The One-Two Punch: A Date Night Dinner & Drinks Guide - Seattle - The Infatuation

"You’ve just had a massive steak and the mood is good, so we’re not sending you to a stuffy bar to sip cordials in the dark while you struggle to come up with conversation topics. Go to The Yard instead, and opt for an interesting beer or hard cider. If it’s nice out, sit at a picnic table on the patio, but splitting a booth inside is just as good." - aimee rizzo

On the Grid : The Yard Cafe

"You expect the Yard to be bar and grill with it’s wood plank interior surrounded by overflowing green planters, but this is the place to go if you want Mexican. Or really if you want to just hangout. This is the spot for a gourmet beer selection and Mexican food that surprisingly good for the spice-phobic northwest. Enjoy bacon-wrapped jalapeños and homemade tortillas and chips that arrive hot. The dog-friendly front patio surrounded by ivy walls is the spot to enjoy some brews in the evening and make new friends at the over-sized picnic tables." - Modern Species

Where To Drink Beer In Seattle

"The Yard Cafe, from the same people as The Dray, is a bar with three different seating situations—making it a very versatile spot for beer-drinking and Mexican food eating. There’s a yard full of picnic tables, a bar with indoor seats, and a big back room with booths. No matter where you decide to sit, it’s great for a first date or group hang over something interesting on tap and some tacos or tortas." - aimee rizzo

I hate writing bad reviews but unfortunately I need to mark this as a spot a place to avoid. Service started out great and we ordered the Taco Dorado's - they are essentially a mushy pulled chicken inside a fried tortilla shell (the lettuce and tomatos on the top are essential to make palatable) - we ordered a few beers and our server was great about giving us tasters to find what we wanted from the variety of local beers (beers were delicious)... Now for when everything really went down hill. The Fish and chips is horrible, greasy with raw batter on all 3 pieces, I've reviewed dozens of fish and chips and these are some of the worst due to this issues. The chips were skinny limp fries with no seasoning, but if there was one decent thing, it was the pickled cabbage on the side. The Sopes Chili Verde looked great but was lacking in flavor and half the pork was the chewy fatty portion that chews more like gum. For $90 I would say the price is overwhelming for what you're paying. Side note, as I'm writing this, my stomach is starting to turn... Potentially undercooked food could make for a fun weekend.

Stopped in with the hubby & fur babies. Great food & dog friendly. Hubby had the chicken sandwich which was HUGE! I had the smash burger and it was delicious! Service was slow but well worth the wait!

Google
Happy hour is great. An excellent bean dip. Cheeseburger came with a fantastic salad. My friend who is gluten-free, was able to request lettuce wrap instead of a bun for her cheeseburger. Solid beer, options and lots of open air seating with picnic style tables, as well as having great ventilation for indoors. Each time I’ve been there I’ve seen kids able to sit with their parents and enjoy.

Google
I took my parents to the yard, and the waitress with red hair should be in the running for the best waitress of all time. She was so kind and accommodating with my mom’s food sensitivities, and stopped by our table enough to be helpful, usually with a witty line. She made our experience excellent.

Google
Lovely spot with good food and drinks. Indoor and outdoor seating. You used to be able to park in the lot next door, but the salon there took ALL of the spots. Which is ridiculous if you ask me. But Yard cafe is great.

Google
We ordered chips, salsa, guacamole, tacos. I liked the shrimp tacos the best, but the fish and duck ones were good too. I got a hot toddy which was excellent. Servers were helpful but not always there when you needed them. Atmosphere is trendy, but a little cold, but was probably just right after a drink. Good place for a date night or to meet up with friends before aTaproot play. Parking is a little harder to get but you can get it on side streets. I probably wouldn't bring kids just because it's a pub atmosphere, but I'm sure you could. There were vegetarian options clearly marked.

Google
Amazing local hangout in the Greenwood. We sat in the covered porch area. Nice heaters provided a very comfortable environment. A couple TVs in the background to see college football. We enjoyed the scramble and the relleno. Nice local craft beer selection. Thank you Sabrina for your service and the chef for your house made food. A definite go to in the Seattle area. Support local - it matters

Google
The tacos were awesome!! The service was welcoming, cheery, and helpful. I was there super early because of jet lag but I’m sure the vibes would have been good too when there was more people. Highly recommend!

Yelp
That orange salad is SO GOOD. Server was really sweet too and adjusted the temp for us. Super cute place:)

Yelp
Stopped by to try Yard Sunday and absolutely loved the food and staff! There was so much to choose from. I had a chicken, bacon and guacamole sandwich that was excellent, fries crisp and not saturated in grease. Excellent selection of home made sauces. My partner had an egg scramble that was spectacular. The hash browns are unique and very tasty. Ben turned us onto their home made flan, which was the best I've ever had. I know what I'm getting next time...

Yelp
So much has changed at the yard since my last review:). If you haven't been to the YARD CAFE lately or haven't found it yet - then drop in for: A) The best Margarita in North Seattle. B) Dog friendly courtyard. C) Made "on-site" English Muffins during brunch that you won't get anywhere. Worth the trip all by itself! D) Diverse menu. So fresh, with flavors and an amazing bunch: https://theyardcafe.com/#food. D) Staff is fun, friendly and enjoy their job. E) Well thought out beer list and fabulous cocktails! You can find it here: https://theyardcafe.com/#drinks. North Seattle GEM!

Yelp
Comfortable neighborhood place. The booths were big, and it was chilly if you weren't sitting right below the heater (and it was 49 degrees out). I was surprised it was a menu keaning to Mexican flavors. I did enjoy my chicken taco salad wrap. Though it had a lot of sauce. Had to eat it with knife and fork. Asked for crispy fries, and they were nice and brown. But still soft and bendy. My friend had a veg bowl, which was actually a plate. Lots of beans, but she seemed to like it. Had good service.
google avatar

J W.

Yelp
Food was good, staff polite, when they see ya. The prices have always been high but wowzers the beans are delish. I think the tacos are overpriced. $8 for one taco

Sean B.

Yelp
Ordered the carnitas hash and eggs and received a bland portion that I didn't want to finish. It came with a side of tortillas that tasted although they had been left out as they were rubbery and cold. The habanero salsa was too sweet and nearly everything else including the cider tasted like they had been severely watered down. The most insulting part was the $14 mimosa which hardly filled the cup when it came out. The overall $85 (pre-tip) price point for it all did not reflect the bland quality and we left disappointed and semi-satiated. Save your money and find a decent restaurant that is anywhere but here.

Yelp
This place used to be good, I thought? Went there for brunch yesterday and got the breakfast platter. Scrambled eggs were a solid, stodgy mound, burned on the bottom; the bacon was scorched and tooth-chippingly hard; stuck my fork in one of the sausages, and (I am not making this up) it broke in two and half of it flew into the air and onto the ground. Our waitress was fine but the little hedgehog of a man that seated us clearly had an attitude problem and was annoyed at every question we asked him, including, "Is this table available?" Eff off, The Yard. You're not that cool.
google avatar

Olystacy B.

Yelp
This is such a cool little spot. It is like sitting in someones backyard being served delicious food, with a smile. There is seating outside and if you want shade or want to be cooler, you can sit in their shaded "inside" area. The vibe of this place is really great. Awesome menu choices, decent prices for the portions, fast and friendly service in a cool ambiance. My friend and I both had a delicious salad....but it was hard choosing as they had so many items that looked tasty. The couple next to us ordered a plate of fries and man they looked good. I wish we would have ordered some too. All told, we would definitely come back. Strongly suggest stopping in at Cafe Chocolati cafe which shares the same block for a dessert coffee and or truffle.

Yelp
This place used to be great! I came here often for years but hadn't been back since Covid. I see in other reviews here that ownership changed, which makes sense now. You'll get an average beer list where you can pay $8.5-$9 for a pint of beer from a local brewery. The tacos are now $8-$12 each and come on cold store-bought tortillas. The chips appear to still be house-made but are stale. The guacamole used to be great but was pretty bad too. The specials had French onion soup and my wife ordered that and it was served in a beer mug. I really wish I took a picture, it was pretty sad but funny. Seriously, even at $5 each these tacos would be insulting. I'm just really disappointed. This was a great spot that I used to enjoy and now there's literally nothing left. There are plenty of other good spots in greenwood, don't bother with the yard. RIP

Aparna B.

Yelp
Still a fantastic spot in Greenwood and brunch is back! Of course I had to get my favorite: the chilaquiles and they had quite a kick this time around. But the egg was cooked to perfection. I also got one of their breakfast tacos which was delicious. I tried a new drink this time around which was colorful, refreshing and delicious (and a little dangerous since I drank it so fast). Love coming back here!

Yelp
Updating my review a few years later to say that this place is now great. Customer service is top notch, with friendly waiters alongside great food and beverage offerings. After a string of bad experiences some time back that kept me away I've now gone regularly.
google avatar

Vanessa R.

Yelp
Someone else described this place as being served in someone's back yard with a smile! I couldn't agree more. Although I only had a margarita here and need to return for food, I still had a great experience. My margarita was scrumptious, and not too pricey, and the server was very sweet and attentive. I loved the outdoor area and the indoor area didn't look bad either! This would be a cute spot for a date night or to catch up with friends, and it is within walking distance of a lot of other great spots!
google avatar

Yelp
The food, ambiance and service were great. Very different menu items. A must try at least for the good coffee they serve.

Yelp
Met a friend here for dinner/drinks. First time back since pre-Covid, and I was honestly a little wary given the recent negative reviews on and off Yelp. Very pleased to report that I still like The Yard every bit as much as before. It was a quiet weekday night, and our server was perfectly attentive and friendly, and our food and drinks were tasty. Looks like their menu's expanded a bit. Still with several vegetarian options. I had the veggie enchiladas, and my friend had a few tacos. There were a couple small kitchen mix-ups, but they were handled appropriately. I look forward to returning.

Kiana J.

Yelp
God awful food. Looks like it would be appetizing, however is the most bland, soggy, and overall unenjoyable menu I've had in Seattle. The salsas were so bad they were laughable and the only good part about them were that they came with chips. The carnitas lacked flavor and the scramble was so soggy. The price of these dishes does not reflect the value of their flavor. Both dishes were $18 each and the mimosas were $14 each with a laughable portion. Even the cider tasted like it was watered down urine (meant to be guava flavored). Angry that $100 of my bank account is now given to this joke of an establishment. Felt bad for the poor waitress who had to work there so tipped her 20%. Never considered dining and dashing more than this restaurant. Never come here unless you want below mediocre food at a stupidly high price point.

Yelp
Came here on a whim and it was a very positive experience. Our server checked on us just the right amount and the service was impeccable. The food was great. Perfect blend of flavors and textures. Highly recommend the huevos rancheros! It wasn't too heavy and just really yummy.
google avatar

Erin R.

Yelp
Sat and had drinks only. They have a great selection of beer and it was cold and delicious. The food looks amazing and we will try to go back and try it. Service was excellent and the atmosphere was fun and inviting. Gigantic booths with room for many friends.
google avatar

Yelp
Used to love this place but not much anymore. They are understaffed. We were there last week, oredered some food and drinks. It took about 30 minutes to get the drinks which was just couple of beers. It was almost impossible to order new drinks also. Food was just meh, no one in our group finished their plates. It was a waste of money for $20 quinoa salad. Apperantly beers were waiting at the bar for a long time since they were warm when the waitress brought them to us. Wouldn't go there again while there are so many places where you can eat good food with proper drinks.
google avatar

Yelp
Visited for the first time last week w/the motivation of drinking Pliny the Younger driving us. First time visit and we loved it for so many reasons. Sat at the bar and had great conversation w/the fun and knowledgeable staff, drank great beer, had delicious food and can't wait to go back! Their menu for both food & beverage is eclectic, which is a win-win for us!

Yelp
Came here for tacos and a Margie and had a great time. Awesome laid back PNW vibe. Outdoor seating, dog friendly and cool staff. Check it out.

Svenja K.

Yelp
Food is always great here, but the service last night was terrible. We think two servers kind of split the table and assumed each other had brought our drinks, an app, and mains. Had to ask for everything more than once. Got one apology for the app, but after everything, was expecting maybe the app to be comped or a drink. Still full price. And for $120 for two drinks each, chips and guac, and a few tacos, I'm expecting exceptional service. Hate to tip less than 20%, but my goodness. I get that things get busy, people are new, but every other table was being served in a timely fashion. Posting mostly to make the restaurant aware to train their staff better.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
Great little place since it re opened. We got the chicken wings with sweet and spicy. Good wings but next time I would get Buffalo. Also got the pretzel knots with jalapeño dip. Honestly the pretzels were too good on their own to add the dip. Lastly chips and quac another winner. Chips are warm, fresh salty and the guacamole is one of the best I have had a restaurant for a long time Drinks have also seemed to improved We got a few beers and the beekeeper which we got two round of They are being responsible with covid, definitely would recommend for apps and drinks for sure!

Yelp
We have been enjoying The Yard Cafe for a few years now and we are consistently satisfied and thrilled at their offerings. Our work colleagues chose this as a spot to get together during the pandemic given it had ample outdoor seating. These days it has become our go-to. The chefs are to be commended given they take pride in not opting for cheap high-processed ingredients but rather they intentionally opt for fresh vegetables and cooking as much as they came from scratch. It shows. We are vegetarians and we are always surprised at the consistent fresh delicious taste and thoughtful presentation. It is never just a plate slopped down. Their food is an offering of joy. The staff have always been kind, patient and helpful. And we will continue to patronize this great place that reflects a certain value of Seattle - the diversity of Greenwood, happiness, relaxed space, and a deep pride in tasteful and taste-rich food. Thank you:)

Yelp
Dropped by around lunch time on a Saturday and was able to grab an outside bench pretty easily. Service was responsive but the food was just ok. Had the poblano burger, ordered medium, with a side of fries. The burger besides the meat had some good flavor with the poblanos and chipotle aioli, but the meat was well done and not seasoned. Same overcooked issue with my friend's burger, but she had ordered hers medium rare. Fries were fine, although seemed like they had been sitting for a while. Ok spot if you're in the neighborhood looking for a casual beer garden
google avatar

Yelp
My daughter plays soccer in the area on occasion. My wife and I love stopping here for a quick appetizer and cocktail . Service is always great and love the margs.
google avatar

Kathryn E.

Yelp
There is new owners and it does NOT live up to the hype. I went here for 5+ years pre-COVID and now it is very blah.
google avatar

Mary Lou R.

Yelp
Road trip, didn't eat breakfast and I was starving and the chance to eat at this place that's no longer in a city where I live was a wonderful treat. I have been wanting a taco for awhile and there is no place that I would rather have a taco than The Yard. The guacamole/chips/alcohol took the edge off while we waited for tacos but the luxury of choosing from a long list of tacos was delightful. These jewels were made to order so it's not instant and just chill and snack on the guacamole. I am sure that the rest of the menu is just as tasty but the tacos are what I eat here. And the very patient server showed me how to use the QR function on my phone. So, I have been very resistant to cave to The Code but fine, for this food I did it. May actually be a (reluctant) convert - maybe.

Yelp
For a special belated birthday for myself and one of my staff, a couple of our other staff took us out to lunch at the Yard restaurant. There were some things that I actually like about the Yard: Firstly, the parking was great. It was nice to be able to roll up and get a parking spot right at the building at the lunch rush hour. Secondly, the look and feel of the exterior of the restaurant was really appealing. I like the fact that the bathrooms were gender neutral but were one person at a time spaces. Otherwise, the ambience of the restaurant was OK. And had sort of a rustic feel about it but nothing that made it special. I was very cold in some spots inside but there were heat lamps above certain areas. So, trying to find the ideal place to sit was challenging. They have more seating downstairs then they do upstairs however the booths downstairs are extremely tight. So larger individuals might not either fit or be very comfortable. Our hostess/wait person was efficient in seating us, discussing the menu, and taking our orders. The menu had a variety of appetizers, salads, tacos, and entrees but tying to get low carb options was not easy. I was told we'd have to pay more to get a taco on lettuce because we did not want the corn or flour shell. OK, so that was really ridiculous. The food tasted great. Everyone was happy with their selections. I got carnitas taco over shredded cabbage and big thick bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers. I would get both again.

Yelp
We went to the Yard Cafe on a busy Wednesday night with 7 people and were delighted to have been accommodated with our large party. Our waitress was wonderful and wore her mask constantly and appropriately, and the cafe's beer selection was excellent. This being the case, the food and cocktails were pretty subpar--which is perhaps sure or the fact that the menu attempts to be a jack of all trades rather than focusing on a few types of food and making them well. The outdoor seating space was lovely, separated from the street by a huge wall of lush trumpet vines, but I did bump backs once or twice with someone sitting at the table behind me which was far from being ideal.

Loreen A.

Yelp
I asked some friends to meet me at the Yard last night (first time home in a year) and more people showed up than I expected. The attitude of the wait staff went from tolerant to extremely annoyed that we had such a big group. We were very patient and polite but when we went to cash out we asked for separate checks and we got a ton of attitude. I decided to pay the whole bill and have people just pay me. I come to find out that two of my friends had paid there portion already but I was still charged for it. I was so excited to see my friends but the attitude of the waitstaff really put a sour note on my homecoming, I'm so sorry to bring business to your restaurant, I promise my 30+ friends won't make that mistake again. Update: the owner reached out to apologize for the bad service and make sure to resolve the duplicate payment issue. I updated from 1 star to 3 stars.

steve m.

Yelp
We had a smallish group at this place and the server would not split up checks individually. I attribute that to laziness and not wanting to make any effort. He did not realize he would get bigger tips if it's split up, He had an attitude as well. They also double charged my friend who paid the bill, I'll take my business elsewhere moving forward. Update the owner reached out to my friend and resolved the double charge! Very cool!

Michelle T.

Yelp
So delicious. First time at brunch. Huevos racherous we're great too but I ate it before I can take a pic
google avatar

Yelp
Worst Queso ever, literally a ball of rubber with stale chips. Service was slow but that could be staffing.
google avatar

Kirsten F.

Yelp
I really liked this spot; cozy ambiance, friendly staff, and tasty food. I got the grilled chicken sandwich and my friend got the crispy, both were really good! Another friend got the quesadilla and it was huge + loaded inside. Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Krista R.

Yelp
I've been here several times and we usually have a great time. This time I brought my work team of 18, and the service was a bit frustrating - I would ask for another drink and it would be taken to someone else who ordered the same drink, 3 different times. We also got food we didn't order, but in the chaos it just set down and I'm sure we were charged for it all. Most of the food got good reviews. My chicken and waffles wasn't great (dry chicken), but my black orchid drinks were delicious! I'll probably come back, but not with as many people.

Ballardite S.

Yelp
Food is pub food good (not super imaginative but decent). Outdoor tables are nice (set back from the street and surrounded by a bit of greenery) but we like the booths on the lower level. All the staff are super friendly but Jade is our absolute favorite.
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Sunday for a few drinks and some lunch. The watermelon margarita was one of the best I've ever had. We tried just about every taco, as well as the chicken sandwich. All were amazing. We ordered the chips and salsa. Chips were fantastic but I felt the amount of salsa you get is way too small for what they charge. Bowls are too small to dip into. Other than that, we had no complaints. Service was excellent. Food came out fast. We will definitely go here again
google avatar

Michael O.

Yelp
Went here with my 11 month old and wife and had a horrendous experience. For starters, the waitress was incredibly rude. When I asked her if they had high chairs she sad no and laughed at me. She then took our order after 35 minutes of being seated and us having to remind her several times. She reconfirmed our order after an hour, saying that she'd put the food order in at that point. Before our food was brought out, the waitress asked if it was okay that she mixed up our order with another table's order. She also made it evident that if we said we wanted our original order (not the incorrect order), she would be unhappy. Other patrons who arrived well after us, ordered, ate, and paid before we even got our food. We also asked for extra salsa and guacamole, which was delivered after our meal was done. We were charged for said salsa and guacamole. TLDR: I will never dine here again

Paige E.

Yelp
The food here is really amazing and the ambiance is great for drinks and a meal. Everyone that served us was also super friendly.
google avatar

Mackenzie C.

Yelp
The Yard Cafe has a really nice outdoor seating area with picnic tables and counter seating. The drink list was good but the food and service were just okay. The tacos were alright but nothing incredible. The shrimp one honestly didn't really even taste like shrimp, which was confusing. I almost couldn't tell the difference between the shrimp taco and the fish taco. I ended up paying almost $30 for two really small tacos and one beer, and our server forgot about us for a long time (at least 30 minutes) after we asked for a few more minutes to look over the menu. I'd go back for a drink but not for food.
google avatar

Karin H.

Yelp
Walked here for dinner on a recommendation while we were babysitting. The weather was nice so all of the outdoor seating was taken so we ended up sitting just the other side if the wall that divided the restaurant area from the bar. Being on a bit of a street taco thing lately I went with the street tacos. Nothing overly exciting and a little bit dry. The children's menu was also a little too sophisticated for a two year old (and meals are not generally altered for him) They didn't have anything that wasn't too spicy for the little guy so he didn't really like anything on his plate. We ended up picking things apart on all of our plates and playing the bite count game to get him to enough to eat. I might go back if I was with just adults but not a place I would go back to with a toddler

Julie S.

Yelp
So expensive for what it is. Quite tasty but not for the inflated price. $15 basic margarita. And up from there.
google avatar

Lucy L.

Yelp
Had a great experience here with a group of friends for lunch. Enjoyed chips and guac/salsa to start, craft beers, and an assortment of entrees including quesadillas and tacos. Everything came to the table in a reasonable amount of time. I got the adobada quesadilla which was flavorful and succulent, and priced fairly for the portion size. Everyone else loved their food as well. BUT the real thing that made this place stand out? The waitress offered to split the chips and guac across 5 bills. On the receipt it literally said "0.2 chips & guac". Either technology has come a long way or other waitstaff have been lying for years that they can't split items this much.

Jill W.

Yelp
Love everything about this place, ambiance, food and service. Can't wait to go back in the Spring!
google avatar

Tracy F.

Yelp
Come for the outdoor picnic tables and tap selection, including seasonal ciders and ginger/root beer. I do love root beer on tap. But, don't expect great food. They used to serve delicious tacos and queso - oh, the queso! Alas, those days are nothing but memories now. We've entered the guac visibly scooped from a tub era. Sad times, indeed.
google avatar

Yelp
TL;DR: Yard, your service is sinking rapidly. Be better. I love the Yard. I have lived in Greenwood for 4 years and this is an anchor to our community. However, something has changed: the service. I went in on my own for a snack and a drink and felt like a bother to the staff. I was not offered water or given a menu. When I did order food from memory, the waiter brought it over so sloppily that the salsa spilled all over the plate and table. No napkins and he left the pile of beer menus and coasters haphazardly on my table. Also, the music was so loud and depressing it bore a hole through my brain. Yard: you are amazing but man, what is this? Come on. Greenwood, we can do better.
google avatar

AJ M.

Yelp
Went for happy hour and it was a nice, casual spot with pretty good drinks and food. Nothing fancy, but a solid spot for some quick eats and a good drink. Enjoyed the outdoor patio, bartender was friendly.

Yelp
This is the spot! Prefunk, large parties, hang out before going out! Hey beers and bullshit! If your looking to watch the Seahawks game (nothing else) this is the spot! Now your wondering why I said ONLY Seahawks because the female behind the bar ripped my head off when I asked to put on the game that needed to win in order for the Seahawks to advance but she said NOPE not changing it and it's all the way over there on that TV! Was she moving me? NOPE so that wasn't going to happen! We had another encounter with a women who smashed one of our friends drink on the table Because she didn't know what he ordered when she said another one and then put it in! It ended up being the wrong drink. She got pissed bc he didn't remember the name, biotch we don't have the names memorized like you, it's your job to know, not ours! I know I'm being mean, but she was out right, NOT OK! I think me and my friend have a target on our back and they will never leave it down when we asked to watch the panthers game! Hahhaha Anywaysss it's not about that or them, they hire bad people or the people have bad attitudes. The food is pretty good, the beer selection is great and for a long day of shopping and hanging out downtown this is the spot to be. it's blocks from out home so we come here a lot! Stop on it, call to make reservations if you can!
