🍺 £7.10 Wrexham Pilsener
The Wren Tavern is located on Watling Street, just opposite St Mary Aldermary church in the City of London. The nearest Tube station is Mansion House, Bank station is also close by.
This pub is located at the base of a luxury apartment building and was opened in September 2024 by @urbanpubsandbars. The pub is named after Sir Christopher Wren, who built 52 churches following the Great Fire of London, including St Paul’s Cathedral.
Opposite the pub is the Cordwainer bronze sculpture, located next to St Mary Aldermary Church. It commemorates the Ward of Cordwainer Club and celebrates the area’s rich shoemaking heritage. The term “cordwainer” originates from “cordwain,” a fine leather produced in Córdoba, Spain, renowned for its quality.
This is a good-sized, one-bar pub with a stylish, traditional feel. The servery is located on the left-hand side and features a sweeping curved counter. On either side of the entrance are a couple of cosy nooks with views out to Watling Street. As you move further into the main bar area, you’ll find a few poser tables with stools, leading to an intimate dining area complete with comfy booths. The décor features a parquet and terracotta tiled floor, exposed brickwork, elegant wood-panelled walls, traditional paintings of England’s green and pleasant land, and deep-buttoned banquettes. There is also a speakeasy cocktail bar called 5cc in the basement.
The beer lineup is solid, offering a selection of familiar favourites, independent brews, and two cask ales. I opted for a Wrexham Pilsener, a beer I hadn’t seen on tap in London before. My pint hit the spot, though the price was a bit punchy. The food menu features classic British gastropub fare — fish and chips is priced at £19.
I arrived just after 11 a.m. on an overcast Friday morning in February. The pub had just opened, so the atmosphere was calm and relaxed. Four city workers were already in and settled into one of the nooks at the front. The service was excellent, I had a nice chat with the team about the great job with the refurbishment.
This pub hosts live premiere league and champions league matches.
It’s great to see another pub added to the London landscape, especially one that embraces a more traditional approach to its decor, fixtures, and fittings. Visiting @thewrentavernec4 was an enjoyable city pub experience—go check it out. 🍻
