The Waterman’s Arms - Review - Barnes - London - The Infatuation

"The Waterman’s Arms does the best Sunday roast we’ve ever had—and yes, we’re including our mum’s in that. The lamb shoulder is the sharing roast to go for here. It’s a feast-like centrepiece of tender, perfectly cooked meat, best eaten between alternating bites of crispy roast potatoes and braised, garlicky greens. This riverside pub sits on a pretty, leafy corner of Barnes, overlooking the river, and inside it’s all wood panelling and happy families ordering black velvets, before the inevitable fight over the last roast potato breaks out. Come evening, curried scallops are split between couples looking for something a little more special than the sausage rolls at their local. But despite the candles and chalkboard menu, big groups sharing bigger pork collars keep things feeling fun and loud rather than serious and sentimental. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Pause Unmute Food Rundown Lamb Shoulder, Mint Sauce This is the kind of meaty Sunday roast centrepiece that’s usually reserved for victorious Viking battles. But it’s not just a showstopper in looks—although that herby, tangy mint sauce has an enticing emerald shine. The meat has a crispy crust but is still soft and juicy. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Roast Potatoes Perfect roast potatoes should have burnished, craggy bits that have slightly caught and gone deep brown and crunchy. But the insides should be soft and smooth. These are all of the above and more—plus they come in a fancy silver dish. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Carrots, Tarragon Mayo We didn’t know that carrots needed a dip before—aside from the odd hummus sidekick—but now we do. These caramelised batons are buttery and sweet, and come with a mint and tarragon mayo that makes them so much more decadent than your average vegetable side. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Sprouting Broccoli, Gorgonzola, Aged Malt Vinegar Like your best mates who you love individually but never saw working as a couple, this dish blindsided us with how well it pairs together. The crunchy tempura broccoli with the vinegar is like a very fancy (healthy) chippy tea. And the buttery, tangy gorgonzola gives every bite a rich, creamy finish. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Toulouse Sausage, Pink Fir, Gribiche Potatoes, meet butter. Sausages, meet wine. We think they’re going to get along just great. This match was always going to be tasty, but the addition of caper-heavy gribiche is a nice foil for all the other fatty ingredients on the plate. This isn’t a ‘wow’ dish, but it is one we want to snuggle up with, preferably under a weighted blanket. PlayMute video credit: Sinéad Cranna Pork Collar, Pig Skin Ragu Put it on a t-shirt—we heart pig skin ragu. It’s a loose sauce but so rich and slightly sweet and meaty. We got mad whenever anyone else swiped their pork through it. The pork is also full of flavour and has a nice balance of fatty, chewy edges and tender meat. It’s one of the best pork dishes we’ve had. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna" - Sinéad Cranna

For some time I’ve wanted to visit the Waterman Arms, so it was lovely to be treated! This is the place if you CAN cook a roast, because it’s incredible. To walk there along the river… perchance to dream of great wine, a warm smiling team and dishes that hit above and beyond a simple tradition. Of course we started with a glass of rose fizz to down a sleek oyster with sweet & sour vinaigrette that felt like a sexy playlist. White ragu with lentils and cavelo Nero was just sublime and not a normal Sunday starter… which we complimented with two others. Black trompettes with lentils and cheese were earthy, rich and fab! Cod’s roe with fritters and shavings of artichoke bounced off the tongue and welcomed an already happy belly. There’s a great fish and steak board, but when you do see the Sunday roast options wandering to other tables, it’s gonna make you think. Pork was also top of mind with Porchetta rings of fat meaty flavour, glistening with dark golden armour in the form of crackling. The sides are also not sides, but like sidekicks, pack a punch on the flavour and texture profile. Roast potatoes were carved like a mattress you’d want to lay on later. Carrots chunky, bold and finely dressed with leek. Seasonal sprouts and spout tops were a fictional warm caesar salad riff that was showing how sprouts can turn up. We devoured, conquered and potentially left some small grains for the gods. Close to exploding and reaching the heavens, we may of had to have a rule of ‘3’ with a totally underrated dark chocolate, sea salt and olive oil sorbet, that seamed to form sweet layers and topped the evening. I’m incredibly lucky to be taken for such an incredible night of Hospitality that makes me want to run that much further along the river every week from my flat. Thanks to the team and my incredible partner for treating me.

Food ✅️✅️✅️✅️✅️ Service ✅️✅️✅️✅️✅️ Views ✅️✅️✅️✅️✅️ This place has been on my list of restaurants to try for a while and I was wary that it would not live up to the hype. It surpassed expectations on all levels. We've tried loads of Sunday lunches in the last 5 years and always come away wanting. This is the best Sunday lunch I've had in UK. The food is innovative, well seasoned and delicious. The staff are knowledgeable. Wine list is very good. Views are lovely as well. Tried the makerel with nduja, and squid with Thai sausage to start, with the bread and butter. Punchy flavours and well seasoned... great start. Porchetta for main with chips and a salad. Pork was perfectly cooked, chips were on point and salad was excellent (leaf salad with herbs in that add so much flavour). Dessert was baked custard and greengage panna cotta... both perfect. Great weather and good wine just added the final touch to make it a perfect lunch.

Really exciting menu in a fantastic location overlooking the Thames. The Merguez sausage with pickled peppers, curried scallops and deep fried peas kicked things off very well. A lemon sole from the blackboard was good, but I regretted not going for one of the steak options with beef lardons, having asked to taste a lardon after ordering. Interesting wine list.

We loved our Sunday lunch at The Waterman’s Arms! The food and service were both excellent, and we were very grateful to be able to bring our own cake with no fuss from the team. We can’t wait to return!

We had the most delicious meal last night. We loved every single dish and we ordered pretty much everything! Our waiter was excellent and really looked after us. He knew the food & cocktail menu inside out which doesn’t happen very often at other restaurants. Great buzz to the place and can’t wait to go back to eat it all over again.

5 stars but I’d give it more if I could. Wonderful cozy ambience with music playing that reminded me of the summers I spent as a child in Brazil. We ordered the gnocchi, seafood rice and curried scallop. All were outstanding. Their take on gnocchi was unlike I’d ever seen before, but bursting with flavor. My wife could have eaten a dozen of the curried scallops they were so exquisite. Well done. I highly recommend.

Tucked away in leafy Barnes, this riparian spot delivers an intimate dining experience that hits. Our family dinner unfolded across a well-curated spectrum—bracing cocktails, fresh oysters, various salads, and tender steaks that touched all the right notes. A favourite was dessert: A baked cream with strawberries, offering a refined and imaginative twist on a beloved English classic. It's the kind of place that lingers in memory—and one I’ll gladly return to.
