White Swan Hotel | Best places to stay in Stratford-upon-Avon

"Wood-panelled walls, beamed ceilings and roaring fires – the White Swan has been welcoming guests since 1560, although the building dates back to the mid-15th century.  Step through the door and you could almost be in one of Shakespeare’s plays; much of the Tudor touches and furniture styles have been kept in the bar, along with the ‘character’ bedrooms – those housed in the oldest part of the building. Newer rooms are less remarkable, although still extremely comfortable; after a day’s sightseeing, being able to just walk up to bed after dinner can be the biggest luxury of all. Situated right in the heart of town (which can make parking something of a challenge), the White Swan is walking distance from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and the Royal Shakespeare Company. It’s a great choice for those wanting to immerse themselves in Stratford’s history, with a buzzy, informal pub feel. " - Annabelle Thorpe

This charming hotel was full of history and within walking distance of all the Shakespeare attractions. The room was modern and clean and of a reasonable size. The booking had described the room as cosy but it certainly wasn’t cramped. The staff were mostly attentive but special mention must be made of the lovely Shunn with her sunny personality who served us at dinner and later when we were just having drinks. The only negative was that some of the bar staff could probably do with more training but we do appreciate the difficulties that the hospitality sector has experienced in getting suitably skilled staff. However, we certainly will stay again when in Stratford.

In the 7 times we've been to Stratford-upon-Avon with our students, we've stayed in a number of different places. This is our favorite! We've now stayed here three times, and we will never stay anywhere else! |The service is impeccable, the hotel is exquisite, the food is excellent, the location is matchless! |We love everything from the history of the hotel, to the incredibly well chosen Shakespeare quotes, to the lighting choices in the room, spacious bathrooms, comfortable beds, outstanding English breakfast and stellar staff! |Its quiet, within walking distance of every site, and there is nothing like dining with their great wine list, gazing on are recovered painting Shakespeare himself might have gazed on! (Every detail is flawless--the Warwickshire / Shakespeare related reading in the room, kettle for tea and coffee in the room, electrical outlets near the bed, beautiful furnishings in the room!)|We cannot wait to stay here again!!!

Stayed in one of the superior rooms, located at the front of the hotel, which was stunning. The bedroom was huge, the bed was large, there was a desk and a sofa, with a seperate small room for storing clothes (complete with wardrobe and coffee machine). The real star of the show was the bathroom which had both a huge copper bath and a shower big enough for two. Breakfast was really good quality, served in the bar. It might not be the place for an early night as it's above the bar and opposite another but both were quiet by around 11pm but it's in a great location for the centre of town and a short walk to the theatre.||It mentioned the car park being offsite, which I guess technically it was, but I was parked less than 100m from the hotel entrance, with the car park having a foot path straight to the door, so I don't think that's a problem.||Staff were really nice (and incredibly patient, given the weird enquiries from the people in front of us checking in...) - all round an excellent experience, definitely would stay here again.

The White Swan Hotel is fantastic! From the warm welcome to the knowledgeable staff 👌, every detail made for a wonderful stay. The property is remarkably clean, bright, and fresh—especially impressive given its origins in the 1590s, with some original features still intact. My room was huge and could easily be turned into a suite, with a comfortable bed and a big sofa that felt like a real treat. The bath and shower were hot with great pressure, and breakfast was nice. The location is perfect for exploring the area. The staff were a true highlight, making me feel at home throughout my stay. The only minor downside was the fish and chips being a little greasy, but that hardly takes away from the experience. If you’re looking for great value for money, I’d recommend The White Swan Hotel in a heartbeat.

My sister and I had an overnight stay here on Thursday and cannot wait to return. The hotel was charming, spotlessly clean, every member of staff we encountered were friendly and helpful big shout out to their maintenance man who obviously works hard to keep this historic building in good order and was also very helpful. We decided to have our meal there in the evening and that along with our breakfast was exceptional so their Chef is to be commended. We truly cannot find any fault with this lovely hotel.

This was our 4th stay at the White Swan and, as on previous visits, we had a very enjoyable experience. I wouldn’t normally think of making reference to comments made by another reviewer, but I really do think the most recent one I have read is extremely unfair and inaccurate. Somebody who claims only to have popped in for a drink has (poorly) rated aspects of the hotel, including rooms and cleanliness, which they cannot possibly know about. For the record, and having just stayed 3 nights, I would happily give top marks for every aspect of the hotel.

Booked 1 night in one of the character rooms. Booked direct through the hotel website and got 10% off. |We got the four poster room (103) which was amazing. Lots of history and character all around the hotel. Lovely food in the restaurant. Excellent service all round. |Would definitely stay again.

Right on the high street in a beautiful old building, this restaurant on the ground floor was the best choice to crown the end of our day trip to this lovely town! From the moment we walked in their customer service was top-notch (am an ex-hotelier, means: hard to please 😁), the food was delicious! My husband was amazed by the lamb dinner he had. My burger was juicy and balanced in flavours. Even the kids menu was so yummy that all the family members wanted to taste our two year old's margarita pizza - which he was not happy to share🤣 (I managed to get a bite and mmmmm, couldn't blame him!) The restrooms were spotless clean also, which was a relief as with two little ones on the road you are always on a hunt for decent restrooms 🫣 The staff was young but professional, very polite and child friendly. I'd wholeheartedly recommend their restaurant to everyone, who'd like to eat well in a friendly environment!

Yelp
I had an amazing experience at the White Swan Hotel. I was with a big school group and the staff was super helpful with our large numbers. The rooms were clean and nice. It was also a nice touch to put a Shakespeare quote outside of every room. The breakfast in the morning was also delicious! Overall, the location, staff, and hospitality of the White Swan Hotel made this a great place to spend the night.

Yelp
The White Swan is an olde worlde pub with a quaint, Tudor exterior and a cosy interior. We were impressed by the warm welcome we received on the door. Unfortunately, the rest of our experience was very mixed. My friend ordered a cream tea (on an English menu, that's tea with scones, jam and cream) and received cream that was absolutely rank. It was clearly off and smelled foul. It was replaced when we asked. My friend's mom had a latte, which by all accounts was fine, and I had a black coffee. It was a tad on the expensive side - about £1.70 for a fairly small coffee, although it did taste good. Then when we came to go, some guy shortchanged us by five quid. He very hastily gave us our change in a folder and left before we could say anything, which made us uncomfortable. He did give us the other five quid when we went after him and asked, but we were 50/50 whether it was an honest mistake. Given the nice surroundings and mostly pleasant staff, I guess I'd give it the benefit of the doubt and try it again if I was in the area.

Yelp
Our first Sunday in the U.K. and The White Swan delivered on a great Lamb roast. Wonderful atmosphere and great history surround this place, a perfect stop in our day exploring the town.

Yelp
Firstly: at least for most of the hotel you need to be in decent shape as there are multiple stairs to navigate to get to your room. However, if you are physically able to get to at least our room, you will find it a very nice room and well outfitted. Ours was interesting in that the room itself was rather cramped (though workable) but the bathroom was immense (by bathroom standards). We probably did not visit during high season, but the price was quite affordable. We also had dinner at the hotel, which was pricier, but a good meal. We don't know Stratford very well (last time we visited was by canal boat over twenty years ago) but the hotel seemed to be quite in the middle of things. The free Wi-Fi worked well.

Yelp
My wife and I are senior citizens, tourists from America. We stayed here on a Sunday night in early June 2018. We were so impressed with this hotel. We paid 79 British Pounds for a standard room with queen bed. During our week-long vacation in the UK, we stayed in 4 different hotels, and this was by far the least expensive, but in terms of quality, it was among the best of the bunch. The hotel is historic, dating back to the 1500s. The reception area suggests this history with mahagony walls similar to an old corporate board room. Hallways are attractively decorated, and our room was luxurious and beautiful. The bathroom was super modern and upscale. We had air conditioning. When we went downstairs for dinner, upon our return to the room we found a maid had been inside to turn down the sheets and leave some chocolates on the pillows. Nice. Dinner at Fullers, downstairs, was very good, with good food but even more importantly it's a way to experience the historic traditional British-inspired room decor on the main floor. The hotel has popular seating outdoors, too, either along the front sidewalk or along the side walkway. There is one downside: if you need to park your car, you must pay for a private lot or garage a block behind the hotel, which is a hassle and costs 10 to 15 pounds per day. Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. I recommend this hotel enthusiastically. One of the best hotel values you could imagine.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel, bar and restaurant is really beautiful, it has an old feel to it. Our bedroom was recently done and the bed was so comfortable.

Yelp
We were prepared to be underwhelmed. But Britain, you need to look to this chef. He sets the standard. Our first hint that the food was good was when the kids said we should ask for their Mac&Cheese recipe. Both the missus and I ordered the roasted rump of lamb. It was fantastic. Certainly 1 star Michelin quality. The menu didn't even hint that the lamb was cooked three ways! And all three were great. The waiter says the chef is new. We were glad to have him. Keep up the good work and we're sorry we're only here for one night.

Yelp
The hotel is charming, filled with history and very comfortable. Rooms well appointed and the breakfast is great! At the end our our stay one of our luggage items, a travel blanket was somehow left behind. We notified the hotel and asked for help in finding the item. While the first search didn't turn up the item, we emailed the staff again and asked for them to please search specific places in the reception area, room and closet. I'm happy to update this review as the missing item has been found and will be shipped to us.

Yelp
The rooms have all recently been renovated and are very nice. It is difficulty in Europe to find a room to sleep 3 as they always want you to buy two rooms. Here we had a sofa bed in the room so we easily fit three ( or likely 4 if necessary) in the room. The restaurant was attached and the room included breakfast.

Yelp
Lovely ambience and great staff. The rooms are beautiful and comfortable. The staff are mega helpful and polite. The choice of food on the menu is awesome and the free breakfast is really something! Great location. We came from the US and needed rest and we got it!! Definitely will return!

Yelp
I've stayed in a number of hotels in England and this one is my favorite. Staff was very friendly and helpful, the accommodations were comfortable, and the free breakfast was delicious. What I most appreciated is how the hotel blended the old and the new in a tasteful manner, which I guess is my style of hotel. I feel a little forlorn in an older "charming" building that lacks modern amenities, but I'm also turned off by hotels that are contemporary, plastic, and slick. The White Swan strikes the perfect balance. The Shakespeare quotes on each room and on the wallpaper in the rooms are a super-touch. Again, this could have been done in a tacky way, but it wasn't. Everything felt just right.

Yelp
Will appeal to the traditional shakespear hunting tourist. Very 'twee' but good food and drink. Well positioned for a quick pint sat outside on a nice day..

Yelp
Great central location and a real old world charm. Because it is such a historic building the down side is that it does have quite a pokey feel . However, the restaurant is very spacious as is the reception area and the staff are lovely, the bar is a favourite of mine and the selection of regional local bitters is very good as is the wine list and the selection of food. I have't stayed in any of the bedrooms here or used any of the conference facilities so am unable to pass comment on these. However, the rest of the hotel is great and above all the locatio (in spitting distance of central Stratford) is quite unique
