The Village Bakery

The Village Bakery was the answer to my every need this weekend! In creating a cake for my dad’s 90th birthday, I needed it to be soy free, which no other baker would accommodate, even with weeks’ notice. Richard, TVB owner, makes everything from scratch and has no soy in his products. He was able to leave out nuts from a carrot cake, the carrots were clearly fresh vegetables and in full evidence in each bite. The cake was unbelievably moist and perfectly spiced, with robust notes of cinnamon and a little clove. But beyond all these most important issues, Richard was able to pull off an all-edible design using a 3D printer, ganache and his own ingenuity and creativity. I asked him to create a law dictionary and add a school logo, as well a birthday greetings, all with 3 days’ notice (I had given up for a while and found him with little time remaining). Everyone, especially my dad, was enchanted by his work! I cannot recommend The Village Bakery and its owner Richard highly enough. If you have a special occasion (or even an everyday baked good need), call on him. His prices are very reasonable and his products are best in class.

I would highly recommend this place! I ordered a cake for my baby shower from this bakery and they executed the vision that I had for my cake very well. The cake was beautiful! The order for the cake was kind of placed at the last minute but they still got it done in a timely manner before my event started. We got so many compliments on the cake not just on the looks but the taste as well. They did a wonderful job and again would recommend. I definitely will be a returning customer.

Cake is pretty But not at all what I wanted granted it was short notice I wanted a With a celebrity photo on it They did deliver a cake with a correct celebrity photo but not the correct Picture When I asked the owner if I can get a discount being that my decorations were all revolved around the photo that I wanted to provide, he said I never got the email. I asked if he called me to let me know that he said no I did not have enough time very rudely. When I asked for a discount, he said absolutely not if you want I can charge you an extra $15 And redo it right now But I’m running late and he was extremely rude, so I honestly did not want to pay him any more money than what I already paid So the cake is nice, but the owner is extremely rude

The Village Bakery made the cake for the baby shower that i hosted for my best friend. They created the most beautiful cake!!! It was delicious as well. They were a pleasure to work with as well. So accommodating and helpful. I highly recommend this bakery.

Cannot say enough good things about this place! We ordered a cake over the phone for my son's 7th birthday, requesting a shark cake that a 7 year old would find cool and scary. We don't live in Houston and we're sure what we would get, but the reviews were encouraging and the guys were great to deal with. They killed it, making a two-tiered cake that looks just like Jaws coming out of the water. They even threw a severed limb in the shark's mouth, along with lots of other great little touches. We were blown away at the artistry of it. Plus, the cake was delicious (great cake and icing flavor options) and was a total hit with the kids. 10 stars would recommend to everyone!

The cake turned out excellent. It was very delicious and the decorations were beautiful. The edible text was sharp and exactly what I had asked for. I was a little disappointed in the piping on the side of the cake, but understand that it is probably very difficult to have flawless handwriting vertically with frosting, so I'm not going to fault them for it. The flowers on the top were phenomenally detailed and lifelike, especially for just being buttercream frosting. The cake was moist and very delicious. The shop itself is very unassuming, but the employees are super friendly and helpful and creative. The price is not cheap (though, in fairness, I don't buy a lot of custom cakes, so maybe it was in line with other custom cakes), but the quality received definitely fit the price. Thanks Village Bakery for an excellent experience.

I’ve used their services twice so far. And have been pleased. First was a cake for my daughters third birthday. The second for the arrival of our second daughter. We got mini cup cakes made. The cake and cupcakes tasted wonderful and were made fresh. The decorations were amazing! Will be ordering a custom birthday cake again this year. Would highly recommend them.

I can only comment on walk up holiday-related service at The Village Bakery, but my experience there was great. Having called ahead regarding Hamantaschen for a Purim celebration, I was delighted to find out the bakery had several flavors. I picked apricot and raspberry flavored Hamantaschen (not pictured). Both were delicious! Other cookies featured in the display case included St. Patrick's Day four-leaf clover cookies and post-Mardi Gras purple, green and yellow fleur de lis cookies. I enjoyed looking at the various baked goods, and the person who answered the phone was very professional, helpful and friendly.

Let's be honest, they are known for their ridiculously amazing and life-like cakes. Seriously! Have you browsed their photos. They are INSANE! Probably why I had Richard make my little one's one year old birthday cake and smash cake. He is a genius and he has been at it for decades. He also makes personalized cookies, cupcakes and more. We were so happy to discover this app, Too Good To Go, a few days ago and to know it can help save food than let it go to waste. Today was our second experience with this app and The Village Bakery was beyond disappointing. We were shocked to received a two days old bread (the young cashier boy accidentally told me). This loaf of bread was tossed to a side table by the trash can area . "Is this it?" I asked to confirm and he said yes all I will received is two days old bread. The app shows it should be $12 worth of food but I only received a loaf of two day old stale bread? This is a dishonest business that use this app to sell their trash. I am asking for refund. This business should not be in this app if they can not honor their words to not truly waste food at the end of the day but gave away days old inedible trash. This is not right. ​

Ordering from this bakery was so easy and great. They made exactly what I wanted. The cake was so moist and delicious. I'm so happy with the result and final product. I highly recommend this place!

My red velvet cake had sooo many good cheerful comments! Delicious cake, it was enormous! I wish the icing was cream cheese icing but oh well! Decors was very nice educational theme. Thank you village bakery for making my retirement event so successful.

Caution - check your cake before you pick it up. I asked them to duplicate a cake they made and I received something completely different for my wife's 40th Birthday. The birthday girl was disappointed b/c she designed the cake that was supposed to have been copied. We were able to make the best of it. The business admitted their fault and offered a small store credit.

We are new to Houston and were looking for a new go to bakery for family birthdays. Someone recommended Village Bakery and we gave it a shot. This was probably the best birthday cake I've had ever. The inside was so soft, the checkerboard was a lovely touch, and the raspberry filling and chocolate buttercream were a great combo. We know where we'll be going from now on!

WOW! Just WOW My boyfriend ordered a cake from here with simple instructions of a white cake saying congratulations on matching Dr. Jimenez! We expected something very simple and didn't have high expectations, but woah! I'll let the cake do the talking. They took the word doctor and ran with it and I couldn't be happier! Look at the attention to detail in the pill bottle and the prescription with my "signature" on it!! I almost cried when he showed it to me! Thank you thank you! This was the cake of our dreams. I'm thinking of more excuses to come back for another cake!!

My daughter loved her cake. They understood what I wanted and they killed it. It was ready on time too. I'll definitely be back for next year birthday cake.

Ok. Sent a pic and placed an order a few weeks before an event via telephone. Paid half. Went to pickup and the order looked nothing like the pictures I sent. This would have been ok had they at least listened to my request not to create a loud cake. Wanted subtle and softer colors. Specified NOT ORANGE given that I knew this would be the urge for a fall cake. Got an orange cake. A very large orange cake. They were supposed to make it ombré but softer than the pic sent. There was no gradient. Just orange. Deep deep orange lol. They tried to fix it, but it was obviously rushed. There were holes in the frosting. The edges were frayed. It was still orange. Proportions off. I was reasonable. I waited for thirty minutes hoping they'd fix it. They did their best I guess. I asked for a nominal discount given that I was paying a good amount (~$250) for a cake and cupcakes that completely didn't match anything I requested. The event was the same day. The owner was initially rude and told me it was a "perfectly good cake" and I could "just leave it and go elsewhere." I quickly corrected this ridiculousness. Asked him to pull up the pictures I emailed (a normal part of their process). Once he realized the mistake he softened which I appreciated but wish had come much sooner in the process. Of note , whenI entered and said good morning, no one responded. It took a few minutes to be greeted. They originally told me my cake wasn't ready. They didn't really pay attention to my name. I had to ask again a few minutes later for them to confirm. It was ready, just looked a mess. Not sure why they didn't look at the pics before? And very evident that they never even attempted to look at them when creating the cake. Why request that customers send pics. In the end he offered me a credit for a few dollars and took the 10% off that I asked for (which he initially refused), but I won't be back. Too much work for what should have been simple. Kind service and delicious cake I'm already ordering from here again. Definitely worth the money.

I ordered four pies for Thanksgiving, apple, pecan, chocolate and coconut cream. When I picked them up I purchased additional assorted bars and cookies. I cannot tell you how impressed I am with this bakery. The apple pie was one of the best I have ever had, nothing was left of the pecan and coconut pie either. The chocolate pie was good, but was not the star the apple, pecan and coconut proved to be. The lemon bars were great and the pecan shortbread crescents and the gingerbread men were fabulous. The staff were very friendly and helpful - even during a busy holiday rush. I will DEFINITELY visit again and I have already been told to order our Christmas goodies from Village Bakery. Parking could have been a little better, and the bakery is small, but it is packed full with a mighty assortment of goodies - it is well worth a little inconvenience to pay them a visit.

Unfortunately, I didn't have a good experience with this bakery. I got a phone call 3/16 at 1:14 stating that my cake wouldn't be ready the day of the party until 4 o'clock when I was originally told 3. I said that would be fine, however, I'd have to send someone else to come and pick it up since I would be setting up for a birthday party set to start at 5pm. I asked for $10-20 off the cake (which I thought was reasonable) so I could give the person picking up the cake gas money. The guy that initially called me said he would ask the manager and would give me a call back. After not getting a returned call, I called the bakery at 2:25 and was then told by another baker "sorry but the manager said no". I asked to speak to the manager and he immediately gets on the phone and says "we'll issue you a refund" and hangs up on me. I then called back and told the manager how unprofessional it was to hang up on me. He proceeds to scream in the phone saying how I came into his bakery last minute/the week of wanting a cake and how his other customers order their cake weeks in advance. He continues to scream through the phone not letting me get one word in. After spewing out his frustrations with me, he then says "we'll have your cake ready at 3 and hangs up on me for a second time". Utter disbelief is an understatement. I then stopped what I was doing and arrived to the the bakery to pick up the cake at 3:01 and I hear the manger say "tell her 10 more minutes"... I didn't get the cake until 3:29 and sadly it wasn't presented with an apology, no money off, and no greeting or acknowledgment from the manager. The few bakers that I encountered at the front were all really nice so my displeasure is only towards the manager and has nothing to do with the actual cake. I went to Village Bakery on Wednesday March 13th and asked for a custom cake for Saturday March 16 which the bakery agreed to fulfill my order so if the manager was overwhelmed with orders and/or if it would be too last minute then that should've been conveyed to me. I would've accepted that and tried to find another bakery, simple. However, it was not, my order and deposit was gladly accepted. Don't add more onto your plate and get mad at the customer for wanting you to adhere to the original time provided. I do understand time may have become out of sight while working, therefore, the tardiness could've been offset had the manger met me with grace, calmness, and understanding of my request. Planning surprise parties can be very stressful and this absolutely added more stress and frustration. I paid close to $300 for the cake which included it being ready for Saturday so to be hung up on twice was unprofessional, distasteful, and absolutely absurd. I unfortunately, would never come back or recommend this bakery and I'm sure the owner could care less what I think since customer service was not on his agenda. If it wasnt for this being the day of a surprise party, I wouldn't have called back after being hung up the first time and I certainly wouldn't have accepted the cake. If you want to avoid a headache and unprofessionalism save yourself the trouble and try Bianca's Custom Cakes on Caplin St or Sweetland Cakery on Eldridge Pkwy.

5 stars for their always impressive talent and skill! They are able to take a picture and duplicate it impeccably!! 5 stars for the texture and flavor too! My very first cake from them was a 30th bday cake for my fiancé's surprise party. The cake was beautifully made, but their were some issues in the transit that it got smudged and the delivery time. The owner was very kind and professional about remediating it for me right away, which I really appreciated, so I decided to let them do my engagement party cake as well. They delivered it promptly and in perfect condition, and it was as delicious as it was fabulous! So 5 stars also for their professionalism and eagerness to make it right! I 100% recommend to all family and friends

Ordered cookies 3 weeks ago for my graduation party and sent in the logos that I wanted for the cookies. We go to pick up the cookies today and I was HIGHLY disappointed with how they turned out. I bought cookies from this place a year ago and they turned out pretty good but these weren't even close. It looks like they were put together last night and I don't even want to display these anymore.

This place is worth a visit. The Village Bakery specializes in custom cakes and a wide range of baked goods. I recently dropped in for their (apricot, pineapple and raspberry) hamantaschen and would certainly return for more. Five stars.

The cake tasted very good, especially the chocolate cream between layers. I'm glad the owner suggested me to get only an 8inch one. (Toppings are mine, so it'll be less expensive). Recommend

I drive past this bakery all the time. Today I decided to stop in and see what they have to offer. It's a small area in the front of the shop so there is enough for one guest or couple to enter safely and any others wait outside for covid safety. The young man happily greeted me as I walked in and kindly shared his favorite desserts after I asked him what was good. They explained all the types of bread they make and type of desserts they have. Everything looked well made and nice portion sizes. I ordered one dessert of the hamenstchan but was given two and charged for two. The kids in the front were a little disorganized and didn't know what pastry was which. I understand it maybe a family owned business with the kids running the front but either way the items I purchased were delicious.

UPDATE! May 7, 2020 Richard did it again! Made me and my family our signature cake that was nothing short of delicious and heavenly. The cake was so moist and perfectly made just how I asked. Thank you Richard. You know I'll be back again soon.

Fabulous customer service!!! I live in Louisiana and places an order for a cake to be delivered to my daughter for birthday. Ready on time. Worked with me needing to change delivery address perfectly. Cake was just perfectly decorated and had the details I requested. OMG we got the Italian cream!!!!! Superb taste and moistness. I simply cannot overstate the WONDERFUL, ATTENTIVE, CREATIVENESS of The Village Bakery owners and team members. Just this summer, we have celebrated two pandemic birthdays and a 25th anniversary. The cakes were BEAUTIFUL and DELICIOUS! Thank you, thank you, thank you to this team that focuses on excellence and quality over just making a dollar.

The two stars are for artistry and ability to turn over orders quickly. The cookies looked great. However, the cookies were dry and not tasty at all. Definitely not worth $5 a cookie. Would not recommend or use again for decorative cookies.

Let me just say this: I am thankful to these folks at Village Bakery! I needed a unicorn cake the DAY OF and they came to the rescue. I spent all day calling different bakeries nearby for availabilities on a cake that had a unicorn design on it. Once I called TVB, Richard found a solution to my last-minute issue. Although at first he said it's not enough time to make one since we had 6 hours left for the party. Then later he said, "Well I have a plain, white 8 inch cake that I add a horn and ears to it." Regardless of imaging how it'd turn out, I ordered it. Based off of their reviews, I felt like I was going to be in good hands. Come pickup time, they proved me right! Despite the amazing design they pulled last minute, the vanilla flavored goodness had everyone wanting seconds. Definitely getting more cakes made by them!

I ordered a blueberry and apple pie for Thanksgiving and they were amazing. The friends and family loved it. Highly recommend you try the blueberry one that was my favorite.

We got a cake made for my nephews first birthday from here and they did a fantastic job of replicating the cake picture we showed them. A hole in the wall place but they do a good job making custom cakes. I was really impressed by their work. The cake tasted good and the price was reasonable as well. Definitely recommend this place for custom cakes for special occasions.

I was calling all around town looking for someone who would be open after Christmas to make a cake for me on my birthday. Richard was so helpful he made a cupcake just for me to try the white cake and it was so Moist and amazing. Then for the design I had a under the sea them and I sent him emails of all the cakes designs and he replicated it to perfection. I will most definitely recommend them I was so happy with how everything turned out.

Hate to give this place a bad review as I've ordered and received many cakes in the past without issue or incident. On a recent order for a birthday cake, it wasn't ready when I arrived to pick it up. I had ordered it weeks in advance. Boy, did they give me attitude and blamed me for the issue! Meanwhile, half of the staff in back were sitting on their asses and I was told that they were working on rush orders. Three hours later, the cake was finally ready, but it looked horrible. The worst that I've ever gotten from them. The three hour delay put me in the midst of rush hour traffic. The cake was half melted and had slid to the side of the box by the time I arrived home. Can't say that I'll ever trust this place with an important cake order again. **********Update 8/25/18********** The owner reached out to me threatening to report me to Yelp for a false review and said that I was never a customer. WTFever dude. Adding pictures and a copy of the receipt to prove him wrong and show Yelp that this is a legitimate review.

OMG! You guys knocked my daughters 5th Birthday Wonder Woman cake out the park! I couldn't have asked for a better cake! :) The design was impeccable and taste was top tier! We had half vanilla and half chocolate with cookies and cream filling and it was the best! Not to mention the service was great and staff was sooo friendly! When I walked in, the owner was so welcoming and knew exactly what I wanted . Thank you soooo much to the Village Bakery! You have a new lifetime client for sure, and I'm sure you will be getting more! Everyone loved the cake just as much as we did! :)

These people are the worst. After placing an order over 2 weeks ago and taking my deposit. I even called yesterday to confirm pick up time. They called to tell me the morning that they were running behind and would take 2 more hours! When I called to tell them I was on my way they cancelled it altogether!!! They ruined my 11 year old birthday! Heartless and worthless! Never again!! You might want to get better communicators in your shop because you did not talk to me. Your employee made it very clear that you were not going to meet your obligations. Your track record also proves that this is common practice for your shop.

DON'T ORDER IF YOU'RE GETTING A DELIVERY SERVICE!!! So disappointed that they didn't deliver Birthday cupcakes on my son's Birthday even though I ordered 4 days before. And when my son got them a day later, they were in a poor presentation and very dry condition.

My mother-in-law ordered a cake from here at my suggestion based on the reviews for my husband's surprise birthday. She ordered it way in advance of the minimum requirement to ensure that it would be ready in time considering she was driving from Dallas for the birthday. On the way into town she received a call saying that the cake wouldn't be ready yet until 1:30. She then checked back at 1:30 end it was still not ready! Nearly two hours later she finally got the cake with barely an apology and ended up arriving at the house at the same as my husband, thus the surprise was ruined. I was hesitant to write a negative review given covid, but this is based on customer service. Despite the lack in timely service the cake was impressive although we could tell the coloring was done hastily and thus didn't look exactly like the picture we provided. The flavor was actually really good and the cake was extremely moist although it was mostly fondant which may be typical of customized cakes. All in all good cake, but wouldn't recommend them for time sensitive events.

Called these guys with only a few days notice for a birthday cake, and wow, they absolutely nailed it! Can't recommend them highly enough! I'll be going back for cakes of any occasion!

Richard at the Village Bakery made a masterpiece- a chocolate Hammerhead Shark cake suspended over a chocolate coral reef. It even had tiny starfish and sand dollars! Beautiful. Yummy! Genius! Thank you Richard for making my son's 30th birthday special. We had to cancel the party because of Covid and your cake made the day wonderful anyway. Thank you thank you!

I placed an order last week for a pie to be picked up today at 1:00pm. They called me today at 1:15pm to tell me the pie would not be ready until tomorrow because the ingredients were not available. So frustrated they are telling me now (right at pick-up time) and I have to call and hunt around for a specific pie that was required for my daughter's class. Won't come back here and don't recommend this place for pre-orders... you'll just be showing up empty handed with disappointed guests.

Ordering the cake was easy! However they didn't have my cake ready for the agreed upon time, told me to come back and hour later and still wasn't ready. Party starts in an hour and I'm still waiting for the cake when I should have been at home getting ready! No apologies offered! Next time I think I will just get a cake from the store and avoid the expense and stress! Got home and found a hair on my cake, thankful it wasn't on an edible part. The cake did not look like a unicorn but rather a hippo, this was so sloppy and hurried that I will never return. I got a quick apology as I headed out the door by ways of sorry, we've been busy! Horrible experience!

I needed a quick cake last minute for a birthday and Richard was able to meet my requests. The 7 inch red velvet with cream cheese frosting was delicious and was enough for more than 10 servings (tall slices). He was even able to put my requested logo on top sent to him via email. Make note that Sunday pick up is only from 10-10:30 AM. Rich & his team went above and beyond for me and I will order my future cakes from here!

My first experience with this place was when I ordered a vanilla cake kinda last minute for my husband's birthday. It was one of the most amazing cakes I've tasted. Today tried the small vanilla cake with chocolate filling and brownie. Just yum! Love this little bakery. Gotta add- highly highly recommend their Challah bread.

The Village Bakery created a fabulous cake for my daughter's birthday! When she asked for a Calvin and Hobbes themed birthday, I decided it was time to order a cake. Looking on Pintrist I found some great ideas but many were way beyond my skill set. The people at The Village Bakery put their artistic skills to work to mold and bake this charming cake and it was a hit! Family owned and operated, this local business has stolen my heart! While custom cakes are not cheap, it was surely worth the price to have the hand crafted characters molded to perfection. Thank you Village Bakery for making my daughter's birthday so special!

Beyond impressed not only with the turnout but the professionalism my fiancée expressed of this bakery when ordering this cake. He placed the order from Dallas TX and it turned out fantastic!!! I love it so much! I loved it so much I had such a hard time cutting it and had to get help. The taste was just as good if not even better than the design. It was moist and not too sweet, just right. The cake was really cute but the pea with the babies fell off which I didn't care much because it was heavy and kinda expected. I just simply put it back on top for pictures. I took off 2 stars for flavor :( I specifically told them I care more about flavor than looks. I wanted it to be moist and creamy on the inside. The guy on the phone said "all of our cakes are moist" it wasn't. It wasn't "dry" per say but it wasn't what I expected. My husband said it tasted like Walmart cake. Nothing wrong against Walmart cakes but if I'm paying this much I want something that taste better than it looks. Cute for pictures but that's about it.

I sent Richard and his team a picture of the cookies I wanted and they replicated them exactly. They were a hit at the baby shower! I saw a lot of reviews commenting on phone demeanor and customer service which almost turned me away for this bakery. I would recommend calling with advance notice and be prepared to play a little phone tag. They will get back to you...it might just take a few hours but once we connected he took his time in walking me through pricing and details.

A very easy and pleasant talk with Richard led me to getting a baby shower cake for my friend from Village Bakery. The prices are super reasonable, the cake was delicious (ours was French vanilla with raspberry filling), and the design was cute as a button! I'd give this place a 4.5 only because the design didn't come out EXACTLY the way I had specifically asked, but still beautiful nonetheless. It's most likely impossible to make every single picky patron 100% happy and I understand the service industry is hard enough as it is. I'd also ask for more raspberry filling--the cake seemed a tad too dry for my personal taste, but everyone loved it (including the mother-to-be) and that's all that mattered! I love that they have convenient pick up on Sunday if you need that, which I did in this case. Oh, and their eclairs are pretty darn good!
