Last weekend My husband, two sons, and I took my sister-in-law and three of our nieces to the Baked Bear at Pacific Highlands Ranch while they were in California visiting. My youngest son (3 years old) had brought his lovie, this little penguin that I bought him when he was itty bitty. He named it Peso, and has loved it more than most of his other toys. After we finished our ice cream my husband was playing around with the boys, throwing Peso up in the air. One of those times he accidentally threw it higher than he meant to, and Peso landed on the roof of the Baked Bear. Uh oh! My little guy was so sad, but it was late- past bed time- and we couldn't find anyone to help us. We took the boys home and my husband went back with a flashlight and a rope, hoping to knock Peso free. He didn't have any luck. My husband promised our son a "new Peso." He seemed okay with it, but the more days that went by, the more he asked for "the real Peso" back. I went by the Pacific Highlands Ranch shopping center today to buy something and my little guy looked up and said, "Mommy! There is Peso!" Sure enough, there he was, still on the roof of the Baked Bear. He started to cry, asking for him back. I looked around and didn't immediately see anyone to help us, so I popped into a store called Mabel's and asked the incredibly sweet saleswoman for help. Her name is Julie. She put me in touch with one of the owners of the complex, named Derrick. Derrick came and was so kind. He told me that he had 3 kids of his own, and understood the importance of a lovie. He told me to give him a little while to locate a ladder that was tall enough, and he would see what he could do. I gave him my phone number and he called me a few hours later. He got Peso down! He left Peso with Julie at Mabel's for safe keeping, and we swung by a little later to get him. Our son is THRILLED to have Peso back. Julie even wrote a note to my son from Peso, telling him how much he missed him, and was so glad to be going home with him. Seriously, just the sweetest people! If you are ever in the area, stop into Mabel's and give them some business. She went over and above to help us, and she has some really adorable clothes for sale too!
