73,000sf Luxury Theater and Dining Complex Debuts in the Gaslamp - Eater San Diego

"Downtown San Diego gains a new entertainment wonderland this week with the premiere of Theatre Box, which combines a luxury movie theatre with nine bars and six food venues spread across the two story, 73,000-square-foot space. The multi-million dollar transformation of the city block, formerly Reading Cinemas Gaslamp, is a partnership between Hollywood’s historic TCL Chinese Theatre and Sugar Factory, which runs glitzy eateries around the globe. It debuts today, with a celebrity-powered grand opening scheduled for Friday, December 14, when Grammy award-winning artist Armando Christian Perez, aka Pitbull, will be honored as part of the theater’s iconic “hand and footprint ceremony” and actor, comedian, and San Diego native Nick Cannon will perform a DJ set." - Candice Woo

Hollywood’s Historic Chinese Theater Coming to San Diego - Eater San Diego

"Eater has more details on Theatre Box, the luxury theatre, dining, and entertainment complex coming to the Gaslamp later this fall. Occupying a solid city block downtown at Fifth Avenue and G Street, the project replaces the long-shuttered Reading Cinemas Gaslamp, replacing it with a new two-story, 73,000-square-foot building that will combine the movie-going experience with six food and drink venues." - Candice Woo

I LOVED this place!! -FOOD- I got a chocolate milkshake ($8 for 16 oz) & sprinkle donut ($2.50) and they were both good!! Inside the movie, I ordered fries ($7) and they were too salty, won't order again. My only critic was that the food doesn't have the amount of calories. -SERVICE- Great service! Inside the movie theater, the waiters were very fast, quiet, and very polite. Ordering didnt interrupt the movie experience. -MOVIE THEATER- Great movie quality! LOVED the seats! Most comfortable movie I have ever been to ans the seats are recliners 😍 lots of leg room space too. -RECOMMEND- Yes!! Everyone should go 😍 I will most definitely come back!

I don't like providing negative reviews but there were so many things that lowered the rating at the theater box. When we arrived, the lobby was under maintenance and it looked rather abandoned. The guard was very helpful and gave us directions to where the theater was located (upstairs via the elevator). When we got inside, none of the overhead lights were on so it was very dark and we were informed that particular theater room had not had functioning lights for a while, the trays at our seats were not clean. Since we were the first to arrive for the movie, we asked to have them wiped down but it was a little while before they came through. It's a full service theater that provides a selection from the Sugar Factory downstairs but only one of the 2 seats' service buttons worked. It was a while before someone actually came to take our order. The main screen was dirty, or possibly damaged, so the picture quality was not great and during quieter moments in the movie we could hear the sounds from the adjacent theater showing through the wall. I'm sure some of these things are due to Covid creating budget issues but this theater needs updating in a lot of ways.

Great location. Surrounded by many parking options. I visited the movie theatre on the second floor. Seats are comfortable/recline and each come with an attached tray for food/drinks as well as a service button. The first floor can be very busy/loud so if you like a more quiet environment I recommend enjoying a drink or a meal in the bar area on the second floor. I had the watermelon punch goblet which had just the right amount of sugar/sweetness which is made possible by adding the correct amount of ice to the beverage. Overall a very luxurious experience.

Terrible experience. The a/c was off and they couldn't turn it on, so it was uncomfortably hot. They didn't do any food or drink service until about an hour into the movie, so I had to miss part of the movie getting drinks myself. Lastly, the light in the projector room was on. They said the only person who can turn it off was the manager, and the manager wasn't in that night, so we had a bright light shining behind us the entire time. Given how much we paid, this was perhaps the worst movie going experience I have had. It looks like I'll be going to The Lot next time.

Second time here, all was good until I bought 2 non alcoholic Virginia Strawberry Lemonades for $20.47 a piece total $40.94 with tax. Purchased them thinking my son and I could take the cup (plastic( as a souvenir, but come to find out that the we were followed to restroom and as soon as we walked out of the restroom Mr “In Charge” in a Salmon pinkish sport jacket asks if we paid for them and if I had my receipt. I showed him my receipt and laughed because I could not believe I was being question by Theater Box Management and then Mr Manager says that security tracked us through CCTV and that I didn’t pay for the “souvenir option” and if I enjoyed the drinks with a smirk and nervousness in his voice....I told him I couldn’t believe how pity it was for them to track us down to the restroom for two plastic cups.... geez! But good customer service from Sean Vaums

It was our first time and we really enjoyed our time there. The seats are super cool and we had dinner served to us while watched the movie. They need more blowers in the bathrooms for sure .. but besides that it was great. I would bring a blanket of you run cold .. I was fine but saw lots of people w them. This felt like a real date.

Theater Box was great! Comfortable seats and great theater. Snacks were great but a little expensive. Large public parking garage a few blocks away. Fun experience if you're in town and want to see a movie.

My wife and I went to see Avengers End Game here in late April and wow- what a find! Love the location, the prices, the service, and the fact that they serve you in your seats. The theater itself is part of the Sugar Factory but is upstairs and has a full menu of food, drinks, and alcoholic beverage. The seats in the theater are overstuffed leather recliners and leave lots of space to stretch out and watch the movie. You can push a button on your seat and a waiter comes and serves you. The menu has lots of regular items as well as some really cool unique meals, snacks, and drinks. I had the Cheesey Cheeseburger (it has Mac and cheese in it) and a chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich. The wife and I were pleasantly surprised with the facility, the upscale service, and the prices (which were very comparable to what you’d expect to pay at an entry level theater). Hands down our new favorite place to see movies in San Diego.
