A Kouignn Amann Superstar Is About to Open A Second Bakery | Eater SF

"Fresh to Berkeley as the brand’s first California outpost, opened the first week of September, this sugar shack—debuted in 2017 and catapulted by a 2019 Shark Tank appearance—sets up on Telegraph Avenue with cookie dough scoops and lots of creamy goodness." - Dianne de Guzman

Google
The Yard TLDR: Overall: Fun, extremely sweet (although pricy) over-the-top milkshakes My Order: Brookie Batter Specialty Milkshake Price Breakdown: $23.90 (including tax, etc for a pricier one of the milkshake options) Portions: Enough to share one milkshake between two people Halal/Vegetarian Friendly: Not applicable, though dairy-wise there might be vegan options but I'm not 100% sure, do check on that! Would get again: I am very tempted to try the strawberry cheesecake or the oreo one, but probably would get the bowl instead of the milkshake next time. So this was one insane milkshake. After seeing pictures online of these over-the-top fantasy-esque milkshakes and realized there was a new location in Berkeley, I was very intrigued and finally made my way down. We got the specialty milkshake (mostly bc it comes with the souvenir glass that they let you clean and take home after) and I promise you this is enough for two people for sure. There were a lot of moving parts in our Brookie Batter Specialy Millshake, cookie dough icecream, a brownie, a cookie, lots of chocolate chips, a definitely very pretty dessert. This was a very sweet dessert (almost needed to wash down with water at some point) and we were incredibly full by the end of it, even when we shared it. The flavors were very fun at first, but as we continued, it did get a bit overwhelming and the tastes merged together a bit. The milkshake part ended up being a bit more refreshing than the rest of it. And unfortunately but understandably the price is quite a bit steep for the milkshake, but this was a very complex treat with lots of different components that made it a bit more worth it. The staff was also lovely and helpful in getting utensils and choosing a milkshake. Overall, definitely not trying to be a regular here (for the sake of my health 😅), but will be back to try the other flavors (in bowl form) at some point. I may add a star if the oreo one fulfills my heart's desires.

Google
Very great place to go with friends and share a sundae or milkshake! Great selection of ice creams, fun shakes, and even edible cookie dough! They even offer cashew milk ice cream for those who need vegan options.

Google
Walked in during the soft opening, and was blown away by the ambience. Owners were on deck and super friendly along with the whole staff. Huge amount of options from single scoop ice cream, to cookie dough, sundaes, and their specialty shakes. Ended up going with their Berkeley special, the Mango Sassy Lassi, and tasted authentic with hints of cardamom and a nice touch of salted pistachio on the edges. Lots of space to sit and hang out with friends, and store had a nice rustic look to it. Shake had Blue Bell ice cream which was rich and not too heavy and got to even keep the mason jar at the end after using their jar wash station. Will definitely be back to try their other flavors, and bring family and friends when they are in town to experience their shakes!

Google
Amazing place! The specialty bowls and shakes are fabulous. Tasty and generous portions. The staff is really friendly and seems to be having fun. We went on a Wednesday night and the manager helped us with our order-really helpful and friendly!

Google
Ice cream was beautiful and very delicious. The Yard has so many fun and creative options of what sweets to try here. Very delicious and me and my friend are definitely coming back! 🍦 Excellent service and kind staff as well :)

Google
TL;DR Rude staff, horrible business model, insane prices. Do not come here expectating the happy-go-lucky ice cream experience with friends or on a date. I paid 20 dollars for a medium single flavor milkshake. With barely any toppings. I came here with my girlfriend for a night on the town and immediately upon entering we were barked at by an extremely angry staff member to order using the singular soulless kiosk to order ice cream at the other end of the room. We paid the same price for a full tank of gas for a very disappointing milkshake with literally two toppings while we felt anxiously crowded by the 50 people in line behind us waiting to order on the machine instead of with a staff member. The bar seemingly offered no samples which is ridiculous considering they have a wide arrangement of ice cream flavors. Making it very difficult to even decide on anything. It was all around just a terrible ice cream parlor experience. Zero friendly communication with the staff, zero nice date night vibes, terrible terrible TERRIBLE ice cream to price ratio. I think if you are a young college student from another country you would think this is fine and normal, but as it stands - an absolute dumpster fire of an ice cream place. Instead try: Cream, Little Gem Belgian Waffles, Insomnia Cookies

Google
Super overpriced. The staff are nice- and I will say that they didn’t recommend the shake I got, but I got it anyway 😭. It was 23 dollars for a massive sundae thing. I doubt it’ll stay open once everyone’s tried it.

Google
Had their cookie dough milkshake - it was absolutely incredible!! Thick, creamy and flavors were spot on! They have great vegan options as well!

Yelp
[Plays song lyric] My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard (literally). The Yard Milkshake Bar in Berkeley just had their grand opening on 9/5 and they'll be offering free cookie dough scoops all weekend long! With their location being just steps away from UC Berkeley's campus combined with being a new establishment to the city, you already know there will be lines. This is the first location in California. If you've never been to The Yard before, they're known for making elaborate and over the top milkshakes. They also have a huge variety of ice cream and cookie dough to choose from. Each location is known to put their own little spin on the decorations inside and this Berkeley location kept the rustic feel but has a mural designed by a local artist! I thought that was a nice touch. The staff were super friendly and patient with our questions. I was looking over the menu and thought everything was reasonably priced (some would argue that it's too expensive for what it is). They offer scooped ice cream, grab and go ice cream, regular milkshakes, specialty milkshakes, edible cookie dough, and specialty (ice cream) bowls. Note: if you order the specialty milkshake or an edible cookie dough pint, you get to keep the mason jar! A nice souvenir for sure and they even have a jar washing station for you to clean it prior to leaving so you're not stuck with holding a sticky jar. There are two menu exclusive items that you can only find at this Berkeley location: the Mango Sassy Lassi shake and the more secret item being the Cal Bear Shake, which is cookies n cream ice cream with Nutella drizzle, chocolate icing rim with teddy grahams lining the rim. I opted for two scoops of ice cream and a scoop of cookie dough to share. After ordering, we were looking for a place to sit. There were limited numbers of tables. They did have standing counters but we didn't feel like standing. We took ours to go, walked around, and it was a great time. The ice cream was rich, creamy, flavorful, and perfect - everything you expect in a high quality ice cream! Did not have the cookie dough bc my SO ate it all without sharing, so that should be enough to tell you how good it was! There are so many combinations of ice cream you can do and so many variations of milkshakes that are offered! I'll definitely be back to try a different thing next time.

Yelp
I have been eyeing this place since it opened in September and finally got to visit with some friends. We all got ice cream and it was delicious! I got a half pint with cotton candy and cake batter, topped with rainbow sprinkles. The Yard has a wide variety of ice cream flavors, I was honestly overwhelmed trying to choose. I will be returning to try more flavors very soon. Their menu as a whole was plentiful. They have anything sweet from cookie dough to loaded milkshakes. We came around 9 pm and there was only one server working, she was very kind and quick. The Yard has a seating all along the right wall, perfect for us to sit and hangout. The prices are a little high but nothing crazy. The ice cream is creamy and flavorful so I can't complain. The Yard is nicely decorated with soft lighting and a beautiful mural, great for some pictures. I definitely recommend coming here for a sweet treat!

Yelp
The Yard Milkshake Bar opened recently in one of the commercial units on the ground floor of Enclave Dormitory. Interior totally new with some seating adjacent to a wall. Also some murals. Offerings on wall behind counter: special bowls, ice cream scoops, edible cookie dough, cashew ice cream, milkshakes + sundaes, loaded pint milkshakes. Greeted & served soon after entering. Server explained many options & it's contents. Pd. Shake ready in 5ish minutes. Not busy. Licks: loaded pint milkshake-coffee N. Cream (13). -coffee ice cream, whipped cream, Oreo crumbles & cream cheesecake ice cream seen/tastes. Chocolate fudge drizzle & half & half not as much. -shake initially wasn't too sweet. When other items were mixed in, it became sweeter. Whipped cream mixed last. 4.5 stars semi-worth:YMMV Quality: premium ingredients. Quantity: reasonable. **Yard Milkshake Bar appeared on Shark Tank.

Yelp
I'd like to give credit to the staff. Being that this was our 1st time here, the menu was overwhelming. There were no physical menus, just pictures flashing across the monitor with limited descriptions. Which means as a customer, I had questions. No only were the staff helpful, they were engaging with my young son. We felt welcomed. The atmosphere was nice. The background music was good. The restaurant was clean and they had a nice variety of icecream flavors to choose from. Nowadays everything is pricey. But if you can afford a few extra dollars to spend, I think this is a really good place to try out. I'd consider it a local alternative to the milkshakes at Sugar Factory Las Vegas.

Yelp
Got a brownie strawberry quart size, and boy was it grubbin'. Probably a new fave whenever I come back here. Still really expensive for a shake but enjoyed it. Had an accident and lost half of my drink but staff made me a little more. Though I wished they made me a new one, I was happy that I didn't completely lose out.

Yelp
Really good quality milkshake but definitely on the expensive side. The cookies and cream milkshake was thick and creamy with really good quality chocolate/milkshake base. We went on a Friday night and the staff was definitely busy fulfilling orders. You order through the kiosk and wait for your order. There wasn't much seating by the time we got there but was lucky enough to snag the last table. The place wasn't super clean, probably due to the large amount of people going in and out and the busy staff. Overall, if you're a milkshake fan and indifferent to price, this is an amazing place.

Yelp
Very delicious milkshakes and ice cream! So many flavors and mixed flavors to choose from by I loved the sweet pralines shake and the peanut butter ice cream. Some shakes are quite large so beware of what you are ordering. Prices are on the higher side so you may want to consider that before placing an order. My only complaint is the lack of service, no one was working at a fast pace leading to long wait times and long lines to place an order. Some people left the restaurant without their item.
google avatar

Alex D.

Yelp
The shake was SO GOOD - one of the best I've ever had! Can't wait to have another. Their whipped cream recipe could use an adjustment as it tastes overly sweet and not like the freshly whipped kind from other places. Inside was sparkling clean! Ambience was a little dead but it was mid afternoon. One more area for improvement is the menu - there's one kiosk that you have to order from, but it doesn't have photos (very important for such fancy and descriptive milkshakes and sundaes) so I tried referencing the big screens but they kept flashing through different pages. I also wanted to sample the ice creams which I think you can do but there was only one associate making other orders and a sign asking you to go to the kiosk for ordering so that part didn't seem welcoming. Otherwise it's still a great addition to Telegraph!

Yelp
I was strolling Telegraph grabbing takeout for dinner and I walked past this dessert joint. I recently saw a reel about sweet spot that is smack dabbed on the middle Telegraph sprawl. There was a minimal line so i decided to check it out. They have lots of creative flavored shakes and also pre made mason jar desserts to take out. I had ordered the Cereal Killer strawberry shake with Fruity pebbles and marshmallow ganache. The shake it self was pricey but it was a super sweet, probably enough to share for 2 people. You can also can order individual scoops of ice cream if having a large pint of Ice cream and or shakes isn't your thing. People whom work here are friendly and helpful. Definitely a place to try if you're into "sweet" something after lunch or dinner.

Yelp
Cool new ice cream spot! Our friends got the Sassy Lassi sundae and loved it. I got the Strawberries & Cream sundae but was not a fan of the flavor of ice cream (too dry - I think it's from the cheesecake mixed in). The entire slice of cheesecake included was honestly impressive though. My husband got the plain strawberry ice cream with a scoop of cookie dough and that was great - perfect texture! They're the only place in the Bay Area that I know of that has Blue Bell ice cream, so if you're a fan of that brand, check them out! Service was good. It was super busy on Friday night right before close but they were still pretty fast with the orders. I'll definitely come back and try out different flavors/combos of ice cream.

Yelp
Amazing experience. The staff a great group of young humans! The cream is so worth all the calories! I had the cereal killer! It was delicious! Since it was our first time we all go a keepsake jar! Sean is the MGR and he came around to all the patrons and asking how they like the ice cream, he is fantastic and very personable. I loved that he stopped and talked with everyone. The shop itself is set up very well and is very Instagram worthy!

Yelp
I happened to be around the area and stumbled across this place. The menu was a little overstimulating. I had trouble choosing. I ended up going with the peanut butter brownie. I wanted to get the mason jar since it was a little souvenir for you to keep but, decided to go with a cup instead. The ice cream was okay, but nicely presented. A little on the pricey side, but I did order their premium ice cream. Staff were nice and the place is small. Limited seating. I'd come back.

Yelp
Right in the heart of college town sits this ice cream milkshake business. I had been following their posts on FB and was surprised that they had been open a few days already (soft launch). They officially opened September 5th. Being on vacation I decided that ice cream for breakfast is ok. I took the 15 minute drive to Berkeley and actually found a parking spot near by. The place was just about empty when I walked in. Good for me...no wait in line! It was very clean and had old school music playing over the speaker. Very cool and welcoming vibe. The gentleman running the shop was nice. Not very talkative. When I had a question he would answer. Other than that...silent. The menu board is very vibrant and makes you want to order everything they had advertised. There's other things besides milkshakes. I went out on a limb and ordered a BASIC milkshake. That's out of my league but hey, I'm on vacation so why not? I tried my favorite ice cream flavor...butter pecan. $12.24 later I had my milkshake with whipped cream on top. Super excited to try something new like a kid Iin a candy store. They have super thick straws so you can enjoy every sip. Thinking the milkshake was thick I took a hard sip on the straw and almost choked on a pecan. It, surprisingly, went straight down my throat. The flavor was delicious! Unfortunately, it was not as thick as I had expected. All of the pecans sat on the bottom of the cup. When I was finished I had to scoop them out with the straw. Well, that was that. My milkshake lasted approx 7 mins Enough time to try it, choke on a pecan, finish it and make it back to my car! Try The Yard...I hope you enjoy it when you do! I gave it because I couldn't give it 3.5!

Yelp
I love a silly and gimmicky dessert shop, so I was really disappointed with The Yard. The menu is huge and creative and exciting, but the actual product is seriously overpriced. It'll photograph well, but I'm also paying for quality, and the ice cream was below average. Additionally, both items ordered by me and my friend were 50% whipped cream (and not good whipped cream: more like the cheapest whipped cream canister you could find at target). The specialty bowl is supposed to come with cookie dough, as well, and I guess it did - we were blessed with one teaspoon sized ball that perched alongside the mountain of whipped cream. For the other toppings, there were perhaps 3 gummy worms, a few marshmallows, and a bit of chocolate sauce. This guy was $17 with tip! We also ordered a mini cookie dough ice cream thing, which was $10 with tip, and less disappointing because it wasn't presented as a fabulous sundae full of joy, but also for $10 it was such a little guy. The place wasn't too busy at 8pm on a Friday, but I imagine it gets more traffic as the night progresses. No bathroom, but plenty of seating.

Yelp
I stopped by The Yard Milkshake Bar on Telegraph to check it out for the first time. It's a newer place that serves those trendy, over‑the‑top milkshakes topped with things like a slice of cheesecake, doughnuts, candy, and whipped cream -- very Instagram‑ready. But I just wanted something simple: two scoops of ice cream. Unfortunately, my experience was pretty disappointing. The line was long, and the staff seemed very unorganized. Even with about six people working behind the counter, no one greeted or acknowledged customers waiting. It was a busy Saturday night, but still -- a simple "We'll be right with you" goes a long way. Instead, the staff avoided eye contact, and it wasn't clear how to even place an order. I eventually found out you have to order and pay at the register and wait for your number to be called, but no one explained that upfront. When I finally ordered two scoops (salted caramel and chocolate), my name was skipped. After waiting longer than expected, I approached the counter again, and they found my order just sitting behind them -- but it wasn't what I ordered. They had blended my ice cream into a milkshake even though I specifically asked for two scoops. The ice cream itself was fine, nothing special -- definitely not worth the long wait or confusion. The place seems focused more on flashy, gimmicky desserts than on quality service or organization. It might be fun for kids or tourists looking for a novelty photo, but it's not somewhere I'd return.

Yelp
Lots of selection but it all tastes freezer-burn-ey. I asked for a simple milkshake and they added an awful chocolate sauce without asking me.

Dylan B.

Yelp
Such unique flavors... The boogie monster is great! Super cool vibes and a ton of new unique flavors

Yelp

Yelp
Went with my family while we were visiting the area, the staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. My daughter took full advantage of the samples offered and we enjoyed what we ordered. The owners were at the shop as they had recently opened, they were so kind and made sure our daughter was enjoying the experience as well!

Garrett B.

Yelp
Excellent milkshakes and a fun atmosphere. Definitely a great place to get a special dessert. Super close to other shops in Berkeley, so it's easy to walk to the store. Friendly staff, and the owner was handing out samples the day we went. Super fun!

Maeve L.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream spot! They have a lot of variety in their menu - something for everyone. The location is great and the staff is incredibly friendly. They also have great allergen practices, making it easy for those with food allergies to get a safe treat. Will definitely be coming back!

Amy B.

Yelp
Would love to have ordered here but the staff member purposely ignored us and greeted the customers who came in the store after us. Looked delicious, but I'll take my business where it is welcome.

Adeline J.

Yelp
The yard has the most amazing milkshakes. I love their cookie dough. I love the brookie dough and the Oreo sundae and the dunkadoo dough.

Leila A.

Yelp
Very good ice cream loved the ambiance and the beautifully curated craft of the ice cream yay yay

Ethan G.

Yelp
Wow-absolutely incredible! Bursting with flavor, this might be the best place I've ever visited. Honestly left me speechless, better than even the Grimace shake or matcha. Truly unforgettable!

Aidan S.

Yelp
Rude staff incredibly over priced payed $23 for a mid sundae that was basically a milkshake even though I did not ask for a milk shake

Sunny R.

Yelp
We were surprised to see this place on our trip to Berkeley today. We had great memories having a unicorn milkshake in Austin Texas years ago. We tried the mermaid shake and it definitely hit the spot. You can't go wrong with Cookie Monster ice cream! The place was well staffed and they were super nice as well. The restaurant itself is clean and well lit inside. Pricing wasn't much more than what we paid years ago in Austin. We can't wait to go back.

Chantal B.

Yelp
It looks like a great spot so we surprised my milkshake loving 13 year old and brought him for his birthday. When I confirmed that his preferred shake didn't have peanuts (he's allergic), they proceeded to tell me to sign a waiver to ensure I wouldn't sue if something happened. I happily signed and then the manager told me they couldn't make him a shake since they couldn't be held liable (even though I signed a waiver). I understand the need to protect/keep safe customers. But if you're just serving milkshakes it feels like there should be a way to provide them to all who order. We left frustrated and disappointed. For people without allergies - I imagine it's a terrific experience.

Serayah O.

Yelp
10/10 customer service! Very nice workers and delicious milkshakes! My friend has an allergy and they made sure to accommodate to her needswe love you guys

Erin F.

Yelp
this place had great milkshakes and was so delicious the price was very reasonable and there was many flavors to choose from the price was amazing and there is crazy and regular ones if you stick with the OG's all equally delicious

Trinity B.

Yelp
Great customer service; allowed us to try multiple flavors! Also they were very welcoming & friendly. Many places to sit inside & cute decorations to take picture.

Saikiran N.

Yelp
Great milkshakes, great service! Interior design is also very new and modern. Would recommend to anyone in Berkeley.

Crazy B.

Yelp
owners were super nice and allowed modifications. the milkshakes were very good and not too heavy.
