Had our wedding ceremony and reception here on 12/28. Seriously couldn’t recommend this place more, especially working with their coordinator, Sami! Sami went above and beyond to make our day perfect. Venue was absolutely gorgeous, food was delicious, 10/10 on all counts! Will forever be talking about this day!

We just had our wedding reception here on Saturday! It was so great. The space was amazing and had plenty of little places for people to go. The food was DELICIOUS. I have had people coming to me for days saying how impressed they were with the flavor of the food. Everything was super beautiful. The pictures we got in front of the building were exactly the backdrop I wanted. Additionally, the people we worked with were super helpful, particularly Sami. Would definitely recommend!

DJing at the University Club of St. Paul this past Saturday was an incredible experience. The venue is full of historic charm and elegance. I could actually overhear the guests complimenting it! I had a great time working with Michael and his team on the night of the event, they were organized, welcoming, and made everything run smoothly. My tour with Andrea ahead of time was also super helpful and enjoyable. I’m already looking forward to the next time I get to return!

Google
What a beautiful building! Perfect venue for any occasion, built in the late 1800's this place is something to marvel, from the decor to the architecture, this place will captivate you. Beautifully designed as a clubhouse and beautifully maintained. And the view is breathtaking, if you get a chance to stop in you will not regret it. There is a nice closet to hang your coats in the bathroom lobby, beautifully stocked bar and stunning dining room.

I have experienced this place. In general, the scenery here is peaceful and classic. The food is very delicious, the taste is just right.

Google
I got married here in December. Setting up for the wedding was pretty rocky, especially when I put in so much to make sure it went smooth. But I think what frustrates me the most is I emailed the owner about my experience & got zero response. The food was great & the venue is beautiful, but I wish I would have picked somewhere else.

Google
We had our wedding reception here in October and it was perfect. There seems to have been a changeover in event coordinators between when we started and our wedding, but Sami picked up our event and was incredibly helpful throughout the planning process! The space was beautiful, all of the staff were very helpful, the bartenders learned our guest’s drinks, and our guests said the food was great. We’d highly recommend the University Club as a wedding venue!

Google
A beautiful bell jar antique of a building. Wonderful service. Unsurpassed location. I photographed a wedding here in February and loved the space. Very cozy with a beautiful indoor space. Great light coming in which made ceremony photos easy peazy.

Yelp
Wonderful club tucked in Summit and near Cathedral Hill. We had our grooms dinner here years ago and recently rejoined. Beautiful old world design. Food is very good and the wine prices are more than fair. Calendar filled with events.

Yelp
My friend had her wedding at The University Club and the Club has messed up every bill and tried over charging them for several items.

Yelp
My initial thought after looking at this building was "Harry Potter", it sits on top of the ramsey hill overlooking Saint Paul. The interior is very comfortable, warm and looks pretty elegant. I enjoyed the serene environment, perfect to sit and relax with a good drink. The natural light from the many windows provide excellent ambience throughout the club. My visits here consisted of relaxing in the bar area, the staff remain at the ready to oblige, are personable and full of personality. Other conversations do not carry over I have also attended a few meetings which were catered upstairs in one of the meeting rooms. The food was excellent as well as the attention to detail from the staff. Cheers to the University club!

Yelp
I want to share a recent example of possible #bias and #racism in St Paul and how white people people in power ignored it. A young man of color in my family was at the University Club of St. Paul when two white managers asked him to leave the lounge. They said it was because other members had complained that the accompanying baby was cooing. Since the managers acknowledged that the baby wasn't crying, I emailed the owners of the University Club of St. Paul and Saint Paul Athletic Club and shared that I didn't think my family member would have been noticed nor treated like this if he was a White grandmother with her grandson. I was not surprised when the White owners insisted that it could not be #racism and appeared offended by my contention. I was shocked, however, that they did not meet with us to discuss our concerns and instead terminated our membership "effective immediately." Today when I was handing out flyers about this situation outside the University Club of St. Paul on the public sidewalk, the management called the police on me and trespassed me. (The police were very respectful and said I had the right to hand out flyers on the public sidewalk where I was.) It was hurtful that the owners disregard a person of color's experience of #bias. I hope that the membership and the St Paul community ask the owners 1) Why is the membership and management of the University Club of St. Paul predominantly White? 2) Does the University Club of St. Paul support multiculturalism and diversity in their club? Several members today said they were going to contact the management and were supportive of #diversity. I hope the management listens to the membership and their support of #diversity and #multiculturalism.

Yelp
We got a mailing advert for the University Club's remodeled dining room and wanted to try it out. The updated dining room is really nice. It's about the size of a largish cafe. Dark paneled wood, framed art, sconces shaped like animals, and a stunning view overlooking downtown Saint Paul from the hill on which the club sits. The window ledge is decorated with a detailed model of St. Paul from the early 1900s. I was expecting $$$$ prices, but was pleasantly surprised to see that the menu wasn't any more expensive, and actually more reasonable, than the new trendy restaurants in uptown, north loop, or north east Minneapolis. And the service was better here than those places. Attention to detail was there, things like water glasses always being refilled to the same level, place settings being laid out correctly and the waiter putting one hand behind his back and saying "Pardon my reach." The food is high quality American fare. I had chicken dijon. What I liked is that the food didn't taste like excessive salt and butter had been added. The 3 pudding desert was amazing with red wine. Quirks: When I made my reservation I was told about the club's dress code - hey no problem, I like dressing up for a high class meal. Tables are also set aside for club members, which might be an impediment if you aren't one.

Yelp
The Club maintains its ambience and sense of history. Food good and service excellent. I feel it is unfair to criticize the Club for racism....the organization BOOKS FOR AFRICA was started here over 30 years ago and continues to host African ambassadors and events thanks to the generosity of the owners.

Yelp
My parents are social members of the University Club and we love going there around the holidays for dinner. The decorations are great, and they have a really nice parlor area with a huge fireplace and comfy leather chairs. We've usually had pretty good experiences here, and the food is quite good, but last night the service was definitely lacking. First of all, they got our table mixed up with someone else so we had to wait for them to figure that out. Then it took forever for the waitress to come back and take our order. When I had a question about an entree and she didn't know the answer, she wasn't even willing to find out because "the kitchen is really busy and they aren't even answering their phone." Eventually we figured out the answer to my question, but only asking another server. The food took forever to come out, at least 45 minutes. Thankfully, it tasted great and was hot. The dessert was also quite good, I especially enjoyed the caramel apple crostatada. The molten chocolate cake is also good, but a little on the small side.

Yelp
It is so sad to see this institution that has been so valuable to the community falter and crumble, but this place seems to be in a free fall. Aside from the fact that the entire facility is in desperate disrepair (the pool area in particular seems to be the epicenter of neglect) the ownership/ management changes hours of operation with great frequency and a complete lack of logic. It seems that members are getting less and less for their fees with each passing season (what happened to the trademark, fresh homemade bread?). And (as stated by previous Yelpers) all concerns brought to the attention of the arrogant ownership falls on deaf ears. The management has been a veritable revolving door the last two years and constantly in a state of flux. I heard there has been a one hundred percent turnover, and it seems to be true. The members are missing key staff members who made the club experience very special. One might assume that if the owners treat the members so poorly and lack care for their landmark building, it follows that they must treat their staff with the same level of disdain. So good people seek employment elsewhere while the building slowly crumbles to dust. It is heartbreaking to see what is happening to what was once a vital, vibrant institution.

Yelp
I've been putting off joining for years. What resurrected my interest was I started going to another reading group, Readings by Writers, the third Tuesday of every month. We always have an early dinner first. The menu is seasonal and limited. We liked some selections more than others. My favorites are the buffets. Our first was the Valentine's day. Even the eggs benedict was hot and the hollandaise sauce was perfectly balanced. The beignets were delicious and house made. They actually seat you at the large tables, which is a good way to get to meet other members. Fridays are popular for hanging out at the club room with the fireplace. The wait staff are always offering free appetizers. I love reading by the fire and feeding it logs. I wish they had more reading light. I finally found an activity place I can enjoy.

Yelp
My parents were members here for a very long time, ending about 15 or so years ago. I remember clearly that the space was fun, but the food was merely average and the service poor. My dad enjoyed the space and my mom's family had history with the place though, so my parents went frequently, and I was a frequent companion. Recently we celebrated my mom's 85th birthday, and as a fun treat we thought a birthday dinner at the University Club would be a fun blast from the past event. Nothing has changed. The service for our visit was one of those situations where the server tolerates your existence, but clearly is not enjoying our time together. The food was expensive, and my Lo Mein was bad. My wife's meal was bad too. And the space hasn't changed a bit - and its looking a little rough around the edges as a result. It was fun for my mom though, so two stars for nostalgia and location.

Yelp
Traveling to Minneapolis on academic business, I needed to meet some people who suggested lunch at the University Club. It was a great decision and I enjoyed the architecture, the waitstaff service, food, and of course, the conversation that ensued. Such a beautiful venue, I regret that I am only a visitor, but will certainly welcome a return trip.

Yelp
My company had its annual holiday party here this past weekend. I planned most of the event and had a lot of contact with the University Club's food and beverage director. Despite being a total flake and frustrating to work with from start to finish, he was friendly and managed to get most of the details right. There was one snafu with one of the servers, but once I pointed out her error, she swiftly corrected it. Everyone who attended really enjoyed themselves. The food was decent - although I heard some say their dishes were really salty. My salad was quite wilty and had almost no vinaigrette on it, but I didn't hear anyone else complaining. Those of us who stuck around after the party to have drinks in the members only bar had even more fun. The bartenders were fantastic....and nice to look at.

Yelp
The University Club was fabulous for our wedding reception! I love Summit Avenue, and really wanted a mansion there, and the view at the University Club was by far the best. They guided me each step of the way throughout the planning process and made everything incredibly easy! They were so helpful with recommending vendors, and helping us plan our menu, and come the big day, my fiance and I didn't have to think about ONE thing. Like a wedding reception should be, we were able to just be there and enjoy our day, the staff at the University Club made sure we were where we needed to be at all times and were very accomodating to all of our needs and our guests! The rooms were gorgeous, the food was excellent, and they worked wonderfully with all our vendors as well to be sure the day was nothing less than perfect for us. Great place! I would HIGHLY recommend the University Club to any future bride and hubby to be!

Yelp
Following our daughter's out-of-town wedding, we scheduled a Sunday brunch at the University Club St. Paul to introduce the recently-married couple to our many friends who had not been able to attend the wedding. We had previously attended a wedding reception at the Club and had been very impressed. Our entire experience was excellent. It is a beautiful venue, with many windows, a lot of sunlight, a large banquet room and a connected area excellent for serving drinks. The food, served buffet style, was remarkably good. Many guests commented on how delicious it was. The Club was very flexible and supportive as to some dietary needs. The service during the meal was very professional - very available and responsive without being intrusive. The servers were friendly and upbeat. The planning process was equally remarkable. We worked primarily with Ms. Julia Struve, who was knowledgeable, helpful, very responsive, and graciously flexible when the attendance count dropped slightly a few days before the event. It being winter, we had the Club arrange a valet service, and that service also performed well. We recommend the University Club very highly.

Yelp
Pool area was surprisingly rundown. Definitely did not have a "club" feel. Bummer, hope they remodel.

Yelp
The University Club is a typical example of the type of property the owner purchases and then neglects. It is a historical and important landmark in Saint Paul full of unused potential. Unfortunately just enough is invested in the place where you can't call it run down, but not enough is invested where the Club could exist in its natural grandeur. Despite the not so great food, the tennis court that isn't maintained, the 20-year-old playground, and the code-violation of a flagpole that is at a 75 degree angle leaning ominously over Ramsey Hill, the University Club still has enough members to survive. The pool might be its only fine attribute. Someday this Club will be one of the Twin Cities finest.

Yelp
My sister recently held her wedding with the University Club of Saint Paul (January 2011), and it was truly a memorable night for everyone. The wedding was held in the downtown location, which was unbelievably beautiful. The ambiance was so romantic, and the building so incredibly charming. Aside from the beautiful location (and delicious food!), the waitstaff was very attentive and incredibly nice. We had a last minute change to table seating, which they gladly helped us with, and we also had 2 more guests join us who were not originally counted for meals. The staff happily took the additional guests' orders for their meal, and the kitchen put it out flawlessly. We also had a guest with a nut allergy, and the staff took additional care to meet with her and make sure that everything from her salad dressing to her entree to her dessert were free of nuts. Considering there were over 230 people at this wedding, I was very impressed that they took the time to truly serve this individual. The staff was always there to help, but didn't overstep their boundaries and linger around the tables too much. Although the entire staff was great, my sister and my's personal favorite was Ray. Ray was assigned to the head table and to the table that sat our parents, and was an absolute riot. He must be 85! But he was cracking jokes, danced with my sister, and took pictures with all of us at the end of the night. He truly made my sister's night extra special, and gave us even more of an unforgettable time! The guests I have talked to had a ball. Many commented on how great the wait staff was, and how accomodating both the wait staff and the hotel staff were (some of the guests stayed in Hotel 340, which is in the same building - highly recommended!). Overall, it was an amazing night, not just for the bride and groom, but for everyone who attended the wedding. I'm hoping that some of the couples that attended the night hold their wedding at this location, too - I can't wait to come back!! Sarah (sister of the bride/maid of honor)

Yelp
We had my niece's wedding last weekend at the University Club downtown St Paul Ballroom. I want to thank the staff for all their hard work & professionalism! They were always available for any questions or concerns. The entire place was beautiful and everyone we worked with all played a part in making her and her fiancé's dreams come true!

Yelp
We tried an event at the University Club and it was aweful. Everything from the food to the service. We would not use them again. I would recomend staying away from any event at the University Club.

Yelp
I've been here many times for meetings, weddings, and even a wine tasting. This is a beautiful place in a historic neighborhood. This club features beautiful fireplaces, chandeliers, breath-taking views and beautiful wood architecture.

Yelp
Me and my friend decided to go to the pool on a hot summer day recently. We swam in the poorly maintained leaf-filled pool for a solid 20-minutes, then decided we were getting hungry. According to what we saw, we were supposed to lift up these cheap plastic flags and wait for servers to come and give us menus, and take our orders. That never happened. We waited and waited for an hour, violently waving our plastic flags as waiters passed us by, meanwhile taking everyone else's order but ours. Our service was far from acceptable. Not to mention, we pay for a membership and received absolutely no service whatsoever. Fix your shit. Also, the pool was ridden with kids with soiled clothing and bloody noses, and the life guards did nothing to stop it. I recommend not swallowing any of that pool water. Also, the tennis court was riddled with weeds and vines, the paint in the pool was peeling off easily, and the stairs seemed anything but stable. We come to the U. Club and expect some form of service. This was highly dissapointing considering all the hub-bub I've heard about this establishment. I would give 0/5 but yelp doesn't allow it.

MM R.

Yelp
This is a lovely old club on Summit Avenue. Gorgeous entertaining rooms and foyer. The pool and tennis court are old but kids still enjoy summer days there. Must use valet parking for events as parking on the very steep Ramsey Hill (yes the hills is sooo steep). Private membership.

Yelp
Don't bother coming for breakfast. I went for breakfast on a Sunday morning, to take advantage of a "free April breakfast" deal mailed to us, and to see how the food/service has changed since I last was a member. My girlfriend and I were members some years ago, but opted out after a while, mostly because the food at the restaurant was extremely hit and miss. We rejoined this year to take advantage of the downtown health club facility, so we were looking forward to a new experience at the Summit Avenue location's restaurant. Things have not changed, unfortunately. First, my expectations for service and food quality are pretty high, given that the facility is upscale, gorgeous, has a long history of service and hospitality, and that it is related, management-wise, to W.A. Frost, which has exemplary service. The service at the U Club is in no way close to that at W.A. Frost, however. It is also related, chef-wise to Frost, as the Executive Chef at the U Club is a former chef at Frost. We arrived one Sunday mid-morning (10 AM), and were eventually greeted and seated in a mostly empty dining room. There were two other tables seated, one of which left shortly after we arrived. We were poured water and coffee very quickly, but then left alone for about 10 minutes with our one page menus. We eventually ordered, and were again left alone for about 15 minutes. I did finally flag our server down for more coffee, and he left, and must have had to go to a different part of the building for it, as it was another 5 minutes or so before he returned with it. Then another 20 minute wait. I finally did catch the eye of another employee, whom I asked to locate our server, so I could find out if the restaurant had, in fact, opened the kitchen for the day. The server arrived and promised to go see what the delay was. He came back with our food, which in all fairness, was pretty good. However, it was not a ton of food, and it was not hard to prepare, or shouldn't have been if executed properly. I have no idea what the delay was, but we didn't begin to eat our breakfast until about 50 minutes after ordering it, and this in an empty restaurant. Add this unacceptable delay to the horrible, uncomfortable dining room chairs, and the complete non-participation of our server in our dining experience, and what you get is a bad restaurant. There isn't any other way of putting it. A fellow member and friend had almost the exact same experience a couple of weeks ago, only their wait was over an hour. For breakfast. In an empty restaurant. The facility itself is beautiful, the views from the restaurant are spectacular, the location is close to everything, the clientele pay to belong.... There is so much going for this place, that to have it under-perform the way it does is baffling and unfortunate. In my humble opinion, if Robert Crew (Manager) were to pay a bit more attention to this property, it might begin to catch up to W. A. Frost.

Yelp
My sister got married here in August 2008. The following were the issues: The food was TERRIBLE. The lettuce was so wilty it looked and tasted like it had been sitting in the sun for hours before it was served. It was so bad most of the guests opted not to eat their salad at all...it was so embarassing. Additionally they required the dressing to be on the salad ahead of time and they DRENCHED the soggy lettuce in it. The night of the wedding they changed the kind of chicken that was being served. They were supposed to put out ten units of punch, which they said was enough for our group of 184 but it ran out after the first half hour. They ran out of liquor (not beer- just liquor) and unfortunately our family are not big beer/wine people so people were leaving the wedding at about 10pm because it was either water or soft liquor. My mom had certain cups ordered for the reception and she was told that it wouldn't be an issue to use them. They were left on the punch table the morning of the wedding (where they were supposed to be) and to this day we have no clue what happened to them...they certainly did not get used! To make matters worse, the University Club just contacted my sister and her husband about two weeks ago to say they owe almost $1,300 more, even though they have records stating they paid the entire bill (without any money taken off for all the screw ups). Infact, their statement shows that the Club was supposed to charge the final amount to be $800 and they charged $1,400 ($600 more than they were given permission for) and when it was addressed after my sister looked at her bank statement, they said that they found extra fees after they spoke with my sister on the phone for that final payment. IS THAT EVEN LEGAL?!?!? My sister is going to have this club take her and her husband to small claims court since they have records that show they clearly paid everything, but our entire family is just enraged that they would come back to them for MORE money when we were just glad to never have to deal with this organization again. Please do NOT let anyone you know use this center for any important events within their life!! They are so horrible it is painful!!

Yelp
THis past Tuesday, we had lunch here after my father's service at Nativiyty Churfch (see my review.) The atmosphere is very eligent with all of the woodwork and eligent dining room with comfortable chairs and table cloths. The food, served buffet style, is excellent. The turkey sandwich is excellent with what tastes like oven roasted turkey, fresh tomatos, onions, pepper jack, and creamy mustard on fresh white bread. The pasta salad is excellent with a skinny, twisted pasta with artichokes and olives in a light vinigry dressing. For dessert, the oatmeal cookies, brownies, and sugar cookies are sinful; the oatmeal moist with just the right amount of oatmeal and rasins, the sugar cookie with just the right amount of sugar, not overly sweet, and the browny moist, sweet, and loaded with creamy frosting; definitely not sickingly sweet.! The staff is very friendly and helped us bag leftovers to take back to our friends' for a gettotogether later that evening. The valaes are very friendly and professional, parking and returning cars in a timely manner. For $4000, we definitely got what we payed for; my fathedr would have definitely wanted such opulant splendor. So, for excellent food with friendly service in a an upscale atmosphere with friendly valaes at a spendy but well worth it price, The University Club cannot be beat. Keep up the good work guys.!

Yelp
I held my wedding there this August. It was interesting. The lady in charge was always MIA every time we were to hold a meeting, or tasting, or whatever. The bartenders over served my husband on the night of the wedding. One of the guests (not the bartender himself) stopped the bartender from serving him anymore alcohol, to which the bartender replied: It is his wedding, he paid for it, he can drink what he wants. WTF. Just like any bar the bartender is one the one held liable. I basically sat up all night, on my wedding night feeding my husband water so he didn't die. Many people in attendance at the wedding, including doctors, nurses, lawyers...were fearful for his safety and the possibility of alcohol poisoning. They truly didn't care, don't care, and can only offer up excuses and various timelines that are fictitious of the various situations that happened that evening. Beware of this venue. We had staff members going into rooms that held personal belongings while the party was going on downstairs without any head's up. Then they lied and said that they were instructed to clean the rooms at 11. The staff members were in those rooms hours before that. I'm seeking legal counsel, as it sounds like a breach of contract. The environment was not safe. We left our wedding at 11, after tending to my husband for hours. Just because he is the groom, doesn't mean that he is invisible to alcohol poisoning. I feel as though a verbal apology means nothing, as they feel as though their staff is trained. We wanted a nice wedding. We paid for a nice wedding. What we got were lies, excuses, and a runaround and almost alcohol poisoning. We are severely disappointed at the ruined wedding. Hopefully they change their ways, obviously for us it is too late. Lies, excuses, dodging the issue. Obviously they stand behind the bartender's words and would rather ruin a wedding than admit to their shortcomings. Someone needs to be held accountable for allowing my husband to continue to drink all night and for what the bartender said to my guest about allowing him to continue to drink. Stay far away from this place! NOt the classy establishment I thought they were.
