Where to Grab a Burrito Around D.C. | Eater DC

"Turn into a Dupont alley and follow the sign of the penguin in a sombrero to access this lunch-only venue owned by the folks from the dearly departed CF Folks. Burritos come with marinated steak or chicken or “fajita style.” For $1.50 more, people can upgrade to an El Gordo burrito that weighs a full pound and comes with enchilada sauce. There are patio seats outside, and customers can also call in orders or use a variety of third-party delivery apps (found here)." - Gabe Hiatt

14 Hidden Gem Restaurants in D.C. - Eater DC

"Follow the steady stream of office workers down a dim, narrow alley and through a nondescript metal door for one of the District’s top burritos. Short on ambience and only open for lunch, Well Dressed Burrito does a ton of business anyway. People wait in long lines for favorites like soft tacos, chicken and cheese enchiladas, or generous burritos and burrito bowls." - Lisa Ruland

Google
I visited the Well Dressed Burrito when I was in Washington DC for work, and found this amazing place located down a side alley. Everyone I have encountered there was friendly and polite with great recommendations. I ended up visiting several days in a row for their weekly specials and "DC Favorites" as it's listed, and I can say honestly, everything there was amazing and priced below what they should be charging. And if you have room after your mains, the Mexican bread pudding helps finish off your meal. All in all, as you can tell, I highly recommend The Well Dressed Burrito! Hope to visit again soon.

Google
Solid but not superb spot. They do a typical assortment of tacos, burritos, bowls, quesadillas, and tostadas but nothing too remarkable in terms of fillings. They recommended the grilled items so I tried a combo shrimp and steak bowl and the taste was fine but nothing worth coming back for unfortunately. The steak itself was of just so-so quality, not too tender. Service was great, everyone was friendly and accommodating. If you're dying for some decent Mexican and you're close by, this is a safe bet, but nothing worth going out of the way for honestly.

Google
This place is awesome! The service was great and the food super yummy, simple, not complicated or over the top; the portions were big and the food was fresh and tasty. We ordered the birria tacos (didn’t disappoint) and the amount of meat was awesome! Burrito was huge and super yummy and the burrito bowl was delish. The place may be in a hidden alley, it may not have a readily available bathroom, patio sitting, fancy plates but if you’re looking for good food that doesn’t brake the bank…pleeeeease go here!!

Google
Burrito was not even wrapped properly and leaked juice. I resorted to using a fork. Staff there was nice but didn’t seem familiar with what they had available

Google
I went there with my family for a quick dinner on a Tuesday evening after reading the good reviews on the Internet. The staff was friendly and successfully met our non-standard requests in terms of Mexican cuisine. The food was very good. It was prepared on the spot for us, and we were impressed with the freshness of the ingredients. The dining room is small (just a few small tables and chairs) but clean and well kept. The prices were very reasonable given the area. Great value for money!

Google
Amazing! I wanted a quesadillas and not being from the area, I looked up walkable place by my employer. When I read the name of the restaurant, it gave me the best chuckle then I saw images of the Penguin mural and was sold! This food was too good to eat at work! So I wrapped it up to take home. Huge portions, fresh, delicious and the COOKIE!? Bayyyybeee tastes like my momma made it. I found my new lunch spot.

Maria Magica

Google
The food is delicious! I had the open-faced burrito with shrimp and salmon and it was delicious! Highly recommend it!

Google
Loved this place! I got an $8 burrito which was the special burrito of the week and it was amazing! Apparently it's the oldest burrito place in DC and it's in a little alley and it feels really authentic. The lady behind the counter was super friendly and the ambiance is great. There's a big penguin mural with a bunch of Easter eggs throughout and they have a decent size seating area for the size of the place. Highly recommend

Yelp
Stumbled upon this little hole in the wall after we find out that our original dinner plans ($18 lobster from Mad Hatter -- maybe we dodged a bullet) were sold out. Couldn't be more happy with our dining experience. I had my first birria tacos & they were delicious! Pretty large portions for around 10.99 per platter. Clean interior and decent seating (though no proper seating for large groups; I came with 4 people and we had to spread out awkwardly at bar-style seating). The dude who took our orders was super friendly! Probably not the best Mexican food in DC but considering that we were wandering around hungry and lost, this saved us.

Yelp
The Well Dressed Burrito certainly excels in portion sizes. I ordered two tacos that were each filled with beef. I wish they were just as generous with their toppings and offered other sauce options, though. The taco itself was pretty bland, but you get what you pay for. For $10-15, it's fine~~ but there are definitely better places in DC.

Yelp
This is one of the spots my co workers been buzzing about and finally I gave in and tried it. Ommmgggg!!!! can we say madddd flavor! The food was soooo yummy! Cooked to perfection! Almost made a tear come out the flavor was so fresh! I cheated and ordered online and just picked up my food. However I was a little upset that I paid for my chips and queso only to receive the queso without the chips. Had to go back up there while on break. And also I did not like the flavor of the queso.... But hey we can't win them all. I'll definitely be back to try other things off the menu!

Sarah S.

Yelp
Terrible Got the whole order wrong (two burritos and we were the only guests there) and the steak was under seasoned. Do not recommend at all.

Yelp
This is becoming a solid lunch spot, and that is solidified especially with the chef's special, the salmon and shrimp open face burrito. There is so much flavor packed into the dish that I am astounded that people would choose certain other fast food restaurants when the well dressed burritos provides incredibly delicious food at an unbeatable price. The salmon and shrimp were amazing, the rice was perfect, and the honey chipotle sauce was exceptional! The service was fairly quick. Even though the restaurant was packed, I only waited about 5-7 minutes for my food. The ambiance is nice and homey, but I typically just grab my food and head back to work. Exceptional burrito from an exceptional place!

Yelp
Talk about a whole in the wall. My wife saw this place on Tik Tok and said we had to give them a try. Me being who I am, i obliged. We pulled up to this location only to realize it's in the middle of an alley. Definitely caught me off guard. We ordered the Dos Tacos and the Steak Chimichurri's. The food came out piping hot. I personally ordered the Steak Chimichurri's and they were absolutely DELICIOUS!!!! Nicely season. The fries underneath were good too. I wish it was a larger portion but for $12 bucks I guess that's all you get. I'd probably return for the steak but everything else was ok.

Yelp
This place gave me the runs and I spent the next couple days nursing a debilitating stomach issue. I ordered the Chimmichunga with beef, and the beef was so dry and chewy. It was just put inside the fried burrito and wasn't shredded or sliced up. This place is really a hole in the wall though. As other people have said, it is in an alleyway, but its pretty well marked that its there. That being said, I probably won't be coming back. My stomach and stool are traumatized from this experience.

Yelp
I have been a Well Dressed Burrito customer for years; however, the last few times I have been there, the food hasn't been as good. Today was the last time for me. My bean burrito was ice cold so much so that the cheese was still in shreds and not melted; there was hardly a bite of guacamole, which is sad especially when you're paying so much extra for guac; and there was more rice than beans. I don't understand how it could be ice cold. Those beans should be piping hot enough to melt the cheese. It's a long walk to WDB from my office or I would have returned it. I also don't have a microwave so I couldn't warm it up. Not sure if management has changed or the restaurant sold, but it isn't up to par anymore. Sorry, as I prefer to support local restaurants instead of chains. Good luck WDB. Hopefully, you can right the wrongs.

Yelp
Tiny little spot off an alley near DuPont Circle. The decor is really cute and there is a small amount of seating. When we went, there was one other person there. The employee at the counter told us about a few of his favorite dishes and we settled on the fish tacos. It took a LONG time for our food to come out. The fish itself was great, but the tortillas seemed really stale and the rice underneath the tacos didn't taste that great. I liked that they served the tacos on top of rice and a generous salad (it also comes with beans, which I skipped), just wish the tortillas hadn't ruined it for me. I probably should have ordered a burrito instead.

Yelp
Since 1986, locals will tell you to go to a Dupont Circle alley to find a good burrito. 36 years later, it stands true. After going for lunch on a Wednesday, here's my experience: 1) Food: Posted at the entryway in the alley is a long menu of different kinds of burritos, open-face burritos, tacos and other items. Open every day of the week for lunch and dinner, there's always a daily special, making it a more affordable lunch in an expensive neighborhood. I ordered the grilled shrimp taco with mild salsa and all the fillings- lettuce, tomatoes, grilled onions and peppers, etc. It was good, but I wish I had requested rice to fill in the burrito more. With a line, I only had to wait for 10-15 minutes and ordering was easy! 2) Space: It's tucked away in an alley with views of St. Matthews Cathedral. Inside is small, but they make good use of the space. There's a clear area to order and a small dining area that doubles as a waiting area. There's a bookshelf filled with old cookbooks and other items, local art on the walls and a 2014 mural by Bryan King of dancing penguins by the Dupont Circle fountain. 3) Neighborhood: Just south of Dupont Circle there are countless restaurants nearby for the lunch and dinner crowds. Public art, museums and art galleries, there's a lot to do. If you love a good deli, wander a block to Bub and Pop's.

Yelp
We couldn't believe this place in DC. The food was so good with affordable price. The restaurant is located in the alley. The staff were nice and friendly. There was lack of seating but we didn't mind as long as food was good. We would definitely come back next time when we are in town.

Yelp
I recently visited Well Dressed Burrito with high hopes, but left with mixed feelings. On a positive note, the shrimp taco salad was quite good - fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. However, the grilled chicken burrito was a letdown, arguably one of the worst I've ever had. The first half was overwhelmingly filled with lettuce, lacking balance in ingredients. The last quarter was even more disappointing, with dry, stale, and bland chicken that was tough to chew. This experience left me really disappointed, especially after the promising start with the shrimp taco salad. Overall, I'm rating it 2 out of 5 stars, hoping for improvement in consistency and quality.

Yelp
Why is the Well Dressed Burrito closing at lunchtime? I am one of your most loyal customers and I eat your food for likely 25% of my lunches throughout the year. For the last two weeks the restaurant has been closed over the lunch hour on Tuesday. A poster says this is due to demand for catering. Obviously business clients for catering services are more important than customers who have been showing up for decades. Please keep the shop open. Thank you.

Yelp
First off, it's a tiny spot! You could easily miss it, so look around and up at signs. The food isn't unlike Chipotle, but it seems more authentic. I ordered a burrito which seemed fitting for the name of the place, but it was cold... the cheese wasn't melted inside, the rice seemed lukewarm, and the meat was okay. My SO ordered a taco plate, which was nicely packed but wasn't overly impressive either. The salsas are good, though! I did enjoy their habanero salsa and a bag of chips. It did pack some heat, and I would definitely return for that. We visited on a Friday at an off time, which worked out because we received wonderful customer service and got to choose seats together. Again, the space is small so it can easily get crowded.

Sophia L.

Yelp
AWFUL I ordered a burrito with chicken, cheese, rice, and lettuce. No tomatoes, no beans. I got a burrito with no chicken, no cheese, no lettuce, and full of beans and mixed vegetables. This is my second time trying this place and I gave it another shot after it was awful the first time. Never again.
google avatar

Karen Y.

Yelp
Maybe I've been spoiled with decent Mexican food in LA and shouldn't expect much from DC, but don't call it the 'well dressed burrito' when the burrito was almost naked. The open burrito had lettuce, 'salsa', cilantro, and a few pieces of dry chicken and steak with a sauce that doesn't pair well at all. Beans?? How about a cilantro lime sauce? Shredded cheese? A slice of avocado? Disappointed because the reviews seemed decent, but it was one of the most underwhelming Mexican food experiences I've ever had. Flavors were as unappetizing as it looks in the picture.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
The entrance is quite literally in an alley so it's very easy to miss! My partner and I walk past here quite often and we decided to stop by and we weren't disappointed! My partner got their Sunday burrito special, which was a heavy portion for only 8.99. I got the steak fajitas and they did not skimp out on the meat! Will be stopping by again.

Ian E.

Yelp
Great portions, savory old school flavors. The red spicy sauce can be a meal by itself!!
google avatar

Hayward L.

Yelp
Definition of hole in the wall, this spot is located right in an alleyway. The burritos are spot on. I had the pork burrito, for less than $10, it is hard to beat during inflation times! It's a very decent size, it will fill you up but you don't feel sickly stuffed like Chipotle. The hot salsa is not too spicy if you're used to eating regular Mexican spice levels. Friendly staff and cute penguin related decor on the walls.
google avatar

Gia Ilyana C.

Yelp
The service was great, I wish I lived in this area because it would eat there every day, also loved how it's a literal hole in the wall place! The food was fantastic my fiancé got the burrito on special, he finished it before I even had a chance to try it. I got the . Bierria tacos they were easily the best I've ever had
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
I was definitely caught off guard as i went into this experience expecting some really good mexican. The staff was very friendly and accommodating when i came to order. Ended up getting the well dressed burrito with grilled chicken for takeout. Wow - talk about bland. The burrito was barely wrapped, basically falling apart. The ingredients had absolutely ni flavor whatsoever. I am confused why this place is so hyped. There must be better Mexican in the area. Wouldnt recommend

Sue R.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch today. Great service we had never been before we asked alot of ? They were nicely answered. Great menu We had enchiladas and salmon & shrimp floor open tortillas so good! Portion size was great. Small place only few seats but on a nice day take it out. Really great!
google avatar

Alan Z.

Yelp
Fantastic food and fantastic service. Really enjoyed how friendly the staff was. Food was out in less than 5 min

Anj C.

Yelp
This was probably one of the best quesadillas I've ever had. The chicken was perfectly marinated and shredded. The mild sauce and the hot sauce were perfect. Service was fast. Wow.
google avatar

Joyce W.

Yelp
The Well Dressed Burrito is kind of hidden in an alley at the heart of DuPont Circle! Very affordable for huge portions and delicious burritos! Make sure to check out the daily special menu item!

Gadget F.

Yelp
Well... the food was tasty but they're heavy handed with the salt. Ate in. Seating is not meant for dine in. Very uncomfortable. The biggest concern was that after I took the last bite I saw a mouse run through the place. Once that happened, that was the last bite regardless of whether I was done.
google avatar

Shantal W.

Yelp
I looooved this spot! I'm so happy I found a great burrito spot in DC! This place is an absolute gem! I ordered the weekend burrito that has marinated pork, beans, cheese, and spicy salsa. I added guacamole inside the burrito. The spicy salsa is actually hottt! My mouth was on fire and I loved it! The guacamole was perfection. Made the flavor of the tender pork pop with every bite! The Mexican bread pudding was great as well! I do wish a few of the bits of bread were softer but I really enjoyed the cinnamon and raisin that was in it. Best end to my delicious burrito. My only complaint is my drink wasn't put in with my delivery. They missed it in the order. Not a huge deal. Didn't ruin the meal at all. Still a 5 star meal!

Ryan S.

Yelp
Had walked by this place for years so I finally decided to try it. Unfortunately, the food is meh. Not bad, but not very flavorful, not the highest quality ingredients, and not at all unique. Basically the kind of American Mexican food you'd produce if you ordered the instructions online. I had their basic marinated chicken burrito with black beans and I added guac. Should have been tasty as that must be a common order. Was too watery and too bland. Also there were issues with the service - they clearly forgot or lost my order, as the staff had to ask me what I ordered and go into the kitchen to find it, and then I had to wait another 10 mins. This is a grab and go lunch spot so waiting 20-25 mins for a basic burrito really shouldn't happen. But mistakes happen everywhere, so if the food had been better, I would give them a pass on the service.
google avatar

Liz B.

Yelp
I didn't take a picture because I was hungry but the service here was nice enough. I got the shrimp bowl (the one without rice) and got black beans and they forgot to put any cheese on top so I went back up to get queso that was very similar to Chipotle's. The fajitas needed to be cooked longer too. The peppers were too crunchy. My friends got the cheese quesadilla and a burrito and we all agreed that we didn't need to come back. I literally put salt and pepper on my meal because there was literally no seasoning or flavor to my meal. It's cheap but I would've rather had chipotle.
google avatar

De'Launa C.

Yelp
We came here on a family trip and ordered two orders of the Birria tacos and a brownie. The service was okay and the food was decent but I'd definitely try another spot next time.

Jessica C.

Yelp
Great food taste and quantity for the price. Literally a hidden gem, since it's in a hidden, out of sight alley.
google avatar

Aaron K.

Yelp
Based on the reviews o thought I found a gem. Honestly the steak is pretty bland, not horrible, not great. I had the pork tacos as well and those were decent. Don't know that I'll come back again.

Yelp
The Well Dressed Burrito is a dope burrito/mexican spot hidden away in the ally's of DC. They have a huge menu and all their food is fresh and filling! We ordered the grilled burritos, chips, queso, and guac! The burrito was A LOT and had a great combination of flavors. It was a flour tortilla with lettuce, tomato, zucchini, squash, pico de gallo, cauliflower, onion, rice, sour cream, guacamole, black beans, and hot sauce. The spot is perfect for vegetarians, since you can modify anything on their menu. It wasn't ground breaking or anything, but still a solid meal. But to be honest, it was the guac that stole the show! It was super fresh and lemony making for the perfect guacamole. It was the perfect addition to the burrito and as a side. The flavors really enhanced the rest of the meal. Coupled with the hot sauce, it was the perfect addition. The queso was also good, but again nothing ground breaking. The chile and onions inside do enhance the flavor! Pro tip: get guac inside your burrito! You can thank me later.

Megan H.

Yelp
Small place with terrific burritos and friendly staff. It's a little hard to find, so look for the signs that direct you into the alley. Prices are great and the portions are huge. Order at the counter, seat yourself and they bring your food to your table. Seating is for small groups. We ate at the counter. We arrived hungry and took leftovers out with us. They don't serve beer or wine. The desserts looked amazing but we were too full to get them!
google avatar

Riley S.

Yelp
So here's the thing, I ordered a veggie burrito here and it honestly didn't make me angry, it just made me disappointed. Veggies in a burrito should be of the pepper and onion variety, but squash and zucchini? Those are two things I definitely do not want in my Mexican food. It didn't make me angry, but it just made me really sad. So now, I just finished eating my squash? Burrito and I'm writing this review to just express how upset and how I want people to potentially reference other Mexican food spots like chipotle. It's not authentic, but you bet your bottom dollar that squash and zucchini aren't in a fifty mile radius of their burritos. I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed. Sincerely, A concerned customer

J B.

Yelp
I'm sorry folks. Despite the good reviews I was disappointed. Here are a few observations: 1. Staff was not particularly friendly. The guy who took our orders seemed to have somewhere else to be. Very unhelpful. I even gave him a tip for which he did nothing. This did not alter his attitude. 2. You are charged for everything - it is more expensive than it seems. 3. No atmosphere and dirty appearance Food: I have had great Mexican food a truly awful food from Mexico. The Well Dressed Burrito is very much towards the lesser side - it is vile. The food was was unappetizing. My El Gordo burrito is not worth describing. It was massive and disgusting. The chicken inside was not warm and sliced in a way that suggests it was commercially packaged. It was rubbery as though it had been microwaved. The burrito was equally vile. The contents appeared to have a stew like quality. The guacamole and salsa ordered was under spiced and expensive for the minute amount they gave. The kitchen looked filthy. After much thought, I hereby award the Well Dressed Burrito with the much coveted Vomitus Restaurantus Award,
google avatar

Billy V.

Yelp
My chicken burrito came out to be roughly $9. It was huge and the chicken was in long chunks. I weigh 185lb and I felt like it was hard to finish. Not sure what it was the beans or some topic inside, but it made the burrito leak everywhere. I would rather eat at Chipotle since it is cheaper and the chicken has a char on it which I personally like better and has fresher toppings I feel. The sauce they gave on the side was too sweet too. Getting to this place was odd too it's placed in the middle of an alley way. Inside is pretty cramped so it might be hard to find seating. We pre-ordered online and once we got there multiple workers locked eyes with us, but didn't bother asking us what we need even when we came to the counter. Pro: -Big burrito and lots of fillings Cons: -Could use better service -Pricey compared to Chipotle -Hard to locate store -Not enough space inside to eat Tips: -Give it a try once just to explore!

Yelp
I'm tired of waiting for Togo orders placed well in advance. People who come in receive my food before I do. Twice my order was incorrect- after they gave me a discount for the same reason. Is it me?! First they left items off of my salmon fajita burrito. Then, they didn't add the extra cheese, beans, sauce, and a side that I PAID FOR in another order. I'm just tired of chancing it. Recommended them to friends who said they had the same or similar issue. Two of which said they won't return. I used to eat here every week. Now it's just one mess up after another. My friends usually trust my judgement especially when it comes to food. Favorite no more- and not because they made a mistake but because they keep making the same mistakes. Costly for me- profitable for them.

Yelp
The most phenomenal taco I've ever had. I almost don't know what to say in this review I'm so speechless. The well dressed burrito is a hidden gem in DC. I got the birria tacos and I was amazed by the flavor, the quality, and the experience. 5 stars

Yelp
Delicious! I ate the shrimp bowl and it was very good! Staff was friendly. Husband enjoyed the burrito.

Yelp
What a great whole in the wall Mexican spot. I got a steak burrito and the meat was delicious. The steak chunks were huge, medium rare, and super flavorful. Wish I lived closer so I could go more frequently!

Yelp
The Well Dressed Burrito indeed! I love this place. I have been here 4 times already! Their Guacamole dip and salsa chips is amazing. I have had their Quesadillas, their Empanadas and their Burrito's. After living in Miami for more than 20 years, I think I know a little something about a Nachos Supreme! This gem is hidden down an alley, but it's so worth the adventure. The restaurant is clean and the people are friendly! Generous portions are given and suggestions are made. I will keep coming back, because this place ROCKS.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying that I ordered this food through DoorDash. My food was not good. I am a little disappointed. The food was very bland w/ no flavor. What you see in the picture is what was left. Hopefully you guys can take that Into consideration. I am open to giving you guys another chance sometime down the line. I really wanted to like the food. It looked really good in pictures.

Yelp
Absolutely bamboozled. I've been lied to. I kept seeing on tiktok that this place is a hidden gem and the best Mexican food in dc. The only true thing about that statement is that it's hidden. It's in an alley. A gem? Absolutely not. Mexican food? Lmfao yeah right. Why is this place hyped up? I'm convinced DC natives and locals don't have tastebuds. I got the weekend well dressed burrito special. Okay for $6.99 it's cheap and a good portion size. But the meat had no flavor. It was supposed to be mango habanero or something and it tasted like nothing. The tortilla had okay texture but I doubt that it's made in house. Their salsas weren't bad. But pretty average. They're very textured if that's your thing. My friend got tacos and said that they were cold. We are everything almost right away when we got them so they shouldn't have been cold. Anyways, if you're craving Mexican food, don't come here.

Yelp
The absolute best Steak Chimichurri you will ever find! Perfectly seared flank steak over a bed of steak fries and a wonderful sauce. My go-to every time I'm in DC. The homemade chips and the 'Hot' habanero sauce are also awesome. Generous portions and reasonable prices for DC.

Yelp
I can specifically recommend the chimichangas, fish tacos, and quesadillas. The seasonings are on the side. I specifically like they hold the salt more than Chipotle. The serving sizes are generous but not overwhelming so I also had room for dessert.

Yelp
Nestled in an alleyway in the Georgetown area of DC is this wonderful, delicious, and slight eclectic burrito place. The food was made quickly, was reasonably priced, and danced on my tastes buds like the families that are trapped dancing in Hocus Pocus. The burritos are also huuuuuge , leaving me satisfied for several hours. 5/5, hope to go back soon.

Yelp
DaaaaayyyyyyyYUMMM this place is such a hidden gem - never have I had a fish taco so crispy and delicious. The fresh guacamole is also super tasty. And their burritos will get you your MONEY'S worth - Good size and packing a lot of flavor! Service is very friendly as well, and a nice low-key vibe for just stopping for a quick bite before wandering around downtown.
