Yelp
Please don't beat me up too badly my fellow yelpers, but I gotta disagree with most of you on this one and only give it 2 stars for "Meh, I've experienced better". I went to Wetlab with a group of 8 co-workers on a Friday night. One of them had found it on the internet and heard they had cheap drinks, and since it had good reviews on Yelp, I said "Sure, let's go for it!".
First, we had a fair amount of difficulty finding this place. There's no signage for it anywhere, even on the campus where it's located. I asked one of the students in the parking lot if she'd heard of it. Luckily she said "Sure, I know where it is, are you meeting one of the students here??" and she took me back and showed me where this bar is located. I'm thankful I found her. If I hadn't, I'd probably still be looking for the place!
I guess I was expecting a different experience, but on a Friday night this wasn't really what I was looking forward to...This bar is located at the rear of the campus. You reach it by walking between and around a few buildings, boats, rusted anchors, pallets and cages full of buoys and other paraphernalia they use for their studies and classes, and you then enter and walk through one of the school buildings. You'll finally come to the bar which is basically located in the corner of a large open school cafeteria. The lights were on at full intensity so it was very bright inside. The only food available were small bags of chips and popcorn, though they will order in pizza from one of the local restaurants until 9p.m. if you ask. The bar closed at about 10:00 on the Friday night we were here.
The only things they did have going for them IMO were the cheap drinks - I bought a pitcher of IPA for $9. A friend wanted a mixed drink and he got a vodka and tonic for $4. Also, when you go outside on the patio area, there is a nice view of the bay - no city skyline or boats or anything, just wide open water, clouds and some docks in the far off distance.
Yes, they did have a pool table and a Foosball table, but with the fluorescent lighting glaring from overhead, it was too bright and there was no real "atmosphere" to the place. The music was provided via a few computer speakers that were sitting on top of a refrigerator.
Sorry if this review seems prudish. No one can say I don't like some other "out of the ordinary" bars in the area (I gave Harvey's at the American Legion 4 stars and Jimbo's 5). That being said, Wetlab was just too much of a stretch for me. Dim the lights, add some atmosphere, post some signage so people can find the place and have some access so you don't need to walk through an institutional building or sit in a cafeteria where it feels that a crowd of people should be arriving at any moment to eat lunch and maybe I'd give it another star.
