Meet the Boston Couple Behind Shaw’s Hot New Wine Shop | Eater DC

"Operating since 2010, this Boston-born wine shop has grown into one of America’s biggest Black-owned wine retailers and is opening its first location outside Boston on January 25 in Shaw, selling 800 bottles from 25 countries under one roof. The couple behind it aim to demystify wine for everyday buyers, using TJ’s signature progressive scale that groups wines by body on a 1-to-10 scale (a 1 might be a Basque Txakoli, a Sancerre groups around a 3, chardonnays begin entering the scale at about a 5, and a 10 would be a big California chardonnay like a Rombauer). The shop deliberately carves out shelf space for BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and women winemakers who are often underrepresented, and its wildly successful South End location was named one of 2023’s best wine shops in the U.S. by Wine Enthusiast and currently generates nearly $7 million in annual revenue. The new 4,300-square-foot D.C. store—nearly double the size of the Boston original—includes a private events room, will serve as the brand’s main distribution hub to enable nationwide shipping, and opens with a long weekend of tastings featuring free pours from several producers." - Lulu Chang

One of the Country’s Best Wine Shops Is Coming to Shaw | Eater DC

"Named one of 2023’s best wine shops in the U.S. by Wine Enthusiast, this decade-old Black-owned business from husband-wife duo TJ and Hadley Douglas will open its first location outside of Boston in early 2024 at 1301 9th Street NW in Shaw, diagonal from All-Purpose. The D.C. move allows the shop to ship nationwide for the first time and will function as its main distribution hub to support an aggressive goal of becoming the biggest Black-owned wine retailer in the U.S. It will bring its unique wine-buying model—categorizing by body rather than varietal or region under a proprietary progressive scale—to a nearly doubled 4,300-square-foot space that includes a private events room; the Boston home base features a wall of 800 wines from 25 countries plus beer, sake, spirits, and canned cocktails and generates annual revenue approaching $7 million. The expansion is supported by a recently closed financing round from Cambridge Savings Bank, including a $2 million SBA loan. Rooted in an ethos of hospitality and diversity, the Urban Grape has partnered with Boston University to award wine certification courses to people of color and provides mentorship and internship opportunities, with plans to grow nationally, engage HBCUs, and build a career pipeline to radically diversify the wine industry—moves the team says make sense in historically Black Shaw near Howard University, which has a strong, engaged neighborhood." - Tierney Plumb

What a great wine and liquor store! Near Blagden Alley, the wine and liquor pour into two rooms with a back room for tastings and more. If it's your first time, friendly staff guide you through their store. The wine room organizes the bottles by boldness. Also, the lower to the ground the wine, the more affordable it is. Go high and pay more. Liquor of all kinds fill another room and the prices aren't bad at all. We picked up an amaro $10 cheaper than where we usually get it at. They also have free wine tastings twice a week!

I went to The Urban Grape as I happened to be in the area, had heard great things and of course was on the lookout for some great wine and liquor to add to my collection! So glad to have experienced their unique style/method of displaying wine selections. With a huge variety of wines from different parts of the world - their options and service were all spectacular. As its Black History Month, I wanted a wine and a liquor to celebrate the month; and there were a lot of options to choose from. I bought a South African gin, wine from France & also bought a bottle rum for my husband for Valentine’s Day - which I’m sure he won’t be able to find elsewhere. I was sampled some of the gins that they have on offer before purchasing, and they chilled and opened one of the bottles of wines I bought… Which was a unique option/service that was appreciated. Looking forward to visiting again for their wine tastings, and learning more about “shopping progressively”!

Google
Amazing selection of liquor and wine. I went to such a good education class here on Sake. Would have been nice if they offered small bites to purchase during the tasting however they did provide pizza. I learned a lot and I had a good time, something different to do!

I was really excited to attend the opening night celebration for the Urban Grape DC. The Urban Grape is a well known Black owned wine shop in Boston that brought it's very unique method of wine-buying model to DC!! The Urban Grape focuses on BIPOC produced beverages found both in the store and online. It was so amazing to see so many powerhouses in the same space. The Urban Grape not only has a wine wall that categorizes wine by body as opposed to varietal and/or region, but there are also plenty of spirits available for purchase. The staff present for the opening celebration were kind, knowledgeable and so helpful! Looking forward to having this new staple in DC. I absolutely loved the space! Congratulations on your opening!

Google
A beautifully set up shop with a great selection of wine and spirits that are high quality and at a fair price. The staff is very friendly and inviting and their wine knowledge is top notch. Be sure to check out their free public tastings every Thursday evening and Saturday afternoons.

Quant little spot on the corner to catch a quick sip of spirits and libations. My bestie and I attended their free wine tasting this pass weekend. It can get a little tight once the people pile in so get there early, get a taste, make a purchase and move on if tight and crowded is not your thang. Otherwise I say go for it and grab a few and network away!

Great place! The staff is attentive, courteous and extremely knowledgeable. They offer free wine tastings weekly which I think is a great way to engage and educate the community about wine. I am a loyal customer :)

Some of my gfs and I came for a tasting of the South African wines. There were 10 different winery offerings. The Urban Grape isn't a huge place, however, the tasting tables were arranged in such a manner to allow free movement despite how vast the attendees were. Speaking of attendees, there were so many from varying walks. We met a couple that were attending as they were preparing to travel to South Africa in a few months and wanted to know which wineries they should visit. As this was our first time at The Urban Grape, it was nice to see all the diverse wines and spirits available. It's rare to visit a small wine and spirits location with so much diversity. The best way to end the tasting was meeting one of the owners, TJ Douglas. He was very personable and engaging. How cool to have the actual owner there greeting and meeting many of the attendees. As we are black women who play golf, it was even cooler to hear about his black golf association in Boston. Yes, that's just how engaging and personable he was. If the tasting and diversity of offerings wasn't enough to make us want to come back and support, meeting such a friendly owner was the icing.

Yelp
I came here for a tasting in a rainy Saturday and the place was packed. Upon entry, my party was greeted by Nick who kindly looked up our reservation and encouraged us to use the coat rack. The tastings were soooo yummy and the team was very knowledgeable. Michelle did a fantastic job describing each of the wines we sampled. Also, the playlist was *chefs kiss* and the restrooms were very clean. The also have an area in the back where you can drink the wine your purchased. Urban Grapes is perfect for a date, time with friends, or a solo adventure. This is the perfect place to purchase wine and select liquors...RUN to support this amazing business

Yelp
Urban Grape is an absolute gem in the heart of DC, conveniently located near the convention center. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with top-notch customer service. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about their craft, always ready to help you find the perfect bottle or introduce you to something new. One of the standout features of Urban Grape is their free events, especially the tastings! They host wine and whiskey tastings throughout the week, which are not only fun but also educational. Fellas...pay attention...this could be a date night option for sure. The space itself is warm and inviting, making it easy to feel at home while exploring their impressive selection. They even have a back area for drinking and uncorking with friends. Urban Grape has truly mastered the art of combining great products, stellar service, and a welcoming atmosphere. I can't recommend it enough definitely stop

Yelp
Thought I'd give this place another try a year later. I stopped by on Saturday afternoon and the door was locked. There is a sign that says it is apparently now "locked at all times", and to "ring the doorbell and have your valid photo ID ready". Like a pawn store or sex shop lol. I rang the bell, waited briefly, nothing happened, so I left. There was also no door knob on the front door (?), and their front window has featured a large picture of an apparent shoplifter for several months. I get that the store needs security but the way they've gone about it is just a weird vibe.

Yelp
I went soley for the wine tasting event for Kumusha, Aslina, and HER. I felt welcomed immediately I walked into the event, and that was much appreciated! The process of sampling the wines was a bit rougher than I hoped though. It was definitely hectic to navigate and get the attention of the employees who were explaining and pouring the wines. However, props to them for such an initiative and being very knowledgeable about the wines. I will definitely recommend this place to all wine lovers!

Yelp
I attended the Urban Grape DC wine tasting event for Aslina and Kumusha. It was quite an amazing experience. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner (TJ) who was an inspiration; Patrick was very helpful in helping me pick out some new wines and educating me on the progressiveness of the wines. Moreover, every staff member that I interacted with was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. The space is beautiful and they also have a private room in the back to host events. I look forward to returning and the Urban Grape being my regular wine shop. The Urban Grape is really more than a wine store; it is an experience rooted in promoting diversity and education.

Yelp
The staff here are a bit weird. I cannot define the term exactly because while I was treated ok my friend was not. We came here for the wine tasting. While (5) five of us showed ID and one did not have a physical copy of her ID but she did have it on her phone. They did not accept it. Ok. Fine. However, 2 seconds later another couple comes in and they do not ID them at all and allow them to taste the wine. I go up to the associate and say hey did you ID them? She just looks blankly like "ohhh" she eventually asks for ID but I am unsettled. If I didn't ask she would have allowed them to drink. I do not recommend this business.
