gets packed as all the tables are reserved in advance. They have a great BBQ menu, but I wish they offered a roast option on a Sunday. Large outside terrace on the canal, is nice when the weather is good. The view of Westbourne Park Bus Garage, is not so great.

Yelp
Yum!!!! Traditional English Fish & Chips. So good! After arriving in London we saw that this tavern was walking distance from our hotel so we popped in for a pint and some fish and chips. The fish was so light and crisp and the tartar sauce was incredible. My boyfriend had an ale on tap and I had a cider. This place is so cozy inside and they have a beer terrace outside along the canal. Such a cute little spot with great food.

Yelp
What has happened to this pub? I booked a table for dinner on a Sunday evening for four for some friends over from the US who wanted dinner near Paddington. When they arrived there was no record of the reservation and they were just left to find their own table. After average food (and service) apparently it was too late to order dessert at 8pm! Fuller's have their work cut out with this place which is a terrible shame given the great location by the canal.

Meike B.

Yelp
This is the latest incarnation of what was until recently the Grand Union. Following several minor refurbs and noticeable fluctuation in staff, what was once my favourite local has recently been taken over by Fuller's. The spiral staircase has been replaced by a boring wooden one (probably more in keeping with health & safety regulations and certainly kinder to those wearing heals), the bar has been straightened, and the quirky pictures have gone as have the pies! The pub's greatest asset, the beer garden overlooking the Grand Union Canal, remains unchanged, and the Union Tavern may well become my favourite again. Staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable (even though they had only just been reopened for a day), and the large selection of draft beers impressive. The fish'n'chips tasted great, and we particularly appreciated the generous portions of ketchup and mayonnaise.

Yelp
Pub by the canal with a lot of keg & cask beer to offer. Enjoyed Peckham Rye IPA, from the Mondo Brewery. They have a 'human jukebox' night and as I stopped by shortly before Christmas he was putting his talents towards a very enjoyable version of E17 - Stay Another Day. I'd like to come back here.

Yelp
Great pub by the water. I would definitely come here on a sunny day but they have heaters outside under the umbrellas as well so it wasn't that bad when we came here on a chilly night in October. The view is a bit strange, of the bus garage across the canal but if you just angle yourself to one side on the benches you have a view of the water and the bridge and the birds swimming by. Lots of little rooms and nooks and crannies to situate in during the colder nights. Friendly service as well. Im with Zoe, watch out for the spiral stairs! Especially tipsy with two drinks in your hands.

Yelp
The Grand Union is one of my favourite pubs because it has a great oudoor seating area- a rare find in central London. In the colder months sit upstairs on the comfy sofa area and enjoy one of their 'famous pies' Just be careful of the spiral staircase when you've had one too many drinks!

Yelp
My local! Well not necessarily my closest local pub, but if there's ever a question of where to enjoy a few fine beers, this place always wins. Beer: phenomenal. Usually a good rolling selection of about 12 kegs and 4 casks with lots of bottles in the fridge. I would say the taps are somewhat consistent, but they do change it up, so not totally static. Casks change more often. They are one of the few places in London with Windsor & Eton Republika Pilsener on tap, which is pretty much the best craft lager in the UK IMHO. Try it, it never disappoints. Food: USA style BBQ. Superb pork, great burgers. My recommendation is the mac and cheese. Give it a minute to cool off (read: I've burned my mouth on it) then dive in and pretend no one is watching. Bliss! Atmosphere: cool vibe inside. Top notch canal-side garden outside. One of the best in London. Can get pretty packed on a nice day, but you can usually squeeze in. Overall: there are other pubs in London with great waterside patios, and other pubs with craft beer, but I've yet to find one that rocks both as well as Union. Even though it's my local, I would happily commute here for a pint of Republika and a mac and cheese.

Yelp
A super fun place to come hang out! They were playing some games when we got there. The guy running them was hysterical. We weren't very hungry, preferred Mac and cheese, chili cheese fries and Parmesan sweet corn. Everything was delicious! The service was fairly quick. You order at the bar and the bring it to your table. The entertainment was a bonus. So glad we stumbled upon it. Would definitely come again. PS. THEY HAVE WIFI!

Yelp
I have been to the pub a couple of times and absolut love it. So did yesterday - enjoyed the outside area over fish and chips and some lagers. Quirky interior and the pub got just the trendy pub charme - love it.

Yelp
It's ok, food reasonable and the outside seating along the canal is good. Nice modern interior without loosing its charm. It's a Fullers but has three or four microbrews on tap.

Yelp
I used to attend here quite a lot. And maybe I am being judgmental and old and grumpy but not a great place for an evening drink in my opinion. A lot better for drinks during the day and in summer time. Maybe just a bad night for me. Sorry!

Alex A.

Yelp
With wide selection of beers and a wonderful Canalside terrace, Union Tavern is one of the best places in the neighborhood to enjoy the sunshine(well, whenever it is). However, I was very disappointed with the food; tried almost everything-pork ribs, chicken wings, some combos, -most of them big disappointment.

Yelp
Amazing food for a pub!! Wide range of beers to choose from and a great, cozy atmosphere. The canal-side garden is perfect for a beer and lunch on a sunny day!

Yelp
No good things to say about food...maybe if you are looking to drink-good outside area by the canal. I came here last Sunday-December and I was not impressed at all! The pub Felt pretty uncosy, cold, the menu is really not that great-had Philly cheese steak sandwich- it was pretty greasy, steak was tough and I actually felt unwell for the rest of the day. Very unpleasant experience. I came with a group of friends so seen other food come out-it looked ok, American diner style but I felt that £12 for a though peace of meat on the baguette was an overkill and couldn't really be out amongst main courses on the menu. Wouldn't recommend!

Yelp
One of my regulars. Great food (American diner themed) and regularly changes the drinks it has on tap. Always busy and has a lovely beer garden over looking the canal.

Jordan B.

Yelp
Great little pub in the area! I love craft beers and there is a good selection here. The highlight would definitely be the seating outside along the canal. It's a fantastic place to chill out and enjoy a pint after work. Have yet to try the food but looks delish! Only problem would be the bar upstairs gets very busy during peak hours and you could end up waiting a small bit but worth the atmosphere! I could definitely seeing this being my new local!
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
A good craft beer pub with a downstairs bonus of an outside terrace overlooking the Grand Union Canal. Great for warmer weather. The beer selection is good but the prices are on the steep side in my opinion and service can be a bit slow despite friendly staff but overall I'm a fan.
google avatar

Charlie N.

Yelp
My local and I'm usually there at least once a week. A fantastic selection of beers, perfectly decent American BBQ food and a nice sunny spot outside by the canal in the summer (if you can get a table!). A great place.

Yelp
Just over the road from Westbourne Park tube station, right where the Notting Hill Carnival kicks off each year sits The Grand Union pub. I imagine it does quite a brisk trade over the August bank holiday weekend, but we popped in the day before, for some morning-after-the-night-before fodder. It wasn't terribly busy when we were there, so it wasn't that much of a problem that the service was polite, but not speedy. The interior design here is very tastefully done - lots of muted shades and period features, right down to the Belfast sink in the ladies toilet (although I do have to say that the fact that the toilet door didn't close properly was a bit of a let down - I'd rather have a functioning door than pretty ceramics). It has two floors, connected by a cast iron spiral staircase which leads down to the lower bar and the canal-side garden/terrace (where we sat to eat our brunch as the boats and ducks went by). It's a canal in the middle of London, so the view is one of the back of a bus depot rather than a rural idyll, but on a fresh Summer's day it was really quite pleasant. The food itself was very nice indeed - I went for the kedgeree and my sister had the eggs benedict and both of us agreed that it hit the spot perfectly. It was tasty and nourishing without being too heavy on the stomach, and for someone who is more used to northern prices, the bill wasn't too much of a shock to the system either. Recommended for lazy weekends.

Yelp
I wonder what happened to the spiral stairs!? they were fantastic. Its a shame the pub has lost some of its character, we walked in and was immediately transported to Shoreditch. I'm sure the spiral stairs went for a good enough reason but why paint the outside grey? its happened to so many pubs now. It has some lovely tiles underneath that grey paint. Anyway! the pub. Food is a cliché. It would be nice to have something other than meat served in a roasting tray. They usually have a fine selection of ale but was shocked that they had run out of London Pride so early one evening and considering its a Fullers pub... The garden is the pubs best asset. Staff are friendly enough, if not a bit overbearing. Yea its alright I suppose. Its lost its individuality though. Its very much like every other painted grey pub.

Adam S.

Yelp
Friendly staff, great selection of craft beers as well as the Fuller standards, and a nice open gas fire - what's not to like?!

O S.

Yelp
Fun spot with a canal view. Great live music on Thursdays. Friendly staff, fast food, yummy bites, good drinks.
