The 15 Best Restaurants in Broward County | Eater Miami

"The “bend” at Deerfield may only boast a handful of restaurants, but it’s home to one of the mightiest in the seafood space. Whale’s Rib’s Dolphin Lunch on Mondays is a go-to for locals, with a freshly-caught 7-ounce dolphin (mahi-mahi) filet served blackened or grilled. Its raw bar offerings remain vast, spanning Ipswich clams, rock shrimp, and escargot."

The Whale's Rib

Google
Have always loved this place and will always love this place. Quick & casual seating, GIANT menu, some of the best made-in-house potato chips ever. Raw seafood is always fresh tasting and served well. Will always stop by when in town!

Teresa A.

Google
Love this place! If I ever come back to this area I will eat here again. I had stone crab legs, which were very reasonable and fresh! The first and chips was also delicious - I loved the grouper ones, so tender! Service by Ashley was great, and Tasha at the front made us feel so welcome and even talked to us after our meal!

Andre D.

Google
Very cozy spot just steps from the beach. Great selection of seafood and regular pub food -- both deep fried and not. I enjoyed a tasty blackened mahi mahi sandwich, and their lobster salad sandwich was also a hit. But the star of the show is the Whale Fries that may look huge, but is easily cleared off. Service is super friendly, and prices are reasonable. Would not hesitate to return.

Google
Whales Rib is a Deerfield staple! Amazing fun atmosphere with great drink options and tons of fun food options and TVs to be entertained! The Whale Fries are to die for!!! Any of the seafood are fantastic options. Recommend the Grouper sandwich

Google
Had the snow crabs, as always very delicious. Great seafood spot. Great blackened mahi mahi sandwich as well. Restaurant been there in like forever, always busy. A Staple every visit. Beach vibes with excellent ambience and service. Average pricing wont break your wallet.

Google
It's a great pretty historic for ma since have been going almost my whole like. It's just by Deerfield Bch. Peir and beach. All kinds of shopping around. I highly recommend going to Island water sports. It's a real cool vibe rustic. Food is all amazing..Don't forget to get extra whale sauce. Oyster are blue point right now. So good. Can't say one thing wrong. I haven't been down to Deerfield in a few years so It was a must stop to meet a friend I haven't seen since I was maybe 23. So nostalgic.

Google
We come here very often. It is one of our favorite spots. Today I had the grouper fingers. They were delicious and so much food I could not finish. My wife had the Tuna and she loved it. I love the chips and the yellow mustard house sauce they have. Its great on everything! Whales Rib never disapoints! We love this place.

Aimee is 1 of the best bartenders I've ever had in my LIFE! I WAS GREETED RIGHT AWAY! My drink was served RIGHT AWAY! She asked me if im hungry RIGHT AWAY! CLAUDIO the manager was SUPER COOL! Amanda the bartender was absolutely PERFECT! AS A high class waiter I HIGHLY recommend this place!

Yelp
This isn't my first time here, but I had a friend visiting and I knew this was a must-stop. There's so much history in this place, and my friend absolutely fell in love with it. We enjoyed the fried shrimp with home fries . she was obsessed with the homemade spicy garlic red sauce. The dolphin sandwich was also delicious, super fresh and flavorful. Our server was friendly and really helped us choose, which made the experience even better. No complaints at all. If you're in the area, definitely come here. The beach is nearby, the vibe is great, and it's one of those spots you just keep coming back to. Love this place.

Yelp
Put our names on the list and they sat 5 parties before us even a table of 12 :( we were standing right in front of the desk too the entire time Don't care how good the food is, service is important and if you're hungry don't even bother, you'll be waiting forever. OVER AN HOUR for 3 people...... Unfortunate. I'm not one to be rude either or give bad reviews, I almost always give good reviews but this is sad - I'll actually never come back and never recommend.

Yelp
It has been years since I had been to the Whale's Rib and happy we went. We all enjoyed our food. You MUST get the whale chips! Sooooo good! Everyone enjoyed their food. The only downside is parking. Managers don't just stand around. When they saw my husband's drink empty it was immediately refilled by the manager. Our server was super friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
A chill restaurant in walking distance from the beach. Outside seating was the best as it was sunny and warm on this particular day. My friend and I enjoyed cups of soup. I had lobster bisque and he had clam chowder. We also ordered oysters, Rock Shrimp and a Blackened Dolphin Sandwich (fries not needed). A very filling and quite delicious meal that would definitely have again on another warm beach day. The server was fine. Not great but not terrible. Our food came out the way it was supposed to and he was always around when necessary so great on that front.

Yelp
The last time we tried to eat here this place had just been on Dinners Drive Inns and Dives and it was next to impossible to get in. Here we are a few years later and we around the corner and decide to try again. This time success! It's Busy but not crazy busy and we get seated immediately. First the brought us drinks, the largest glass of soda I've ever gotten in a restaurant, served in a 32 ounces pitcher with a straw. We started out a couple of soups. My daughter had a cup of lobster biquisk and I had a cup of clam chowder. Both were very good. Afre that we shared a basket of whale fries, a thick cut potato chip, but not fried to a crisp, served with their whale juice "honny mustard" It was different but really good and we all seemed to enjoy it. For lunch we all had different things my daughter got chicken wings. I didn't get to take a photo but they looked really good! Now my wife had a grouper wrap with a baked potato. The wrap must have been really good since she ate the whole thing. The baked potato, she it was one of the best potatoes she has ever had. She said it was cooked perfect!! As for me I had the California chicken sandwich, I got it blackened. The blackened seasoning was very good, it also had cheese, sprouts, avocado, tomatoes and onions. It was an enormous sandwich, the chicken was cooked perfect and it was really good. The service, it was just as good, not only our server, but everyone we encountered. Even the manager, we were at the table next to his office and evertime he walked by he did something for us. Drink refills ect. The only negative thing I have to say is the parking. It sucks, I think they have some valet parking but if you need park in another place they charge you. What suck is you have to pay for four hour when you need only two hours. Not the restaurant s fault.

Yelp
This is definitely a fun little spot on the beach if you're in the mood for seafood. The vibe is cute, the location is great, and it's one of those places that feels like part of the "beach day" experience. That said... I'm not totally convinced I'd come back. It's not bad by any means, but there are definitely better options in the area if you're really craving good seafood. This one is more of a "nice to try once" kind of place rather than a new favorite. Fun? Yes. Memorable enough to return? Ehh... debatable.
google avatar

Yelp
Always a great meal with good service. We're seafood lovers and every time we eat here, it does not disappoint. Consistent food quality and friendly service.

Yelp
Finally writing a review after years of coming to Whale's Rib, because they deserve the love! Popped in over Memorial Day Weekend and despite the crowds, the wait was surprisingly short...maybe 15 minutes tops. Not bad at all for a holiday weekend. We feasted like we meant it. Standouts were definitely the escargot and steamed clams, absolutely fav's on the menu. Seriously, don't sleep on the escargot, it's buttery, garlicky perfection! MUST HAVE! I went with the blackened dolphin for my main. It was a little overcooked this time around, but still tasty and full of flavor. Nothing a little lemon and some dipping sauce couldn't fix. Whale's Rib has been a go-to spot for years, and it never disappoints. Solid seafood, laid-back beachy vibe, and always a few great daily specials. If you know, you know.

Yelp
Such a great restaurant! Would recommend to anyone. The whale chips are delicious, they're a must. When I went, we got the sampler of oysters and loved the Parmesan ones the most. Wasn't too big of a fan of the Rockefeller oysters because of the tomato but still good. The mussels appetizer is delicious and worth getting as well. Inside is also cool and staff is lovely.
google avatar

Paul J.

Yelp
This is your Deerfield Beach stop for seafood! Everything is fresh and prepared quickly. We split the fried rock shrimp, each had a bowl of lobster bisque, and then split the blackened wahoo sandwich. The rock shrimp was served with spicy mayo with a light batter, the bisque was creamy with some lobster chunks, and the sandwich was fresh and had a great sauce too. A local gem, don't miss it!

Yelp
My fresh seafood craving was satisfied! I was staying at a hotel in the area and was looking for somewhere to have fresh fish. On Yelp, the Whale's Rib came up. Due to the amount of good reviews and proximity, I chose to dine here. Table for 1. Service was very quick. Waitlist process was very easy. Once inside, it was very cute to see how they decorate the place. Different state license plates took up the walls. I found out prior to arriving this restaurant was featured on Diners Dine-Ins and Drives with Guy Fieri. I got the fresh dolphin, which comes with choice of salad and 1 side. I got a house salad with a side of whale chips. They are famous for their whale chips. I also ordered an additional side of beans and rice. The fresh dolphin was amazing. I asked for extra lemons. The whale chips were okay. Mine felt like they were not fully cooked/crispy but the accompanying sauce was really good. The house salad was nothing special. But was refreshing to have prior to my meal. The beans and rice were a great addition to the meal. I really enjoyed my experience here and would come back next time I am in the area.

Yelp
Service was exceptional! Our server was on it! Even the manager came around to check on everything. Food was fresh and delicious! I recommend the conch fritters with whale fries. Ambiance is casual beach vibes. The place was very nice inside and out. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Just a short walk from the beach! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Went tonight after seeing all the good recommendations. I ordered a shrimp poor boy, my parents ordered coconut shrimp and crab cakes, while my wife got the Polynesian chicken sandwich. Everything was very good and we ordered a big bowl of "Whale Chips". They were homemade potato chips with a side of some kind of honey mustard. It was very good but totally filled me up before dinner came out, lol. Good little bar/pub type atmosphere. The service was good and the server was pretty good. Recommended!
google avatar

Andrea A.

Yelp
Our first visit here and was seated right away on a Saturday night. The ambiance is just a chill, comfortable place. We ordered: 1) Yellowfin Tuna Sandwich $15 - tuna was small, buns were huge; would probably be better off with chicken or bigger fish size to match the proportion 2) Snow crab legs with two sides $25 - 2 clusters and we got the baked potato and Caesar salad; good and simple 3) Dozen Steamed Clams $14 - 1/3 of them were sandy *** please don't forget to soak them several more times *** aside from that, they were good picks 3) Conch fritters included with whale fries $14 - thinly sliced fried potatoes were addicting and comes with a small side of whale juice, which is their homemade honey mustard. You normally wouldn't hear someone say gimme that whale juice but ey... gimme a jug of that whale juice, please Food came out quick and service was amazing. I have to compliment this: Every single one of their staff were very efficient and consistently attentive to all the customers. I saw such great teamwork, it's impressive. Great job guys and def recommend!

Yelp
Came here over the weekend after hearing that it was featured on Diners, Drive In and Dives and it definitely did not disappoint! First off our server was so nice and super attentive. We felt so welcomed and it was such a great start to an ever better dinner. The restaurant itself is also nice and cozy. We decided to order a round of the homemade whale fries and they were delicious! And the portion was huge! Definitely order them either as an appetizer or as a side because they are so good! Some of our table ordered the lobster bisque and they all raved about it. For my entree I went with the blackened dolphin sandwich and I can honestly say it was one of the best mahi sandwiches I've ever had. It was fresh, flavorful, and BIG! I also got a baked potato as a side and it was perfect. Others at the table ordered the famous Dolphin key west sandwich that was featured on the show and they could not stop talking about how delicious and different it was. I cannot say enough good things about the Whales Rib. If you're in Deerfield and wondering where to eat, definitely come here!

Cecilia B.

Yelp
This place has a lot of hype but it's not worth it. It's basically poor quality bar food. Their "world famous " whale fries are not even crispy- and the rest of the food is just passable. The ambience is : dive bar. The service is horrible too and there is no parking. In summary: skip it if you're looking for good food and service.
google avatar

Chris T.

Yelp
Have been going here for a long time , just never put review in. I always go here when I'm in Florida on vacation, soon to be living there, lol. The place looks like it's from the 80's , but the service and seafood are great. Been here multiple times and always satisfied when I leave. I'd recommend this place for sure and I'll be going there at least once a month now.

Yelp
Our first time at the Whale's Rib was a positive experience. We were very lucky to have found a spot in their tiny parking lot! Hubby and I sat at the bar. It seemed like it was filled with regulars, but they were all friendly. The bar staff, especially Amanda, were excellent and very helpful. We started with the clams casino which was good, but had too much bacon for my taste. We both ordered side caesars which were tasty and fresh. I had the Dolphin Key West sandwich and it was the best mahi sammich I've ever had. I can't wait to either have that again or try the Key West Reuben. My husband ordered the Dolphin stuffed with crabmeat and Ritz crackers with a baked potato on the side. He enjoyed his meal. Overall a great night out and I would definitely return and recommend.

Cheryl D.

Yelp
Whales Rib gets 5 stars from me because it remains a rare and regular reliably good original style Florida restaurant experience. The staff is great and they don't have a high turnover of staff. If you're craving good simple seafood without a lot of fuss at the beach, Whales Rib is for you! No dress code, easy friendly food and service.
google avatar

Emily V.

Yelp
DDD brought me here! I had to try the whale fries and whale sauce. I loved the sauce and the chips were good, too. Some were really crispy and some were really soggy but I honestly liked having the variety! I got a dolphin (mahi mahi) wrap and while I thought the fish was really good, the wrap was missing something. They brought tartar sauce to the table, but I actually opted to use whale sauce on the wrap which helped give it a little something extra. My only issue with the ambiance is the music was super loud. Otherwise, I loved all the license plate decor and the whole vibe of the place!
google avatar

Molly C.

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner while on a business trip in Florida. Sat outside and people watched the tourists and the karaoke from the bar across the street. I am vegan and had my sandwich come out with mayo on it but the staff was super quick to fix it for me. The potato chips (whale fries) were house made and delicious.
google avatar

Kayle V.

Yelp
The grouper wrap was delicious. I got it blackened and the spices were tasty. Comes with a side so I got the baked potato. The lemonade was massive and super refreshing. The service was kind and timely. Highly recommend.

Johnny R.

Yelp
Food was terrible too much breading on the shrimps and fish n chips. The breading couldn't stay on the fish, it was looking and tasting like frozen store bought fish. Service was great ambiance was decent definitely would not go back or recommend to anyone!!!
google avatar

VeniceGrl F.

Yelp
This is our first visit to the whale rib based on reviews here on Yelp. The grandson ordered the dolphin fingers with chips which he really liked. My husband ordered the Hawaiian chicken sandwich which he really liked. I ordered the shrimp scampi unfortunately I had to send it back. It had way too much garlick and pretty salty.. but outside of that we really enjoy the atmosphere and we will definitely be heading back
google avatar

Danielle H.

Yelp
A timeless staple in South Florida. Whale's rib never fails to deliver fresh, delicious, seafood. My tried and true is the Key West dolphin sandwich and whale chips. I've been coming here for years and years, and the quality has always been the best. My boyfriend and I started with the rock shrimp and garlic rolls and he got the fried grouper sandwich. We both left stuffed wishing we could eat more. When in Deerfield Beach do yourself a favor and go to the
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
2 words... Whale Fries!! Sooo good, the whale sauce is off the hook and the Key West Turkey sandwich is so good!
google avatar

Rob K.

Yelp
The food was amazing and the service was great. We had the local rock shrimp and they tasted like small lobsters, the seasoning was really good and the meat was very sweet and tasty.

C B.

Yelp
From the gentleman who was managing the restaurant's free parking lot to our super friendly and attentive waitress, the only thing that topped the spectacular staff here was the food. We couldn't finish our delicious baskets, but I'll never regret starting off with the large bowls of amazing soups haha. My husband and I talked about how hard it's becoming to find small, non-corporate, local places to eat. Places where people like Joe the manager never stops walking around the restaurant checking on everyone and everything...not because he has to, but because he wants to. And where the chef and his staff are hustling, but in a well-oiled machine way. Thanks Joe. Give everyone our appreciation for a great evening.

Yelp
Came here yesterday as we were driving down the coast... it was my dad's birthday and he loves funky spots so I'm glad I stumbled upon this one. For appetizers - We ordered the whale fries, which are just their house chips with a honey mustard dipping sauce. These were phenomenal! We could not stop eating them! We also ordered the oysters which were very yummy. For mains - I ordered the baked stuffed shrimp, it comes with a choice of salad and a choice of side. They came sooo hot out of the oven. It was fun to try...but next time I'll stick with regular shrimp. The beans and rice side however was delicious, I would definitely recommend getting that side option. Ambience - This is a really cool spot, serving dive bar energy. The inside is packed with decorations all over the wall. It is dimly lit inside. Lots of people working here, all were super friendly. Parking - No issues here, they have specific parking spots for customers dining in.

Yelp
The food was really good. The atmosphere was warm inviting and awesome. The service was really fast. My friend and I famous whale fries with whale juice aïoli we also had calamari they were both super delicious. I would go back there again. Ps i'd like how there's a mural of Guy Fieri diners, drive-ins, and dives on the wall

Kenneth C.

Yelp
The wait was short. The server, Sean, was excellent. The food was outstanding. We will be back again.

Yelp
A great place for seafood in Deerfield Beach. I have visited several times and always enjoyed my meal. Parking is mostly easy in front of the restaurant during the week. This is a great area to explore with beach access and a fishing pier so it can get very crowded on weekends and during season so arrive early. The hostesses greet you out front where there is also some outdoor seating but the indoor atmosphere is rustic and fun with license plates on the walls and a lively bar. We ordered the world famous Lobster Bisque and Conch Chowder to start. We normally get the chowder which was a bit spicier than usual but the Lobster Bisque is always the winner, creamy and so good tasting. My clam strips came with plenty-to-share homemade chips and served with a great mustard sauce. We also ordered the grilled Dolphin sandwich which was as good as we hoped for! The prices are fair for this beach location and fresh seafood. If you enjoy all types of seafood, a fun, casual atmosphere and good service try this restaurant. You wont be disappointed.

D M.

Yelp
I have to say, we've been to a number of triple d places that were like so so, this place however, crushed it. The dolphin sandwich was the best fish sandwich I ever had... and I love a good one....this one was killer. Oysters were good and the whale fries too but do not miss out on the dolphin (it is mahi Mahi, not flipper). Excellent service.
google avatar

B T.

Yelp
Very popular spot in Deerfield bch Dolphin fingers and home maid potato chips yummy.very good food.
google avatar

Laura C.

Yelp
This is a really cool restaurant! It's very laid back and both the food and service were excellent. We shared the conch fritters with chips and they were delicious. We shared the blackened grouper wrap with a baked potato and it was delicious. For dessert we had the key lime pie and it was really good. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant!
google avatar

Brian J.

Yelp
Every meal we have is made perfectly and love the atmosphere. Service is always on point and super friendly.
google avatar

Joleen W.

Yelp
I miss living within walking distance of this place! But now we get to make a special motorcycle trip every so often and the Rib is as good as it always was. Our go-to order is a double Stoli Bloody Mary (outstanding), shell combo and rock shrimp to start, and lobsters. Their baked stuffed dolphin is phenomenal and their blackened dolphin Caesar is my favorite salad anywhere. The service is always fast and friendly and the parking attendant always makes sure our bike gets into a safe spot. Whether you sit inside and enjoy the variety of licenses plates covering the walls, or outside to enjoy the salty air and people watching, you can't go wrong. My only complaint about the Rib is that rock shrimp is not always available, but that's because they're seasonal and no reflection on the restaurant. Still loving this place going on 30 years.
google avatar

Mrs S.

Yelp
One of the best dive bars around! Anytime I have friends and family in town the and insist on going to Whales Rib! Number one you cannot go to this place without ordering the whale fries (homemade potato chips). I've ordered almost everything on the menu, but my favorite is the Key West sandwich with blackened dolphin! Always friendly and excellent service!
google avatar

Claire S.

Yelp
The Whale's Rib is a cute spot along the main strip in Deerfield Beach. A friend and I stopped in for dinner on a Sunday night, and we easily snagged a table outside. They were out of the fresh catch fish at that point, which I always try to order when possible, so I ordered the Grouper wrap, and my friend had the dolphin sandwich. The meals were okay. After our first glass of wine, the waiter took our glasses away, rather than asking if we wanted a second round. A bit odd. Overall, I'd come back if I was in the area and they had the fresh catch available.
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
Whale's Rib is the best way to introduce newcomers to South Florida -- starting with a few bars, the beach, and Whale's Rib to finish it off with the LEGENDARY Key West Dolphin sandwich, a few beers, and a dozen raw oysters. If I was absent from Florida for a year, this would be the first place I'd want to visit after a return! Deerfield Beach and Whale's Rib have the old Florida beach vibe preserved -- which is becoming a rarity. The crew member was in training and she was a blast! She had us try some of the secret whale sauce which go great with the whale fries!
google avatar

Cheri M.

Yelp
Always have to go here when I visit. The wait was long (45 min) but the food and service were excellent. Each guest is greeted and checked on numerous times. The chips and clams are delicious as well as anything blackened. Can't go wrong!
google avatar

C H.

Yelp
Surprisingly good pasta seafood dish with garlic rolls. Also got oyster and king crab legs. All good. Not that big of crab legs for the $70 price for 3-4 legs but it still Overall was good. They don't know or understand GF and I asked from something non-alcoholic and I was stared at. They have a non-alcoholic beer and weren't aware even though it's on the menu. The side salads were plain but fine. Finally the kids menus were interactive which weee nice entertainment. A 30-45m wait but you put your cell phone down and they text you so that's nice. It's a dive bar but has character. I would come back for that pasta garlic cheese butter sauce and oysters.
google avatar

Dalton L.

Yelp
Really enjoyed my visit to Whale's Rib -- great vibe and even better seafood. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and came out fast. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the area.
google avatar

Dmitry D.

Yelp
Great freaking service is the only thing I can say. But the food was for anyone without a taste big in their mouth!! The worst oysters rocketfeller I have ever had in my Life . Drinks had zero alcohol and even after asking to have another one still had zero . The clam Chowder was empty like 2 cla in it and flavor was basic And anything guy fieri goes to is always. Complete garbage because it seems as though they pay him To come out only Because they suck ?
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
It's a pass. Very much a dive. Calamari was good, but the smallest portion ever for $16 Had a blacked grouper that was 85% bun. It felt like it had good history, but the food has not moved past the 90's. Highlight was the Florida weather outside. Hope this helps management.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Had a delicious shrimp appetizer and the Key West Group grilled - highly recommend both. It's slightly odd that the sandwich doesn't come with sides given the price, but I couldn't even eat the whole thing so it didn't matter much to me. Our server was bubbly and attentive and since it was nice out, we took advantage of eating outside. Great beach spot to grab seafood, that's for sure.
google avatar

Norma M.

Yelp
Our friend took us here. She was raving about their Rock Shrimp appetizer but it was sold out. Tried the popular item on the menu that was featured on Guy Fieri's DDD - Dolphin Sandwich (blackened). Also ordered their Grilled Sea Scallops which came with a side of Caesar salad . Both mains were of generous portions and cooked perfectly. We sat outside and the lighting is bluish purple so am sorry for how the pictures turned out. I forgot to take pics of the scallops. But I guarantee you, they were simply grilled but amazing. Great food and service. Could be quite a wait when you come after work. We walked here from our house a block away but for those who drive, valet parking is $7. Depending on what day and time you go, you might luck out finding street parking or at a parking structure nearby. Would definitely come back next time we're in DFB again.
google avatar

Nicole C.

Yelp
First timers and highly recommend visiting! The vibes were on point and the staff was extremely friendly. I came with a party of 8 and even though it was a busy night, we waited no more than 15 minutes! all our food came out hot, extremely fresh and tasty!! Delilah, our server was amazing and really took care of us. We can't wait to come back next year for our next family trip!
google avatar

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
The food was on point and fresh...The service was amazing with our waitress, Lauren. She was very friendly and knowledgeable of the food. I definitely enjoyed and recommend checking out this restaurant if you're in the area.
