Incredible and historic beauty. You are blessed if you can enjoy just one meal here. The brunch buffet is huge, located in several rooms and on two floors. Highly recommend coming here for a special occasion. They have events and dining for all price points. Check out the ghost bar on the 3rd floor and definitely take the elevator. Even thif second floor bathroom is beautiful.

Our server, Riley, was absolutely phenomenal. She made us feel extremely welcome for our first visit to the Whitney, and explained the brunch service and mansion tour so we didn’t feel out of place. I cannot say enough about how friendly, graceful, and knowledgeable she was! Riley made my birthday brunch feel extra special. The food was excellent, and the staff explained any dishes I wasn’t familiar with. The pianist was wonderful, and set a classy yet convivial tone for our brunch. The mansion itself was stunning, and well kept. I loved being able to explore the floors between our courses and admire the architecture and artwork. The garden and grounds were beautiful of course, and was the perfect way to conclude our visit. We will most definitely be returning!

This was the best Beef Wellington I’ve had so far—much better than the one I tried in Vegas. The restaurant is upscale and the ambiance is absolutely wonderful, with live piano music and a beautifully preserved historic setting. The staff were incredibly friendly, helpful, and welcoming. I enjoyed the bread and Brussels sprouts as starters, and the carrot cake for dessert was also a highlight. Our server, Hailey, was fantastic—she even gave our group a tour, which made the evening a truly memorable experience.

Celebrated my husband’s birthday here and our experience was exceptional! The mansion is so beautiful and rich in history. We came in 10 mins early so we couldn’t be seated yet, but the nice young lady at the front informed us we can go to the Ghost Bar or tour the mansion while we wait. We were seated by the window (which I hoped they would and they did), the table had a flower vase with a beautiful rose and a custom menu with a greeting for my husband. That was a really nice and thoughtful touch which made him feel so special. The food was amazing, especially the Seafood Sauté! The vibe was great, it really feels fancy but not intimidating, especially with live piano music. I also put in a request if they could put a small candle on the dessert so my husband could blow a birthday candle, and they did. The pianist played “Happy Birthday” as the dessert makes its way to our table. We were also given 2 glasses of celebratory drink on the house. I would also like to commend our server, TK, for being attentive and accommodating. He recommended us the perfect wine pairing for some of the dish we ordered. I asked if I could keep the custom menu as a souvenir and he had it rolled neatly for us. 10/10 experience for sure ❤️

Google
Beautiful place! The service was excellent. We did the tea, which, while good, it was odd that we could not select a flavor. Also, one of the desserts was stale but overall excellent experience. Valet parking is worth the $10 to avoid driving around for a spot.

Google
Dined here on my birthday and it was the most unique dining experiences I’ve ever had. I’ll never forget it. The Filet Mignon was phenomenal. It was cooked perfectly and the mashed potatoes were incredible. I can’t remember the last time I scraped my plate clean at a restaurant. I also loved the Whitney Carrot Cake and the Crème Brûlée! My boyfriend ordered the Whitney Brick Chicken and he said he really liked it. The pianist played happy birthday for me as they brought out my desserts. It was so unique and so beautiful. We got to walk around the building afterward and that was a huge treat! So stunning! Cannot wait to come back and have drinks at the Ghost Bar upstairs and another meal! Would recommend to anyone for a special birthday/special occasion meal!

My now wife and I planned a wedding here. 2 weeks before the big date. Samantha and her team didn't miss a beat. We had 36 people and everyone left with a great memory. Had our ceremony at Grand Circus prior. Great place, highly recommend.

A company party event in a semi private room, then "ghost hunting tour". I chose the beef Wellington, then for the dessert mini brownies and cheese cake. Everything was absolutely delicious!! Their margaritas are really good.

Yelp
I had a great time with my friends here! The building was beautiful, our tea was brewed perfectly, and the portions of food that we recieved were just right. I also wanted to mention that we LOVED our server Ally, she was so sweet and attentive- we could not have asked for a better server! If you love good snacks, sweets, and historic and historic buildings I really reccomended coming here for their high tea.

Yelp
Let me start by saying that I was very excited to have dinner here with my girlfriends...it was girls night out at the Whitney! Service and ambiance - the building is historical and beautiful. It's separated into multiple areas, which makes for a more intimate environment. Our server gave us a little of the Whitney's history and seemed to really enjoy her job. Food - The actual food service was SLOW. There was over an hour between the first and second courses. I expected a little more from a restaurant of this caliber. What do i mean by that? The caeser salad should have been prepared with shaved parmesan instead of grated (you know, like the kind younput on spaghetti?), I did like the fact that you could add fresh anchovies though. My friend ordered the beef wellington and really enjoyed it. Another friend and I ordered the beef short rib and while the short rib was cooked very nicely, the vegetables served with it were under cooked and rather hard/crunchy. My other friend ordered the grouper and ended up sending it back because it smelled fishy. The manager was very apologetic and offered to replace it, so she tried the vegetable risotto. That was also unsatisfactory...the rice was underdone/al dente and the overall dish was flavorless. Once again, the manager was very apologetic and offered to make it right. I think most of her meal ended up being comped. There chocolate caramel tarte was good, a little rich, but quite tasty. So...while the service was good and the ambiance was nice, we all could have much tastier meals and spent quite a bit less money. We had considered coming back for tea or brunch prior to our meals being served, but I doubt that will happen.

Yelp
This restaurant is of historical significance to the Detroit area. The design and history of this former home built in the 1800s is very remarkable. With the care and preservation of this space, I was very excited about an evening out with my girlfriends. The menu is relatively simple...there are not many options. But, there is certainly one of everything. I had a salad of which they only offer a Caesar and tomato and mozzarella salad. The bread basket was over hyped and it was interesting but not warm. I ordered the market catch fish for the day which was grouper. I was very surprised that this would be offered at such a fine establishment. The fish lacked flavor and smelled extremely fishy. The manager did come to the table and offered to provide something else while stating that it is a clean tasting fish. I eat a variety of fish leaning into those that are more complex. I've been around grouper and this fish was certainly not fresh. I did take him up on the offer for something else and ordered the risotto. The risotto was served room temperature, the grains were hard and the it completely lacked flavor. I was going to keep the dish and not say anything but the manager did come back to the table. He asked how was the dish and I did let him know. He once again stated that this is how the chef prepares it. Which I found really odd. I also heard the table behind me return the fish they ordered as well. Additionally, it took nearly 70 minutes for our entrees to make it to the table in a restaurant that was very densely populated. I ordered the summer vegetable soup and it was essentially navy bean soup which last time I checked was not really mixed vegetables as presented on the menu. While friendly the service was not great. My friend asked for lemons twice and it took nearly one hour for them to arrive. I ordered the key lime pie and it was just okay. The slice was very small for the price point and was just okay. All of my able shared that they are okay with never dining here again. I might would give it one more try. But clearly there are issues in the kitchen that need to be resolved. If this is the Chef's style perhaps it's time to find a chef that will complement the grandeur of the restaurant by serving remarkable food. The two is for the friendliness of the staff and the ambiance of the restaurant. The piano playing during dinner was a very nice touch. The food would be rated a 0 if possible.

Yelp
The Whitney for my birthday this visit. Incredible ambience and delicious food with an after dinner espresso martini in the ghost bar for dessert! Loved it all!!!

Yelp
We'd heard this place is nice. It's beyond that. Nicest venue in the Detroit area in my opinion. From a friendly greeting from valet parking, to host, seating, and service. It was wonderful. This is a 130 year-old mansion with numerous rooms on three levels. Perfect for special occasions or date night. If it's your first time here, they offer a free guided historical tour (do tip) and we'd recommend that. Ghost bar on third floor is cool. We were seated in the formal dining room. It was wonderful. There is a secret room off to the side here. See if you can find it. Service was perfect. Maddie gets an A+ for sure. Staff is obviously very well trained. A very well managed place. Manager stopped by twice. Nice guy. Very professional. We had the Beef Wellington. It was delicious. Nice portions too. Sides and bread were delicious too. Prices are reasonable for what they deliver. Enter off Woodward. Drive slowly - easy to miss the entrance. Use valet as other parking costs as much in area. Very happy we visited this spot. I hear Sunday brunch is fantastic. We'll be back.

Yelp
The Whitney is a Detroit Icon. The ambiance is incredible. The service impeccable. The food is consistently delicious. The Beef Wellington is a must! Michael and I had our wedding here. It was lovely!

Yelp
Where to begin. The good: The building is beautiful, although in some disrepair. The food was OK, but no where near the level to demand the prices being charged. Our waiter was nice, but not to the fine dining level I believe is required at an establishment like The Whitney. He brought the wrong wine and was difficult to understand and the term "Okie Dokey" should be outlawed at a time dining restaurant. The Ghost Bar was seriously lacking in liquor selections as well. Wellington - Good, but lack a little of flavor and execution as much of mine did not seem to have any duxelles. Lobster bisque - Slightly fishy flavor, but a nice punch of sherry coming through on the end. It was a good effort. Trio - The shrimp cocktail was woefully lacking any flavor. The steak was probably the best part of our meal and was very tasty as a cold preparation. Crostini - While the topping has decent flavor, the bread was awful. It is as if they prepped all of them ahead of time and then threw the whole dish in the fridge; cold stale, rubbery bread. Carrot Cake - It was very good, but still in the end a carrot cake. It was a loooong dinner as well. 3 hours for dinner is absurd. While I'm glad I went to see the building, I would not go back at this service level or at this quality of food. 4 for dinner was $550.

Yelp
This review is for the High Tea only Had the High Tea with my daughter for a Mother's Day celebration. I love the Whitney for the decor and the history!!! Such a beautiful story to still have in Detroit Having said that....I wouldn't do the High Tea again. We started with tea, of course and a weak mimosa...only one was offered. And a good scone each. A 1/2 hour later...we got a small squirt of whipped cream with 4 berries and a splash of granola. It was good. Almost AN HOUR later....we got a 3 tiered tray with the cute little sandwich and pastries. They were cute. And tastes good. But absolutely not worth the $49.00 and the HOUR wait for them. No thank you. My daughter and I talked and talked and ended up just drinking water while we waited. We were never offered another mimosa and there's only so much tea you can drink I wouldn't suggest it and I wouldn't go to the High Tea again

Yelp
I just don't get the hype. The building is beautiful, the service is good, the atmosphere is special but the food could not be more average and overpriced for the quality. I went with a friend to try the lunch menu they offer. What a disappointment. She is a vegetarian and had tried the flatbread before and didn't like it. This time she asked for the Duet and asked if she could sub the soup of the day (a white bean vegetarian soup for the lobster bisque). That was fine but the portion size of what came out wasn't just petite - it was super petite. I had the shaved prime rib sliders special. It was the most average meal ever. The meat was tough and tasteless. I won't be back for lunch for sure.

Yelp
Prepare to get your trousers knocked off! The Whitney has an elegant appearance, complete with an 1800s style appearance both inside and outside. This neo-classical building is only enhanced with the careful attention to detail inside and fantastic service. YOU WILL NEED A RESERVATION! While they do have lunch, we opted in for the afternoon tea. Though they were booked up for reservations a few days before, we dropped by and they had 2 cancellations. Thanks God, since we were in town for only a couple of days! We were underdressed but they still sat us. Multi-tiered levels of food in several phases, yet still tasty, and delicious tea too! The lemon bars especially were scrumptious! Though it's not food related, I would love to do a tour of this place in the future!

Yelp
Awesome place, awesome ambience! The service is awesome while dinning in. The service is awesome at the ghost bar until it gets busy then it takes a bit longer to get your adult beverage. There is lady that walks around and gives a historic tour and that makes the experience even better! While dining in I had the beef Wellington and it was delicious.

Yelp
Always a lovely time at the Whitney. This is one of my favorite birthday spots. The food is absolutely amazing. And they make you feel like family! We didn't have reservations, the manager heard it was my birthday and seated us right away. Our server, Raigan, made our already spectacular evening into a perfect one! And you cannot get this ambiance anywhere else. There is nothing like it. I recommend getting the three course dinner option. Also, although my meal (seafood saute) was delicious, I was very jealous of my date's meal. You must get the beef Wellington!! Just trust me in this. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!! As I have said in my previous reviews, Thursday nights they have a garden party with live music. It's absolutely a blast! Get tickets though! They sell out quickly. You used to be able to just show up. But this event is extremely popular.

Yelp
6/30/23 Zach's parents made a 7PM reservation at The Whitney. I had to dress up for this dinner, so I already assumed that it was going to be a somewhat fancy environment. The outside of The Whitney is impressive on the outside and inside. We drove there and dropped off the car to the valet guys. The fee for the valet is $10. The Whitney is a large, beautiful mansion that was turned into a restaurant. Our host and server that night was Dareius and his customer service skills was of very high quality and he was a pleasant person overall. We were seated in the music room. We each got 4 courses: 1. Hor d'oeuvres 2. Appetizer 3. Main course 4. Dessert The hor d'oeuvres trio was very cute and delicious! The first was a homemade ratatouille on a cucumber, a shrimp on cocktail sauce and then a seared beef tenderloin on crostini. After that, I had the clam chowder, to which I was initially confused because when they brought the plate, there was no soup; in the middle of the plate was the clams with cheese on top. Dareius poured the soup from a small ewer, and I watched the cheese melt into the chowder. The clam chowder itself was really good. For my main course, I got the Chilean sea bass. The shrimp and crab risotto that came with it was really good, but the fish itself was saltier than I would have liked. For dessert, I got the blackberry sorbet. It was very refreshing and not too sweet. The other dessert choices was carrot cake, lemon cake and opera cake. After dessert, Zach showed me around inside the Whitney. We walked up the grand staircase to check out the Ghost Bar. All the rooms in this mansion are beautifully paneled with all the walls and ceilings decorated with tasteful art. I didn't know that they had a garden; that's something I'll need to check out the next time I go. And they do tea time during the day, definitely need to attend to that as well. Looking forward to my next visit :)

Yelp
What a grand building! We enjoyed the atmosphere so much and were able to amble about. We went for a birthday brunch yesterday - 10 women - we were so excited. We each paid $88 for brunch and auto added gratuity for some of the worst food. Very bland, potatoes were hard as rocks, the muffins in the Eggs Benedict were so hard, we could not cut then and therefore, only ate the toppings. I was hungry when I got home and spent $88. Service was not good. Our waitress never smiled and kept reminding us that we could not self serve ourselves for mimosas or coffee. Didn't let us know about the mini dessert that came with brunch so we hiked up two flights of stairs to get Bananas Foster (this was so good!). Very disappointing.

Yelp
The Whitney was breath taking. Went there first my birthday. If you go on your birthday your bill is 50% off. But there is a trick to it. You are not actually getting 50%. What they do is they take the 50% off. Then the waitress gets a 35% gratuity put in the bill. Oh when they bring the bill after you have eaten a great meal. That's when they say we taken off the birthday discount but we added the gratuity in the bill of 35%. It was only 2 of us. My 19 year old daughter and myself. The food was delicious but it was extremely loud in the separate rooms they place you in. At times I could not hear my daughter speak. Also too if you want bread you have to pay for it. It's not free for 4 pieces of cheese bread. The waitress was nice and kind. This place is for special occasions or if you don't mind spending 250 to 275 dollars a night.

Yelp
Loved the antiquated " Ghost Bar" and it has its haunts - inventive cocktails are worth the trip , particularly around halloween, falls scape with large maple trees - giving up the Ghost so to speak , its a impressive old mansion - not far off course of a English manor house. Look fwd to returning soon , tis the season ! Small plates and hand crafted cocktails are the best !

Yelp
It's the Whitney... the building and atmosphere. Take the tour. The Beef Wellington was amazing.

Yelp
One thing about the Whitney is it is consistent, with both the high quality of food and service. Of course to do this requires high prices. While the ghost bar has lower prices at times, the Mansion Tea Service is the cheapest way to visit and enjoy the food, service, and the beauty. You should dress up for it but a few slackers were at the last one I attended. Ghost bar allows jeans but the regular wants at least business casual. You are met with the choices of mimosa or champagne (non alcoholic also). When the meal starts is is at a comfort pace. Scones and fruit courses comes out separately. The rest comes together. While the tea for the table is one choice but if you prefer another kind you can get it. As long you drink just tea or diet Coke like I do you will not pay extra cost. While this is not something you regularly, this makes a great special occasion event for a birthday, girlfriend outing, or another event. I will be back again and try to bring my best friends.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was delicious, service was wonderful- the cherry on top was Alfred's after dinner tour- we got to see the rich history and craftsmanship, you could tell he appreciates the building's past and beauty and really brought it all to life for our large party.

Yelp
I've visited for a dinner event and again for a regular old dinner date night. Both times were flawless. Parking options are easy: valet for $10, park in the paid lot across the street for $5, or pay the meters. Very easy. The estate itself is gorgeous and filled with history. I'll let you read up on that. My review is about the outstanding service and tasty food options for omnivores and vegans alike. Tony, the general manager, Daniel, our server, and Jordan, the Ghost Bar bartender were incredible. Service is top notch here and they strive to please customers. We ordered drinks at Ghost Bar prior and headed back down to the first floor for dinner. You don't need reservations, but I would recommend them. There was a vegan soup (lentil on the menu, but was swapped for vegetable) and risotto that could be veganized. Lots of seafood and meat for everyone else. Portions are fairly small. Don't plan to leave full unless you get one of the pre-fixed menus. The food was good, but the service is better. What I like about this beautiful, historic spot is that you can come for just a drink at the bar, or brunch on the weekends, dinner or a themed dinner. They offer varied experiences and I love them for that.

Yelp
Great tea time. High tea or afternoon tea. We loved the hibiscus deep red tea! We had several cups in one hour. They were that good. Three tiered plates had sandwiches and acorns at the bottom and cakes on top. Worth a try.

Yelp
Four of us showed up for Sunday Brunch, it was a beautiful mansion to drive up to! When you walk in to the foyer you are enveloped by rich wood tones, beautiful art, gorgeous tapestries and breathtaking murals. We were seated quickly and the waitress was wonderful. They offered coffee or mimosas, but I ordered a hot tea and was delivered a beautiful heated teapot with a perfectly brewed tea. The buffet selection was vast and tastefully prepared, all served in heated silver serving pans. For dessert (in addition to the delicious tarts and bonbons) they had someone making on-demand Bananas Foster upstairs, so we wandered up to indulge and it was fabulous! Everything we had was good. We all took turns exploring the mansion and the top floor bar - we would definitely go back for the brunch!

Yelp
OMG! This place is absolutely fantastic. From the service, to the ambiance, to the decor and finally the food - everything was amazing from start to finish. I have not been this stuffed in a long time - couldn't stop eating though!!! If you ever get a chance to come here for Dinner or Brunch, I highly, highly recommend The Whitney. Get yourself some reservations, as it's a very popular spot.

Yelp
3rd time visiting The Whitney - first review! This time I came with a group for the Friday evening Paranormal Tour. We arrived early so the GM suggested we join the free historic tour and even gave us a glass of champagne to enjoy while we waited - wonderful hospitality! The historic tour was fantastic. So many beautiful artifacts- it's amazing that we still get to go into every room and touch everything. I guarantee the intricate wood carvings, dragon door knobs, stained glass, original light fixtures, paintings, and historic furniture will be behind ropes or shields for preservation in the near future. As part of our $40 tour we received a "witching hour" drink and apps. The drink was made with white blossom vodka and the apps were Beef Wellington (yum!) and spinach pies. The unique aspect of our tour was that we got to go inside the Carriage house - definitely not maintained and dilapidated. I guess that adds to the element of spookiness during a paranormal tour. I LOVE this place, so I'm considering becoming a social member to ensure this historic gem remains standing for many more generations - the perks are nice too! Please go for dinner, a drink at the Ghost Bar, a tour or an event - you won't regret it!

Yelp
Amazing experience! Christine was an amazing server that made the experience even more amazing. Wonderful food. Great wine list. Wonderful music creates a welcoming ambience.

Yelp
So this place is beautiful! The ambiance is absolutely romantic and nice for a special date! The service was outstanding. The guy who was serving our table was very knowledgeable of the history of the place and was very generous in explaining about the beautiful details of the place, we really appreciated it! But I am giving this place a 3 because the food was not up to the expectations at all! The food lacked flavor and was very bland in general! The appetizer trio wasn't all that, the Cesar salad tasted like something you would eat at a Coney Island not a 5 star restaurant and the my sauted seafood Cuscos meal was very bland and the shrimp wasn't done right! Place was beautiful, service was amazing but food was mediocre for a fancy restaurant like that!
google avatar

Lindsay G.

Yelp
Fantastic experience and gorgeous ambiance with unique architecture and history! We greatly enjoyed our elegant Sunday Tea Tony, the manager, along with the entire staff, was extremely hospitable and Tony entertained and enthused us with his stories of the 'paranormal' activity! The Grand Premiere Tea was a culinary experience of a lifetime. I cannot wait to come back for their dinner service. Also, be sure to check out their PPSC program, which includes a complimentary surf&turf birthday dinner (almost the value of the membership), $25 dollar gift card, 10% off all dining, $20 off bottles of wine $50 or more, VIP reservations, and 2 complimentary member events... totally worth it!!

Yelp
had the 3 course meal, i liked the starter it was basic and easy food, loved the sauce on the shrimp specifically. The lobster bisque was really good, fun presentation and the beef Wellington was better than the one I had in London at Gordon Ramseys restaurant, less mushrooms on it maybe? still amazing and good sauce. service was great and everyone was cheerful and the ambience was also just sooooo pretty, definitely worth the date night! only struggle of the night was the parking garage haha

Yelp
Made a reservation for their Saturday afternoon tea for two people. As soon as you enter the main entrance, you are asked to check-in, then given a mimosa plus free reign of the interior. Love the interior as well as the artwork in the rooms, which was a nice way to spend time before the reservation. The entire meal is $49 per person, which includes the aforementioned mimosa, a pot of tea, muffin, scone, strawberries and cream, canapes, and dessert. One disappointment - the tea is already preselected and waiting to be poured once seated. I don't really like floral teas, so didn't really enjoy that part. The scone and muffin are nice, served with some whipped butter. The next course took quite some time to come around - three fresh strawberries and homemade cream. The other course took even longer, sandwiches and dessert presented in a three-tier tray. It's a lot to go through, yet most of it was well made. The entire service did take longer than expected, with all tables being served at the same time (there are many tables). Might be better during dinner.
google avatar

Stephanie A.

Yelp
Walked in to a pianist and the offer of a complimentary mimosa with a choice of 3-4 kinds of juice. Food was okay. Buffet stations with 2 kinds of eggs, bacon and 2 types of sausage, potatoes, carrots, root veggies, lobster mac n cheese (it was dry), some chicken and rice dish (yuck), French toast, prime rib and salmon, single serve caprese and shrimp cocktails. Scones and dessert were served at the table. Had to ask for coffee, then milk and sugar. Slow to refill water glasses. Bread pudding and bananas foster are served on the 2nd floor. $69/per person. Absolute, best part was the architecture. Lighting and decor were great. Will I come back? Yes for the experience not for the food.

Yelp
The Whitney is absolutely iconic. I brought my Manager here for dinner as she lives out of state and has never been to the city of Detroit before. She ordered the beef Wellington and said it was the best that she's ever had. I ordered the seafood sauté, and everything was cooked perfectly. Our waiter was so kind and attentive. After dinner, we were given a tour of the home by the mansion historian. There was Piano music being played, which made the experience even more enjoyable. I love taking people to the Whitney, because of how cool it is to see a glimpse of what craftsmanship and art looked like at that time. You should definitely treat yourself to a night here to experience THE Whitney Mansion.

Yelp
I came here for my fiancé's holiday party, and the place was absolutely gorgeous. The party was held in the ghost bar upstairs, and we were served delicious hors-d'oeuvres throughout the night. The servers were all very friendly and attentive, and even told us some spooky stories about the mansion when we asked. Overall, I had a great time. I would love to come back to visit the restaurant, or have high tea!

Yelp
The food was great but a pit pricy. For my case it was my birthday and we got a discount. Make sure it's your actual birthday and you show your ID. The service was friendly and quick. It's a historic place and was built in 1850s. Romantic place for a couple. They also service parties and small gatherings.

Yelp
We had our daughter's wedding at the Whitney. It was beautiful. The food was excellent. Plated dinner with an assigned staff member for each guest table. The staff was very attentive & brought guest drinks to them, so there wasn't the usual log jam at the bar that I experience at most wedding halls. Certainly, it is an upscale venue, so prices reflect it. However, the menu is absolutely divine & not the usual rainbow slick beef, dry chicken & green beans. One will not see that at the Whitney. We reserved the entire mansion, so guests could tour the beauty of all the rooms. The appetizers were just as wonderful as the dinner & a delectable dessert ended the 5 course meal. Staff was professional & happy to serve. It truly was a memorable experience. I will never return to the big wedding halls that are a factory for one of the most important dates in one's life.

Yelp
I went to The Whitney for Saturday afternoon High Tea because I had never been there and figured that might be a less expensive way to go. It was very good, but you are definitely paying more for the experience than for the food. I assumed that we would be served multiple kinds of tea, but it seems that they pick one flavor for the day and that's what everyone gets. We had a hibiscus blend and it was absolutely delicious! There were multiple courses of small foods and everything was very good. It's a beautiful building and the architecture (inside and out) is gorgeous. All in all, I had a very good afternoon and, while it's not something I would necessarily do on the regular, I'm very glad I went.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing food. We got the 3 course which I feel is the way to go. Excellent service as expected but they go beyond to give you the best experience. There is no doubt about the extravagant ambiance and I feel I learn something new about the history of The Whitney every time I visit. If you are a steak lover, the beef Wellington is what you should be ordering. The Halibut was absolutely delicious. The bread basket was worth the calories for sure. Thank you Whitney staff for a wonderful evening!

Yelp
Went for my birthday. You get a significant discount but you have to ask your server and you have to have ID, only on your actual birthday. Great way to try this place out. The atmosphere is nice, like an old farmhouse albeit a nice one. Check it out!

Yelp
We stopped at the Whitney before going to the theatre, for a cocktail and some appetizers. The bartender was very helpful and considerate, he understood that we had a time constraint. We chose an Angus steak tidbit appetizer that was excellent, cooked perfectly and very tender. The cauliflower appetizer was fresh and seasoned beautifully. The GM greeted us and invited us to return with more time to explore and enjoy the history of this stunning building. We will definitely return

Yelp
I went to the Whitney for Valentines day! The place is absolutely beautiful! We had drinks at the Ghost bar before dinner as we arrived early. They offer a tour that I completely enjoyed that details the history of the mansion. The food was delicious and our waiter even shared some historical facts about the Whitney.

Yelp
I took my mom here today to enjoy their tea service. This was my first time at the Whitney and it was very special. I have been wanting to visit this historical mansion/landmark for a long time. Completed in 1894, it is said that Thomas Edison designed some of the lighting! There are multiple floors and dining rooms, and the Ghost Bar on the top floor. (The mansion is rumored to be haunted.) I love tea and it's such a treat to experience a tea service. When we entered, we were greeted with mimosas. We were seated by a large window and we loved having the view. Excellent service. Debra was our server and she was very attentive and wonderful! We started with delicious scones with raspberry preserves and Chantilly cream. The cream was amazing! Then we were given strawberries and double cream. My strawberries were very large and delicious. Next we were given the little sandwiches you think of when you think of high tea. We had four different sandwiches: cucumber and cream cheese, egg salad, roast beef and Swiss with horseradish cream, and smoked salmon on pumpernickel. We also enjoyed apple and Gruyère cheese puffs, and cherry and chicken in a wonton cup. For dessert, we had a variety of treats, including macaroons and truffles. The tea was a delicious seasonal black tea, and I had fresh cream with it. Gorgeous setting and ambience. There is a pianist playing live music too. Easy valet parking available for $10. Today was a lovely day that I will always remember.

Yelp
The Whitney is beautiful. Our server was kind, helpful and generous. The food was fine. It was my first beef Wellington, and that was seasoned nicely. Everything else was good, but not exciting. My husband had a filet. He had the four course. The appetizers were fine. The desserts were fine. At the end, we said we were there for the experience. That's just not what you want at those prices.

Yelp
This was our first visit on our 10th wedding anniversary. I would characterize our experience as... awkward. The valet was past the entrance. No one opened my door - ok fine, need training - and not knowing where the entrance was, we had to ask. And then trudge through snow back to the front of the building. We were seated in the 1st floor Music room. Tapestries, carved woodwork, windows into Woodward, beautiful! Also cold! Glad I did not check my coat Dinner was... fine. I had the Caesar, and the Salmon with couscous. The lettuce in the Caesar was close to limp but fortunately more greens than ribs. The dressing - on the side, thank you!! - was delicious. The salmon was wonderful, with a wedge of orange to squeeze. The veg and couscous accompanying were cold and disappointing. Hubs had the Beef Wellington, which he enjoyed. His calamari appetizer was dinner-portioned and not crispy. Service was impeccable. We moved to The Ghost Bar for dessert. The cream puff was amazing and mostly because the puff was fresh and put together right before service so crisp, not soggy. The fudge was hot and delicious. The Lemon cake was okay with a bit of raspberry puree. The mascarpone filling was a bit rich for me. Napkins? We had to ask. All told, we spent approximately $300. We understand that most of this will go to the upkeep of the house, which is true gem. I'm glad we can say we've been, I doubt we'll return.

Yelp
Disappointed with this long time high end restaurant. I ordered the beef wellington and I was extremely disappointed, cooked to wrong temperature, very very small portion and the pastry was doughy and chewy. Maybe they were just having an off night, but I don't think I will be back when there are so many new and exciting restaurants opening in Detroit.

Yelp
Came here for the first time on Christmas Eve. I was really excited to go, but left feeling underwhelmed. The ambiance was wonderful. Beautiful, historic mansion all dressed up for the holidays, live music, very festive. No complaints there. Valet parking is $10, which isn't bad, considering Henry Ford Hospital up the street charges $8. But I digress. The service was ok. Not as attentive as I would expect from a fancy restaurant, though. The food was good, but didn't blow my mind in any way. I'd call it average, and the portions are small. Really small. Like my boys were hungry again two hours later. I expect more food for those prices. My favorite part of the meal was the key lime pie that I had for dessert. Well, at least I can say that I've tried this place now.

Yelp
This was my first visit to the Whitney. I passed by this magnificent building for years without stepping inside. When tickets to a garden party became available my daughter purchased our tickets. Knowing that this is a more exclusive event we dressed in a very appropriate way. We were met at the gate by a gracious host who showed us into the outside garden area. We were surrounded by thriving gardens and to the sweet sounds of a band. The waitstaff was attentive but not overbearing. Our beverages were served promptly. We ordered small plates from the menu. Our order consisted of 3 dishes that we eagerly shared. Each one was delicious. The risotto was cooked perfectly. The pop chop was tender and delicious. Our mushroom snd asparagus was not over powering on the plate but well balanced with the risotto. Before we exited the establishment we went inside to use the restrooms. The interior is overwhelmingly beautiful. Most rooms are filled with dining tables but the classical beauty is still the main decor. We found out that you can have tours of this historical building, which I intend to take advantage of next time. For there will be a next time for sure. If you are thinking of experiencing this grand, historical restaurant know that excellence is its main theme and you will be treated royally when you visit.

Yelp
This place is amazing! So before you go on and read this I will let you know right now this is gonna be a novel because I have a lot of great things to say about this place and ALOT of pictures to upload for this place, this is the FANCIEST restaurant I have EVER been to. So this place was built in the 1800s by David Whitney Jr. and it became a restaurant in 1986. This place is very beautiful and Very amazing, it's more than just a restaurant, it's a historic house and site. The inside of the house is made of silk, jasper, crystal and marble. Each room inside the restaurant/house is a dining hall and they use the fanciest of plates, silverware as well as fancy lighting and cups. There is a piano player on each floor of this house (3 floors) and he plays very beautiful classical music throughout the night. So while waiting for our reservation we decided to head up to the 3rd floor and hit up the Ghost Bar (which is open 4-8pm on Sundays) and we sat down and had quite a few cocktails, which had an Old Fashioned, Manhattan and a Tom Collins and the bartender, Jordan, was phenomenal, this man made the night fun and awesome, he gave us some history on the house, we were just talking about Bourbons and Whiskeys we liked. All in all he was a great time and a great guy to know, he was truly an amazing person. Once our time was up and we headed downstairs for our dinner reservations (which is quite a walk) we got seated in one of the dining halls that used to be a Gathering room for guests who, when they entered, came to this room first to meet with Mr Whitney. Anyways, we were seated by a window that got a great view of the patio and we were close to the piano player which was amazing to have that going on as well as everything else. So we ordered our food and then got to sit back for a bit and just enjoy the room, music and the ambience of everything in our site which was truly amazing. My wife ordered the Filet Mignon and I ordered the Beef Wellington. Now when you order your entree it's automatically a four course meal, so the first course comes with a Hors D' Oeuvres Trio which is housemade Ratatouille with Cucumber Chip, shrimp with Cocktail sauce, seared beef tenderloin on crostini with chimichurri and Manchego cheese. All of that was amazingly delicious and it was nice to try something different. The 2nd course was the choice between a Soup, salad or a Lentil, we both chose the New England Clam Chowder which was VERY delicious, it was thick, creamy and tasted homemade I liked the thick chunks it had inside, it just made it well worth every bite. The 3rd course was your main course. Now I had the Beef Wellington and it was just ok, I have never eaten it before so if that is what it was supposed to taste like then that's fine but I just feel like the breading was a little soggy and the meat wasn't flavored very well. All I can say is that it wasn't for me. Now my wife's Filet Mignon was excellent, very well seared, cooked and flavored perfectly, it was tender, juicy and had lots of flavoring too it, it was perfect!! She also ordered a lobster tail with it and it too was amazing, the buttering was perfect and taste was not fishy at all. Then we had our desserts, I can not remember what it was called but it was very sweet and glazed with Maple Syrup just perfect. My wife's dessert was brought out on a silver platter and the piano man played the Happy Birthday song while they were bringing it out, it was such an amazing experience that she got to feel and they gave her a souvenir menu as a keepsake which was really cool. Afterwards we were able to book a tour with a historian who we kept calling the "Ghost" lady lol because she really knew her stuff about this building and we got the history on all three floors of this place and the tour was absolutely free. In Conclusion this place is worth the visit because you will be amazed on the architecture, history, food, the company and the tour. Just make sure to get reservations and give it about 3 hours cause with the Ghost Bar, the Dining Experience and the Tour that's about how long it will be which all worth it
