Where to Eat in Athens, Home to the University of Georgia

"The World Famous is one of the Hull Street residents that keeps the downtown Athens Hot Corner hot. The regular menu is stacked with trendier, elegant takes on bar food, including poutine, shawarma, and pork steamed buns — if staying out late like a college student, TWF is the place to refuel. The food is only outdone by the drinks, which features original cocktails and house-made sodas, and a selection of Georgia’s best craft beer, much of which is brewed right in Athens." - Sarra Sedghi

Drinks were great. The Frito Chicken sandwiches was nice and crispy. The chicken and waffles sandwich was awesome! Only compliant would be that the fries tasted like the grease was old and needed to be changed. But overall I was glad I visited while in town.

Google
Great bar food. I definitely recommend the pork bao buns. The burger was delicious and the pretzels bite were a great appetizer.

Absolutely The Best Poutine I've ever had! Cooked and Presented Beautifully! The Cooks Should Be Proud!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Amazing Night at The World Famous! Had an awesome time at The World Famous last night! The vibe was electric, and Lily at the door was the absolute best—super friendly and welcoming, making everyone feel right at home. I tried the pretzel bites with local honey and mustard, the Chicken and Waffle Club with fries, and the huckleberry soda—all were delicious!

Google
We decided to stop by on a Friday night before a football game so it was SUPER packed but we were able to snag some seats. I got the chicken waffle sandwich and my fiance got a smashburger- both were super good and the sauce that came with the fries were DELICIOUS. We also got 2 drinks and both drinks were really well made & I especially loved the sugar rim. Aside from the food, the restaurant is decorated in a very unique way and we enjoyed looking at the decor :)

Google
Very good food, funky college town vibe. Small, but a nice cross section of things on the menu. Everyone was happy with their meal. Don't expect comfy seating or a lot of hand-holding from the staff.

Google
I shouldn't write a review when I'm angry. Just a reminder to myself never to go here again. While it's a popular local hangout, and apparently the fries are world famous- although they're always dry and poorly seasoned and burned around the edges whenever I've ordered them that I've ordered extra sauce to make them palatable, their online menu is outdated and incorrect- so DON'T use it as reference to make a decision-> I made this mistake, and it cost me a door cover and ultimately no food, the bands were intolerably loud for such a small space so take earplugs if you go. I have unfailingly left my drink unfinished, because the cocktails are, well, often unpalatable. It's consistently been a lackluster experience. But again, a popular local hangout. So.

Google
This was a very walkable restaurant and bar- small, cozy and quaint. Weekend midday was slow just the way I like it. Dropped one star due to there is only one table near the window, all the others were in the dark and couldn't properly read the menus!

Yelp
Chill dive bar vibes with a great staff serving up delicious cocktails, cheap beer, and great food. Quintessentially Athens.

Sabertooth M.

Yelp
Food- cant comment, never ate there. Service is good but there are times of congestion. Its a small place Ambiance- this is the epitome of a dive bar. Drinks are good and its decorated in the art Nuvo style, whatever that means.
google avatar

Alison L.

Yelp
Love the drinks there! I didn't eat this time, but a sweet atmosphere with great music! The big room felt hot to me. Needed AC or fans.

Yelp
The World Famous is the most Athens-y Athens restaurant. Trendy millennials flock here like moths to a light, and the only inhabitants of the restaurant trendier than the clientele are the staff-- between the three of them I think I counted 4 hair colors, 2 mullets, and at least 9 piercings. The dim lighting and lack of visible signage marking where the restaurant is strengthens the mysterious allure, making you feel like you've found a spot no one else knows about (even though everyone does). 5 stars for vibes. The real question is if the food and drinks are good. I'd give The World Famous 5 stars here as well. The poutine is famous here, especially if pay a couple bucks extra to slap some protein on top of it. The alcohol selection is also superb, and the cocktails taste pro. The World Famous was on my line-up for the 2 years I was an upperclassmen in this city, and will continue to be whenever I visit Athens.

Bob C.

Yelp
I'm going to stretch to give two stars. One might be more accurate. Interesting place. Definitely a dive bar and that's the point. Some claim to like the food but the selections are terrible. My food was very disappointing. Supposed to be a Frito coated fried chicken sandwich with coleslaw and honey mustard. I would call it a DRIED chicken sandwich with a shred of slaw and a drop of honey mustard. It was bottom of the barrel but they "generously" provided a bag of chips to go with it. A McDonald's chicken sandwich at one sixth the price wouldn't have been this bad. There's a tiny stage that could host a small band or perhaps a comic but it was not in use. The staff is friendly enough but you basically order and serve yourself. The tables are small and you can't really call the seats chairs. I would not go back.

Yelp
I've always heard good things about this place so I decided to check it out. There is no sign out front that indicated that we were at the right place so we had to ask around. We came in and it was packed, not because there was a lot of people but because the place was tiny. As first time go-ers we didn't know if it was "seat yourself" or "wait to be seated" so we sat there confused for a little bit until we went to a bartender, where they asked us if we wanted a menu. It seems like you order your food and drinks then you find a place to sit. Seating was limited so we sat on two high chairs with a low table that was very uncomfortable. We ordered Poutine and steamed buns. Poutine was mid--very salty but that's normal. Steamed buns were also mid and we think the pork was the same as poutine. I would go more for the vibes than the food and drinks. I personally wouldn't come here again just because it wasn't my vibe but I would recommend to those who like very hipster, "lowkey", places

Dylan E.

Yelp
Very eclectic and low key atmosphere. I highly recommend the Robert Van Winkle or the Pata De Cabra if you're into that sort of thing. I had the General Tso's with chicken and it was out of this world. :D Try the french fries with a side of liberace sauce if you know what I mean!!!! Remember to tip your barber! And have fun time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
This funky, artsy place was a great choice to have a couple drinks after lunch at Dawg Gone Good BBQ, which is just up the street. Just look for the sign that says "This Is It." It has a great beer selection, and it's full bar, so they have all of your booze groups covered. I chose my usual Makers rocks with a Creature Comforts Tropicalia. I ordinary detest IPA's, but I friend who knows I hate IPAs recommended it. It was a good choice. The bartender did a great job and handled two rounds more or less perfectly. I can't yet speak to how the place is crowd wise at night, but it was nice and chill when I stopped in with just a couple of apparent regulars. It was basically perfect for my purpose. The prices were very reasonable. Cheers!

Yelp
Everything was really acceptable and everyone in our group liked the acceptable nature of everything. Thank you!

Yelp
This is just a cool place. The food is decent, but the drinks are better. A nice addition to your night, or you could spend your whole time here. The music is usually good and the ambiance is relaxed and interesting. A good hangout for any night of the week.

Colby B.

Yelp
I hate leaving bad reviews so I only do it when it's really bad. The food was atrocious. The service was also abysmal. Never going back

David T.

Yelp
Found out that this place was frequented by the B52s so I had to come. What a cool vibe. Great drink selection.

Destin N.

Yelp
This was my first time experiencing racism at a restaurant. We were handed menus and told to seat anywhere we wanted but every table still had plates and cups from the previous customers so we had to clean it up ourselves...after 30 minutes of getting ignored by the servers that were severing everyone else around us, we left and was told that they were only doing bar service...which was weird because it wasn't even 9:00pm yet.
google avatar

Yelp
Small unique rustic pub with good food. Music some nights Food : 3-4/5 depending on what you order. Menu is limited but a good variety of choices. We like their burgers, shawarma (lamb or chicken) and steamed pork buns, Cuban sandwich egg rolls. Good beer list -bar is small but well stocked Service 5/5 Servers make the difference in how you feel about a place and the server here is always pleasant and quick. Location 3/5. Easy walking from downtown but street parking with meters is limited. There is a garage a block away. Facility 2/5 Quirky, spartan, rustic. Price and quality consistent with local bars-with-food serving a college town.

Yelp
Great little hole in the wall place! We heard about this place from a local and it's amazing!! Super great atmosphere! The pretzel bites were amazing we mixed the mustard and honey and it was so so tasty! I had the shawarma and oh my god amazing, so flavorful and there were fries on it which I loved! The poutine was fantastic! Definitely enjoyed our time here! Great find :)

Yelp
I was in town visiting and went to World Famous two nights in a roll. The food is alright but cheap. However, after the second time, we all woke up with a strong stomachache and fever like symptoms. No we don't have Covid cuz we can still smell things but this place appears to be very dirty.
google avatar

Carlie M.

Yelp
I was impressed with this place. They have a great menu selection (both food and drink). I had trouble deciding what to order because it all sounded amazing. I settled on the Cuban sandwich egg rolls which were amazing. They normally come with plantain chips, but unfortunately they were out. They have an awesome cocktail list and great beer selection. A very Athens vibe for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing service and really great food and drink selection. I highly recommend trying the poutine, it's killer!

Yelp
We stopped in twice during our visit to Athens, and loved it! The drinks were great, and reasonably priced. My boyfriend had the special drink, taste the rumbow, which was made of a skittles infused rum. So fun! I enjoyed the rose gin fizz. The ambiance was chill, and we enjoyed the artwork.
google avatar

Donnie M.

Yelp
Loved this place, but now the prices on the board are wrong and the bartenders argue about it. Not coming back.

Yelp
This place was so cool! The menu was so diverse and sounded so yummy, easy and fast service. This place is usually busy but we caught it on a weekend where alot of people were out of town! I got the pork steamed buns, they were so yummy and the buns were actually boas. We got the pretzels for an appetizier and it was so simple yet so tasty, probs my favorite part of the meal. For destert I got a honey pop, super refreshing and a sweet treat!!! A little bit expensive for the produt imo. Overall such a cool young vibe, super good food. You need to go more than once!!

Yelp
Great food, decent beer selection. Art all over, it's a really eclectic place. Cool hangout with mellow atmosphere.

Yelp
What a long travel day from So Cal it was. Add the reroute of the plane and the refueling, we finally got to our final destination-Athens Ga. It's late and all restaurants are closed except for The World Famous. Not only was it jamming with great music but they were still serving food at 11:30pm. Friendly staff greeted us- let's just say so amazing. Thank you, Nicklaus Ebert, for the amazing service and great Tufu Shawarma. Definitely a must try. I'll be back.
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
cute little hole-in-the-wall! it doesn't even have the name outside, just a sign that says "this is it!" it was seat yourself with no table service since it was starting to get crowded so we ordered at the bar. unfortunately this meant we had to keep asking for water refills rather than coming around on their own to fill the glasses. not a huge deal, though. i got the lamb schwarma which i wasn't my favorite but definitely not the worst i've had! the wings were delicious & the fries were perfectly crispy. i don't know if i'd be back, but i'm glad i tried it out!
google avatar

Roger H.

Yelp
Terrific quintessential Athens divey bar with music and yummy food that straddles pork, veg, and vegan. Cool wacky art on walls...interesting crowd
google avatar

Amelia H.

Yelp
If you like folk art, unique obscure visuals, and great date lighting, this place is for you. Ambience is as memorable as the food and this place meets both criterias. The food is eclectic and reflects in the name of the business. They use fresh squeezed fruit for their drinks which is such an underrated move. I like to order the tofu box because it's already in the takeout container-Nice since they put a lot of food in there and I often have some leftover. *Side note* you can replace the tofu with fried chicken ;-) The stage is currently filled with giant art -since bands aren't playing due to the pandemic. Great use of space guys! Clean bathrooms, live plants, super friendly staff. 10/10 will be going back.

Yelp
This was my second time trying The World Famous, and I wasn't disappointed. They have an assortment of different unique items on the menu and I really want to try them all. The staff, ambiance, and design make this place seem cozy, relaxing, and welcoming. Didn't get to try the drinks, but they all seem really good! This is a must try establishment in Athens!

Yelp
They have a blm sign in front so I went in. I sat at the bar and no one even looked at me. I walked up to someone and asked for a menu. The bartender came up to me and said do you want a drink. I mentioned that I sat down and no one looked at me or said hello. She told me I had an attitude and she was serving food. I told her she was talking to the other bartender while holding hot food instead of serving it. Also I was sitting right next to the people with the food so I don't understand how that prevented her from acknowledging my existence. She continued to have an attitude and talk about me to the other bartender while I was still sitting there. I paid and I didn't tip her and she made a joke under her breath and showed the receipt to the other bartender. Why the hell would i tip you. All she needed to do was say sorry after I said that I hadn't been acknowledged and we could have moved on but she decided to be a jerk instead. No one would tip someone after they acted like that. Not to make it a race thing but some white people walked in after me and were greeted with a hello immediately with big smiles.

Justina M.

Yelp
Unique drinks and concerts, good service too. It is that is small and but a friendly crowd. Not your typical college crowd.
google avatar

Arielle L.

Yelp
I would have to say that the World Famous can live up to it's name for good food (after a couple of drinks). It's definitely good bar food, but other than that's it. I've had the burger, poutine, and the chicken and waffles, but I don't know if I would run over here for lunch to grab them. Defiantly a good spot to go when going out in dt.

Yelp
Found myself in Athens super late on a Sunday night & this place came thru with fantastic drinks, shawarma, service, & the best dude running the joint. It was an absolute $&!@ day until I walked into the world famous at 11:05pm Sunday night
google avatar

Emily D.

Yelp
Tl;dr -- awesome but weak drinks. Great place to grab a drink and a bite with friends. Weird local art covers the walls, and the clientele is mostly graduate students / local artists (perfect for me). The food is hot, reasonably quick, and hits the spot -- the breakfast burrito was way better than you'd expect, and the greasy pretzel bites are a must have. I love hanging out here, but it must be said: the drinks are so weak! The cocktail menu is long and has something for everyone, but the beer list is relatively limited.
google avatar

Harry K.

Yelp
For great late night food come to this place .... bar staff is amazing and great live music. I highly recommend the Cuban cigars.

Lily P.

Yelp
The best place to watch any sporting event, but especially GA games! Love the atmosphere, food, and the staff is so amazing. 10/10! Love this place and would spend 7 days a week here if my spouse would let me
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
Cool little hole in the wall on the westside if downtown Athens, Ga. Happy hour has some drink specials, but that also have a good selection of bottled beer under $4. Food is also excellent. I've only had sides, but would recommend the pretzel bites or the fries. Maybe even both. Seat at the bar available and at tables in the adjoining room. Small place, but nice to visit for a couple drinks. It's a little off the beaten path, which isn't a bad thing. Probably even a good thing. Street parking available. Picture posted is of the Creature Comforts pale ale.
google avatar

Richie K.

Yelp
Good drinks in a "dive bar" atmosphere! Great beer prices & the mixed drinks go down real good. The food is on point too. Their poutine is some of the best I've had in or around town. The only down sides to this establishment is that it is small, 1 coed & handicap restroom, smaller tables, & the air is kinda stuffy with limited air conditioning. Overall it's a great place to meet up with your friends & have some drinks & pretty darn good bar food.
google avatar

Allison M.

Yelp
Have to be honest- this place got an entire star for ours soundtrack- they had some Sunday afternoon classic/outlaw country and I loved it. My friend and I snagged an intimate little table and sipped whiskey. Great people watching in a bustling little place. The food looked incredible and the servers friendly. Loved the aesthetics of the place and I'm excited to go back and visit next time in in Athens!

Yelp
I came here with a colleague after a long day of work and travel, and The World Famous did not disappoint. As luck would have it, we dined at this lovely establishment on "Experimental Monday," which meant that it was both a Monday, and that the live music was of the "experimental" variety. We were treated to two amazing acts: - The first act was a gentleman, with no discernible piano skills, banging away on a keyboard while rocking back and forth in spasmodic and violent bursts for 30 minutes. Truly one of the great solo artists of our generation. - The second act was a duet of sorts: one woman, with possible violin-playing abilities, scratching out melodies on her fiddle accompanied by another woman who alternated between whispered gibberish and screaming, moaning gibberish. It was more Yoko Ono than Yoko Ono. With such appetite-inducing music to enjoy, we also partook of the Chicken and Waffle Club, the Double-Stack Cheeseburger, and a tall glass of Tropicalia IPA from the local Creature Comforts brewery. Everything we consumed was fantastic, and I can only hope that my next visit coincides with another "Experimental Monday."

Yelp
I lived in Athens for 8 years and this is my favorite restaurant in the city. The thing I love about their menu is how original everything is. Their cocktails and food all have unexpected, innovative twists. It's hard to recommend specific options because everything is excellent, but I love the pork steam buns and the chicken & waffle club. If you get the burger, ask for the poutine sauce on it. Also make sure you order fries with the Liberace sauce.
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
Wow, I've been doing Athens all wrong! I had no idea a place like this existed. It was hard to find - - the only sign outside was a big arrow that says "this is it!" - - but it was totally worth it. I immediately fell in love with how quiet and chill the place was. The were little candles on the tables and big projector with a crackling fire on the screen. We sat at the bar, and I started with the Greyhound. It was very light, and I couldn't quite place the taste at first. Then I remembered it had earl grey tea and everything made sense again. Definitely toss your lemon in your drink though! I also got the Kickstand which was a High Life with grapefruit and grapefruit bitters. It was really fresh; there were huge chunks of pulp! Delicious and fun to drink. All of the staff was super laid back. I hope I can stop by again!

Yelp
With all of the bars I have been to in Athens, this might be one of my favorite. And I still give the five stars after they were out of the food items we wanted to get. So that tells you how cool this place is. We were in town for the Auburn/UGA game. And after a miserable game, we wanted somewhere to rest our feet, grab a drink, and maybe get something to eat. When we first arrived, the guy at the door asked how many people we had. After a concerned look on his face, I was in fear we wouldn't make it in. But he said he would let us four in and cut it off there until someone left... first win for us on the day! The ambiance of this place was really cool. It had a rustic decor but still didn't feel overly trendy. I just felt comfortable here. A big part of that came from the friendly staff. They were extremely busy, but so happy to answer questions, give you a smile, and help you as efficiently as possible. The selection of liquor and beer was not extensive, but good enough for our purpose. I ordered a Booker's and our bartender was heavy handed with it... definitely a good thing. Some other people in our party ordered their drink that was made with grape soda and tequila. I was told that was good along with the beers that were ordered. The tables were full when we got there. But we grabbed one pretty quick. I guess that is the convenient thing of the doorman not letting it get too crowded. We grabbed some food menus and discussed our night. After hemming and hawing, we decided to get something to hold us over until we went to another spot guaranteed to have a massive wait. So we tried for the wings and pretzel bites... but as I already mentioned, they were out of both. I would have then opted for the poutine, but I knew the group I was with wouldn't be quite as on board. So we went with the plain handcut fries. These were anything put plain. As soon as they came our hunger came out and they didn't last long on the table. The sauce that came out with them was also good. My wife did say that as a woman, the bathroom situation wasn't the best. Co-ed bathrooms with a broken lock on one. But since I didn't go while I was there, that wasn't an issue for me and won't go into my star rating. Overall, I loved this place and wish I could have tried more of the food. But on my next trip, you can bet that is on my list.

Meredith M.

Yelp
Damn. Came to Athens to get a tattoo and this place came highly recommended. The wings!! 10/10 also excellent cocktails. Will definitely be back

Lindsay W.

Yelp
Absolutely the worst service in athens. My meal came out so late and it was cold! On top of all this there was a HAIR in my food. When we expressed this to our waitress she was incredibly dismissive and seemingly occupied in a nearly empty restaurant. Incredibly disappointed and will not be returning.
google avatar

Abbie T.

Yelp
This place is small but fantastic! There are lots of creative (and delicious) cocktails to choose from. The food is creative and everything I've had so far has been really good. The staff was friendly. The only downside to this place is it's size - it's pretty small. Finding a seat is sometimes difficult if you want to sit down. Overall great place.

Jose J.

Yelp
This server bent and damaged my state issued ID and claimed it was fake and proceeded to kick us out. I attempted to show an alternative ID but he also said it was fake. All of the employees had a condescending demeanor and we felt uncomfortable the entire time. Don't waste your time here.

Justina M.

Yelp
Great to have The World Famous and super friendly staff there for me, unusual drinks are a plus.

Yelp
Unprofessional. My husband and I were walking around downtown Athens recently and saw that they had just opened for dine in since covid restrictions had lifted. The waiter seemed so frazzled poor guy and maybe it was because they hadn't had any dine in customers in a while but there was only us and one other couple. He first accidentally brought us the other couples appetizer, okay, it happens. We told him that it was not ours & he took it to the right table. THEN - once we got our meals we noticed my husband had received a burger instead of his tacos. Mine looked correct, so I started to eat my fries. We politely told him that his order was incorrect and he ordered the tacos. The waiter realized that he had given us the other couples order. I told him that the sandwich I had gotten was also what I had ordered but he said the other person had ordered it differently and that it was theirs. I reminded him - "Okay. But I did pick off some fries off the plate. I'm sorry about that." I'm apologizing assuming they are going to throw it away and have to make the other persons order all over again since you know... I touched the food and COVID-19 is happening people. But the waiter just looked at me confused as to why I am so apologetic about eating some fries. HE WALKS THE FOOD TO THE OTHER TABLE and literally says to them... "Hey I accidentally took this order to their table but she ate some fries off the plate. Is that okay???" LIKE WHAAT? Who does that? I cannot believe that. That was crazy to me.
google avatar

Crystal J.

Yelp
Love this cozy quaint establishment. I'm a local and have been visiting this joint for years. Love the music, the vibe and the food is amazing the pork steamed buns are a must have. I love the nooks with tables where you can just sit have a drink and people watch from the floor to ceiling window. Or sit out front and have a smoke if that's your thing and a drink. The bar tenders are awesome very engaging and polite.
google avatar

Matt P.

Yelp
I'm a local and this is my new favorite place. We had empanadas, egg rolls, and wings and I kid you not, it was the BEST food I've had of that variety.

Alexis M.

Yelp
came here last Saturday night for the second time and was so impressed -- easily the coolest place I've been to in Athens :,) the staff is super friendly and efficient and the place runs so smoothly. as others have mentioned the bar itself is hella cute!!really eccentric decorations and the playlist was awesome. pretzel bites and whiskey selection are bomb as heck, can't recommend coming here enough and I can't wait to come back!
