Best Wineries Near D.C., According to Eater Editors | Eater DC

"Billed as the only local winery with a lakefront view, Gainesville’s Winery at Sunshine Ridge Farm sits about 40 miles outside D.C. The family-run farm plants grapes, fruit, and hops to produce an array of award-winning wines (like its 2021 Chardonnay), beers, and ciders. The scenic setting right on Manassas Lake lends well to frequent live music, comedy shows, and movie nights, with rotating food trucks serving everything from bratwurst to tacos. Open Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. and until 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturday for all ages 16 and up." - Tierney Plumb

Very nice winery, they have a beautiful area right near the lake. Very spacious place inside and out. The wine is good and good service. You can bring your own snack while chilling outside and sit near the fireplace when it's cold out. Looks like they do have bands playing there as I did see the stage. I did enjoy the flights they did offer.

Google
This winery has an outstanding location alongside a lake. They have an outstanding outside picnic area but if you have kids, i.e. under 18, it's not for you as this this place is for adults only. Unfortunately they do flights instead of a tasting but before samples that we got in our flight were all excellent. Of the four my wife's favorite was a Rosé and mine was a Meritage. For people that don't drink wine they also have four ciders on tap from Cobbler Mountain and about 10 or 12 brews available. Four of the brews they have are done there and my favorite was the Midnight Harvest (stout). Finally they don't have a kitchen on site but there are some munchies available and they do regularly have food trucks.

Google
A great winery in an amazing spot for wine with a view. It’s located by the water with plenty of outdoor seating. The wine was good and the service was friendly and very helpful. They offer flights which make it easy to find something you like. Codie did a great job on welcoming us and advising us on the drink options from wine, beer, cider and food. Thanks to Nikki who also took care of us at our table.

Google
NO WONDER THE PARKING LOT IS EMPTY. NO KIDS ALLOWED. We came from out of town with family with multiple kids including my 3 YO and 5 MO. We were NO ALLOWED to be here. As we were leaving we had to tell multiple cars pulling in WITH KIDS to hold off taking the kids out because they are not welcome Such a waste of space not allowing children to play, laugh and have a blast here. Highly recommend 2 Silos and The Farm. Multiple Playgrounds and LOTS of happy families! Good luck staying in business.

Google
There are picnic tables, a variety of drinks and some snacks to nosh on as well as a food truck. The outdoor section is dog friendly and there were water bowls for my fur covered family member. It is peaceful, a great getaway. Don’t get me wrong, I love kids but I can’t tell you how often I have gone somewhere and parents were getting sloshed while their kids run wild. It is a wonderful respite to go somewhere that only allows adults. We had a wine flight but the ciders were deliciously dangerous.😋 There was a small clothing/accessories boutique and a driving range if you want to hit some golf balls. This might be my new favorite place.

Google
Came here for the first time yesterday, and was blown away that I had never heard of this place! Absolutely beautiful location on the water with tons of seating, activities (golf & corn hole), live music, and a decent selection of beer/ciders/wine. As other reviews have mentioned, it is NOT kid friendly. It was rather refreshing to be at a brewery/winery without kids screaming and running around. I get this is frustrating to some people, but there are hundreds of other place in Nova that welcome children. My only complaint was how many bees there were—they were swarming around our drinks at all times and were impossible to escape. Also, tons of stink bugs the closer you get to the water. Other than that, I really enjoyed the experience & appreciate the awesome service we got. Hope to be back soon! P.S. They are dog friendly!

Google
The cider 🍺 drinks are amazing! If you’re unsure of what to get, try the flight samplers. As for the pizza, it’s one of the best pizzas 🍕 that I have ever had. I tried the supreme and it’s very flavorful. It’s baked on naan bread, so it’s thin and crispy, a first for me. The peaceful view of the lake add a cherry on top of everything.

Google
Please do your homework - yes, it's not a kid friendly winery and honestly I'm ok with that. There are plenty of kid friendly wineries so having one that isn't seems overblown by the comments in the review. The wines were great and the service was amazing. We were greeted at the entrance and the layout explained being our first visit. The music was perfect for the afternoon and food truck was spot on. The views, wine, and seating are worth the trip and we'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Had a Wonderful Time! I had an amazing time on Sunday, 7/27, at this fantastic spot! It was a real pleasure listening to Mo and Mary Mac perform live--such great entertainment! The staff was top-notch, the food and drinks were outstanding, and the scenery was absolutely beautiful. Thank you for a truly great day! BOOM BOOM

Yelp
This venue is GORGEOUS. Holy cow I could spend all day looking out over the lake while sipping some wine with a pizza. They have ample seating and something for everyone. There was a jeep event the day we came. It's very laid back and would be a great spot to hang with friends who like beer, wine, or food (and who doesn't love food?). I got a margherita pizza with a create your own wine flight. The pizza was *chefs kiss*. The wine ranged from ok to great. I didn't walk away with any bottles but their viogner and cab franc were the best in the bunch.

Yelp
Worth the 40 minute drive! We went on a rainy day, so it wasn't very busy. Love the concept -- multiple options with wine, cider, and beer stations, a little "golf house", nice views, stage area with lots of outdoor seating, and an age requirement. No small kids running around, screaming! We will definitely be back!

Yelp
This was a nice winery not too far away from the DC area. For my wine flight I had the Viognier, riesling, cabernet franc, and meritage. I liked all of the wines I tried. The inside of the building has a cozy feel and they also have live music. The view outside is lovely with a nice view of the lake. I enjoyed taking a walk outside after drinking my wines.

Yelp
This lush, green, spacious winery has the perfect touch of fall vibes and good times! There's plenty of outdoor picnic tables to have intimate conversations, greenery overlooking Lake Manassas, indoor and outdoor table seating arranges as well. We started out outside to take in the fresh fall leaves and chilly vibes, but as the sun began to set, we came inside to a cool darker atmosphere to end the night. Cider: I tried their 4 cider tastings, my favorite was the peach cobbler cider with the apple cider donut cider coming in as a close second. Wine: We also bought two bottles, a red and a white! Both delightful. I am not a fan of sweet dessert wines, and but we're simply delicious. (See pictures for the names) Food: -10/10 recommend their soft pretzel!! I'm usually only a fan of sweet pretzels but theirs was so fluffy and soft!! -charcuterie, it was ok, a good mix of cheese and grapes, nothing too special. Service: The service was quick, and attentive. I had found a purse on the floor where there was no one near the table. I told one of the cashiers, and he knew immediately which patron it belonged to! It brought a smile to my face that they pay attention and care for the customers! Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the great fall vibes which made the experience memorable!! It was a much needed winery outing, that brought big smiles to my face!

Yelp
Atmosphere 10/10! It had a huge outdoor space with picnic tables, a stage for live music, gorgeous setting with Lake Manassas as the back drop, huge outdoor deck/patio areas with tables and chairs. Just beautiful setting. Dog friendly outside area. Friendly staff in all the areas. It's a winery/brewery (tap room), and has some hard seltzer and ciders too. It had a food truck on site and get offer (inside) a charcuterie board and hot pretzel. They don't brew all the beers that are on tap think only one was theirs on Saturday (day we went). For wines and beers I'd say solid 7.5-8. My favorite wine was the cab franc. Favorite beer was a toss up blood orange was light and refreshing (not theirs), and their beer was pretty good. Day was gorgeous with the changing leaves and higher than normal temperatures. Will go again. It's tucked back behind a neighborhood near Gainesville common (where firebirds and Bjs is - less than 10-15 min away). Close to 29/66

Yelp
We absolutely love this place and it's become our go to! The staff is AMAZING and they have wine, cider, and beer to pick from. Most days they have a food truck but outside of that they have some nibbles. They welcome dogs and adults and I highly recommend!

Yelp
We went to the winery for a wedding tour. The lady giving us a tour started unprofessionally walking in the same time as us for the tour (which was only 5 minutes before the start time). We then had to wait for a golf cart as they were running behind. The entire ride she continuously was unprofessional and while driving was turning around talking. Towards the end of the tour, she was turning around talking while driving (again), turned the golf cart fast and my sister FELL out of the golf cart (THE BRIDE TO BE). She is a grown woman if that tells you anything about how fast and how hard this lady was turning the cart. My sister broke her nails, bracelet, ruined a brand new outfit and bag, and left feeling sore and bruised. While the lady did apologize, the situation never should've happened in the first place. Not to mention the venue wasn't even that good.

Yelp
Winery at Sunshine Ridge was a blast! Their vineyard is lush and green with lots of outdoor seating. The inside has two levels. I enjoyed all my wine selections and especially the Sangria frozen drink. It was perfect for a hot day. On the day we attended there was a live go-go band playing. They were awesome. The venue features a couple of outdoor games and there were two food trucks on-site. It's a beautiful space nestled next to the water so it's also perfect for photos. The venue has a total of three bar stations. The servers were sweet and helpful. It was extremely far from me and I was initially leery because you have to turn onto a strange dirt road to get there but I was pleasantly surprised. I'd definitely come here again!

Yelp
Beautiful property next to a large lake was part of this place's appeal. We came to check out the Berlin Calling band and met up with my British friend and liked the scene! The bottle of Viognier we bought was okay, which is to say, it paled in comparison to other Viognier from previous vineyards we visited. It was underaged and did not have that stainless steel crisp to it. It was just ok. Staff could be friendlier. I asked if there was a bucket of ice for our wine as it was very hot this day, but basically said no. A table near the tasting table happened to have two empty buckets and I approached and as if they knew, kindly offered me the empty bucket. I handed it to the staff and without washing the bucket just filled it with ice reluctantly... Odd, I thought and unfriendly! So while this property is beautiful, it could use better service and better wines! It needed to age a bit longer. We also tasted the Rose and that was even worst.

Yelp
Beware, as soon as you pull up, to be stunned by the incredible scenery and view. Be prepared to experience peace, good vibes, and a great experience. Their customer service is going to surpass all of your expectations, I experienced it firsthand and totally loved it. Unfortunately, I'll be back again and again and again because everything was perfect!

Yelp
Wonderful secluded place for a winery. We enjoyed the wine, along with a pretzel. Pleasant time even on a rainy day with an attractive view of Lake Manassas.

Yelp
We stopped in on the Friday afternoon before Mother's Day - for an ale tasting. We had never visited before. First off, the facility is awesome! Really nicely designed and laid out. Due to Virginia ABC laws - the wine and beer sides of the facility are separate - both for ordering and seating. There are also a couple of hard ciders available - at a third counter - located in the winery seating side of the joint. There is also a pretty awesome upstairs seating area, and a good bit of seating outside - some of which is situated on a large covered porch. It was a cool, rainy day, with a light drizzle ongoing, so we sat outside under the porch - and then later we moved inside when the rain and wind picked up. We tasted all of the brews, plus the two ciders on tap: Love Pipe Light (5.4% ABV)(2.25 stars on Untappd) Hugh Hefe (4.9% ABV)(2.0 stars on Untappd) Olde Mac (4.8% ABV)(2.25 stars on Untappd) Strawberry Fields Forever (4.6% ABV)(2.0 stars on Untappd) Heron Haze IPA (6.0% ABV)(2.0 stars on Untappd) Double Dog Dare Ya! DIPA (8.0% ABV)(2.5 stars on Untappd) Midnight Harvest Stout (4.7% ABV)(1.75 stars on Untappd) Sister Sangria Cider (5.6% ABV)(3.5 stars on Untappd) Not a fan of their current beers. Whenever we go into a new craft alcohol destination - we walk in - hoping to be wowed by the product. But this wasn't it. The beers were, as another reviewer stated - "just so-so." I agree with this. Not all of the beers are brewed on-site - apparently some are contract brewed by Beltway Brewing Co. over in Sterling, VA. I do need to come back for a wine tasting - and see how that shakes out. Overall, great venue from an ambiance perspective (located right on the edge of Lake Manassas), and friendly, nice staff. But the beer needs improvement. #TheWineryAtSunshineRidgeFarm

Yelp
Gorgeous location on a lake that feels like you're able to go forest bathing !! I was skeptical about the wine- thinking how can they brew beer and make wine... the wine was Delicious !!!!! We were shocked and pleasantly surprised. The staff is FABULOUSLY attuned to customer service, and if we're ever in the area we'll be back. Only dining a star because they have food trucks and charcuterie platters but not much else food wise although who's going to eat ?!

Yelp
Great lake view, live music and entertainment. Plenty of fire pits to hang out with friends. Food trucks offer extra food options. Good wedding venue.

Yelp
Although it was gray and rainy this place was quite large in size and most of the grounds were not accessible due to the weather. Drinks were good. I liked that they were just not a winery but they had beer and cidar as well. Live music and a large lake to view. Minimal food on premises but there was a food truck which the food was good. On a nice summer day I'm sure this place is buzzing.

Yelp
Great wine and atmosphere plus fantastic views of Lake Manassas. Definitely worth the trip

Yelp
I love this place! We went a little earlier in the day so it's not as busy. There is ample amounts of seating indoor and outdoor. I'd recommend their flights... I'm not the biggest wine person, so I got their seltzer flight. The one thing I would not recommend is their charcuterie board. For the amount and price, I cannot say that it is worth it.

Yelp
We stopped in as the first stop of our ridiculous winery party bus tour. This was a really great first stop while we had it slightly together still. This is a nice put together place with structured or even unstructured tasting experience. We opted to all do our 4 wine tastings. They give you the typical paddle for the glasses, you select your 4 wines of choice, and then you head off into the property to sit/stand/lay down/squat wherever you please on the property. The wines were pretty good. I went more white and rose directions with my choose your own adventure tasting and I really loved the rose. It was really pleasant to sip on a warm, sunny day. I also got a large pretzel. That was probably a lifesaver to scarf down that twisted bread amidst the chaos of that long long day. It was delicious and came with a mustard dipping sauce. I normally hate mustard, but I actually liked it! Sooo yum! The staff was really nice and we had some fun!
google avatar

Yelp
Winery was nice and we loved the country music by the lake. Could use a few more shade trees. Wines was nice ( Chardonnay was the favorite); nice appetizers ( cheese trays and pretzel were great); and we loved the beer samplers ( nice ales and hoppy IPAs). A little out of the way for Loudoun County and DC residents but worth the drive when they have music.

Yelp
Today was the grand opening of Sunshine Ridge Winery, with the Lake Manassas view is a must. Their wines comes from Bull Run yay! The selection is tasteful, with 3 white wines , 3 reds and a rose. They offer a tasting flight of wines as well as beer, yes I said Beer! The selection for beer is promising for those beer drinkers.
google avatar

Yelp
THE BIG: Newly open winery in Gainesville with gorgeous private view of the lake! THE BLACK AND WHITE: The crew went here on opening weekend (March 5th 2021) and Sunshine Ridge did not disappoint! It is off the road with a ton of gravel roads to get to but when you arrive, the place has a gorgeous lakeside view. If you're a Virginia wine pass holder, you get a free tasting with a purchase of a wine bottle. Other than that, they also have beers from Cedar Run Brewery to satisfy any beer cravings. THE FINAL BAMBOO: The wine tastings will set you back $12, a little pricey but a perfect place for large groups (when the pandemic ends) and a relaxing time.

Yelp
Stopped in on our way back from Shenandoah, and was looking for a vineyard not too fancy but not too casual. Main area is a two story wooden building, almost like a ski house. We got a flight of wine and a cider (peach cobbler cider was delicious!), and played games while enjoying the view. The employees were very kind and helpful. If back in the area, we will be back!

Landra B.

Yelp
Friendly staff, beautiful property, good food and delicious ciders. We will definitely visit aagain!!!

Beautiful place! So relaxing was a slow day here and we enjoyed every minute of it! Super friendly staff! Totally Recommend!!

Yelp
Great facilities/service and views of the lake. Seating was plentiful and both inside and outside available.

Yelp
love this place . excellent wine. We first ordered the flight . it was superb . Then we ordered Reisling. smooth wine . The paella trick was here . Best paella . This place is beautiful by Lake Manassas .

Yelp
Such a cute place and an awesome location on Lake Manassas. Outdoor seating is on your own, but it looks like they have firepits that can be reserved. Its definitely off the beaten path and I was second guessing myself as I wound down the gravel roads. We picked a terrible day and it rained almost all afternoon, so we didn't quite get the experience we were hoping for, but still had a blast and enjoyed sampling some of the wine and sangria. Loved the variety of different beverages that they had to try. The sangrias were both delicious. Only complaint--they don't allow outside food. I feel like most wineries let you bring in food unless they have a robust restaurant or food shop, and that's not the case here.
google avatar

Briana M.

Yelp
Definitely one of my favorite wineries I've visited in the area so far! Was a little nervous when I immediately turned onto a dirt road, but the view and property definitely makes up for it. They have a huge outdoor space that I'm sure is amazing during the summertime, but was still filled with plenty of fire pits you could cozy up to and keep warm indoors. Everyone was very friendly I really enjoyed the Chardonnay, Viognier, and Norton! We also did a cider tasting and for my first cider experience it will be pretty hard to beat! The peach cobbler cider was amazing! Only disappointing thing was the mulled wine was lukewarm

Yelp
My group of nine arrived at the winery with a confirmed reservation just for it to close for a private event. I had a reservation at this winery for my 21st birthday party. I made a reservation days before and received multiple confirmation texts for Saturday the 19th at 6 pm. On the day of the reservation, not only did I receive a message that moved our reservation up a half hour, but when I tried to call no one answered. We called multiple times with no answer. After an hour of driving, we arrived at the winery just for the place to be booked out entirely for a different event. No one was available to talk to other than the event host who apologize and told me to make sure I leave a review. This was the most frustrating experience and should've never happened. Not at all how I hope for my 21st birthday to go.

Stacey T.

Yelp
Very good wine, it's very wholesome spot I love the games great date night! Has lots of outdoor activities the river looks so beautiful the camp fire was great BEST LIVE MUSIC BUT THE SERVICE oh let me tell you girl! :) the lady at the front tried taking my man she said she liked his card.. shameful L M A O that means Laughing out loud

Yelp
wine and service was okay. Choice of Band was Not to my liking... I prefer Country. Guess it can get better since it is a new venue.....right?

Yelp
Friendly employees and great wine! Beautiful winery! Nice selection of wines. Good customer service!

Yelp
Beautiful scenery and a good variety of drink selections. Friendly staff and a food truck.

Yelp
Views and variety! Spent a lovely Sunday afternoon here with some friends. This winery is relatively new, opening up just this past March. What I love about this place is that there's something for everyone. I'll admit, I'm not a big wine drinker, but I know what I enjoy. And I enjoyed trying lots of different types of drinks. They have a bar for wine, beer, and seltzers and ciders. You can get flights to try a variety of drinks at each bar. I started with a bubbly flight with my favorite being the sunset sangria. I followed that up with a visit to the beer bar where the wonderful bartender helped me pick out a beer. I never thought I would like a sour beer, but I ended up really liking the Raspberry Ridge. Food truck was on site and the tables are nicely spaced out so we were able to really enjoy our time and the views.

Yelp
Spur of the moment decision to stop here on the way to the lake. We had our dog with us and hadn't planned to stop so we asked for a bowl of water for him and they were very accommodating. Outdoor "yard" seating was the only option because of the dog but it was fine. Picnic tables are scattered around the yard and they offer patio and indoor seating. We sampled both the wine and the beer. Next time I hope to try the cider. The view was great and BBQ from the food truck was on point!
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
I came on a Saturday early evening when there was live music. There are staff to direct you where to park on the grass. There were a few tables open. You can bring lawn chairs. The staff were nice and let you have a taste before buying glasses or bottles. They do not sell their beer in packs. There are bbq food trucks on the vicinity. There's a nice view of the water.

Yelp
I was very happy to get invited to The Winery at Sunshine Ridge Farm. The location is great, overlooking Lake Manassas. I found plenty of parking and a nice vibe, not overly full like other wineries. Staff was great and pleasant. Did I say that I found some great beer here too? Try the Sunshine Pale Ale, Midnight Harvest, or Thicc Axe Stout. If you forgot your snacks, try the Charcuterie Board and you won't be disappointed - this is the best board I have found amongst many wineries. See you soon.
google avatar

Andrew T.

Yelp
I hate to lower this review, but Sunshine Ridge has become more of a mob scene. It's nothing like the tranquility that you would expect from a winery.
google avatar

Gina S.

Yelp
Highly disappointed. We were made to sit outside because we had our dog (It was so cold and windy) but we are rule followers. We were told by two servers to go ahead and bring him in, but then the owner said "dogs were forbidden" However as the sun went down along with the temperature, we watched a dog go indoors and lay in the middle of the floor. Come to find out... it was the owners dog. We were told "I know this looks bad, but I'm the owner and I can do what I want" WHO DOES THAT? Also, if you're going to make people sit outside after advertising being dog friendly please have heaters that actually work.

Essence H.

Yelp
when we first tried to come here we did not know about no kids rule m. we had an infant and a worker ran outside to us and told us we couldn't come in. the owner never came out and spoke to us so we said ok. I came here again with a group and saw they had infants and kids under 16 allowed in. Their website says you can make a reservation and there's no exception to kids under 16 being allowed in yet the excuse I was told was that they allow infants and kids with a private reservation. If that were true no one told us that when we had our infant and it's not on their website. You can't allow your White guest to break the rules and treat the minorities differently. The wine is not good and the beer is ok. It's a nice outside place but I would rather go a place where you will be treated equally.

Meaghan R.

Yelp
The ambiance of this winery is rustic and cozy. Best place to be on a sunny day. My husband and I come here frequently and enjoy their 2020 Riesling the most! Also the charcuterie boards are wonderful. If we want to stay home and enjoy the wine, I go there and pick up bottles and charcuterie to go for date night at home. I've also hosted a company event for Christmas there- we were able to rent the whole bottom floor and outside area. It was perfect.

Yelp
The views from this winery/brewery are fantastic! I would absolutely recommend catching a sunset here if possible. Lots of outdoor space to spread out and tons of outdoor seating. Due to its proximity to the lake, they don't allow anyone under the age of 16 so keep that in mind before you go. Their in-house food options are pretty limited but so far there are always different food trucks onsite for the weekends. They post the weekend music and food truck lineup on their Instagram every week. There was a jambalaya food truck the weekend we went and their food was great! We tried all of their wines and a couple of beers. Most of their beers are sourced through Cedar Run Brewery but they do brew a few of their own in-house. We tried the Thick Axe Stout and the Sowing Oats and would highly recommend both. As far as the wine goes, they were just okay, not anything to write home about. They have 3 whites and 3 reds and a rosé and all the wine is sourced from the Bull Run Winery. I like some of Bull Run's wines so I was a little surprised how mediocre these particular wines were. Since this winery is just 2 months old at this point, they don't have a mature vineyard of their own for supply. So I'm excited for the point when they are able to start making their own wines.
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
What a great find! The grounds are beautiful. It's on a lake. It looked busy from the parking lot but plenty of picnic tables outside. Live music and if your hungry grab food from the food trucks. We went with beer. Loved their hefeweizen.

Randy M.

Yelp
Picturesque scenery. Long sprawling space. Outdoor stage. Outdoor beverage pavilion. Tons of picnic tables. Can't speak to the wines or ciders. Beers were good enough to misses. A food truck was onsite and they also have cheese plates available. A very cool venue here on the county borderline.
google avatar

Alison W.

Yelp
Such an awesome winery/brewery with gorgeous views of Lake Manassas. The venue is nice and big with many picnic tables spread out. There's food trucks and live music on the weekends. Unfortunately the beer was a let down (we tried 4) and I heard the wine isn't much better. The Hefeweizen actually tasted like dirty dish water. It was so nasty and undrinkable. The Ashley light was the best of the 4 we tried. The New England IPA and lager were just okay. The ambience totally makes up for it though. It's not kid friendly but is super dog friendly and we loved bringing the pups along. They had a stack of self serve water bowls that were very clean. I hope the beer gets better, but we will be back nonetheless!

Jody B.

Yelp
First time coming to this winery and it did not disappoin. the atmosphere is rustic comfort and the view is stunning. highly recommend the peach cobbler cider and the wine flights. the charcuterie boards (boxes) were fantastic! the perfect mix of sweet, savory, and salt. great selection of items and not a morsel left! highly recommend.

Yelp
Really nice wines and they've created a very nice atmosphere inside the winery and brewery. We were there in the winter so didn't get to explore the outdoors much, but really liked the cozy welcoming vibe of the establishment.

Yelp
Wow! Is all I can say! What a fabulous time I had with my group for our high school reunion! The winery itself is absolutely beautiful! The property and lake are gorgeous! The staff was beyond friendly, the wine and beer selections were plentiful and delicious. Highly recommend, 5 stars is not enough!
