The 15 Best Restaurants near Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama | Eater

"Opened in 2022, the Veganish Market transports a slice of beach vacation to downtown Tuscaloosa. The place is owned and operated by Yazmyn Rozier, who drew inspiration from her yearly vacations to Miami to bring a “fun, community-driven cafe” to T-Town. The restaurant offers both vegan and non-vegan grab-and-go options such as smoothies, grain bowls, and sandwiches. The space, while small, does its best to offer a tropical escape, with palm leaf wallpaper and pastel colors throughout." - Jen Bowman

My mom and I stopped by Coastal Cowgirl Cafe and absolutely loved it! We both got delicious smoothies. Fresh, flavorful, and perfectly made. The ambiance of the cafe is so warm and inviting, with a fun coastal vibe that makes you want to stay and relax. We had a great experience and will definitely be back!

Where do I even begin?!! I absolutely adore this place. The aesthetic is so chill and chic! The food is delicious, but I came here to rave about the smoothies! Oh my goodness I tried “Vibe” smoothie for the first time last week and let me tell you I have had many smoothies in my life BUT THIS SMOOTHIE was an experience for my taste buds! Flavorful, scrumptious goodness in a cup! You must try it for yourself- you will not be disappointed by this menu and great customer service with positive attitudes ✨✨

Decided to stop by for the first time and the service was amazing. The owner and her employees were so nice and easily handled my questions about modifications. I got the strawberry shortcake smoothie and it was a 10/10. I would totally recommended stopping by if you downtown!

Such a cute place! Have been 2 times in the last week or so- had the avocado toast and the burger. Both were delicious! Their coffee is amazing too. Super sweet employees and adorable building.

My new favorite lunch spot in Ttown with the freshest ingredients and fun atmosphere! The owner was very kind and helpful with suggesting menu items. I got the sweet potato tacos and smoothie- and they were both delicious. Also a plus- there is plenty of parking in front of the restaurant unlike other restaurants/shops in the area. Can’t wait to come back!

Yelp
Oh my gosh as a graduate of the University of Alabama this will certainly be one of the places I miss the most. Every single item I have tried here has been wonderful. The people who work there are all wonderful. And the inside is decorated so cute and fun with a mix of beachy and western decor. I love coming here, unfortuantely I discovered Veganish the day after I graudated! But I did return 3 times within the next week if that tells you anything! The street corn dip and Vibe smoothie are by far my two favorites but the sweet potato tacos were a close favorite. I also love the matcha mango smoothie and the passionfruit smoothie. GO HERE!!! This place rocks! I will be back every time I am in Tuscaloosa from now on.

Yelp
What a wonderful new-ish addition to downtown tuscaloosa. The title is definitely fitting because it's flexible for vegans and nonvegans, so never fear. You order by scanning the QR code on the tables and the food comes in recyclable containers which is great. I loved the elote and the BALT sandwich. The tomato was so nice and thick and the multigrain bread really held up to the avocado and tomato. The fiesta bowl was brought to a new high with the sour cream that come with it. For real, try that sour cream. We also got to sample the strawberry coconut smoothie which was delicious and not too sweet which is what I prefer. The owner, Yasmin, is friendly, warm, and really values each customer. I will definitely be back to try some other items. Yum!

Yelp
The premise, I like. They're saying they want to offer food that's relatively focused on plants, but isn't 100% vegan, which is probably wise, especially in Alabama. In practice, it seemed like they put more resources into their chic interior design than into their food, with most of the items that were actually vegan being based on grocery store greens and Beyond Meat. My salad had a variety of beans and salsa with some crushed corn chips; it was fine but nothing special. I got a lacroix on the side because I didn't want the extra calories of a fruity beverage or their vegan ice cream. Others were stopping in after running a race, but I unfortunately wasn't impressed, merely glad that at least someone was making an effort to provide a non-barbecue restaurant in this town.

Yelp
First, this is a genuinely wonderful new restaurant in the Tuscaloosa area. If you're looking for a new place to try, whether or not you're Vegan, this is a great choice. We came in on their soft opening last week. First big positive is that all table numbers have a QR code you can scan and order directly from your phone. Then they'll bring everything out to your table. Really neat and tidy as an ordering system, and wonderfully fast and convenient. Food was really on point, and very generous portion sizes. My partner and I shared the "Beyond Beef" sliders and street corn dip. The sliders were nearly the size of a regular burger, in my humble opinion, and deliciously prepared. From the QR menu function you can order any number of toppings, including a homemade aioli (which I highly recommend) and pickled red onions. It was so much food we had to bring some of the corn dip home (and it became a wonderful side dish to dinner). The owner came out and checked on us, told us a bit about the story of the shop and their own path to vegan(ish) food. It was a meaningful and poignant conversation, and we felt appreciated and welcomed as if we were part of the family. We also enjoyed each item, and made that fundamental point emphatically. David Chang once said that if you want to support local restaurants, you should have 3-5 you get to know, explore the menu on, and patron regularly. And whichever the last is on that list, you should switch it out in favor of trying at least one new place now and then. If you're looking to add your new place this week, might I recommend the Veganish Market? Good food made by even better people. Perhaps it will even become one of your 3-5 go-to places in Tuscaloosa? Wouldn't that be something?

Yelp
We were in Tuscaloosa for a couple of days and were trying to find some vegetarian options for lunch. Gave Veganish Market a try and it was absolutely delicious. I had the Burger Sliders with Beyond Beef patties on fresh, soft buns. There are several toppings offered and you can choose up to four. I had spring mix, pickles onions, veganaise and grilled mushrooms. Best burgers I've had in a long time and very filling. My husband had the salmon burgers with the topping choices. Salmon was freshly grilled and topped with coleslaw and pickled onions. He said they were delicious and he was very impressed with them. Very cute cafe. Clean, fresh and decorated with a cool vibe and the server was friendly and knowledgeable. We got samples of a smoothie and it was so delicious. I would have loved one but was quite full from the burgers.

Yelp
Thus place is SUPER cute! I love the decorations my friend and I got the burrito bowl and the corn dip. The burrito bowl was okay. A little dry not much flavor in my opinion. But the corn dip was fantastic. so whenever your ready to order you can order from the host or do it online. We couldn't order from the website that the girl gave us the link to. It didn't work for either of us. The bathroom was very clean and decorated very cute like the rest of the store. I do wish that there were more vegan options. BUT I guess that's why it is called Vegan"ish"! Give it a try! Support your local businesses!!

Yelp
I walked in at 6:30 to get a smoothie and they said they were closing early "because they weren't busy" which doesn't make sense. I also got there an hour after they were supposed to have opened a couple of weeks ago and nobody was there. I cannot comment about the food because I cannot seem to get it. In my previous service industry job we always stayed open the entire time no matter if there were customers or not. Very unprofessional in my opinion.

Yelp
This is an excellent place for a quick, easy, and delicious meal! They have outdoor and indoor dining, and everything on the menu is delicious. My carnivorous parents even loved it! I live around the corner and eat here regularly. I especially love the salmon bowl, I add a side of mojo sauce to give it a little pizzazz. The smoothies and frozen drinks are also amazing.

Yelp
Healthy, tasty, FAST, independent, and relatively affordable. It can be a challenge finding a place that checks all of those boxes in a city the size of Tuscaloosa. Many of the sit-down restaurants downtown can't guarantee that you'll be out of there in less than an hour - not their fault given how hard it is to staff these days, but makes them ineligible for a workday lunch. Veganish offers fast food that's MUCH better than a fast-food joint. You can grab it to go or sit at one of the tables inside or outside on a beautiful stretch of University Ave. I had the salmon with mango and pickled onions on a bed of rice and my wife had two bean burger sliders that had a little spicy kick to them. Both were listed as small plates but we found them to be enough for a lunch. Looking forward to exploring the rest of the menu!

Yelp
This is the perfect restaurant for those who aren't quite all the way vegan/vegetarian as they offer some meat and animal products. The food was delicious, I got the burrito bowl with cilantro lime rice. The serving size was perfect, and there was a good toppings to rice ratio (not overloaded on the rice). My husband got the beyond burger sliders and couldn't tell the difference between a that and a beef burger. I will be back and I can't wait to see how they grow!! Tuscaloosa needs more restaurants like this that offer healthy, tasty food.

Yelp
I've had the pleasure of dining in this establishment and I must say I'm not a vegan by no stretch of the imagination but I'll tell you this Y'all better get over there I'm telling you especially my fellow carnivores, they know what their doing as well as what they got going it's a Great establishment for dining, the food their service an staff your time, and overall experience is well worth it it's a very hip an quaint a e I can't wait to try their whole Menu as well so if your looking for a Great place go to one of the best places like Veganish Market in downtown Tuscaloosa across from City Hall on Univercity Blvd you certainly be satisfied you and whomever comes with you

Yelp
Enjoyed the street corn dip-- will definitely get it again. The sweet potato tacos were delicious. I'm not a huge fan of the QR code ordering, but it worked fine. Vegan ish is a great choice for people with dietary restrictions or just want fresh-tasting food. Great addition to downtown.

Yelp
service was amazing, BUT the buffalo cauliflower wings are literally just cooked cauliflower with seasoning salt on it, very misleading
