Where to Eat and Drink in Portland’s Montavilla Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"The Yard food pod houses around a dozen food carts and a beer-and-wine bar just a few blocks north of Southeast Stark. The morning is Puddletown’s time to shine, with lines forming for classic sandwiches on bagels baked just blocks away. Taqueria El Torito and Gyro Kingdom are lunchtime stars, offering generously packed burritos and crisp falafels tinged with mint respectively. Those seeking late-night sustenance will find terrific deals at Bai Yok Thai, a cart that pre-dated the pod and expert Thai fried rice specialist." - Nathan Williams

A New Food Cart Pod Is Coming to Montavilla - Eater Portland

"Shawarma, Philly cheesesteaks, and Portland-brewed beer is coming to a new food cart pod on NE Davis. The Yard at Montavilla, set to open in mid-May, will house up to 17 carts with outdoor covered seating, with six carts already signed on. Brothers Jeffrey and Kevin Dennis, who have a background in real estate development, decided to transform a lot on NE 82nd and Davis once home to a Thai restaurant into a pod. “We’ve been doing real estate development for a while, and there’s a lot of housing development out there. We wanted to do something that would aid the community but provide ongoing income for us,” Jeffrey Dennis says. “I love the food cart pods, I love how they provide 17 businesses with opportunities to succeed. They’re great for the community and the neighborhood.” Currently, the brothers have signed up six carts: Oregon-based cart chainlet Shawarma Express, yet-to-open Philly cheesesteak cart Kings of Steak, current ghost kitchen American Eclectic Burger, to-be-named Mexican and crepe carts, and a beer cart from the co-founder of Scout Beer, Joe St. Martin. Scout, which operates its own pod on SE Division and is opening a new cart on NE Glisan this year, started as a beer cart, so Martin’s cart at the Yard at Montavilla would be a sort of return to its roots. It will operate 12 taps, with some Scout Beers as well as other Portland-area beers; the cart will also stock things like ciders, wine, and, in Martin’s words, “Maybe something fun, like White Claws.”" - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

The yard has an eclectic selection of food from all around the world. We went there for lunch and were pleasantly surprised by all the choices. We ordered lunch from the “Taste of Afghan” cart. The eggplant dish- Borani Banjan - was delicious and the eggplants melted in our mouth. The naan was thin, warm and done right. The food was fresh, prepared promptly, and was tasty. Owner of the Taste of Afghan cart was very sweet, kind and courteous.

This is a nice cart area. They have covered seating and a few of the tables have heaters too. There is a good variety of food options. They serve alcohol. I wish there was a coffee cart! But most don't have this unfortunately. I went to Thai food and Boba Blastic. It was okay but I'll try something different next time.

Google
This is my favorite food truck spot. It's kept up well and all of the truck operators are so nice. I never have a bad experience here. The outdoor seating area is super cute too.

Google
Wonderful new food cart pod!! Mira's East African, Gyro Kingdom, and Boboblastic are all open late with amazing good options! Veg options too! So excited for this neighborhood addition! Potties and handwashing stations and nice big covered seating area! Update: excited for the progress! really great spots here for a variety of food options. Sushi rolls and burritos, vegan and gluten free. Beer cart and fire pit! And some carts are open late!

The food at all of the carts in this pod are fantastic. Unfortunately, whoever is running this park has let it go so bad. Everything is broken and dirty and there’s no place to sit and enjoy your food. It’s become really rundown. It’s really sad because we love the carts at this park.

Google
Some food trucks were closed, but the menu looked great. And there was a women there cleaning up a little bit, but there was trash and food on the ground and tables were dirty. Hopefully this is just a really warm weather rush & it'll be picked up going forward... I'll be back.

Yelp
Clean and friendly! It was a hot day at 92 degrees but there was covered seating and a breeze. A variety of food carts. Hard to choose just one. I picked a lamb gyro. Fresh ingredients and a big serving for the price. Enough to share! Worth a stop to try another cart. Looking around at other tables, each cart choice smelled and looked good!

Yelp
A great selection of food carts. Good amount of seating for the time of day that I was there. I could see it being crowded at a busier time of day.

Yelp
Not the closest food cart pod to home, yet we find ourselves returning here more frequently than some others. Great bagels and boba at Puddletown and Bobablastic, respectively. The remaining carts seem to have a lot of overlap when it comes to their offerings, and nothing that really leaps out at us, so we haven't sampled any of them just yet. 82nd isn't the most accessible location for a food cart pod, but it's a welcome improvement to a neighborhood in dire need of a face lift, and any new feature that isn't a strip mall or fast food chain restaurant is a big win in my book!

Yelp
Great cart options, wish it had a little more seating and more eclectic music selections (all modern-country was a biiiit much)

Yelp
I used to love stopping by here for the delicious food, and grabbing a beer while listening to great music! But now this place is a complete ghost town. The last few times I've been over, all of the tables are soaking wet. There's no longer a covering for the seating area, so there's no point in hanging out unless I feel like my food getting rained on and a wet butt. Really sad.

Yelp
There are a number of food trucks and some of the locals that were there, were raving about the burgers me the gyros. I had a salad and lamb gyro. They were monster portions and were meals by themselves. Both were tasty. They have a tent with a heater to protect you from the elements. I enjoyed it and will be back if I'm in the region.

Yelp
They took the heated patio seating away but The food and service is always a win. The people are friendly and the food is delicious.

Yelp
Mac 'n cheese. Need I say more? Yes, I do!! It was gloriously delicious. They also have great wing, Korean bbq is a great balance to the super cheesy and gooey Mac. Pizza craving, well, take two steps to the left and you got it! A must try if you love food trucks!

Yelp
This is not a large food pod; however, they have a good variety of food. The food there for some reason seems to be of good quality. They also have a small covered heated area. The heaters work on the upper body but not the lower body; since, they are small hanging heaters. There is an adequate street parking, so parking is never an issue. Gyro kingdom is open until 1 a.m. which is nice. He is one of the reasons why we go there. Come to this food pad. You will not be disappointed. I am making myself hungry just thinking about it...

Yelp
Tried Gyro Kingdom for lunch and would go back. Super fresh, clean, nice cook, huge portions, made to order. I tried a felafel wrap and it was very nicely cooked, not greasy at all. Topped with a huge assortment of pickles, veggies, sauces, it was a buffet in a wrap! I was very impressed by the quality of the veggies and sauces, though the felafel balls and tahina sauce were different (more bland?) than I'm used to from eating Israeli and Palestinian styles. Definitely worth a try!

Yelp
Nice addition to the hood! Follows the known format: around 10 food carts and a beer cart, covered seating, and porta potties. They have cornhole. Decent array of carts. Vegan Mexican, gyros, steak sandwiches, sushi, Ethiopian, East African, Thai, smashed burgers, boba and more to come. Not a larger pod by any means but a lot on offer for the small space.

Yelp
What a great food pod in the neighborhood! This food cart pod is located right on 82nd which was how it caught our attention. The various types of food offers a lot of diverse options like Ethiopian, African, American, Japanese, and Thai delicacies. Drinks like bubble teas, smoothies, and beers are available besides the usual water bottles and sodas as well. Please check out this local food pod and support them all! They've recently opened and definitely need all the customers they can get! Try out types of foods you've never had before! I definitely will be coming back. They do have pet bowls at one of the benches under the tent, so pets are welcome!

Yelp
Update for Bai Yok: Another great experience with Nancy! I tried one of my favorite Thai places since the last time I went here and it just wasn't nearly as good. The flavors are better and have more depth, plus, Nancy is seriously the nicest person ever. I've been getting medium spice and it makes my eyes water, which I like, so if you are sensitive to heat, be aware. I got the Red Curry with chicken and Spicy Basil Chicken but subbed broccoli for the peas since I don't like them and added broccoli to the Spicy Basil. I like my veggies. Again, it's worth the trip out here.

Yelp
Oh my god there are some great food here. I love the different selection of food and how friendly everybody else. I also love the new tables they set up in the center to sit down and eat. He definitely a great family setting

Yelp
I onetime times are hard right now but inconsistent business hours are gonna kill this awesome place. Everyone just closed down before 10pm on a Friday! One of you keep open til 1am on Friday and Saturday. Just one!!

Yelp
Gryo Kingdom I just had their Lamb Arabi and it was an absolutely delish. Great portion for the price and service with a smile. Thank you for the great experience.

Yelp
Love supporting this food truck stop in our neighborhood. So far, we've tried sushi, cheesesteaks and tacos -- all have been very good. Highly recommend stopping in!
