Wildebeest

"Set in the heart of a pretty village and fronted by an attractive terrace, this former pub is now a laid-back restaurant. Modern menus range from a great value daily selection to an ambitious à la carte and an inventive tasting menu, and the refined, colourful dishes blend many ingredients to create pleasing contrasts of flavour." - Michelin Inspector

Fantastic location for truly wonderful food and exceptional service. The food is perfect and obviously of the highest quality. Service was quick, attentive and welcoming. Beautiful dining room with every little detail thought of. Loved the gluggle jugs for water! Everything from the fresh bread rolls to the thinnest pastry on desert was just perfect!

This is a super restaurant with fantastic food. We enjoyed a family dinner here and honestly can’t praise it enough. When you order, you’re able to choose from various menus on your table (some of which are very good value). The service speed for food and drinks was perfect for the occasion and the staff were really friendly. I had the Roots menu, which was honestly amazing and such great value. The filet of beef was just exquisite! Others on my table also really enjoyed the venison starter, the chicken liver parfait and the banoffee soufflé. We will absolutely be returning to this restaurant and would recommend to all. I think the meal I had could have been star worthy - it was definitely on par, if not better than, other starred restaurants in the area.

What a wonderful place! I first saw the restaurant come up on Instagram and thought it all looked so lovely so we decided to book and wow it was amazing food was super delicious and all of the staff were supper happy to help and very polite 😁I don't think I have ever eaten a meal that was so beautifully plated that tasted so amazing. Definitely a very special place❤️

Really excellent food. We had the menu-du-jour which was amazing value. Very tempted by the other dishes so we will be back.

After reading reviews, I had high expectations, but unfortunately reality fell short. The restaurant car park was very busy on a Sunday afternoon, so much so, some cars had to park on the path (be aware you may not be able to park in the restaurant car park). The venue is beautiful, the restaurant is classy but not over fussy, you feel immediately comfortable. We were sat at the table and ordered the set menu at £32 per person for 2 courses, we decided to have the mackerel, road beef roast dinner and the salted caramel sponge. The mackerel was beautifully presented but there were 9 bones, aware this isnt easy to de-bone but this is possible if you take your time. I mentioned it to the server and she said she would tell the chef. The roast beef was the star of the show, super soft, cooked perfectly but that was overshadowed but the amount of salt on everything, the veg in the pot was un creative and the larger pieces of cauliflower were undercooked. The salted caramel after the heavily salted main course was a big miss, I didn’t enjoy it, perhaps with a different main it would have been enjoyable. Was really hoping this was going to be brilliant, on our first visit it simply wasn’t.

Wonderful evening and excellent tasting menu. Service was exceptional and the wine list was fab. Allergy alternatives were well thought out and straight forward!

We had an excellent lunchtime taster menu with the accompanying wine flight. The food was cooked to perfection, the duck main was absolutely delicious. Service was fantastic too, really friendly and able to answer any questions about the menu. A little explanation of each wine pairing would have been nice, i.e. where it came from and why it was chosen to match the dish. It certainly didn't ruin our experience, but it would definitely have been a nice touch. Definitely recommend this place though!

We spontaneously popped in to the Wildebeest for a drink on our way back from Norwich. It is all very well maintained with a nice seating area outside to enjoy the weather. The choice of beer was poor but the good service and nice environment made up for it. We will probably be back again.

Yelp
As you leave Norwich into the wilderness there emerged the Wildebeest. Good car parking but looks like need to book for a meal. Great choice of food on fixed day menu plus good beer and wine. My ribeye perfect and plenty of mussels as starter. Filled up quite quickly and served from 6-8 but we stayed till after 9 as did plenty of others. 3AA rosette so top restaurant and moderately high prices.

Yelp
I absolutely love when staying with family and/or friends when travelling and they take you for meals at the local hot spots in their hometown. Ever the open minded traveller (and food lover) when I found out that I would be visiting the Wildebeest Arms a local popular gastropub run by a top local chef, I was excited! My excitement extended to elation when I learned that instead of Sunday brunch, Britts tend to enjoy something called Sunday Lunch, which is served in the early afternoon and most typically involves you consuming the traditional meal of roast beef with Yorkshire pudding - OMG! So take it from this Canadian, back home - in Toronto, there are a lot of places that offer a Roast Beef dinner, specifically Irish/English pubs, and you know what - they do alright by the tradition, but, more often than not, you're getting something overcooked and just missing a soul. I've never had authentic British cuisine before, and say what you want about it... but it's hearty, it's seasonal, it's delicious and just feels good! The Roast dinner/lunch special was about 20GBP if memory serves so in CAD $ that's about $35. Everything was incredibly tasty and cooked perfectly, however, some members of our party noted that sections of their beef was a touch over cooked. On the other hand, my order was perfection, my only complaint - and maybe it's the glutton in me, but the serving I received was much smaller than that of others at the table. I was a tad disappointed about this since it was the part of the meal I enjoyed the most. The size of my meat (pause for a laugh) aside, the entire meal including the YSP (Yorkshire puds), the potatoes and root veggies were all on point and cooked masterfully! I was feeling peckish still at the conclusion of my meal and somehow got talked into ordering another UK seasonal favourite for dessert - Sticky Toffee Pudding. OMG x2, this cake is basically like a piece of dessert concrete and if I had about 25% room left before, I was properly 45% over capacity following my consumption if it. But so worth every sinful bite, especially the to die for caramel sauce the whole dish sat in.. nom nom nom nom. I can't say I'll be back in Norwich in the near future again, but if you're traveling out this way and happen upon the Wildebeest Arms on a Sunday, add it to your travel plans Eatcrest Out

Yelp
A recent Monday lunchtime in snowy conditions was still busy, a testimony to the pull of this great gastropub. Three of us lunched for £50. Gressingham duck was perfectly cooked and melted in the mouth. Roast chicken breast sounds boring but was done to perfection, with nice salty skin, and interesting accompaniment of caramelised beetroot and roast celeriac. Dessert of Tunisian orange cake and ginger ice cream was superb. Great Illy coffee too. For this sort of dining, you can't do better. The menu du jour is £14.95 (two courses), £18.50 (three course).

Yelp
3rd time. I always stop when I am in the Norwich area and they never disappoint. Brie onion tart was perfect light dinner. Another night was perfectly cooked salmon. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Definitely worth finding in Stoke Holy Cross.

Yelp
I was a regular diner at the Wildebeest a few years ago when I lived in Norfolk and was lucky enough to revisit on a recent trip: Sunday lunchtime menu, £16.95 for 2 courses and £19.95 for 3. Party of four, 2 bottles of a good un-oaked Chardonnay, light starters of pork belly with celeriac and deep-fried brie with beetroot, both served on slate(!), butternut squash and pumpkin soup (thankfully NOT on slate!) and chicken liver pate. What the heck, look at their website for examples of mains and desserts. http://www.thewildebeest.co.uk Suffice to say this is beautifully presented, excellent food - I don't think you can find a better meal in or around Norwich, and I've eaten in most. I'm so pleased the place has actually improved since I used to rave about it a few years ago!
