The Wonders of Florida in 24 Museums

"The Wolfsonian-Florida International University (or Wolfsonian-FIU) is a museum, library, and research center in the heart of Miami South Beach’s Art Deco District, with a mission to “illustrate the persuasive power of art and design, to explore what it means to be modern, and to tell the story of social, political, and technological changes that have transformed our world.” Its collection is comprised of over 120,000 objects dating from 1884 to 1945, from the height of the Industrial Revolution to the end of WWII. Included in the collection are works in glass, ceramics and metal, rare books, periodicals, ephemera, works on paper, paintings, textiles, and metals. Several countries are represented here, most notably Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, the United States, Austria, Czechoslovakia, France, Hungary, Japan, and the former Soviet Union. Some popular collections are: the British Arts & Crafts movement, Dutch and Italian versions of the Art Nouveau style, American industrial design, objects and publications from world fairs, propaganda from WWI and WWII and the Spanish Civil War, New Deal graphic and decorative arts, avant-garde book design, and publications and design drawings relating to architecture. The museum was opened to the public in 1995, and has received recognition from scholars, collectors, educators, the media and visitors for its showcase of art and design as both an agent and indicator of societal and cultural change. It also supports scholarship and develops critically acclaimed exhibitions, publications, and educational programs that highlight the impact of design on the modern world." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Wolfsonian-FIU – Museum Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Zoom out. What’s this place all about? Just two blocks from Ocean Drive is the Wolfsonian-FIU, a grand Art Deco building that’s now home to a Florida International University–affiliated museum, library, and research center dedicated to the importance of art and design throughout history. A museum's permanent collection is its defining feature: How was this one? Though it's only been around since 1995, the Wolfsonian collection showcases the entire modern age of design, from the Industrial Revolution to the end of World War II. Among the nearly 180,000 pieces in the museum’s collection are paintings, textiles, furniture, industrial design objects, rare books, and magazines. There’s a lot to take in, so it’s a good thing that the museum categorizes it into a half-dozen or more exhibitions at any given time. And the exhibits keep us coming back. What can we expect? Terrific, like Cuban Caricature and Culture: The Art of Massaguer on through March 1, 2020. It displays and analyzes influential graphic artist Conrado Walter Massaguer's illustrations of women and celebrities. What did you make of the crowd? Since it’s smack in the heart of South Beach, and children under six are admitted free, don’t be surprised to see a few tiny little faces full of confusion. Early mornings are less busy; admission is free on Fridays from 6–9 p.m. On the practical tip, how were facilities? Though it’s easy to get around the space and the galleries themselves are wide open, the best place to grab a seat (if you need it) is in the museum’s gift shop-slash-coffee bar. Any guided tours worth trying? Free tours are available on Friday nights. Gift shop: obligatory, inspiring—or skip it? The Wolfsonian Design Store—which is almost an exhibition on its own, with its century-old Snead & Co. Iron Works shelving system—sells a variety of books, games, toys, kitchenware, jewelry, and other trinkets that echo the museum’s “good design is everything” theme. Is the café worth a stop, or should we just plan on going elsewhere? Technically, The Wolfsonian Design Store is actually The Wolfsonian Design Store + Coffee Bar. A smattering of tables makes a great place to catch your breath, or even sneak in a little work (there’s free Wi-Fi) to go with that fabulous latte. Any advice for the time- or attention-challenged? If you want to walk quickly, and can only hit up maybe half of the exhibitions, head for the ongoing ones, like “Americans All,” a collection of paintings, drawings, and mosaics that were intended to be turned into large-scale murals depicting the struggles of people of color during the Great Depression. “Art and Design in the Modern Age” shows how the world evolved in the century following the Industrial Revolution. And “Material and Meaning: Earthenware, Stoneware, and Porcelain” demonstrates the importance of individual material in good design." - Jennifer M. Wood

A really interesting museum. The owner collects pieces he wants to conserve from his travels across the world. The owner saves things from being demolished or thrown away and puts them in this museum. It's fascinating to see these pieces of history that would otherwise be discarded. The guide was very knowledgeable and interesting.

Metered parking just steps away from this free museum. Do watch the meter (set your phone, they do ticket in Miami). Tucked into the heart of South Beach, the Wolfsonian–FIU Museum is a gem of a cultural experience that blends history, design, and whimsy in all the best ways. From the moment you walk in, you’re transported—not just to a different place, but to different eras, worldviews, and artistic sensibilities. The World’s Fair exhibit is a standout. It’s a rare opportunity to explore the ambitious dreams of cities past, showcasing innovations, architecture, and design that once captured the world’s imagination. With artifacts ranging from dazzling city plans to nostalgic Disney ephemera and archival videos, it’s a beautiful throwback to a time when progress and fantasy went hand-in-hand. Equally compelling are the Clarke stained glass pieces - beautiful and elaborate it’s rumored to have caused the death of this Irish man—working with the minerals and pigments could have caused lead poisoning. There is a sign that tells you all about it. Another highlight is the Dust Bowl exhibit, which thoughtfully contextualizes one of America’s most difficult periods. Featuring classic films and poignant displays, it brings the desperation, resilience, and cultural memory of the 1930s into vivid focus. And don’t miss the gift shop, which feels more like a curated boutique than a museum store. Sip on a great cup of coffee while browsing through a clever selection of hysterical cards, striking necklaces, unique earrings, and design-centric books and objects. It’s the kind of place where you’ll want to linger long after your museum visit ends. All in all, the Wolfsonian is a must-visit—smart, surprising, stylish, and a bit irreverent. A refreshing cultural stop in the middle of the South Beach buzz.

If you are into Art Deco and who isn't in Miami, then this is definitely a place that you would enjoy. It takes anywhere from 1-2 hours to view, depending on your interests. The Wolfsonian building is located in the middle of South Beach and is not easily noticed when you are driving by it but when you enter, you see how large it actually is. There are 7 floors. The elevator takes you to each floor. The top floor is currently under construction to add insulation. The 3rd floor is the library and it was closed the day we went. You need an appointment to see it, which we didnt know. The first floor has the lovely gift shop and the coffee bar. Admission is free to all Florida residents. You are free to do your own self guided tour. Art lovers and artists have been very positive about the unique collection of the art deco and other collectibles from the early 1900s to the 1940s, including exhibits on the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and World War I. It also says a lot about Wolfsonian that the staff are friendly and helpful in pointing out the well-curated exhibits, and the charming gift shop and cafe. We were very impressed with the art collections and the way they were presented. This is a worthwhile museum to visit.

Free admission for Florida residents. Plan to spend a little more than an hour. 2.5 floors full of art pieces. Plenty of rare pieces from the early 1900’s to the 1940’s, history covers the Industrial Revolution, Great Depression, WWI and more. Gift shop has too many great items for purchase.

This is a great museum, in a beautiful building with well arranged internal spaces, especially the ground floor that hosts a former theater façade turned into a fountain. The museum shop and café, although small, is also very nice. Admission is just $5 per adult. However, I was slightly disappointed in my visit at how short the exhibitions were. I came back to this place after 13 years, and I was sad I couldn't see many of the collections of propaganda posters I remember.

I was so grateful to have my work on display there. The building details and art collections are so interesting. Very unique place. Very cool style. It might also have the best gift shop of any museum I have ever been to, and that says a lot. Thank you for the veteran entry fee discount. I appreciated it.
