Best Bratwurst Sausages in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"This Northwest Indiana paradise for sausage is an international emporium of encased meats with pastrami hot dogs, longanisa, and Polish sausage. It’s about 30 minutes east of Chicago without traffic, and a great move if you’re meeting friends on a holiday getaway in Indiana or Michigan. Just pack the cooler. The sausages are superior. They specialize in whole-animal butchering, and the owner worked at high-profile restaurants like Publican Quality Meats and Gilt Bar. Mike Sula at The Reader hosted them at one of his Monday Night Foodball pop-ups." - Ashok Selvam

This place is the best! The butcher is super knowledgeable, kind, caring and funny! We’ve pretty much gotten away from grocery store bought meat. The Wurst is where it’s at! They also support our community and give recipes if needed lol! I can’t say enough great things about this place! Try The Wursts Beef Chorizo too!!! Well really try everything!!

Awww, Lawrence... from the mouth the heart speaks. I've been a customer of The Wurst since moving to Griffith in 2020. This is where I primarily shop for all my meats and eggs: local, fresh, healthy, beautiful cuts, DELICIOUS! Ricky is a true blessing to everyone through his expertise as a butcher and his patient generosity of sharing his knowledge, suggestions, and recommendations with customers. I have seen peoples of all different skin tone/ethnicity in his store and he has treated everyone with respect. We need you and support you. Thank you Ricky!

My favorite butcher & butcher shop. Top notch customer service every time. Best quality meats and sausages! Roast beef, Beef bacon and ground beef are my staples every week but he is always happy to help me find something new to try! Highly recommend!

I have been going to the Wurst for years. I am completely shocked and taken back for someone to call anyone that works here a racist, nevertheless the owner! Ricky is an awesome individual, man and provider of excellent meat and service. During the pandemic, when everyone else was rasing prices and allowing people to hoard, Ricky made sure the Wurst keep thier pricing consistent and products available for everyone. I 1000% vouch for Ricky's character. And yes, I happen to be a black man that has been shopping with him for years.

The Butcher here made me feel uncomfortable because he was being impatient when I was asking him about the lamb I wanted him to cut. He gave me racist vibes. I don’t think this butcher was professional and they should be named “Worst” instead of Wurst for their customer service. All minorities beware of this place……. I will not never come back nor recommend anyone to this place because you as a butcher stated you can’t cut lamb shoulders in pieces the way I pointed out to you. You didn’t even recommend given me those pieces I liked. The lady I was with agreed that you gave off just racist weird faces when asked about the lamb. Your customer service was totally unacceptable you seemed gave racist vibes. I don’t like feeling unwanted and rushed and I hope you are not like that with other minorities. If we were in Chicago man you wouldn’t dare gave those faces but you got it god Bless.

Google
You're not going to find a better butcher in NWI. This isn't a meat market, it's a butcher shop. They use the whole animal, all of which come from a single farm under 150 miles away, and all butchering is done in shop. All sausages are made in house with in house made spice kits... Nothing is prepackaged BS. Good luck finding another shop that doesn't get their cuts from a box of vacuum packed pre-cut meat from who knows where.

If you know, then you know. Healthy animals from local farmers. I only serve my family meats from this place because I know Ricky puts his heart and soul into assuring top notch quality. This place has THE best ribeye, you can taste the difference. - Let sit at room temp for an hour. - Rub with Black & Tan steak rub. - Sear on grill with high heat, 2 min each side. - Move to top rack and lower heat. - Pull steaks off once middle reaches 130 degrees. - Let sit for 5 min. Perfect medium rare. - Slice and feast! The quality is on par with the best steakhouses in the world. You can save hundreds of dollars. Try it.

Yelp
I have no complaints about the food, but I would say only so so for the price. Just expected something better.

Yelp
WHOA! Slagel Farm goat, pork, and lamb in NWI! Small batch sausages and dry-aged meats...in Griffith! Taco meat? Yup. Barbacoa? Yup. Cuban pork loin? Sometimes. In all cases, this is quality meat from farmers who care about their animals. You can actually come in and see the sides of beef aging in the locker and there in a band saw in the window. Very little secrets here. Don't forget to grab a bag of jerky too, because the Jamaican jerk is slap your mother good.

Yelp
The Wurst is a great addition to the local food landscape. I picked up steak and a chicken, both raised on local farms, from The Wurst. They were both terrific, particularly the chicken. I roasted the bird and made a gravy from the drippings. Now, I roast a chicken in a cast-iron pan for dinner probably 2x\month. And my kids love that meal. Just chicken, gravy, homemade mashed potatoes and a veg. They all said the chicken from the Wurst was the tastiest I've made. And they went nuts over the gravy. But I didn't do anything different. It was the depth of flavor from the chicken that elevated everything. The store itself is pretty cool. The product is front and center, displayed behind glass cooler walls. It's like a shrine to meat. I hope The Wurst is successful, simply because no one else around here is doing anything close to what the owner is tackling there.

Yelp
Excellent steak! Tried filet and ny strip and definitely the best quality we've bought in NW Indiana.

Yelp
I was looking for a place that would have a quality beef roast that I could prepare for Christmas dinner. Stopped in around 11:30 am and was greeted promptly by the clerk/butcher. I explained that my aging mother in law wanted pot roast for Christmas and he was able to produce two fresh roasts for me to pick from. I took the larger of the two. It was a huge success, as it was moist, melt in your mouth tender, flavorful. They deal with local farmers and butcher the whole animal. I highly recommend this place and I definitely have plans to return there soon.

Yelp
I can say with full confidence that The Wurst has the best meat you will find in Northwest Indiana. All the meat comes from small farms in Indiana (who doesn't love supporting local businesses). The animals are humanely raised with no steroids, hormones or antibiotics. The prices are higher than a typical grocery store but the taste and quality is more than worth the extra cost. The Wurst is a true butcher shop and not a meat market. They use whole animals and no part goes to waste. The traditional sausages they make are fantastic and are all worth a try. Long story short if you're a meat lover this is the only place you need to get the highest quality meat in the area.

Yelp
Fantastic quality. Excellent service. Unbelievable knowledge. Wonderful people. Just an exceptional butcher shop experience.

Yelp
Great old/new style butcher shop offering whole animal cuts. The animal choices are from farmers that care about their animals and are raised in tune with nature. This is not Walmart cheap food for cheap prices. The butcher I dealt with, Ricky, was knowledgeable and explained differences in the cuts I was looking for. Definitely will be a repeat customer.

Yelp
Awesome butcher shop!!! Great advice on cuts to purchase and cooking tips. It's a bit far for me to go to, but I def plan on going there moving forward!!
