What a great experience. We went for the tour and tasting on a sat afternoon. The property is off the beaten path and if you blink you'll miss it, but it's picturesque like most wineries are. We were greeted and seated in their back room, and presented with 4 glasses and a charcuterie board (some of the items on the board can be purchased there). Our host was nice, and we got to sample 4 wines (one white, two reds and a dessert/port red). If I'm being honest, the wine was okay...I've come to have low standards for Maryland wine and this was on par. So to recap, nice tour, okay wine, good charcuterie...and none of these are really the reason for the 5 star.
As I was sitting there, a random dude in some regular blue jeans and a pullover walked through the patio door and immediately introduced himself as Tom and shook my hand. It wasn't until he made it two more people down that I realized it wasn't a regular dude, but Tom the owner.
Tom made his way around the table, then stood at the end of the table and started talking. The more he talked the more it became clear that this wasn't some random rant or rehearsed speech, it was a man who allowed himself to become immersed in his passion right in front of us. I won't say what he talked about because it would ruin it for you if you go and get the chance to meet him (here's a hint, ask him how his past brought him to present), but those 11-13 minutes made the outing worth it and then some. Everyone at the table was fascinated by him and inquired if he planned to host Ted talks in the future.
And just as casually as he entered the room, he left. I watched him walk down the road (probably back to his house), just being a regular dude, even though he is anything but.
