Best Wine Bars in Phoenix, Arizona - Eater Phoenix

"The Whining Pig has a chill vibe with wines that come by the glass, bottle, or as a flight. Pair your wine of choice with a grilled cheese sandwich or charcuterie board. This is a place where it’s not uncommon to see customers playing board games; the atmosphere is all about kicking back and relaxing." - Rudri Patel

Go downstairs and you'll find The Whining Pig. Go to the back of the bar, down the hallway to your right, and you will find their speakeasy, Pigtails. Great drinks. We didn't have any food.

Martin Lebl

Google
Phenomenal selection of beer both on tap and in bottles/cans, and pretty decent selection of wine. You can also get cocktails from a sister cocktail bar down the hall. Food is limited to panini-like sandwiches, meat and cheese board, and a few selections of raw bar, also from next door. So not a great selection of food, but then you aren't here for the food are you? But nice to have something to go with the beer if you need it. Prices aren't great, but it is a bar in a mall, so that is sadly to be expected these days. Service can be great, or not; really depends on who is behind the bar when you drop by.

Google
Can't say enough about this place. One side is a chill vibe and the other is more upscale. Service is awesome. Beers are awesome. Their rotating beer selection forces a creature of habit like me to try something different.

Tyler Pieper

Google
Amazing selection of craft beer and good vibes! Came here during happy hour and enjoyed the $1 off drafts until 7pm. I’m from Minnesota and this gave off a local brewery type of vibe once you get down into the place. Would definitely come here again as they continue to rotate beers weekly.

Alex Top

Google
What an awesome place, you have great selection of beers, ciders and wines. Staff is extremely friendly and will let you have a try before you order, they will also recommend some good items to have. I would definitely recommend visiting, and I’m pretty sure you will want to come back at least a second time to try some of the other stuff since the menu is so extensive!

Google
Horrible customer service! The worst yet!!! The only gal that was at the bar was not attentive at all! We had to go to her. We ordered our beer, which is over priced (10 dollars for a pint of beer 😳) We also ordered a meat and cheese board. She forgot all about us! When she was approached about it she said she was with other customers (for 15minutes???) It wasn't that busy! Overall, the assortment of beer/wine/mead was phenomenal. Way over priced IMO and we are from the PNW, the mecca of great craft beer. The service was horrendous and this alone is why we would NEVER return and we would NEVER recommend anyone we know to stop here. So Disappointed!!!!!😬😔🤔

Want to experience a speakeasy? Well then go to the Whining Pig at Desert Ridgeway! The bartenders are amazing, the drinks are phenomenal, and the food is delicious! This place has such a chill vibe with the best music playing and to top it off, they are so inclusive! I feel so welcomed there and I absolutely love Whining Pig! My boyfriend and I will most definitely be back for our possible 4th or 5th time! This place is BOMB!!!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾❤❤❤ Thank you Whining Pig for being so damn awesome!

Google
My review is of the apparent hostess that worked 1/19, and not the place itself. Last night a friend and I were looking for a place to grab a drink after a movie and randomly googled and found your establishment. We went down the steps and walked into the open bookshelf door and sat down. We said hello to the the brown haired woman behind the bar and was greeted with a rude glare and no response. As we sat for a while we then tried to get that woman’s attention to ask her about the menu..to which she rolled her eyes and ignored us again. After a few more minutes of not being acknowledged, we see the same woman greet, give water and explain the menu to other people that just walked in. We then noticed that we may have come in through the back door by accident. To which we quickly got up and corrected our mistake. HOWEVER, if that rude, brown haired, eye rolling woman had been an actual hostess, and explained to us “hey guys, you came in the wrong way” we would have apologized and corrected the situation. Instead we were met with rude glares, no acknowledgement and just ended up leaving. The atmosphere is wonderful and the drink menu looked great, but I probably won’t be back due to the absolute horrible experience at the actions of that “hostess” who instead of letting us know we were in the wrong, she acted like a child and was beyond rude.

Yelp
I've been to this location a couple of times so I'm familiar with how to locate it but each time whoever I'm meeting can't seem to find it. Look for the bronze sign, look over the hedges, look for the stairs leading downstairs into the outdoor bar patio area, follow the walking map on Yelp! Once you locate it though you find yourself inside this cool bar with tons of beer, ipa, cider & wine options on a chalkboard wall in color coordination to make it easy to choose. If you still can't decide the friendly bar staff will help you out, there are a lot of options. They do have some things on happy hour. Food wise they have a charcuterie board, grilled cheese sandwiches& potato chips. Menu items from Pigtails are also available at the bar. There is a big bar top area and other indoor table seating, patio is shady during the day. I'd recommend this spot if you're out shopping and need a break or if you just want a cool bar to hang out at. If you like ciders the Black Widow -Original Sin cider is very delicious.

Yelp
Awesome Happy Hour and not packed at Friday around 4p. They have tons of specials and lots of mystery items if you're willing to take a risk! The bartenders were so friendly and it's a super chill vibe inside. Music playing, random shows playing on TV, and all kinds of fun games available to play! They have Touch Tunes as well so you can request your favorite songs if you'd like!! I ordered the brown bag special beer and it was a super refreshing kolsch! My husband did the same and got the Sonoran White Chocolate Ale! $4 per can and what a deal!!

Yelp
Located in Desert Ridge Marketplace, I checked out The Whining Pig on a Saturday night. Since I live in the area, I walked over. There is ample parking if you're driving. This beer-focused bar isn't the easiest to find because it's underground down a stairwell. Look for the signage close to the stairwell. Ambiance (3.5/5): We sat at a booth at the bar. It's one of the few seats that have back support (which is important to me due to my old man back). Outside of that, it's all barstool seating with no back support inside. Outside, they have a small patio with chairs. That would be another option for me when the weather cooperates. The decor inside is your typical beer bar decor. Laid back. Comfortable. There's a jukebox. A cool place to grab some brews. Service (3.5/5): Two bartenders were working that evening and they were pretty solid. I did have to grab their attention a few times but no biggie. The Whining Pig has daily specials including a beer and grilled cheese combo on Wednesdays. I was curious on the price. They didn't know nor did they find out. That was a miss. Food (N/A): No food for me on this visit as I had dinner prior. They have a small menu, mostly made up of various grilled cheese sandwiches. They have a classic one, a pizza one, and a few others. I'm a dan of grilled cheese so I'll definitely try one out at some point. They also have charcuterie boards. Drinks (4.5/5): Now for the good stuff! Unlike most beer spots, they also have wine and several cocktails. But when in Rome, so I went with a beer flight. You can choose five beers of your choosing from a list of 40 beers or so. While they don't brew their own beer, they have an interesting selection of local craft beers and European ones. The types of beers you're not going to find at your neighborhood bar, including saisons and sours. The flight is served in a pig shape holder which was pretty funny. Flights are always my go-to when they're offered as they allow you to try out a nice variety. Added bonus: Walk down the hallway past the bathrooms and you'll run into Pigtails---a speakeasy owned by the same folks. That way, you can get both your brews and elevated cocktails fix in the same night.

Yelp
What a fantastic hidden gem at Desert Ridge--The Whining Pig. Tucked away behind a discreet entrance, you head down some stairs, turn right, and walk through a door--then wow! You're greeted by a stunning wall of greenery, making you feel like you're stepping into a lush forest. The drinks are equally impressive; we enjoyed a few with a smoky flair, and I'm already craving another.

Yelp
I've always been a big fan of "The Whining Pig" establishment, but this location is by far the most comfortable with great service. I'm a mother of two toddlers, and the entry area is so welcoming and probably one of the few places I can just enjoy a beer with my whole family without stressing about my kids running around or bothering anyone. They love the chalk wall, the bathroom is clean, and the staff is very kind and understanding. As a parent of young kids, you want more than anything to get out, but it's almost more stressful getting out than just staying home and keep the craving and FOMO stirring. Here, I can get the best of both worlds. It was interesting as there were 3 other families there with you kids/babies when we were there too. Clearly we all have the same thoughts, lol.

Yelp
The beer selection on tap here is extensive and regularly rotates. There is plenty of seating indoors and outdoors.

Yelp
Really fun laid back bar with a speakeasy attached. They have board games and card games as well as an outdoor sitting area. The bar sits low, underground with an outdoor entrance - it's pretty fun and laidback for a casual night with your partner or friends in the North Phoenix area. Didn't try the food but I saw they have grilled cheese specialties Drinks were good, their menu is on a chalkboard and really friendly bartenders.
google avatar

Maja D.

Yelp
My friends and stopped here after our brunch on a Saturday afternoon. We love the speakeasy vibe which is what this was like! Once we got in, the space looked great and was spacious but it felt cold not in the temperature sense but the servers felt like we were bothering them when we ordered our drinks. We got espresso martini all around which was delicious. We asked the bar tender how he made it and he was a little rude so we won't be coming back! I still gave this spot a 2 star cause the place was tidy and the drink was delicious.

Yelp
Their hours of operation are really great for a late night weekday place to meet a few friends. The vibe of heading downstairs through a side door or back entrance is pretty cool and not typical of what we tend to find around town. Of course the selection of beers is amazing, just about anything you can think of they have. Plenty of non-alcoholic beer options that accommodate even alcohol free patrons very well. The service was great, and the only reason I wouldn't give it five stars is because it's a fairly small snack food type menu and they were out of Brie cheese for their cheese board. When food options are limited, I think it's important to ensure the menu items are well stocked.

Yelp
This place is pretty good, good beers and friendly staff. I love the way it's decorated and the giant chalk board and the art on it.

Yelp
I LOVE THIS PLACE! i go here often after work to hangout with friends or have a couple drinks. The staff is very friendly, the atmosphere is very calm and welcoming. The chicken quesadilla is BOMB! And i kim the oysters. We had their peanut butter jelly shots. A bit more on the pricey side and sadly they took off the wings from their food menu.
google avatar

Matt Z.

Yelp
Great date spot for happy hour. Austin and Kyle were friendly and fantastic bartenders. The selection of beers and cocktails is extensive, so whatever your preference is for beer, they have something that fits. Would definitely come here again. They also sell drinks to go, so if you find something you like, you can take it home and enjoy it later.
google avatar

Yelp
Been here a few times before and never got around to a review until now. Such a fun, quaint place tucked away in a lower level basement style setting and a nice patio area before entering that is all complete with indoor and outdoor games. So many beers on tap to accommodate every kind of taste. Good HH specials and friendly service make this a must visit when at Desert Ridge.
google avatar

Lacy K.

Yelp
Relaxed place. Great spot to take a break from shopping or to wait for a shot in the Pigtails speakeasy in back. Lots of seating and even some outdoor tables. The chalkboard walls inside and out make it fun and different each time. Husband and I enjoyed hanging at the bar and occasionally playing a game (small games and trivia all over the bar). The bartenders were very knowledgeable and gave great suggestions.

Yelp
LOVE THIS LOCATION. i have never been to this location until my coworkers told me about it (but i've been to the gilbert location). the staff were all so friendly and the ambiance here was so classy and casual. unfortunately i didn't get pictures of the front part of this pub but i captured the super cool back room! highly recommend! i will be back here when i am in the area. thank you!
google avatar

Yelp
Looooove this spot! All of the Bartenders are awesome, but You have to go when Lexi is there... she's my favorite! The vibe is chill and there's always great conversations and the most adorable dogs ever in the patio area.
google avatar

Jamie C.

Yelp
Great ambiance and selection! Fun place for a casual hangout. It was a little tough to find (it's downstairs).

Shelly M.

Yelp
Horrible service with a RUDE bartender. Too many other excellent bars in Desert Ridge to put up with this kind of attitude.
google avatar

Jodi H.

Yelp
Food situation is very unclear- seems like they have it but really just snacks. Food from the dive bar is available but took over 30 minutes. Beverage choices are great just wish the food was better advertised ahead of time
google avatar

Samantha P.

Yelp
Amazing selection but the service towards women was very off putting. Ironically, the bartender was training someone and the trainee was more competent, kind, and welcoming. There was only 5 other people in the building and the bartender seemed uninterested in providing service. As a female who works in the bar space this was extremely disappointing as I was really excited to support Whining Pig. Womp womp
google avatar

Dawn M.

Yelp
No where in the reviews does it say to go downstairs, across from Dave and Buster's. This is helpful information to have. I was expecting a brewery in terms of making beer in house but this is a tap house. The selection is vast and I love that the selections are color coded as to type of beer. It made it easier for us out of towners to order. I was thrilled to see a few Toppling Goliath beers on tap as well (being from Iowa and all). Staff is friendly and knowledgeable, made us feel right at home. The patrons are of the younger variety so we were a bit above average. Don't get me wrong, it is a refreshing bit of youth that was needed.
google avatar

Sabrina S.

Yelp
Location; Desert Ridge is located downstairs is super cute little inside and outside seating location. This is best place, for beer lovers. Many different flavors for everyones pallette. Food; Probably one of the best grilled cheese sandwich sandwhich, yummy. Also ordered the meat and cheese platter, which also was very tasty. All fresh, and delicious. Service; Order at the bar, bartendar was very friendly and informative.
google avatar

Brittanie C.

Yelp
The drinks were great and customer service was awesome. We played games on the table which is always fun.
google avatar

Johnny G.

Yelp
We have been here twice... PEANUT BUTTER STOUT - we actually call before we come to see if this stout is tapped. Beyond the stellar tap and wine choices, the ambiance is upbeat and loud...but super fun. There are games on the tables so that you can't be bored when having drinks with the dullards you brought with you. I never really understood the whole games and trivia on the table...but my wife ALWAYS whips out the trivia and starts quizzing me. This last time, we actually had a meat and cheese board. Amazing and hit the spot. Maybe next time we will try a different drink...but if Belching Beaver Peanut Butter Stout is on tap, there is fat chance of that happening. I will drain that keg.

Colten K.

Yelp
This is our go to bar. The drinks are always great, and a good deal. Everyone there is always so friendly. We love the atmosphere and all the games that you can play!
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
I had a great time, fantastic menu of cocktails, wine and beer great charcuterie I had a wonderful time the music was amazing. The only issue I had is when the bartender Short changed me, and then blamed on the fact that he had been fired or lost his job from the Silicon Valley Bank. I got to tell you if you worked thank you shouldn't be Schurch changing people specially when you're someone like me as a big Tipper

Collin N.

Yelp
Nice place. Good service. Shame there are an employees kids running around in the bar area.
google avatar

Leslie G.

Yelp
Been here a few times now and definitely will be back. When you first come in it can be overwhelming with all the beers they have. The walls are covered in chalkboard with the beers listed out. After a few minutes of soaking it all in the bartender asked what we normally drink and gave us good suggestions. Not much in the way of food, but did try a couple grilled cheese and there were very good. Grilled cheese and beer go well together!! Like most places now there are board games and they have different vendors come in for marketing. Fun, relaxing, and not snobby.
google avatar

Jacqui B.

Yelp
Great selection of beer & wine for sure. Not a large food menu; they serve more options in the adjacent speakeasy that can be delivered to your seat at WP. Service has run the spectrum with each of my visits to this location....some of the servers are engaged & knowledgeable, some not either of the above because of the time they spend on their own mobile devices. All in all, it's still one of the better choices for beer or wine at Desert Ridge.
google avatar

Elaine O.

Yelp
Great place to go, good vibes with friends in the area. Wish there were more places like this in the area. Can get crowded on Fridays and Saturdays but the speakeasy part has more cocktails and gets more crowded (because of the smaller seating). It's a little secluded from the marketplace and the entrance is unassuming , unless you're looking for it. I've taken many people here (but mostly because it's close to me as well)
google avatar

Rick P.

Yelp
Fantastic. It's got that tucked away, almost secretive location. Great atmosphere. The beer selection? Prepare yourself, it's literally wall to wall. If you're looking for a cozy(though by no means tiny) place to share a game and some drinks, you surely won't do wrong by going here.
google avatar

Karina G.

Yelp
Liking the idea of the whining pig!! Awesome beer and wine selection, great vibe, and games galore! Cocktail lounge (pig tails) coming in a couple weeks!'Only missing that 5 star for the menu options. It would be great to have more options for casual bites. (Definitely not good for the dairy free peeps) however, our server gave us a bowl of chips! All in all, an awesome, fun experience!
google avatar

Dakine B.

Yelp
I could go into details about the beer or the wine. Or the decor. But simply put, Mike is a bad ass. Super nice. Superbly knowledgeable and has great taste in music. Thanks, Mike. Much appreciated.
google avatar

Dog F.

Yelp
I enjoyed the food and beer. But the Water they offered on Tap seems to be a bit contaminated. Ive noticed this seems to be the norm now with bars. They dont really pay for the maintenance to filter the water properly. It kinda made my throat sick.

McKinsey S.

Yelp
My husband and I go here regularly. We get to try new beers and meades while playing fun games! The price is good and the bartenders are the sweetest!
google avatar

Zach H.

Yelp
Just like all the Whining Pigs, this place is awesome. There are friendly bartenders and friendly patrons. There are so many beers on tap, it is easy to find an old favorite or try something new. I love having games to play as opposed to a TV with sports. I am a huge sports fan but it is nice to be without every once in awhile. I will be back anytime I am at Desert Ridge.
google avatar

Sascha S.

Yelp
I need to preface this by saying that I'm from LA. Maybe my standards are too high. When you walk into this place, it looks like something you would find in LA. However, they literally had one food item available. They said they could make one grilled cheese sandwich and that was it. So, our table of six women shared one grilled cheese sandwich. It was a Wednesday night, but I still can't imagine a good reason for not having food in a restaurant. They do have an extensive drink list, but not a single non-alcoholic beer. The only options for sober people are canned sodas. Like, not even a high-end bottled root beer? Weird, but OK. I selected the place because it looked cute, and because it's my birthday. I would probably go back, because there is nothing else nearby like it. But, if I were to become a regular, I would definitely speak to a manager and ask for nonalcoholic options. Cute Decour, and fun games on all the tables. Good hangout spot. Great outdoor patio, too. Check it out, but keep your expectations low.
google avatar

Alyson L.

Yelp
I love coming to this Whining Pig location! The bartenders are cool, the drink selection is phenomenal, and there is just something about drinking underground that feels amazing :-)
google avatar

D M.

Yelp
The beer selection was overwhelming. One bartender was nice enough to try and really help with my selection but the others not so much. This is why only 4 stars. The other bartenders were friendly but not super attentive. For being such a small establishment I felt the service could have been better in terms of speed, attentiveness and help with the beer selection. Also, no one mentioned it was happy hour I knew cause a friend had told me. That feedback aside the rest of my experience was fantastic! Yummy but simple menu, fun games all over the bar counter and really good atmosphere. It's a very dive bar local crowd feel. I will absolutely go back again but maybe I'll brush up on their beer list so I have an idea of what I want to drink.
google avatar

Justin P.

Yelp
Finally got to visit another Whining Pig location today. This one is big, open and much more inviting. Plenty on tap as opposed to all fans/bottles. Insane selection - at least a dozen choices for even the most specific and choosey of preferences. Great happy hour. Awesome patio. Can't wait to go back.

Erika E.

Yelp
Cool environment. But the bartender was super rude and ruined the experience. We went on 02/26 at about 230. At first we thought he was overwhelmed with customers so we didn't bother him very much. But after it slowed down he was still super rude and almost bothered by our basic questions. Probably not going back.
google avatar

Erica M.

Yelp
We had always heard great things about this place and so I was excited to go when it opened! It didn't disappoint! This cute place is located right under Dave and Buster's underground. There are a few outside tables on artificial turf. The rest is a big bar area inside and a few long tables. I sat with my hubby and we had beers and played games. The only food they have is grilled cheese and a charcuterie plate. We opted for grilled cheese and it was great! He had a ham and American cheese and I had a prosciutto, goat cheese, and fig jam one! Mine was the winner, but they were both good! We played some games I remember mostly from childhood, watched some football, and had a few beers off their very extensive drink list. We've been twice since they opened and will continue to be back! It's almost too good of a place to share about :)
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Definitely a 5 for me. I saw the3 signage and thought it was going to be a BBQ joint. I was happily surprised at the selection of beers and the ambiance of the place. Tucked downstairs in the Desert Ridge shopping center. The games and things to pass time were also fun. A few pints and a few rounds of 'Know your meme' made for a decent time to wait for the ladies
google avatar

Taylor F.

Yelp
This place is a solid go to if you're looking for a very casual vibe and a really good beer or cider. All locations have games and it's really fun for dates or friendly get togethers.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Where else can you go for a variety of wine, beer, ciders, and other brew crafts. They have a great outside seating area and very roomy compared to the other locations. I love how it is down stairs and feels like a secret spot. The happy hour grilled cheese is good. The only issue I have found is that there are a couple employees that when may not pay enough attention to the service needed. Chatting with people and generally seeming to not notice anyone waiting to order or pay. All around good place aside from that.
google avatar

Ellie S.

Yelp
What a great new addition to Desert Ridge! Our bartender, Kyle, was very friendly. Huge selection of beer and wine. No hard liquor at the moment, but that will be coming soon. Laid-back vibe. I'll sorts of fun games to play. We didn't eat, but were told that the grilled cheese sandwiches are to die for. Aside from grill cheese, they have a meat and cheese board. That's it in terms of food. You mostly go there to have fun and drink! Happy hour was going until 8 PM, but even afterwards the prices were reasonable.
google avatar

Dave H.

Yelp
My wife and I visited yesterday. The lack of highly visible signage slowed us down but with Google walking maps, we found it. They have a great outdoor patio area (below street level so you don't have to see all the people walking by} the inside is trendy and the walls listing all the wines and beers available. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and pointed us to exactly the wines we wanted. I found my new favorite wine yesterday and new favorite stop. Food mainly meat and cheese selections but you will find what you are looking for here.
google avatar

Alejandra O.

Yelp
Super cute place with a good variety of beers and whine on tap ! I discovered a new whine by doing the deal where the bartender chooses one for you playing like mystery wine ! Such an awesome place for a chill night
google avatar

Lisa V.

Yelp
I've been here many times now and will keep going back. There is a ton of options on several blackboards on the wall, from beer to cider to wine. Usually I will try to pick one new drink and I always also go back and get a strawberry lime cider, which has become my go to drink here. Basically there is something for everyone. And they are good about letting you sample if you're unsure if you will like something. There is an inside seating area and outside seating, which is dog friendly. There are board games available to play, as well as outdoor games. It's a very causal atmosphere, and they also have a hidden speakeasy in the back if you want a fancier atmosphere and craft cocktails.
