San Diego’s Essential Coffee Roasters and Cafes

"This roaster got its start as a wholesaler before it branched into running its own cafes in Banker’s Hill, Liberty Market, and BayHo (where its roasting takes place). They also make their own artisanal syrups that are a welcome departure from artificial coffee enhancers. For purists (or if you don’t love strawberry chocolate or vanilla in your joe), the traditional, simple drinks are very accomplished too." - Helen I. Hwang

WestBean Coffee Roasters Moving Onto Morena Boulevard | Eater San Diego

"Moving into the Bay Ho site last occupied by Red Card Cafe, WestBean Coffee Roasters—founded in 2009—is opening a new location on Morena Boulevard near Bitter Brothers Brewery, Blue Door Urban Winery, and Truly Fine Wine. Co-owner Andrew Karr told Eater the primary reason for the move is to provide more room for its roastery; customers will be able to watch the roasters at work in a space that will also include a large retail area. Roasting operations, an on-site café, and outdoor patios should be up and running in about three months. The menu will mirror its Liberty Public Market, downtown San Diego, and Bankers Hill locations, featuring cold brew on tap, house-sweetened lattes, pour-over coffee, and classic espresso drinks; the café will start by serving coffee only, with food options to be added later." - Candice Woo

Google
Amazing coffee shop with excellent customer service. I usually get a short iced vanilla latte and it's perfect each time. One day I forgot to say iced, and they remade my drink no problem, and didn't make me pay even when I offered. The branding is beautiful, and all their coffee and syrups are made in house. Plenty of seating with a great vibe. I was in SD for a week and went here about 4 days in a row because it's soo good, and each time had no problem finding street parking. It's metered for only $1.25 for 30 mins, and right next to the coffee shop. The location is prime, because it pretty close to Balboa park, the SD Zoo and on the way to fashion Alley and other shopping, so it's perfect along your commute.

We recently moved to the neighborhood and have been sampling the local coffee shops. So far Talitha has the best Americano by far. The coffee is strong and smooth, and the portion is generous. Other places have good specialty drinks, but this is our go-to place for a high-quality cup of black coffee.

Google
Today we visited this coffee shop. There's a selection of desserts, as well as various breakfast and snack options for those who want to not only drink coffee but also eat. I had a latte here. I liked the atmosphere of the place. I wanted to sit inside the cafe, but all the tables were taken, so it must be quite popular. There are also a few tables outside. I'd like to say that it's quite clean. The staff keeps the place clean and the tables outside. At least when we were here today, it was clean. You can also buy coffee beans to take home. As for the coffee, I didn't really like it. The coffee was a little bitter, probably because of the beans they use. I can't say it was bad, but rather of average quality.

Google
Coffee was quite good! Milk was steamed well and I enjoyed the presentation of the drink. The espresso also had a nice flavor, nothing too strong for those who enjoy a less strong coffee. The space was also quite big, so if you would like to get some work done while enjoying a nice cup of coffee, this place is perfect for that. Workers here are also great!

Google
Nice coffee shop with good enough space to sit and do some work. Their lattes are on point and are at the perfect temperature. Their syrups are made in-house and espresso is pretty smooth.

Google
There’s a reason they’re always empty.. I drive by everyday around 8 am on my way to work, there is never a soul inside. My biggest red flag was that they were empty at 9:30 am on a Sunday but I decided against my better judgment to try it on a whim with my wife, I was under the impression it was still West Bean quality, I ordered the breakfast burrito and espresso over ice, espresso was sour and burnt and the final nail in the coffin was the tortilla wasn’t cooked, very white, no brown spots like it was on a pan, very over priced, and because they’re so slow the baristas are always just standing there. Bankers Hill is rich with fun coffee shops please for the love of coffee go anywhere else, the only vibe to experience to be found there is cheug. Donating proceeds to good causes is cool though.

Google
The institution gets a solid 4. One table with 5 chairs is occupied by the person who is working, all single seats remain vacant. Sweet, unique, there is nothing, do not really want to. Coffee is normal, increase a little grind. Friendly baristas. The coffee shop needs to be updated periodically so that the number of visitors does not drop. For example, the stogies on the street look awful, thanks)

Google
I enjoyed a nice avocado toast and hot drip black coffee from this new coffee shop. The toast came on a locally baked artisan sourdough bread. The toast came with plenty of freshly sliced avocado, sea salt, crushed black pepper, and a drizzle of balsamic. The toast was very tasty, but the sourdough was harder than it should of been. It was difficult to slice with the metal butter knife. It was a hard chew. The drip coffee was strong but a smooth cup of coffee. They offer locally baked goods and have plenty of inside and outside seating. The service was very nice.

Yelp
Place is so clean and has all mean of comfort , meeting or talking , or want to be on my laptop Service was excellent , "Benji" was Awsome gave me a few recommendations and handle my order very quick To be honest I was excited about the quality of coffee in this coffee shop , also to add up the taste of mocha was really perfect ( not so much sweet, great taste of coffee , perfect percentage of crème . I really loved it , like if I never taste such a great mocha before

Yelp
I had previously visited WestBean at this location when I was in town. Now, it's Talitha Coffee. Same setup, it seems, with the same opening time and similar options. Came here two mornings in a row. If you're an early riser like me, you so wish that they were open before 7. With the nearby Starbucks now closed, Talitha and many of the other coffee shops all open at 7, so if you don't brew your own, you have to wait. First morning I came, I had a great cup of coffee. I just need plain brewed coffee: no flavors, no jiz-jazzy stuff, just plain, good coffee. Nailed it the first day I was here. Second morning: wow, someone was half-asleep when they brewed it. Or so it seemed to me. Grinds in the coffee cup and one of the most bitter cups of coffee I've had. Drank about half of it and couldn't stomach the rest. Consistency is key with coffee, and Talitha didn't deliver for me. Disappointing, which is why the 3 stars - an even split from great to yuk. Perhaps I'll give them one more shot, but if I don't brew my own, I'll walk up a few blocks for an alternative if I feel adventurous.

Yelp
I first discovered Talitha's coffee at O'Brien's Bakery and loved it so much that I asked their barista where the beans came from. When I found out Talitha was right in my neighborhood, I decided to stop by. They're in the in the place where old West Bean used to (across from Corner Bar and Cucina Urbana) We picked up a few bags of beans (Arise was our favorite at O'Brien's), and with 2 other bags came a free drip coffee. The drip was fine--nothing exciting. I also got a monkey bread (delicious, warmed up perfectly) while my partner tried a bagel with cream cheese. Unfortunately, the bagel was stale--so tough it was hard to chew even after warming. We also ordered a latte and a cappuccino. Both were just okay, nothing memorable, and honestly didn't taste nearly as good as what we had at O'Brien's. I'm hoping the beans shine more when brewed at home. Overall, Talitha is convenient and close by, and I like that I can grab their beans locally. But the drinks were underwhelming, and the pastry selection is very limited--the bagel especially was a letdown. I'll stick to buying beans here, but for coffee and pastries, there are better options available

Yelp
Stopped by Talitha post lunch in Little Italy for a coffee. The shop is located quite close to Balboa park and 5th ave with some street parking nearby. The outside of the building had some scaffolding up but there was a sign that allowed us to locate the shop quickly. The inside is quite spacious with two large rooms to sit and savor your drinks. The main room is where you order your drinks and there are some seats by the window to look outside whilst the other room is windowless and dark. I ordered a flat white to go, unfortunately the drink had been prepared at a very high temperature and the result wasn't as sweet as it should be. Was quite average of a cup and I couldn't tell if it was the barista's poor extraction of the espresso or the beans themselves. Will have to give them another chance at another location.

Yelp
This was our first time here and it was great! It was a nice large clean space with a lot of seating. The coffee was really good. The food was VERY good! The service was quick and friendly! We will be back!

Yelp
Talitha Coffee shop is located on Laurel/4th across from Postal Annex. This shop opened over a month ago in Banker's Hills, and it took over the space formerly held by West Bean. Street parking can be a challenge. Open EVERYDAY 7:00am-2:00pm I've stopped in post workout and or post power walking with Fendi at Balboa Park nearby. The menu offers simple and complex options of coffee. Really like the matcha and iced Americano with 6 espresso shots!! Pastry selections is limited and are not house made. Other food options made here available too. Service is helpful. The interior offers lots of seating, perfect for work/study sesh. Love the basic cool cement floors, soaring ceiling height and shaded outdoor seating. Good Vibes. Other than their great potent coffee, one of the outstanding features about Talitha is their mission for a good cause...every purchase helps those victims change lives through hiring, training, and holistic support of sex trafficking survivors. So their vibrant wall art says 'Hope Roasted,' is what it means. Recommend

Yelp
Friendly staff. Bagel and small cheese cream packet only $3.50 - bagel is basic but better than grocery store bagels. Dragon Matcha is good but I really could not taste the dragonfruit. Fallin for you (pumpkin chai) is very cinnamony. Dog friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Omg. The falling for you chai is freaking delicious. The pumpkin flavor really comes out and the extra shot just made it so much better. Cinnamon pumpkin deliciousness. One of the best fall drinks I've ever had. The draggin' matcha is ok. Quite flavorful for sure. The bagel was toasted great and the cream cheese is a pre packaged container but it was good. The service was good and quick. I'll be back for this pumpkin chai for sure!!! I wish they had this year round!!!

Yelp
Such a nice spot!! Very clean, service is amazing and professional. So many options to choose from, my daughter told me the burritos are her favorite, the Tots are delicious.

Yelp
Walking around liberty station on a school night, I needed a pick me up and we happen to be seated at a table on from of Talitha. Super cute and no lines. Coffee was good. Extra espresso shot did it for me to last the night.

Yelp
Quick stop in a new coffee shop located where WestBean used to be in Banker's Hill. I'm absolutely loving the colorful branding. We walked in and were greeted immediately. The gentleman made an awesome latte for me and a flat white for my fiancé. Both were above average for the area. The coffee had a nice rich flavor, but was not bitter at all and he got that foam with just the right amount of creaminess. They had a couple interesting things on the menu. There's an Arnold Palmer made with nitro black tea that I will definitely be coming back for on a nice hot day. I saw a few pastries and conchas but wasn't in the market at the moment for a sweet treat. There's also a small menu of food items. This is in a great location about a block away from Balboa Park and a block away from my favorite yoga studio. I'm sure I will be visiting here often!

Yelp
The Butterscotch latte will do it for me everytime! It's been my go to and has stayed that way even when it was West Bean Coffee. I've had enough cups of these to write a review and I've found nothing close to it anywhere else! It is super sweet, so I try to indulge in it once in a while or lessen the sugar. The service is always fast and I really like the location of the cafe. It's a great spot for being productive or if you want to eat and lounge. I'd highly recommend this local coffee shop if you are around Bankers Hill!

Oofy P.

Yelp
Good drinks, good food, good pastries. Friendly staff. Music was a bit too loud, though. Why do so many eateries have loud music? Spacious seating areas, comfortable seats. This is in Banker's Hill, not Little Italy as noted in another comment.

Yelp
I give this place one star for lovely counter service (the barista was very helpful and friendly) and one star for very tasty coffee (i had a ginger vanilla latte recommended by the barista and it was great). i also think the outdoor seating is very comfortable (no horrible metal chairs in sight!). the big downside was this $12 (!!) avocado toast. avo toast is one of my favorite meals and i've never been served one this bad. the bread was room temp and rock hard, the avocado & hard boiled egg were ice cold out of the fridge. the egg itself was overcooked, the yolk had turned to powder and the white was rubber. arugula on top was old, wilted, and totally undressed. such a confusing dish that shows a real lack of care (and a complete misunderstanding of what avocado toast is supposed to be like). for this price, and for a dine-in experience, bread should be warm, avocado should be room temp, egg should be freshly prepared and hot. serving an ice cold egg for $12 is crazy work.

Yelp
Best coffee shop in Bankers Hill. I am the "almond milk butterscotch latte Guy" and they always put up with my requests! I stop by twice a week, every week. plenty of options, delicious every time. They know what they're doing. baristas, genuinely. Coffee is truly on point, service, etc... its just the best. Thanks for dealing with me!! I'm a stickler for the almond milk and my points
google avatar

Yelp
I heard their nitro tea arnold palmer was creamy and delicious, so had to try it. 10/10 does not disappoint! The cafe itself is the perfect spot to drop in for breakfast or a tasty beverage - great indoor and outdoor seating. Staff was warm and welcoming!

Yelp
A little hard to find, cuz location is actually corner of 4th & Laurel (not 5th Ave), lower level of Mr. A's building. Glad I found it, because they had the best gluten-free chia pudding parfait I've ever had along with a flat white latte, which was yummy too!

Holy D.

Yelp
I used to frequent this location when it was West Bean, because it had excellent espresso. Now it has excellent espresso, with additional warmth and soul. I have had only hot drinks here, but the mocha is perfect. The matcha latte is also very good. I get oatmilk for both, and the consistency is silky and just-right. The burrito is great--and they even have large gluten free tortillas to accommodate it (which, if you're GF, you know a burrito in the wild is hard to come by). The tortilla is damn close to regular flour in texture, so this was a win. My only criticism is the whole thing needs a bit more salt--and I'm someone who chronically undersalts food, so that's saying a lot. But easy to remedy, so just a minor detail. The employees have all been super friendly; I usually see Zae (I'm certain I just butchered the spelling here, please forgive me if you see this!). I have worked several barista gigs and these guys are great, and they are all "on it". I watched them helping each other out this morning as they blasted through a line of people, and it's somewhere I might have wanted to work back in the day. This care shows in the drinks, too. I feel comfortable when I walk in, and it doesn't feel pretentious. Highly recommend. The Arise blend is what I think they use for their espresso and every time I have it I literally say out loud to nobody, "Damn. That's good."

Yelp
The Falling For You Chai is absolutely AMAZING! The chai base is made IN HOUSE, which is why it's soo delicious! I had it iced and loved it! I'm going again today actually . Service is wonderful, the girl that helped me was so kind, warm, and welcoming! The place is beautiful, in a great location in Banker's Hill. So should you go...Definitely!!

Shaylee D.

Yelp
Fast and friendly service. Great ambiance and music, def a good spot for studying. Food and drinks were just okay. Animal friendly.

Yelp
Service was superb. Small interior but nice outside seating area. Very clean and drinks were top notch.

Yelp
Not as good as the previous coffee shop (West Bean). Still an attractive spot, but the food and coffee are not quite as good. The servers are unkempt with long hair dangling down.

Isabel S.

Yelp
delicious pumpkin chai sooo gooood also super good breakfast burrito. want to try more

Madi A.

Yelp
Best chai tea I've ever had and I've had A LOT! The butterscotch latte was great too. Service and atmosphere is wonderful. Only downside is that my pastry did not taste fresh - it was hard and seemed like it had been sitting out awhile.
