White Swan Hotel | Best places to stay in Stratford-upon-Avon

"Wood-panelled walls, beamed ceilings and roaring fires – the White Swan has been welcoming guests since 1560, although the building dates back to the mid-15th century.  Step through the door and you could almost be in one of Shakespeare’s plays; much of the Tudor touches and furniture styles have been kept in the bar, along with the ‘character’ bedrooms – those housed in the oldest part of the building. Newer rooms are less remarkable, although still extremely comfortable; after a day’s sightseeing, being able to just walk up to bed after dinner can be the biggest luxury of all. Situated right in the heart of town (which can make parking something of a challenge), the White Swan is walking distance from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and the Royal Shakespeare Company. It’s a great choice for those wanting to immerse themselves in Stratford’s history, with a buzzy, informal pub feel. " - Annabelle Thorpe

Very lovely historic hotel with great character. We stayed in the old part of the building, where the rooms were surprisingly spacious: main bedroom with very soft bed (though no canopy as in the photo), large bathroom with long, deep metal bathtub (ahhhh!), and a separate luggage room. Communication before arrival was very thorough, and we were greeted with a personalized handwritten card in our room, along with some treats. Perfect location less than 5 minutes' walk to Shakespeare's birthplace. Hotel staff very friendly and attentive; restaurant is fine, table service a bit slow (we had to ask for the bill and were almost late for our show at the RSC, but made it just in time). Offers a breakfast-in-bed option, which you should definitely take advantage of.

This is a great hotel to stay with, Lucy, Freya and Molly on the front desk remembered us from our 4 night stay last September and greeted us like family! We booked for 6 nights this time. The room was perfect, had a large wet room bathroom with safety bars and seat which was perfect. The restaurant has the best Sunday roast dinner with delicious Yorkshire pudding (nice and crisp and light). The restaurant has a menu of equally as delicious treats. And they do a great English Breakfast. The desserts were to die for! Cannot recommend this more heartily!

Booked 1 night in one of the character rooms. Booked direct through the hotel website and got 10% off. |We got the four poster room (103) which was amazing. Lots of history and character all around the hotel. Lovely food in the restaurant. Excellent service all round. |Would definitely stay again.

The best in Stratford! The history, the beauty, the beams, the quality of the breakfast and just the overall quality of the Rooms and facilities is perfect. All The staff are very professional and polite throughout. Unbelievable value, top stuff, well done.! Little things, like the barista quality coffee in the rooms, the extensive breakfast menu, it’s truly a great place.

I am an American. So let me speak to my brethren because we might understand the circumstances better with each other. I paid A LOT to stay here. I wouldn't pay to stay here again. Not that it wasn't wonderful, just not wonderful enough to make up for that sort of money. Like $1000 for four days. There are so many hotels here, this place is so small that they must all be within walking distance to everything. So I'd rather pay less for less, and save my money for a play or souvenirs. ||I had one of the three better rooms. Not worth it. Air con did not work properly. I mentioned it...nothing. Room has a fridge.||The food was bad. Seriously, I ordered everything and everything was bad. I went down to the restaurant for Sunday dinner. Bad. I left it on my plate. Make sure to always ask for salt to be brought to your room. I did room service every morning. All milk for tea or coffee is skim. Yuck. They don't even carry full fat milk, none-the -less half and half.||The internet did not connect and that was horrible for me because I was there working.||Now it was walking distance from the train station, but everything is walking distance from the train station. Laundromat down the street, it only takes pound coins. Five pounds to wash. Be prepared. Another 5 to dry. The front desk manager wouldn't give me pound coins. I had to walk to the Bureau De Change... twice.||I did all things Shakespeare and they are totally all worth it. There are actors there on Sunday. Cool outdoor market on the weekends.|| The manager at the front desk gives bad directions and will not give you a map unless you ask for it. ASK FOR IT.||I took an Uber down from Birmingham. I think it may have cost less than $50.||You can't miss Stratford upon Avon - you just don't need to stay here. I think everything is fine.

The hotel is in a great location, very quaint and lots of traditional features. The restaurant has a beautiful burial that dates back centuries. One point to note, there should always be in any hotel, a friendly welcome. Without doubt, one of the warmest and friendliest welcomes received from the lovely Pippa in reception. Could tell she's a 'people person' - friendly, smiling and nothing was too much trouble. A credit to the hotel!! Sure to stay here again!

The hotel was hosting my niece's wedding. We had a 2 night stay, with breakfast included. The room was clean and had great facilities. The breakfast and our pre-wedding dinner in the restaurant was fantastic. The staff throughout the hotel were extremely helpful, friendly and couldn't do enough for us, absolutely faultless! Excellent venue for wedding reception, nice room, and the outside area adjacent to the function room was reserved for wedding guests only. I can't fault anything in this hotel. I'll be returning sometime soon i hope.

We stayed for 8 nights at The White Swan hotel in Stratford upon Avon from 22 June- the staff as ever are as friendly and welcoming as ever- almost like an extension of your own family and friends circle! Everything we had asked for in the suite was there including a beautiful bottle of chilled Rose wine, and gorgeous on- site made chocolate and pistachio cookie cake with fresh berries with a welcome card complete with photo of the hotel! |We chowed to take breakfast in bed and each day were served a variety of our choices by 3 of the team, always with a smile and a quick chat!|Although we didn’t dine in st night we made use of the bar which stocks a great selection of fraught lagers, ciders and beers! Add to that an extensive wine list, premium spirit option and cocktail and spritzer list too. Non alcoholic drinks are also well catered for and there were stations throughout the ground floor offering cooling summer refreshing waters with either cucumber or citrus fruits in to refresh and keep guests and staff hydrated through the very hot days experienced during our stay.||The housekeepers were wonderful too- willing to come back when we had left the room or to clean while we were in it- we had no problem with the second option at all!||The hotel is a great place for us as we stay in 1 of their accessible rooms, every room is different so it’s well worth looking on their website for inspiration!||A huge thank you to Sol and Simon the managers , and to Thomas, Lucy, Milly, Pippa and the 2 Freya’s for making our stay so wonderful!

Yelp
I had an amazing experience at the White Swan Hotel. I was with a big school group and the staff was super helpful with our large numbers. The rooms were clean and nice. It was also a nice touch to put a Shakespeare quote outside of every room. The breakfast in the morning was also delicious! Overall, the location, staff, and hospitality of the White Swan Hotel made this a great place to spend the night.

Yelp
The White Swan is an olde worlde pub with a quaint, Tudor exterior and a cosy interior. We were impressed by the warm welcome we received on the door. Unfortunately, the rest of our experience was very mixed. My friend ordered a cream tea (on an English menu, that's tea with scones, jam and cream) and received cream that was absolutely rank. It was clearly off and smelled foul. It was replaced when we asked. My friend's mom had a latte, which by all accounts was fine, and I had a black coffee. It was a tad on the expensive side - about £1.70 for a fairly small coffee, although it did taste good. Then when we came to go, some guy shortchanged us by five quid. He very hastily gave us our change in a folder and left before we could say anything, which made us uncomfortable. He did give us the other five quid when we went after him and asked, but we were 50/50 whether it was an honest mistake. Given the nice surroundings and mostly pleasant staff, I guess I'd give it the benefit of the doubt and try it again if I was in the area.

Yelp
Our first Sunday in the U.K. and The White Swan delivered on a great Lamb roast. Wonderful atmosphere and great history surround this place, a perfect stop in our day exploring the town.

Yelp
Firstly: at least for most of the hotel you need to be in decent shape as there are multiple stairs to navigate to get to your room. However, if you are physically able to get to at least our room, you will find it a very nice room and well outfitted. Ours was interesting in that the room itself was rather cramped (though workable) but the bathroom was immense (by bathroom standards). We probably did not visit during high season, but the price was quite affordable. We also had dinner at the hotel, which was pricier, but a good meal. We don't know Stratford very well (last time we visited was by canal boat over twenty years ago) but the hotel seemed to be quite in the middle of things. The free Wi-Fi worked well.

Yelp
My wife and I are senior citizens, tourists from America. We stayed here on a Sunday night in early June 2018. We were so impressed with this hotel. We paid 79 British Pounds for a standard room with queen bed. During our week-long vacation in the UK, we stayed in 4 different hotels, and this was by far the least expensive, but in terms of quality, it was among the best of the bunch. The hotel is historic, dating back to the 1500s. The reception area suggests this history with mahagony walls similar to an old corporate board room. Hallways are attractively decorated, and our room was luxurious and beautiful. The bathroom was super modern and upscale. We had air conditioning. When we went downstairs for dinner, upon our return to the room we found a maid had been inside to turn down the sheets and leave some chocolates on the pillows. Nice. Dinner at Fullers, downstairs, was very good, with good food but even more importantly it's a way to experience the historic traditional British-inspired room decor on the main floor. The hotel has popular seating outdoors, too, either along the front sidewalk or along the side walkway. There is one downside: if you need to park your car, you must pay for a private lot or garage a block behind the hotel, which is a hassle and costs 10 to 15 pounds per day. Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. I recommend this hotel enthusiastically. One of the best hotel values you could imagine.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel, bar and restaurant is really beautiful, it has an old feel to it. Our bedroom was recently done and the bed was so comfortable.

Yelp
We were prepared to be underwhelmed. But Britain, you need to look to this chef. He sets the standard. Our first hint that the food was good was when the kids said we should ask for their Mac&Cheese recipe. Both the missus and I ordered the roasted rump of lamb. It was fantastic. Certainly 1 star Michelin quality. The menu didn't even hint that the lamb was cooked three ways! And all three were great. The waiter says the chef is new. We were glad to have him. Keep up the good work and we're sorry we're only here for one night.

Yelp
The hotel is charming, filled with history and very comfortable. Rooms well appointed and the breakfast is great! At the end our our stay one of our luggage items, a travel blanket was somehow left behind. We notified the hotel and asked for help in finding the item. While the first search didn't turn up the item, we emailed the staff again and asked for them to please search specific places in the reception area, room and closet. I'm happy to update this review as the missing item has been found and will be shipped to us.

Yelp
The rooms have all recently been renovated and are very nice. It is difficulty in Europe to find a room to sleep 3 as they always want you to buy two rooms. Here we had a sofa bed in the room so we easily fit three ( or likely 4 if necessary) in the room. The restaurant was attached and the room included breakfast.

Yelp
Lovely ambience and great staff. The rooms are beautiful and comfortable. The staff are mega helpful and polite. The choice of food on the menu is awesome and the free breakfast is really something! Great location. We came from the US and needed rest and we got it!! Definitely will return!

Yelp
I've stayed in a number of hotels in England and this one is my favorite. Staff was very friendly and helpful, the accommodations were comfortable, and the free breakfast was delicious. What I most appreciated is how the hotel blended the old and the new in a tasteful manner, which I guess is my style of hotel. I feel a little forlorn in an older "charming" building that lacks modern amenities, but I'm also turned off by hotels that are contemporary, plastic, and slick. The White Swan strikes the perfect balance. The Shakespeare quotes on each room and on the wallpaper in the rooms are a super-touch. Again, this could have been done in a tacky way, but it wasn't. Everything felt just right.

Yelp
Will appeal to the traditional shakespear hunting tourist. Very 'twee' but good food and drink. Well positioned for a quick pint sat outside on a nice day..

Yelp
Great central location and a real old world charm. Because it is such a historic building the down side is that it does have quite a pokey feel . However, the restaurant is very spacious as is the reception area and the staff are lovely, the bar is a favourite of mine and the selection of regional local bitters is very good as is the wine list and the selection of food. I have't stayed in any of the bedrooms here or used any of the conference facilities so am unable to pass comment on these. However, the rest of the hotel is great and above all the locatio (in spitting distance of central Stratford) is quite unique
