Was surprised and delighted to learn that the Village would be getting a new ice cream shop to fill the storefront vacated by Blue Star Donuts. I love good homemade ice cream, like Salt & Straw or Haagen Dazs, and our neighborhood has been sorely lacking in having a place like this. So I've been shivering in antici................pation for this new establishment to open, with a heavy dose of trepidation to see an ice cream place open in winter during a global pandemic. I was pleased to hear that they are partnering with another local establishment, Alpenrose Dairy, to supply their ingredients.
Well, they opened this week and I stopped in to sample their goodies. The staff were super friendly and the store was cute. I got a variety of flavors - tried the pumpkin pie, vanilla, cookie monster, and the mint. I admit that I wasn't blown away with the taste, yet I'm hopeful that it can improve with feedback and trial/error. In general, I felt that all of the flavors lacked a creamy consistency that can be found in more homemade-like ice creams with higher milkfat - they struck me as a bit more icy than creamy, a bit like grocery store ice cream. I thought the cookie monster and the mint had potential, but the vanilla was nothing special and the pumpkin pie tasted flat. However, I have heard that they are going to have a rotating menu of flavors and may even accept neighborhood input on this, which I love. I really hope they take a seasonal approach to flavors and include some more unique ones in the future beyond what you can find in your typical grocery store.
Prices seemed the same as Salt & Straw prices, so maybe a tad high for what you get unless some changes are made.
I also hope they look into getting compostable utensils to contribute to a healthier environment.
I look forward to seeing them continue growing the business and improving their ice cream, which I'd love to come back and try again.
