"Oakland’s Uptown Nightclub, a 15-year-old nightclub that’s hosted acts like Ice Cube, Green Day, KRS One, and the English Beat, won’t reopen when bars are allowed to reopen, its owners announced. It’s just the latest Bay Area live music venue to shutter in recent months, many due to the pandemic. Owners Bob Fratti and Kevin Burns opened the Uptown in 2005, which, as the Bay Area News Group put it, was “before the revitalization of the Uptown District made the area a destination.” While the Uptown’s stage was its focal point, just as significant was its vast mahogany bar that, according to its owners, traveled through the Panama Canal to reach Oakland at some time in the dim past, eventually landing at Jack London Square’s Old Spaghetti Factory before settling into its present location. Though the nightclub was initially applauded for its role in the city’s arts community, the Uptown soon floundered and shuttered. It reopened 2007 with a trio of new owners, nightlife veteran Larry Trujillo and physicians Ray Yeh and Robbin Green-Yeh; and with a lineup of acts like the Buzzcocks, the Dead Kennedys, and Agent Orange racking up “best rock club” laurels from local publications along the way. Though the bar was busy, behind the scenes its owners continued to lose money, telling the East Bay Times in 2014 that they’d invested “hundreds of thousands of dollars” into the bar. “The Uptown is fantastic and it’s successful in the sense that we’ve had amazing people on stage, but financially, it hasn’t made a dime,” Green-Yeh said at the time, “There are a lot more expenses to owning a nightclub than people realize, than I think we realized.” The financial pressure prompted the trio to close the Uptown yet again, the East Bay Express reported in the fall of 2014. “We opened before the Fox [Theater],” Trujillo noted to the alt-weekly, saying that during the bar’s second run, “we’ve had everyone from Green Day to Ice Cube.” According to Green-Yeh, by closing they hoped to lure a buyer for the business, but acknowledged that even though “there’s local interest, I don’t know if there’s local money.” A little more than a year later, the Uptown reopened yet again. Green-Yeh and Yeh were the sole owners at that point, again booking national touring acts as well as hosting popular local club nights. The Uptown’s last show was on March 14, and then it went dark, as the Bay Area’s shelter-in-place order closed all bar and nightclub doors. At the beginning of the shutdown, Uptown experimented a bit with virtual events and fundraisers, but those outlets were not enough to keep the business afloat. Writing on the Uptown’s GoFundMe page on September 4, Green-Yeh said that “with no date in sight when having live entertainment will be safe, we just cannot afford to continue to pay our rent and other expenses with no income in the foreseeable future,” and that the Uptown would close for good. “The Uptown was never a financial investment for us,” Green-Yeh writes, saying that “it was always a labor of love and the dividends it paid are measured in the wonderful friendships that sprung from the shared love of music.” One might wonder, given how many times the Uptown has risen from the ashes, if a third reopening is in the works. That question was posed a few times in the hundreds of Facebook responses to the closure, but the answer, again and again, appeared to be that its owners are serious about closing, and don’t plan to revive the spot." - Eve Batey

Good place for a drink and live music. A big variety of music rolls through here which is nice.

Google
Great layout for drinks/and shows. General admission you have to stand. If it's a show you're not all that into it's a good situation for going back and forth from show area and bar. I can't stand that long so I thought seated tickets were worth it. If you're a smoker, they have a smoker's area so you don't have to leave the venue, and you can bring your drink! Parking is limited and expensive. I'd definitely go again and would recommend it.

Google
If you would like to experience absolutely outstanding staff, chill locals, be a part of Oaklands history and have grown tired of boring run of the mill places, this is a must visit venue. It's a "dive bar" with class. Simply awesome local music performers and owners who ensure all patrons are taken care of. I will definitely be coming back and bringing my friends as these venues are extremely hard to find these days A+++++.

Google
I I LOVE THE UPTOWN!!! My old band, Lipstick Conspiracy played there years ago! It's a smaller, more intimate club. Where you can get up close to your favorite bands/performers. Awesome stage setup where bands can get on and off stage super fast! Chill bartenders, happy to chat while hooking you up. I was sad to hear rumours that they were closing, but it looks that may not be true? If you get a chance to see a favorite of yours there, by all means check it out!

Came all the way from manteca on my birthday to enjoy the comedy show as well as have a drink...The bartender was extremely rude to us...the moment I asked what drink would she recommend Thats fruity and strong...she was not helpful and embaressed us in front of a crowd...we left never returning again...

Google
This is a great spot to check out a show. The review for me would highly depend on the talent there on a particular night. Overall a decent, intimate spot to check out a show.

Have seen a few memorable shows at The Uptown. Service has always been fine and it's nice that there is a space in the back for smokers so their not all out on the curb.

Went for the weekly free comedy show. The comedians were pretty funny. The bar itself seems nice. Drinks were an average price.

Yelp
I like this club! Good music, good vibes inside and outside. Though last time they ran out of straws so I had to drink my vodka soda from the cup itself and it just was NOT good. I suggest ubering over here if you do live in Oakland just out of safety. Bad bunny night was SOO much fun loved the crowd and loved the old reggaeton music being included as well. Desmadre was OKAY.. it was like EDM x new reggaeton but I don't know it was just not as danceable compared to that bad bunny night. Bring bad bunny night back! Especially because the new album came out.

Yelp
This place makes for a lively destination for hearing some of the Bay Area's finest DJs, as well as performers from all over. They regularly host special events such as "Drake Night", or "R&B Night". I went to both of these events but enjoyed my time at Drake Night more since I know the lyrics to all of his songs. There is a cool upstairs area where you are perched above the dance floor and can look down on the action. Security is thorough, which I appreciate. Always a memorable time here at Crybaby.

Yelp
Fun little bar with an outside area. Young crowd, good music, and good drinks. This place can get a little crowded on the weekends.

Vi T.

Yelp
Saw Yehme2. I'm not sold on the name of the club. Lighting situation is also just so-so. Beyond that, the drinks were pretty well priced and despite being a smaller club, there was ample dancing room. It's too small of a club for popular DJ bookings, but it'd be interesting to visit for unique talent if they continue to book it -- especially since I wouldn't have to cross a bridge to get there (staying in the East Bay given the choice is the way to go).

Yelp
Went on Friday after watching the game in the city. Took Bart from the Mission all the way here -- great location to take public trans. Arrived a little after 10 for Y2K/MySpace music night, line was short & cover was $17. Security + staff were all really friendly which is something I think sets apart different clubs. There was hardly ever a long wait for the bathrooms, however the bigger stall outside did run out of tp at one point so we had to use the paper towels... We got in when Mike Woo was on set & the music was onnnn point from there on!! There were some moments when the music switched to electric/EDM which was confusing but makes sense I guess if you're trying to cater to a full crowd. Overall LOVED the music & vibe that night. It's nice when there's theme/era nights so you know what you're signing up for. We actually wanted to go again the day after bc we had so much fun but weren't so sure about Saturdays theme. I wonder if they get the same/different turnout depending on the night. Ordering drinks wasn't bad. Typical wait time for a crowded club. I've definitely waited longer at other places before. Cover & drink prices felt a little expensive to me. Free before 10:30 would be nice :) Would love to see the interior of the venue improved a bit for the price we pay. I'm sure they can do something cool to improve the back area of the club, maybe seating? Also love the spacious outdoor/smoking area. Really helpful to sober up & get fresh air lol Overall love the life this brings to downtown & i look forward to continuing to support & see how they utilize the venue. P.S. you can buy some bombbb soul food just across the street. Really good ribs + mac & cheese. Support local (:

Yelp
1. Music wasn't great for dancing. 2. Even loud by nightclub standards. Wear ear plugs if you value your ear drums. Especially on the dance floor where the speakers are pointed. 3. Most importantly........charged $25 for a Long Island. That takes some nerve. That's highway robbery. Even clubs in SF or Vegas don't charge that much. That's just trying to swindle your customers. All it does is create bad will. This was probably my 5th time there and definitely my last. Take your business elsewhere. There are other more deserving clubs in Oakland.

Yelp
If a half star or 0 star was an option on here, that's what this place actually gave. For egotistical reasons the bouncer, whom yelp removed the photo of, likes to put his hands on guests when they are clearly not a threat. I don't know what influenced the bouncer but he doesn't need to be putting his hands on people. This dude for whatever reason blatantly put his hands on a guest that never was a threat to anyone. It was a cool evening til he decided he wanted to play HoodSlam (the wrestling event that goes on there sometimes; several photos are on Crybaby's business page) with a guest. Why don't he join one of the hood slam events instead of doing security because security is to secure and de-escalate, not throw hands and escalate.

Jen T.

Yelp
Incredible sound system, lots of open floor space to dance, and a nice outdoor area in the back for some fresh air. The bathrooms are a tiny bit of a tight fit bc there are doors so it's hard for the ladies to line up inside, but it leads to a shared laugh. Not sure if there was coat check, but I didn't see one and ended up leaving my jacket in a pile by the stage. Had an amazing time at the AfroBacchanale party--great vibe, and everyone was having fun. It's super loud by the stage, but reasonable towards the middle of the dance floor. Will definitely be back!

Jessica S.

Yelp
3 stars because it seems that they intentionally hold up the line until after 10pm so that the free tickets they sell online is no longer valid.

Victor V.

Yelp
Sound is amazing, staff is nice and welcoming. This spot really brings so much to downtown Oakland that I didn't think was needed. They got so much different types of events and parties here. There's something for everyone to enjoy. The outside patio is really tight and there's also an upstairs area if it's a particularly crowded night that has a bar. I'll be visiting more often for sure. Very happy this place is here.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
saw some great shows in 2022! sound system is still the most top tier in the east bay. highly recommend checking this place out. i've had the privilege of having some candid chats with the owners, and it's clear that they care deeply about oakland and the community. support this Black owned, minority business! and, no, they don't intentionally hold the line.

Yelp
I went to this bar by myself last weekend and was jumped in the bathroom by 6 random girls, they then went on to steal my entire purse and phone so I had no way of getting home or calling the police. After being jumped the security finally came into the bathroom and put us all out of the club (under-stably so) but when I was outside trying to explain to the bouncers what was going on and that I felt unsafe. I was jumped again by these same girls right in front of the bouncers and nothing was done. This is when my phone was stolen and I told the bouncers and instead of calling the police, an ambulance or even simply asking them to give me my purse back they shooed me from in front of the establishment where I had to walk around asking random people to use their phone to call the police myself. The bouncers here are absolutely disgusting and this is not a place that is safe for women going out alone!! If anything bad happens they will put you out on the street without alerting police no matter how drunk you are!

Megan C.

Yelp
A really cool space and vibe. I love the area outside in the back - feels like you're at a house party in the best way. A special shout-out to the bartender working a few weekends ago. I wish I knew his name. I no longer drink alcohol and went to the bar asking if they had Heineken 0 (non alcoholic version of Heineken). The bartender said yes but it must have been loud and he couldn't hear me right because he came back with a regular Heineken. I started panicking because while my sobriety is completely self-imposed, I didn't want to drink that night. I decided that I would hand it off to a friend in the group I was with and said "I'm so sorry I asked for the alcohol free version but this is ok!" He immediately pulled the beer back and said "I'm not going to make you drink!". I really appreciated his understanding and compassion. It's hard to be a young person navigating going out and not drinking. He saved me from breaking my resolve and didn't make me feel bad or guilty or stupid. Will be back!

Yelp
Just reading this 'confused and misguided' response by the 'managing partner' has turned me off from coming here. The 1st 2 sentences of your response being condescending and dismissive to a guest's experience at your venue tells me everything I need to know. My friends have suggested this spot a few times and for tonight. It's a no for me. And I will be telling them about this review and encouraging them to visit other venues. Background: 10Yrs+ experience working in REAL venues on the east coast that generated millions every night 5yrs+ experience in music business Wrote millions in partnership promo contracts between big brands, acts and venues MBA in human centered design 10Yrs+ Consulting creating strategy around maximizing customer experience So I'm not talking out of my ass.

Yelp
Awesome new venue in Oakland where the Uptown used to be. A variety of different shows which draws all kinds of different crowds of people. I've seen a hardcore show, reggaetón party, rappers and DJs, and even wrestling match here. As someone who was born and raised in Oakland, I am very happy to see a new space that respects and values Oakland/Bay Area culture. The security and staff are very friendly and professional. Solid drinks and friendly bartenders. I genuinely appreciate the bathroom layout- having more options for women and gender neutral people so that you are not waiting in line for a seriously long time. The outdoor section in the back has INCREDIBLE mural and it's a great space to get fresh air or smoke if you want to. The lighting and sound are also great. Parking is a little difficult because you are in the heart of Uptown Oakland where there is hella bars, clubs, restaurants, and the Fox/Paramount theaters so just PLAN AHEAD AND GET AN UBER. Not a big deal.

Monika F.

Yelp
Best new venue in downtown Oakland! The water station has paper cones for cups (can double as a party hat)! Incredible sound system! Wood floors! The date-night special is a stupid-good deal. Such good chill kind vibes. Rad lights! Solid margarita! No Bulleit bourbon?? Went here for a bass music show and the bass was BANGING, my feet got a nice bass-massage through the wood floors... and yet the volume wasn't so high that my ears hurt. I'm not even sure how that's possible, but it felt like they really care about the health and well-being of everyone while still throwing an absolutely killer party. Definitely can't wait to go back!!

Kendall H.

Yelp
Music wasn't great $15 for nasty drinks served by rude bartenders Bathrooms were filthy! $15 ticket fee.. WHY

Aby S.

Yelp
Making this review based on service: Crybaby need to check their staffing. One of their bartenders is up charging their customers and giving of the worst vibes. A young woman with short hair clearly upcharged us for two margaritas when we had already purchased some earlier from a different bartender. Very ugly attitude, didn't understand why she was reacting to us in such a rude manner. It definitely turned me off of this venue, she was so unwelcoming. Crybaby looks great and all but if your staffing is treating customers that way it does not make me want to go back. Beware of this bartender you might catch them on a bad day

Jenny S.

Yelp
Great venue - took the best of The Uptown Nightclub that was in this space and revamped/improved. Knocked out walls, added great sound system, art, lights. Two bars - main floor (big) and mezzanine (small), back patio. Tons of room to dance, easy to see the stage/DJs, friendly and diverse crowd. Great programming. Welcoming atmosphere. Excellent staff. LOVE CRYBABY!

Francisco C.

Yelp
Don't come here. It takes 40 minutes to get a drink. The female bartender with the short hair was very rude and overcharged us for the same thing we got from another bartender earlier that night. The music was okay and the DJ talked so much during his set. $15 to be bored and sober since drinks take so long.

Cat P.

Yelp
Cute venue but the bartender Natalie A. charged me $64 for 3 tequila shots (so about $22 per shot) and then when my friend ordered 1 tequila shot from her he was only charged $12.

Jayden L.

Yelp
I was just outside the club. Some man was trying to touch me and then my friend said get off her and the weird man started to touch him. I went up to Frank, the head of security. I told him "watch out for that guy. He tried to touch me." And Frank said, "mam, you're outside of the club. It's fair game." Honestly, the lack of care of humans, specifically women, is disgusting. I wouldn't trust this head of security with my life. Do not recommend this club. Absolutely horrible!!! I'm absolutely disgusted and horrified with this service.

Rafael M.

Yelp
Great venue for a great night out, Great music , good service, beautiful people. Excellent place for a night out.

marco v.

Yelp
This is officially my fav spot in Oakland. Amazing sound and show calendar, plus this perfect little outdoor spot with art-- for when you want to take a breath or a smoke or whatever.

Kevin A.

Yelp
Love coming to this venue! Staff is always friendly and shows are always a fun mix of different genres

Andre G.

Yelp
Music venue for music lovers by music lovers PERIOD!!! Always crackin dam near every night of the week. Don't kno what to do? Slide to crybaby

Layla M.

Yelp
BEST VENUE IN OAKLAND always lots of fun. The staff is very dedicated and the events are on point highly recommended

Matt M.

Yelp
Great new spot added to the Oakland scene. Even with a capacity crowd for Hoodlsam (with a giant wrestling ring in the middle of the room), I could get drinks easily and fast (plus affordable considering it is at a venue + Bay Area), get outside for a breather, use the restrooms without a wait, etc. Will definitely return when an act I like comes through.

Norma R.

Yelp
Beautiful venue. Great music. Security can do better about preventing men from going into the women's bathroom and exposing themselves. I was verbally harassed by a man with his weenie out in the woman's bathroom when I told him to please exit he began to insult me and say "y'all do it all the time." I know I don't. I let security know and they did nothing. All good. I won't be back. I don't feel safe. But they for sure don't let you out without paying to come back in lol.

London S.

Yelp
I really like this place, it's got a really cool vibe and especially for a venue with a bar. Normally I find bar venues to be sort of lame and shitty. Not this one. Everything blends together really well. It's the model for bar venues everywhere.

Romeo P.

Yelp
Had to wait for BART for 40 minutes because they would not let me back in for even 1 minute to get my keys. They literally saw me leave and said I could not come back in and get it. Bouncer is an asshole and rude. I literally begged him and showed him my stamp.

Aria L.

Yelp
Sometimes this bar has a shop set up selling vintage! Very fun especially with the live DJ.

Sam C.

Yelp
When I lost my wallet here for a brief 10 minutes, the bar staff who it was turned in to literally took all of the 30$ cash I had inside my wallet and tried to play it off as if I was tripping after it was returned and got all sleazy when I questioned why my wallet was rifled through and rearranged. That's real weird and they knew it too. If I can't trust the staff I can't trust the venue.

Esmeralda R.

Yelp
BEST VIBE ALL AROUND ! Even the people and the music are great . I go to pura in SF all the time but this place change me ! You would think "oh it Oakland scary" NOPE SF is scary! 10/10 ! No cap this is the place !

Katt A.

Yelp
I went to the Matrix Rave and was not impressed. The sounds system was not at all tuned well for the space. Music was way too loud and not in a good way. Super tinny and reverb. The visuals were boring and repetitive and the djs were pretty meh. Plus, the online ticketing said "free if your rsvp before 10pm" which I did, and then was still changed at the door. If what you really mean is "free entry before 10" then just write that.

Gavri L.

Yelp
Crybaby was a pretty standard and up to date club. I went to see one of my favorite indie artists perform. Maybe it's because I'm not really into nightlife or used to it that two things slightly bothered me. First, I received a very extensive pay down by security before entering, where they touched all my arms, sides, back, legs, and rib cage. My two female friends I went with said that security didn't do that to them on their way in. Second, I got my friend a soda after ordering our drinks and leaving a fair tip. The bartender charged me 5$ for a soda which correct me if I'm wrong, but seemed a little steep, and more like they were taking advantage of the fact that I'm polite and had a 5$ bill ready. Then later the bartender had the nerve to tell me I "forgot to tip" when I was getting another drink for my friend. Overall the club was aesthetically pleasing and a seemed to be put together, but I wasn't impressed with the experience I had as a customer overall. Perhaps I'm just not a club person.
