Where to Eat in Vista | Eater San Diego

"On one hand, The Yellow Deli is a global chain of down home restaurants, all tied to a Christian sect called the Twelve Tribes that started in Tennessee, has been labeled a cult multiple times across the world, and has even been raided in the US and abroad for child endangerment and child labor concerns. On the other hand, The Yellow Deli in Vista is a nice, lovely, local restaurant that serves a great mix of from-the-farm (in this case, Twelve Tribes’ Morning Star Ranch up highway 15 in Valley Center) sandwiches, salads, and breakfasts 24 hours a day during the week (they’re closed on weekends). The surroundings and staff are very charming, but you’ll have to decide for yourself whether The Yellow Deli’s proprietors are a cult or just people trying to go their own way." - Mike Schramm

Stopped by The Yellow Deli and was really impressed! The chipotle chicken sandwich was super fresh and a generous portion — definitely worth the price. The avocado was the standout — perfectly ripe and buttery — and the sourdough bread was absolutely top-notch. Highly recommend the fresh papaya juice — it comes served in a frosty mug and hits the spot, especially on a warm day. Refreshing and unique! The atmosphere is incredibly inviting with plenty of shaded areas to sit and relax. The rustic design adds the overall charm. That said, you better not be in a hurry — the service runs on a very relaxed timeline. It’s not fast food, but that kind of adds to the charm if you’re not in a rush. Only (half-joking) disappointment? No sign of any cult-like activity while I was there — unless you count the religious pamphlets left out for people to take. All in all, a great spot with delicious food and a memorable ambiance.

Place is very cute and peaceful. We had a warm turkey sandwich and a strawberry smoothy. All was delicious. I ordered a reuben sandwich to go smells yummy.

Google
I’ve loved this place for years. After coming back into town after a couple years I stopped by and it’s still amazing. They’ve changed their menu up a little but it was seriously so good.

Google
We stopped here on our way to San Diego… the restaurant was beautiful and the sandwiches were delicious! It’s definitely worth the stop if you’re in the area. My only complaint… service was a bit slow, but friendly.

Google
Just the koolest little joint, amazing architecture and atmosphere and the best chicken sandwich I’ve ever had. The staff was also really friendly

Google
My first time here & the ranch chicken sandwich was 2 thumbs up! It’s their most popular sandwich for a reason. The place reminds me of the setting for the Lord of the Rings. Servers are attentive & personable

Google
Wonderful breakfast sandwich and hot matcha with honey! Gentle and magical atmosphere to unwind and enjoy the morning. Make sure to visit the little shop next door for fresh baked goods and a few bottles of their refreshing ,yerba mate green juices ! I only gave 4 stars for service due to it taking a while for anyone to come to get our order in.

Google
1st time here. Unfortunately I was not hungry but came along for the ride. I really loved there Mango Mate. It's mango juice with a type of tea called mate. It was very refreshing. With and son had a roast beef and Pastrami sandwich which I tasted was good.

Yelp
This place is wonderful. Stepping in here is like traveling back to a much more simple and peaceful time. It's beautiful here. Both the decor and architecture will leave you in awe as you take in each room and its unique atmosphere. The staff has always been friendly and professional. The food has been a bit of a hit and miss but I eventually found some items that have been pretty good consistently. I love the vibes of this place more than the menu personally but recommend it to anyone. It's a truly unique place to visit at least once! Chicken on the Ranch sandwich is my favorite. Has chipotle chicken, havarti cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, mayo, their Special Spicy Sauce, feta ranch spread on a kaiser roll. I've also tried the Vista Way Chicken Sandwich and the Reuben. Those were decent. The egg and cheese breakfast sandwich is simple and tasty. The egg has a nice fluffy texture and the cheese comes melted on a perfectly toasted bun. Mango mate drink is delicious! Chili isn't my fave. Has beans which I don't like and a chunks of tomatoes which makes it a bit sweet rather than savory. Waffles here are pretty good.

Yelp
Came here on a Thursday night to order takeout and it was pretty busy! If you've never visited the restaurant, the place itself is super cool and a nice place to sit down and get work done. Lots of cozy spots. The workers are also very friendly! I recommend calling in for to go to make things quicker. Got the pastrami sandwich and I thought it was okay- a bit greasy and soggy for me in my opinion, but still tasted good. It came with chips and a pickle as well. Size of the sandwich is quite small for $13. I'd say the ambiance of the place and the service is what makes up for the food. Will definitely be back to work and grab one of their lattes next time!

Yelp
Oh boy... Where do I even start? If you know me, you know I somehow always end up discovering the organic, holistic gems that feel like they were hiding in plain sight. This place? A total find -- and turns out they have multiple locations, which means this is just the beginning. We tried the green tea chai, and wow... it was smooth, earthy, and surprisingly addictive. The breakfast sandwich was delicious -- like, genuinely satisfying without trying too hard. Then came the ginger cookie -- OMG. Soft, spicy, and just the right amount of sweet. And the spinach quiche? Light, flavorful, and comforting in that slow-Sunday-morning kind of way. We wanted to go back for more, but they closed at 3PM, which was the only sad part of the whole experience. The kind of place you wish stayed open just a little longer because everything on the menu tastes like it's made with purpose.

Yelp
My friend took me here on my visit to San Diego as a surprise! It's definitely an experience and good to know the history of this place as well. The service low-key veryyy slow but the sandwiches are surprisingly quite good! The interior also is very unique and has tavern vibes. Also Peace Patience Kindness (if you know you know) definitely try this place out at least once!

Yelp
The Yellow Deli is a really cute cabin-like 2-storey restaurant. I've been there a few times for work-related meetings and always enjoyed my wholesome meals. I felt like I owe it to the Yelp Community to leave a review about my foodie experience. Recently, I ordered the juiciest breakfast sandwich I've ever had. I also tried their hot apple cider for the first time and loved it on this cloudy morning. I just wish the staff interacted with me more instead of me being the initiator.

Yelp
Best waffle I've tasted and great maple syrup as well. They do all from scratch our server said. The wood work in the restaurant is very pretty. Oh and they have a lift! An elevator for handicap/wheelchair walkers etc. Doors were locked so we couldn't get in the restaurant from the elevator but my husband knocked for a bit and someone came and said no one told him we were coming up. Person downstairs said they were gonna meet us up there but never did. But we got in so no big deal. Hubby got soup and that day it was broccoli cheddar. It was ok. Not a repeat. That artisan bread though, so good!. Garden (veggie) burger with chips n pickle. Was soft not crispy. Ppl like then different ways. I prefer a crisp. Too much bread for the thin patty. Rest of ingredients were delish though. I'd skip the garden burger. PS, I'm a Mayo gal so I said no mustard but once I tasted the Mayo (seemed homemade so probably healthier but no flavor and oily) and the burger I'm like oh ok they knew what they were doing not putting the Mayo on the sandwich, it is listed on menu as coming with mustard and it is better with mustard not mayo so I didn't use the mayo but instead used mustard packages they gave me. Still not a repeat sandwich thought. Came with kettle chips and pickle or mini soup. The lady that helped us was so nice. Green drink was yummy. I chose orange for it. Came in plastic bottle and made with stevia it says. So heads up. But she said it was made on their farm. Didn't know the restaurant had a farm. Parking in front.

Yelp
The place is really fun with its treehouse decor. The service is kind of slow, but the waitstaff is always pleasant. I usually order a sandwich. It is always delicious. But the quantity of the meat on the sandwich seems to be getting less and less with eat visit. Another thing about the sandwich is that the bread always too wet to pick up. I have to ask for a fork and knife. Anyway, I still love the restaurant and will come back.

Yelp
Yellow Deli is a charming mix of Winnie the Pooh, Thunder Mountain at Disneyland, and The Shire from Lord of the Rings. Really loved the cozy setting, and perfect place to come enjoy a hot tea and desserts. We had the French Pressed Rooibos and Mocha Mint Maté. Desserts pictured were Persimmon Pound Cake and Carrot Cake, both of which are great choices. Only downside was the service, our server only cared to ask for our order and bring us the check, for as fun an environment, could be more cordial.

Yelp
I always love coming to this quaint cozy little spot in the heart of vista. You'll be taken back by the comfortable atmosphere, friendly greetings and healthy comfort foods. I love their rotations on soups, they have outstanding bread that comes with it. Sandwiches are a stable and the Ruben is my favorite. Lastly, they have a persimmon smoothie that is my usual desert. Service is always quick and responsive. They take great care of their guests. Enjoy!

Yelp
It's always an interesting time at The Yellow Deli. My daughter's 's like to bring their friends to this little eatery in Vista. It has such a unique atmosphere and if you sit upstairs, you sort of get the feeling that you're in an enchanted little treehouse. I really enjoy their veggie burger. They make the patties themselves. I'm also a huge fan of their green drinks, especially the lemon ginger one and seasonal pomegranate variety, I and love the green bars. The rest of my family really like the sandwiches and mate' drinks.

Yelp
Love the sandwiches in this place, and the ambience! Service could be better... it's hella packed on Mondays too just fyi! Can't go wrong with any of the food cuz it's fresh

Yelp
I LOVE the food at Yellow Deli!!!! This is the kind of place you go once and then always crave. A co worker mentioned it to me weeks ago and then, it was all I could think about. It was my first time back in over 4 years, but I will say, this place has always stuck with me. It's unique, and the food is FRESH. Like fresh off their own farm fresh. This visit, I ordered the Deli Rose (toss up between this, and the Reuben) and a bowl of chili, and a mug of root beer which comes with an icy cold mug. (We were in early afternoon on a week day) from what I understand they sometimes run out of the chili) We also ordered a basket of chips as a starter. Chips are fresh made. You have two options for chili, a cup or a bowl. The BOWL is served with a small loaf of fresh baked Jalapeño bread and butter. (Please keep in mind this chili is LOADED with tender beef, big chunks) From my experience the service has been kind. Not over the top, but kind. Not FAST but not to complain about because the food is so fresh. They keep it simple. Do not go here if you expect extravagant service: not the place for you. If you do some research on the building these folks, they built EVERYTHING themselves, wood work, iron work, EVERYTHING. Please do not judge them on their beliefs!!! This is a common comment I'm noticing. Live and let live. Their food is BOMB. Thank you Yellow Deli for your peaceful environment and your amazing fresh cooked food. You have a supporter of your restaurant for life.

Yelp
Just beautiful. I came in yesterday with one of my girlfriends and it was just a perfect place for her and I to have lunch. It's like stepping into Swiss family Robinson. The food is so good. The soup was amazing. Bread was not of this world... so fresh all made by them. I'm gonna try to come at least once a month. It's adorable.

Yelp
Green juice is good. Poached eggs and toast is good too! Service is super slow!!!! Don't de in any kind of plan to do anything because they just get to you when they get to you, lol! .

Yelp
I was brought here by my grandma originally, and I have been coming here ever since. I'm hooked! The food is absolutely delicious, the vibes are tavern meets hippie. I have mad respect for the iron and woodworking skills that went into crafting the entire building. Props for having gluten free bread - and it's actually delicious! My boyfriend (not celiac) tried the GF bread and actually prefers that to the regular bread, so he gets the GF one! It can take a hot minute to get your order and the check, but it's honestly such a vibe that you may enjoy the ambiance and your company (if you brought some). The food is always phenomenal, and the staff are polite. This is one of my favorite places for a good high-quality comfort food, especially during a rainy day with a good book.

Yelp
I loved the detail of the architecture with its handmade tables and chairs that were not only comfortable but very rustic and beautiful to look at. A deli wouldn't be a deli if it didn't make sandwiches and soups and my Ruben and my friend's soup were both excellent. The staff was attentive and and knew when you wanted them and when to leave us to enjoy the atmosphere. Mark S. (Oceanside)

Yelp
If you don't have allergies disregard this review!! So background info: I am someone with food allergies, Soy, Dairy, and wheat. I often don't go out to eat anymore unless the restaurant mentions food allergies and catering to them. On the yellow deli's menu and website multiple times they state they are able to do their best to cater to allergies. When we arrived I explained my allergies to our waiter who said very little and overall gave very little reassurance that the food would be safe. when the food came out without a hitch I did not trust it, and went to another waiter to have him double check the food. The second waiter was very responsive and kind which made me feel much better, but unfortunately I could tell he didn't know much about food allergies. After a lot awkward back and forth (basically asking to check each ingredient each time) I got my food. But the process took over an hour before I got to eat. I really don't blame the waiters!! I just don't think they have gotten absolutely any training on allergies, and therefore it should not be advertised that they can accommodate allergies.

Yelp
Staff here is really nice. Picked up a banana bread and a cinnamon raisin walnut loaf. I found the banana bread to be alright, not too sweet but a little over done on the bottom. The cinnamon raisin walnut loaf was also not sugary, I used it for avocado toast and was really pleased. I got here later in the evening and it was just a small area with the baked goods available, I think they have a larger area open during other times. Will have to try them again.

Yelp
I like the food here, lots of vegan and vegetarian options, but the service is usually very slow, so be prepared and don't come too hungry. The prices are amazing though! Super affordable. For 3 people to eat, it only cost $59. The inside of this place is so cool...made of all wood that looks hand carved, and knitting that looks done by hand, too. It is cold inside during the winter, so bring a sweater! They also have outside seating, if you want.
google avatar

Aini D.

Yelp
Had such a lovely meal at The Yellow Deli with my family. The ingredients were incredibly fresh and the portions were generous. Every dish tasted like it was made with so much care. The banana milkshake especially stood out. I never imagined something so simple could be that flavorful. We also brought home their famous bread to share with friends from church. It felt nourishing in more ways than one. My dad once spoke with someone at the deli about how much he loved the bread, and they kindly gave him some of their yeast to try baking it at home. That meant a lot to us. Thank you for your kindness and for sharing so much through your food. Wishing you all the best, always.

Yelp
Came for the cozy sandwiches, stayed for the accidental cult recruitment attempt. Atmosphere: 6/10. Cozy until you realize you're brunching inside a live cult. Service: Very polite. Possibly plotting my spiritual abduction. Food: 7/10. Would've enjoyed it more if I wasn't planning my escape route between bites. Did I accidentally join a doomsday commune for a free pickle? Probably. Would I morally object? Yes. Would I demolish that fresh homemade bread and farm-grown tomato while googling if I was about to be kidnapped? Also yes.

Rachel R.

Yelp
This place has some of the most delicious food we've ever had at a restaurant. Emmett was a great server and shared with us the story of the paintings on the exterior of the restaurant. The Yellow Deli is not just a place to eat great food but a rich experience as well!
google avatar

Brenda T.

Yelp
If you are in a hurry don't come here but the food is worth the wait. The Yellow Deli is a beautiful space in downtown Vista. Clearly the people here take pride in their work. It's super clean and the plants are well taken care of. The food is always fresh and delicious. The drinks are yummy too (no alcohol is served). Came here again with my oldest and I was able to try their salmon chowder. My daughter was right, best soup I've ever had. Their chef salad is delicious. All their bread is yummy. The hot apple cider I had today was tasty and kept my hands warm (we were seated outside it was quite busy). This review is all over the place but I was combining food I've had at past visits. This is the kind of place where you can't go wrong with anything on the menu!
google avatar

Yelp
Solid sandwiches anytime out of the year. I get them to go frequently and they're always delicious!

Yelp
1. Items: Deli Rose, Vista Way, Green Matte, and house dressing. 2. Atmosphere: Cottage ish, good study space if sitting inside 3. Parking: 10/10 This place can get pretty full on the weekends and evenings. Thankfully, when we showed up on Sunday around 3:30pm, we got a table right away. Outdoor seating is beautiful. Music is very folk... not an issue at all but, next time I'll be sure NOT to sit next to the speaker though.... Both sandwiches were equally as flavorful and messy. Service can be pretty quick, however, I'd suggest ordering everything at the same time. (Yes, including dessert) I've been coming here for years and I still have many pastries/ drinks to try.

Anissa O.

Yelp
My garden burger was particularly scrumpdiliciosoo! A late night yellow deli run always hits the spot.

Allison G.

Yelp
Must have a man bun and beard to work here for free, allegedly. Food is good bc bread and soups are homemade. I have reservations about supporting the twelve tribes after researching and learning about their history. Not a good look that allegedly all of their restaurants are near college campuses.
google avatar

Bryan A.

Yelp
The fact that they are open 24 hours during the week is quite impressive. This is the most unique place you can go to in Vista. The food is just ok and the servers are sweet and do their best. I hope they stay in Vista forever! PS they are temporarily closed until Oct 28 2024.
google avatar

Yelp
Took the wife and kids here. We loved it. Food is good quality with wonderful staff too! The place is decorated nicely.

Yelp
Excellent place to visit, at least once. The venue is very interesting. Wood interiors are amazing. Intricate and amusing. Service is good and food was excellent. Very fresh.

Yelp
Such a cute place, with a nice relaxing ambiance and good food. I had the veggie burger as it came recommendd by someone in my group. It was good, but a different bun would have been better as it's not a thick burger. The bun overwhelmed it a little. The kettle chips were thick & nice and crunchy. One of my other friends got the same but with salmon chowder that she said was really good. Everything is made to order so it's a little slower. We sat outside and enjoyed the garden space.
google avatar

Jazmine P.

Yelp
I stopped by with a friend this past weekend and we both got chilli! It was super good! the bread was heavenly with butter :') 10/10 The wait time was a little long but worth it!

Yelp
ths is a cult they will try to recruit you to it. if your not white they will be racist. trust me and if you dont believe me search 12 tribes on youtube. so please dont go

Yelp
This is one of those places I've been meaning to try for years but just never got around to it. After trying a sister location (Maté Factor) in Savannah, GA, I figured I might as well finally try The Yellow Deli. Pros: - Super fresh ingredients - Great baked goods - Cool, whimsical setting and decor Cons: - Service was a bit slow; took us ten minutes to get seated despite there being plenty of open tables. Weird. - Your money goes to a religious community and not the volunteers that work here. Maybe that bothers you, maybe not. Worth mentioning nonetheless. Yours truly had the Deli Rose sandwich (roast beef, corned beef and veggies in an onion roll) and it was great! Came with a side of chips and a fresh pickle. They also have a pretty full menu of teas and beverages and, of course, their (sort of) famous baked goods inside.
google avatar

Taylor M.

Yelp
Would have been 5 stars if it was not mmm potentially cultish. The best blueberry muffin i've had fresh and warm out the oven but the ominous undertones of 'we will get you eventually' kept me from being able to fully enjoy my time. Beautiful restaurant tho, nice staff (minus the occasional 'religious community' speak). I can see myself going back for food if i am ever in the area.
google avatar

Stephanie T.

Yelp
Had a much more timely experience this time around. Typically, it seems like I'll be here for at least 2 hours as they're very slow. This time however was much better with the time it took to get seat, take the order, bring food and bring the check. The only issue was that the waitress who gave us our food switched the orders and as I was eating my chips and pickle, he ate most of my sandwich as he forgot what he ordered and of course I realized it as soon as I got into mine. The place has a really nice decor and a nice outside seating area where you can bring your pup.

Yelp
The Yellow Deli (vista) employees are super friendly, and the atmosphere is way chill ! As you can see in the many interior photos posted by yelpers! Coffee is good. Food is average to slightly above average, but who cares, because the atmosphere is so chill, which is why people come here. 4.5 stars.
google avatar

Yelp
I have heard of The Yellow Deli for many years now, and bought their green juice anytime I go to any farmers market around San Diego, so I was excited to finally explore the actual restaurant. This place is totally worth the drive to Vista! The decor is amazing!! It looks like you are in a tree house, and they even have a fireplace. It was raining the day we went, and they even had their fire going, so it was extra cozy. The food is excellent as well! They are a commune so all the food is freshly grown. The menu is simple, and yet everything was incredible. My husband and I split the soup, a side, salad, and a create your own sandwich. Everything we ate was super fresh and flavored perfectly. He got an iced tea and I got a green juice! Both were amazing. The service is also really great. The employees who work there or go out of their way to make you feel at home at this restaurant. This place is a fun vibe with great food! What more can you want?

Yelp
Food was alright. Ambiance was kinda odd, but the actual restaurant itself is quite beautiful. Worth checking out!

Yelp
Such an amazing experience! It's so fun to dine in a treehouse, and the food was incredible. The service was good, and the menu had options for all of our unique dietary choices. Delicious!

Yelp
The location is beautiful! The craftsmanship of the architecture of the establishment is impressive! I've heard the workers make their own ingredients as well! Food was good, servers were super nice and welcoming, and prices were fair.

Yelp

Yelp
My friend took me here because she thought everyone should dine here once I was impressed with the decor and ambiance. We dined late last week and there was about a 15 minute wait. They took us upstairs at their Tea Bar and we were completely ignored after standing for 5 minutes with no one else waiting. We were asked what we wanted and we said tea (it was a Tea Bar) but he just went about his busyness without another word. We decided to sit down and order tea when we got seated. Once seated all those who served us were very attentive and friendly I ordered the featured soup #WhiteBeanKale which was tasty and their #WholeGrainSourdough was delicious I ordered #DeliRose and can see why it's a favorite here Packed with pastrami, corned beef, cheeses, condiments on an onion roll My friend ordered her favorite #BristolFilet. For tea I chose their #DarkRoastMate served in a French Press and this was a great cup of tea First time having tea from a press too and now glad I ordered once seated. Our server explained how to pour the perfect cup. I topped off dinner with #PersimmonPoundCake Note: I took home half a sandwich and chips and put it in the fridge for a couple of days. The chips were soggy but when I put them in the air fryer it actually crisp up and was tasty

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for a few years but never did. I came before they opened and there was already a line forming. When we were let in, we were sat by the fireplace downstairs which was very nice since it was cold and raining outside. I think the interior is pretty cute and cozy. There's only four tables downstairs by the entrance. The staff there are very friendly and seemed so relaxed the entire time I was there. I was able to try two of their drinks, the Lemon Lime Maté and the Hibiscus Deli Cooler. Both were very refreshing and not too tart or sweet. I also got the Salmon Chowder and Chili to share. The cups come with a slice of their sourdough bread which was amazing. The bread was warm, buttery and soft. Both the chowder and chili were tasty but I prefer the chowder more. For my main entree, I got the Southwest Rancher but I was able to try two others. Southwest Rancher (5/10): It was decent but I think there was a bit too much of the hickory sauce and it overpowered the taste of the sandwich. My sandwich bread was also super soggy which was so disappointing because the parts of the bread that wasn't wet tasted really good. All the liquid that came out of it ended up drenching my chips and making them soggy too. Reuben (7.5/10): A solid Reuben. The bread was nicely toasted and there was a balance amount of ingredients. Bristol Bay (9/10): This was my favorite out of the three sandwiches I tried. The tartar sauce was so good and the salmon tasted very fresh and was not dry at all. For dessert, I got the Persimmon Pound Cake which was so delicious. It was served warm with a caramel glaze on top and chopped walnuts. For me it's a little too sweet to eat entirely by myself but perfect to share if you also don't have that much of a sweet tooth.

Yelp
Amazing food and friendly service, lots of different options for allergies, and everything tasted very fresh and natural! The place is very beautiful with many different lounge areas and pretty non harsh lights and beautiful features with plants and wood and iron work!
