The Best Sports Bars in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"While not really a sports bar, small dive The Upper Quarter is one of the best places to catch a game. Tucked away on the corner of Burgundy and Bienville Streets, this French Quarter gem serves Who Dat punch on game day and food from Messina’s alongside a slew of delightful regulars." - Eater Staff

This little hole in the wall is great. Awesome place full of locals and tourists. When we stayed at the hotel next door this was our go to watering hole. Friendly staff, great drinks and even better people. Don’t miss the pop up food vendors either. Some of the best tacos I’ve had. Always felt welcome and always left happy and libated

This is a great bar in the french quarter where you can mingle with the locals and save some money! The owners are awesome people that welcomed us in and we felt as part of a family. And the Saints football games! super fun!!!! we stop there every time we are in town, one of our favorite bars this side of the mississippi. They do not have a kitchen, but when we were there they had locals bringing dishes to share, and that was amazing.

Awesome bar to visit. A definite friendly neighbourhood bar with accommodating barman in a character filled space .

We were in New Orleans for a bachelor party weekend and topped it off with a visit to The Upper Quarter. Jason was super welcoming and a great host. It’s a great spot to wind down at the end of the evening.

The cheapest beer I found. Great atmosphere for the game and just on a chilled evening . Nice bar staff. Generally nice people who drink there I found and I went twice. Match day was an experience for me but great fun.

Walked into bar, went to the bathroom went to order drinks, their was four of us in my group, bartender (bald head glasses) asked if we were just going to order two drinks when we had a group of four, got mad and kicked us out for no reason. Btw we were going to order four drinks. We WILL not be back. He was irritated we were there. Clearly didn’t like his job. Everywhere else was FANTASTIC in Nola. I have never been kicked out of a bar. First time for everything I guess lol Edit: I’d like to add after owners response, it was not a threat, he said he wished he could break it on his head after he told us to get out for NOT ordering 4 drinks at one time. Just wish he would have been honest to you about the situation is all. Plenty of other witnesses. Thank you for responding. :)

A MUST spot for Saints fans! Wonderful people and service. Conveniently located. Pudding shots provided for every touchdown. Amazing atmosphere and food was provided! Highly recommend!!!

Yelp
This is a spot where the service industry frequents. It was fun to see people hanging out and enjoying themselves. It's a dive bar but you can stop in and grab a drink and take it all over. I do I'm t know if they had food. Nice old school spot.

Yelp
We came here because a google search for New Orleans trivia nights listed this as one of them. When we got here they said they haven't had trivia for years. But that aside, the bartender was nice and they had some decent drink specials so we stayed for a drink. It's a small place but the other customers, I assume locals, were friendly. As a tourist I don't know that I'd recommend this place but if you are local and/or want a decent drink at a good price maybe stop on in!

Yelp
The overall bar is pretty good but the bartender is a pure asshole he's very rude with a horrible attitude I asked for two whisky and Coke and I asked him to put the nice lady sitting next to drink on my tab he makes my drinks proceeds to make a third drink and all I said was I only ordered two drinks and paying for the drink the lady already has he immediately gets angry starts yelling at me snatches my card then told me I can get tf out I was so confused and speechless locals saw what happened and said he's always like that and they hates when he works because he's always nasty and rude to customers

Yelp
Our bartender Grace made us feel at home here. We love the vibe and simplicity of the place and really enjoyed getting to talk to the locals. It was great being away from the hustle and bustle of Bourbon St which isn't really our thing. We'll definitely be returning before our trip is over and wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Upper Quarter to friends who plan to visit NOLA.

Yelp
Cute place with good waitstaff, clean environment (though very New Orleans feel) and the food was excellent! All in all, this place has history and is a wonderful place to hop into for a quick drink and/or yummy food.

Yelp
I've spent a lot of time thinking of how to properly explain my love of this bar. Short story: it's a locals paradise. The bartenders and other patrons will quickly know your name. It's the "Cheers" of the French Quarter. Few tourists and plenty of love. (but tourists are definitely welcome and will get the same warmth upon entering). Cheap drinks and usually a few dogs to pet. The owners pour their love into this bar and it shows. You might find it empty or it might be so full you can't find a barstool to sit on. Either way, you're likely to find a friend. Long story: Six years ago I went on a bar crawl with a group of friends. We had never been here and walked in for a quick drink. The bar was next to empty, and although the drinks were cheap and the music was good, we were ready to head on. Everyone except for my husband - he's a real chatty Cathy and had developed a deep conversation with a man at least 40 years our senior. During my attempt to get my husband to wrap it up the older gentleman began telling us about Saints Sunday's at the bar and why we should come for the following game day. He began telling us "We all take pudding shots for touchdowns and we're all so proud of the bar" his use of the word "we" led us to believe he was an owner. When we asked if he held ownership in the bar he said "no, but we all kind of own it. It's our bar. It's the neighborhoods bar and we're all proud". Done. Sold. Any bar that the patrons loved so much they took pride in its success and felt a sense of ownership I was down to be at. My husband and I dutifully went the following Sunday and every single thing that man told us was true. (Shoutout Caesar) It's fun. It's wild. There's pudding shots. There's the purest sense of community. Six years later this is the only bar I deem worthy of watching the Saints. More importantly - six years later this bar has become another home, a safe place, a family. Come here. In a city filled with dive bars I can honestly tell you this bar is one of a kind.

Yelp
Great local bar with good local pub vibe! Owners are awesome. Definitely worth stopping in, especially if a Saints Gameday

Yelp
Fantastic local bar with awesome owners! Excellent pop-up food too! Awesome place to watch sports too!

Yelp
Walked down to this joint after the Three Legged Dog. A small clean well lit pub with bottled beer, drinks and chips. Frequented by locals and friendly people. Good time watching football highly recommended.

Yelp
One of the best hidden secrets in the city. The crawfish boil here on Thursday is arguably the best in the city. They use tobacco pulp from Avery Island to give it an extra kick I've never experienced before. They make the tobacco in barrels, and the left over residue that drys up in the barrel happens to go extremely well in a boil. And since it's right at the end of March, the crawfish were huge. The bar has the original floor dating back to the 1890s, which gives the place a old bar feel. In the back patio you are surrounded by condos on the 1st and second floor, that were once slave quarters, and brothels. I got all this information from the owner Jeff, who is a super nice guy, who gave us the history of the building. Definitely in my rotation now!

Yelp
Watched the CFP 2015 Semifinals at the Upper Quarter (Clemson vs Oklahoma - Orange Bowl)! What a GREAT evening, I will always remember The Upper Quarter and The Tigers BIG win over the Sooner! Go Tigers! Next night watched Ole Miss beat Okie State in the 2016 Sugar Bowl.

Yelp
Very disappointed as walked in on a local's suggestion. Sat 10 minutes nobody acknowledging us there so left. 2 other people in the establishment. Sorry not sorry left. Taking my business to someone who wants it and acknowledge people walking inside. Next adventure in NOLA.

Yelp
Great little neighborhood bar with limited seating. Friendly people, quiet on the night we went. Bartender was on top of it, educated and helpful with tips on the local area. We just had a few drinks, a shot for a buddy who's no longer with us. Was easy to sit around and enjoy ourselves with out to many crazies. If I lived in the area I would most certainly make it my local spot.

Yelp
Super fun atmosphere! Great owners and delicious cocktailss! Highly recommend!! Best bar in the French Quarter!
google avatar

Marc R.

Yelp
A small neighborhood bar that appreciates locals and tourists alike. Dive bar prices in upper end of the French Quarter. Worth the few extra steps.

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Stumbled across this hidden gem during our trip to NOLA. Bourbon street was a bit too much for our group and this was the perfect spot for us. Captain Kirk was great and kept the drinks coming. Recommend checking out this spot and if we are ever back in NOLA we will be back.
google avatar

Alexandra B.

Yelp
I will keep begging the owner on Facebook for crawfish but all the food pop ups are cool and the drinks are cheap!
google avatar

Jamie T.

Yelp
Some of the best crawfish boil I have ever had. Jeff did a great job. Love this place.

Yelp
The Upper Quarter is a safe place for locals to go in the touristy French Quarter and is cleaner than your typical New Orleans dive. It is small enough where everyone in the whole room just talks to one another, joining in each other's conversation and friendly banter. They have trivia on Wednesday nights starting at 7 and winners receive free drink tokens. They allow dogs in the bar and there is also a cute little patio in the back. Tons of NOLA art and memorabilia cover the walls. This place just gives me a happy, cozy feeling and the bartenders are incredibly nice.

Joseph B.

Yelp
For a small neighborhood bar, this long time local felt like a badly treated tourist. Big white bartender was not welcoming or friendly. Not hello, how are you, nothing. Seemed like the game was more important. Badly made drink, poured it out in bathroom. Would not recommend this place with him there.

Yelp
This bar is great if you love really smokey, peaty Scotch, However I must say I was disappointed with the Duck Feet. If you are a connoisseur of, and enjoy a tasty Duck Foot from time to time, please bring your recipe with you.

Yelp
Jason was awesome! Hilarious and makes a strong drink. Make sure to stop by next time you're in NOLA.

Yelp
This bar is the epitome of what a NOLA neighborhood bar should be. Grandiose bartenders and fabulous conversation. This is the place to go when you are ready escape from the madness of Bourbon chaos! As a local I give this place 10 stars!!!! Ask for Jay or Shawn they are both charming and intelligent gentlemen!

Yelp
Thanks to our waiter for pointing us to this gem! I love a dive bar and this could definitely be classified as such. The drinks were cheap, bartender and customers friendly and talkative. This was a great stop, off of Bourbon St.
google avatar

Yelp
This bar is a hidden gem. It is located off the quarter and the owner and staff are great. We have the best time here. It's affordable and the drinks are made correctly. The patrons are just as good. Always a great crowd. It definitely your loss if you don't visit.

Yelp
This is the epitome of a great neighborhood bar. We had just moved to New Orleans and wandered in because it was so close to our apartment. Marie, one of the owners, made us welcome immediately. And the next time we popped in she remembered our names. The bartenders and patrons are friendly, the drinks are inexpensive, and there is no better place to watch a Saints game. We are so lucky to have this bar in our neighborhood.

Yelp
A great neighborhood bar in a perfect location. Blocks away from the Saenger and Bourbon Street (if that's your thing), the Upper Quarter is one of a handful of bars in the Quarter frequented by locals. Very friendly bar staff. You can't beat the Upper Quarter when the Saints are playing.

Vincent H.

Yelp
This place had the worst customer service by far. I am from Florida and he made me and my friends feel unwelcome and like children.

Stephen B.

Yelp
A great little neighborhood bar. The bartender and one of the owners, the lovely Marie, was relaxed and friendly, and super knowledgeable about the surrounding area. The regulars were welcoming and friendly too. Away from the heavy touristy areas this is a fun place for a drink and conversation. (Review by Karen B)

Yelp
I truly hate yelping but this place was too awesome not to yelp. From the friendly patrons to the kickass bartender Jay it felt like I was in my hometown bar not some far away town. It was just welcoming and the drinks are priced just right and made perfect. Definitely a fan of this place
google avatar

Colin K.

Yelp
This is hands down my favorite French quarter bar. A friend introduced me to this place and their owner who is an incredibly nice fun guy to speak with and he proudly runs a great locals bar. The prices are perfect and the bartenders are all laid back. They have a juke box as well and small courtyard

Hordan S.

Yelp
My wife and I were looking for a place to catch the Saints game on thanksgiving night so I googled "best saints bar in New Orleans" man I'm I glad to have found this place. We were greeted immediately as we walked in, grab a seat at the bar and watch as the locals started to flood in all dukes up in their Saints apparel. Even though we were from HAWAII the bar owners Dave and Mary and their staff made as feel right at home. Thank you for your hospitality and we'll definitely be back the next time we're in New Orleans. WHO DAT!

Yelp
Very good Quarter neighborhood bar, friendly and welcoming. Nice late night off the beaten path place.

Katie M.

Yelp
The UQ is the perfect mix of a neighborhood atmosphere, friendly people, great management, and easy access to all of the FQ and CBD. What more could you ask for? Cold beer? Yup. Got that, too.

Yelp
A place for locals - see Jamie on Sunday afternoons - he's a lovely gent from England who moved to NOLA by way of NYC. Made me a slammin' basil smash cocktail. It's a small simple place - not a dive - just a bar without the hoopla of Bourbon Street. I had really good conversations with the folks there.

Yelp
Highly recommended! I was fortunate enough that Jay was working, that boy knows his sh*t and was busting his a** all night! Having been in the biz for awhile, I know a decent employee when I see one and he set the bar higher...no pun intended. all in all a cool place, nice staff and definitely worth a visit. Check it ou

Yelp
Great drink specials including beer and shot combos!

Francesca B.

Yelp
EXTREMELY rude staff. Lost a phone and came to come get it. They called the phone asking if we were going to come get it. We obviously wanted the phone but every time we went to the bar during its "open" hours it was closed. And we tried for two days to get it. We show up, no hello, just "there's no kids allowed in here". (My friends and I are all 22/23 years old). And it was 2 in the afternoon... we weren't even there to drink, just get the phone, which is what we told him. He said he didn't care and that he still needed to "check our Id's NOW". We hand him our ID's and he proceeds to pull out a flashlight and put them on all the ID's. He then says "i guess this works" to one of our friends IDs. After he was done checking, the phone was sitting in plain view right behind him, he asked for the owners name and gave it back. All of that just for coming to get a phone? unnecessary and insulting. Stay away from the big burly bald white guy at all costs

Brian K.

Yelp
This place was the highlight of our visit to NOLA, largely because we were the only tourists in the place! The bartender/owner was so personable and makes a mean drink for half the price of some other places nearby. Not to be overlooked are the beer & shot specials... I was a particular fan of High Life + Jameson's for a whopping $6. That's a good deal no matter where you are and to find it in the French Quarter is astounding. This place is a landing spot for local service industry folks when they get off work and we got hooked up with all the info we could have hoped for about what to see and where to go. Definitely not to be missed. We'll be sure to hit it again before we leave!

Yelp
Awesome neighborhood bar for neighborhood people - but visitors are loved too! Free (amazing) food during Saints games and out-of-this-world pudding shots when the Saints score. Great stuff!

Joseph B.

Yelp
cool bar off of bourbon. cozy, not a huge beer selection, and friendly staff. was a great place to get away from normal NO craziness.
