The 5 Best Vietnamese Restaurants in San Francisco

"Pho takes center stage at the Quan family’s San Jose mainstay. Tile floors and rosewood-tinted chairs decorate the space, while walls hung with photos of Vietnamese dishes keep the focus on food. It is really the pho with a broth of star anise, clove and ginger, topped with perfectly rare beef that is a true gem. Even the regular-sized portion is enormous." - The MICHELIN Guide

The food here is really good. Be ready to come with an empty stomach because the serving are huge. The fish on the hot plate is super yummy and I love that you can make your own goi guon with whatever you like. Remember if you can't eat it all, just make up the left overs and take them home! It gets really busy but you can tell why. Must try!

Google
Had the famous catfish here. Each piece was succulent and tasty. It’s fun making spring rolls. Note that although the menu says it feeds 2, it can definitely feed 3 or possibly 4 people. Pro tip: go ham on the sauce and lettuce. It makes the experience even better!

Google
Thien long had been around for as long as I can remember and the staple of this place is the sizzling fish platter. It comes with an assortment of veggies, mam ruoc (the stinky stinky) sauce, noodles, and rice paper. This platter can serve 2-3 people as it depends how thick your rolls are. I’ve tried a few other dishes over the years but the fish one is the best. Most of the tables will have offer this. Another way I like to eat it is ordering it with half beef so you don’t get tired of the fish. This pls e looks dingy inside but don’t like that fool you. That means the food is great.

Google
One of the restaurants that open late in the area. Crispy chow fun w/ beef is decent. Grilled fish w/ thin noodle is delicious with a big portion. Quick services and nice staffs. If the customers forget any belongings, they will hurry to return.

Google
36B is excellent and the house special that most people come to try. Unique Vietnamese dish where you make your own salad roll with the fried fish, vermicelli, and fresh herbs. Highly recommend the food!

Google
Not the best Vietnamese food I’ve tired but very good. Tried the turmeric fish wrap and shaking beef with tomato rice, both quite delicious. Portion sizes are large, just wished there was just more protein. Service was good but could be more attentive. Only accept cash or Zelle.

Google
Yummy lunch. Stopped by to have their famous grill fish. It was quite busy when we arrived. We got the table right away. The interior is standard. We ordered spicy and sour seafood rice noodle soup, grill fish, and chow fun with stir fry seafood and veggie. All are yummy, and the portion is generous. The vietnsmese coffee is also good. It is not too sweet. The highlight dish is the grill fish. It is for 2 people but it can feed more. Service is quick. It is good for the group. It is cash only. It has an atm machine inside.

Google
Had to try the grilled fish wraps. Totally worth the hype !! I recommend trying out the green leaves separately before hand as they may not suit your palate and hence spoil the wrap. It’s a fun meal experience with your loved ones to bond over DIY wraps. The fish comes in a bed of dill and onion with a flame base . If you want the fire out sooner, please do so as it may char the onions otherwise. Just the grilled fish by itself is so good too. They give a fermented fish sauce with rice crispy. I suggest tasting a drop first. This place is a gem.

Yelp
This is the best cha ca la vong (turmeric dill fish) in the Bay! Everything is so good here. Pho, beef salad, rice plates, you name it. But seriously - you have to try cha ca la vong first and foremost. One order can feed 2-3 people and it's so fresh, tasty, and delish. Service is quite nice. If you ask to modify something or get extras of anything, they are prompt and polite. Unlike Pho Kim Long (sorry - I love their pho and bun rieu but let's be real, they can be very rude!). I wish this was next to my house. I could eat here every day.

Yelp
We usually come here just to get the grilled fish (cha ca la vong), and have had great experiences. We decided to bring some friends here tonight to share the experience, and they really enjoyed the food. This place really hits the spot, but unfortunately, our visit left a sour taste in our mouth despite the food being delicious. While most of the staff we interacted with were helpful, one of the staff (female, younger and wearing glasses) was unbelievably rude. From making sarcastic comments and interrupting us (with said sarcasm) while we were asking questions, to a lack of basic service, e.g. filling water cups when empty, it dampened our positive memories of this restaurant. Also, this place is cash only... so bring enough. There is an ATM on site. Parking can also be challenging on weekends during peak hours.

Yelp
Came here specifically for the Cha Ca La Vong (36B) , and left quite satisfied. Cash only spot, but Zelle is also accepted. Very casual eatery with wide open tables and a bustling atmopshere. More local hangout space than quiet meal spot. It does get pretty packed at peak hours, but still manageably so. Service is pretty fast once you get your order in; definitely peak fast and efficient! Despite it getting busy we still got checked in on and weren't forgotten so kudos to staff for taking care of us. You settle the bill up front after you're done though, which took us a little bit to realize, but no harm in a slow chat after the meal is done. We just rolled with their stir fried beef and grilled fish combos (36A and 36B) for simplicity of a 4 person group and quantity-wise it worked out pretty well. My first exposure to turmeric fish wraps, but it was one heck of a first to be sure. We seemed to get a complimentary order of a fried sesame batter served with a tangy (and potent!) fish sauce. Both orders were fantastic on flavor and texture of the main meats; not a single dry piece and flavor was well balanced without anything being overwhelming. All fixings were pretty darn fresh. Figuring out how to optimally wrap things was a rather entertaining ordeal but we worked things out pretty fast. Only critique/downside is the beef platter tends to get a smidge *too hot* with the burning flames underneath so there was a tendency for it to burn. Since we had them put out to stop them burning it ended up with some of the onions still being a bit raw on the fish side though. Seems like the fish plate is a bit better off with raw veg buffer than the beef so a bit of practical balancing would do them some good and avoiding scorch marks.

Yelp
This place can definitely get busy and they only accept cash. The service is good. Their Banh Xeo is huge and delicious. It was cooked perfectly. I do wish it had more meat inside because it was mainly filled with bean sprouts. I enjoyed the Bon Chien Trung the most. It went so well with the sauce and I liked the texture. Definitely one of the better Vietnamese restaurants in the area. I will definitely be back to try the other food items.

Yelp
Authentic Viet restaurant for sure. I went there around 2pm on a Saturday and it was around a 15 min wait. It seems like this place is always packed but I can definitely see why after trying out their popular items on the menu. Service was fast paced due to all the tables consistently filled. ***They only accept cash or zelle when you checkout! What we ordered for 2 people Spring rolls - shrimp, veg, pork wrap in rice paper. It was delicious, they perfectly marinated the grill pork resulting in extra hint of flavor. Usually other places only use boil pork or just shrimp. The peanut sauce was a little watery though. 36B - Bun Cha Ca La Vong - grilled fish with thin noodles and vegetables. The plate came sizzling hot with white/green onions, peanuts, and fried fish. Soak the rice paper in warm water and place the noodles, cucumber, mint, lettuce, and fish all together. It comes with two dipping sauce - regular fish sauce and another umami salty shrimp paste. I recommend using both. The bite was refreshing, crunchy yet soft, and fish was tenderrr!! So delicious and it's a huge portion. We couldn't finish it between 2 girls.

Yelp
Family brought me over to this place, and the food was AMAZING. Everything my family ordered was packed with flavor and they give so much per serving! We had about 5 different dishes and they were all delicious!! The food also came out really quickly. I will say that we were there around 3pm on a weekday, so it wasn't too packed. The service and ambiance of the restaurant itself are more on the average side, nothing too special, but nothing bad! The food really makes this place 10/10! I also like how all their takeout packaging is just at the back of the restaurant so you can just get it yourself and you don't have to wait for a server. This place is great if you just want some really good food and nothing too fancy. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Revisited while in town, and it didn't disappoint. Of course our go to was the fried catfish with fresh vegetables. Always a hit at the table and such a fun experience! It literally brought everyone together. You'll receive a bowl of water, a large platter of fresh herbs/vegetables, noodles, a large sizzling platter of fried catfish with onions, veggies, with peanuts, and a plate of round rice paper. Your goal is to dip the round rice paper in the water to soften, then add all the fresh goodies with the fish, and lastly, roll it up to make a spring roll. I'm talkin yum heaven!!!!!! We also ordered: Fried wontons- deelish! My second fave. The Filling consisted of flavorful shrimp and ground pork. Then, dipped it into some hot chili sauce... even better. Beef soup with noodles- ok, I didn't care for the broth too much, a little on the saltier side. Crispy chow fun with chicken and vegetables- My third fave. I literally thought the chow fun was a fish cake, but it was actually a rice cake that's been fried- it went perfect with the chicken and vegetables! Always a great experience here with friends. Cash only!

Yelp
This place was busy and for good reason! It was about a 10 minute wait on a Sunday afternoon and the wait was worth it. My friend and I shared the spring rolls as an appetizer and then grilled fish with thin noodles as our main dish. Everything was so tasty and the food came out fast. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone I know.

Yelp
Quality has decreased for the recent visit. Pho is pretty good but seafood one was a meh. The signature fish pot was not as good as Kim Long, pretty average.
google avatar

Alden C.

Yelp
The food was better here before covid. However, I still enjoy coming here for their fish spring rolls that you can roll yourself. The experience of that alone keeps me coming back. The pho here is average, but for the amount of protein they pack in your bowl makes up for a lot.
google avatar

Yelp
Doesn't accept credit card so very inconvenient when you have a big party. Surprised that a restaurant wouldn't take credit card nowadays. Who carry cash anymore?
google avatar

Yelp
If you happen to be in the area and craving some Chinese comfort food, this place is a good option. The restaurant is quite spacious, bright, and clean. The staff is friendly, and it seems to be a family-owned business. The food looks and smells delicious (especially if you can see all the dishes being served around you). The portions are generous, so the prices are reasonable and justified. Be aware: this place is cash only.
google avatar

Gina O.

Yelp
Heads up it is cash only establishment but they also take Zelle. I thought it was worth it! We ordered the A1 fresh spring rolls with shrimp and it was refreshing and delicious! It was paired with a peanut sauce with added an extra kick of flavor. I ordered the #40 crispy chow fun w/ stir fried beef and vegetables and it was filling and savory! I also added some chili oil on top which made it taste even better. When you are done you pay at the counter and can pick up to go containers there as well. The space was neat and clean and the service was quick. They had a TV playing a football game that we were following so it was nice to have something to watch. It's a busy plaza but there's a lot of parking. I'd go back again :)

Yelp
I've been here a few times with friends and coworkers. My wife had never been here but wanted to try out their specialties. 36B. Bún Chả Cá Lã Vọng: Grilled fish with thin noodles and vegetables (serves two persons). There was an additional charge for rice paper - which we did. This is a fun dish to make your own spring roll with noodles, asian herbs, vegetables (cucumbers, green leaf lettuce), and tumeric fish. It's a white fish, not sure if it's swai, rockcod, or tilapia. But lightly fried with a tumeric batter which is served on a sizzling serving tray with onions, fresh dill sprigs, and roasted peanuts. It is a nice touch, as it keeps your (already cooked) fish pieces hot/warm. But make sure to monitor it. Otherwise, it will burn everything. Ask your server to put out the flame when you are satisfied. The dish also comes with two dipping sauces - shrimp paste (mam tom) and mixed fish sauce (nuoc cham). 40. Phở Áp Chảo Bò Dòn: Crispy chow fun with stir-fried beef and vegetables. The first time I tried this, I didn't think it was flavorful at all. Tonight, I thought it had a good Asian traditional brown gravy sauce. The beef was tender, and the vegetables were cooked perfectly. The place was crowded and busy. The service was nice and friendly!

Yelp
My friends and I decided to come here before catching a movie down the street. We arrived around 6:30pm on a Friday evening and we were surprised it wasn't packed like it usually is. There was even plenty of parking. As soon as we sat down we were greeted and the server took out drink orders and we ordered our mains soon after. I ordered a Vietnamese iced coffee and it was very good. If you love strong iced coffee you'll like this. It does have condensed milk Incase your diary intolerant. What we ordered: #46 BBQ chicken and fried egg over rice- served with a small soup #59 Chow fun with stir fry vegetables Chicken pho with fish noodles Vegetable pho soup Vietnamese iced coffee All our food was good and so was the service. My bbq chicken plate did take a lot longer than I thought it would. After my friends received their mine come out much longer I even had to ask how much longer. I'm not sure if this is the norm for this dish but if you get the BBQ chicken dish, order it right away. Their food and service is good. I recommend their business!

Yelp
It's been a good while since I've eaten here! My favorite dish is their grill fish where you get to wrap it yourself with +$3 for rice paper! It's such a a flavorful dish, if you eat it by itself, it will be salty so definitely eat it with the vermicelli and veggies to balance it out! The fried egg rice cake was also surprisingly good as well, I do think it was a bit pricy for that dish but the price and the amount for the grilled fish was so worth it in my opinion! Parking can be a struggle on weekends, but you can also just park across where Target is at, a bit of a walk to help you digest the food afterwards! Service was quick, don't expect much because it's the type where you come eat, they do their job and that's it type of service haha Would definitely come back again for more!

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night with my husband and shared a few dishes together before going to a concert. Upon entering, I was immediately greeted to a full house and the hostess seating me. My husband and I shared the Turmeric fish, shaking beef rice plate and 3 bean che. A few moments later, the server comes back with utensils and offers to sit us at a larger table since the the three dishes I ordered would not fit at the two person table. Five minutes later, all of our food came out and the turmeric fish was served on a hot plate over a burner. I highly recommend ordering the rice paper along with the turmeric fish as it comes with thin noodles and assorted veggies to wrap the fish in. It is an additional $3. Everything tasted very homey and all the families who were eating here seemed like it was a place they come to frequently. I enjoyed the environment and the comfort dishes very much. The shaking beef is just ok. I would recommend the 3 bean che and fish. I can't wait to come back to try the other items on their extensive menu.

Yelp
Food - chicken pho - broth was tasteless. Chicken was chewy. Honey dew drink - tasted like flavored ice cream

Yelp
Raising my rating after my recent visit. This time around, I must say... the Bun Cha Ca La Vong is SOOOO GOOD. Probably the best you can get in town. I have been to Pho Kim Long many times, which is their main competitor... but Thien Long takes the cake for best tumeric fish! The fish is fragrant and very flavorful. The portion was perfect for two of us to share. Great date night food!! The vegetables were all fresh and well cleaned. They gave a lot of variety too. I will definitely be back to eat this again. Overall, medicore pho... but amazing fish wrap!!!
google avatar

Ivory B.

Yelp
Authentic and tasty Vietnamese cuisine at Thien Long! This restaurant is super crowded but seems to be handling the crowd quite well. Food to the table is fresh, authentic, and delicious. The portion is huge so make sure you are with someone to share. Bon Appetite!
google avatar

Yelp
Got the turmeric fish and grilled beef combo. This is very filling and had a lot of flavor. Typically this is served for 2 people. There are so many options here! These 2 person combos seem to be very popular. It comes with a side of herbs and noodles. Definitely need to try this again!
google avatar

Yelp
Thien Long continues to be one of my favorite and most consistent restaurants in San Jose. If you're looking for a Vietnamese Restaurant in San Jose to introduce friends and family to delicious Vietnamese food, take them here. There are so many yummy Vietnamese food dishes and options for everyone to choose from. What we ordered: Bánh Bột Chiên Trứng Chả Cá Lã Vọng Pad Thai Com Suon Bo Dai Hang The Bánh Bột Chiên Trứng and Chả Cá Lã Vọng are our go-to everytime we visit. For this visit we tried the Pad Thai to satisfy our Pad Thai cravings. It wasn't the best, but was loaded with protein and flavorful. I enjoy chewier rice noodles for my pad thai. My niece enjoyed her Com Suon Bo Dai Hang. The meat was tender, and it was a pretty hearty dish with rice and veggies. It's a cash-only restaurant so bring cash!
google avatar

Angelina L.

Yelp
Went on Sunday afternoon and the place was packed! It is CASH ONLY! Turmeric fish - this is def the highlight. Fish was so smooth with a slight crisp texture, seasoned well. Didn't smell fishy at all. It came with some rice noodle and we added the rice paper. Wrapped the fish with the veggies and dipped on the fish sauce, it was very light and fresh and fulfilling at the same time. Good amount to share for 2 people if that's the only thing you're getting. But if you are getting more items, the fish could feed 3-4 people. Banh xeo - the pancake was huge and filled with shrimp, pork and A LOT of bean sprouts. On the bland side if eaten by itself. Shaken beef - a good amount of beef mixed with peppers and onions. The beef was not melty tender but not really tough either. The restaurant is in a plaza with plenty of parking spaces although parking might be tough when you come om weekends.

Yelp
Friends and I came for lunch and the large restaurant was pretty empty. They had about 5 parties but a bunch of seating was still available. No wait essentially, but the parking lot plaza was pretty full. We got seated and service was pretty quick. Pho takes 5-10min to come out, 15-20min for turmeric fish, 25min+ for com tam. 8/10 Turmeric Fish Special for 2 $32.95 - Fish had a very light cripsy batter exterior and mostly was super soft and flaky inside. Turmeric flavor was also light. Side of veggies was fresh, vermicelli was cooked not too soft (still had a bit firmness and bounce), and rice paper ($3 extra) was definitely not needed but we ordered 1 order and it was more than enough. Fish also came on a grill that kept the fish hot, but grab the onions from the bottom before they burn! 8/10 Com Tam Dac Biet $16.95 - Came with broken rice (standard texture that was not too soft/moist or hard/dry so they did it well), steamed egg (a good medium firmness but could use a bit more flavor, pork chop that was pretty thin but flavor was great, shrimp paste that was pretty crispy skin wrapped around juicy shrimp filling (bomb), and then shredded pork was meh. Overall, both dishes were good but was not really a wow.
google avatar

Jacklyn G.

Yelp
Btw this place is cash only (and they have an ATM inside near the bathrooms)! I love to come here for the grilled fish (#36B) and add the rice paper! The grilled fish is served hot with dill and onions (lowkey the best part). Aromatics and the sizzle from the hot plate are chef's kiss. On the side, they provide various herbs, cucumber, lettuce, noodles, and sauces for a personal make your own spring roll experience. This dish satisfies my craving every time. Plenty for 2-3 people! I've had the grilled beef version before but it was alright. Although I haven't gotten it myself, I heard you can get half beef and half fish. I've also had their beef pho - the soup base was alright but beef was so tender!! Their banh xeo is humongous and the bun rieu is okay. They have a lot of seating but can get busy during dinner time on weekends. The service is fast and nice!

Yelp
LOVE LOVE LOVE getting their fried turmeric fish spring rolls. Growing up, my family would always eat this dish, but the place we went to closed down. When I found out Thien Long also serves this dish, I knew I had to try them! I've had this place 3-4 times since and everyone I bring here seems to enjoy the food. Personally, I think getting the fish spring rolls are the best here. It's so delicious when you eat it with fish sauce too! I come here STRICTLY for the fish spring rolls, not for anything else. My dad has gotten Bun Bo Hue from here, but he thought it was okay. I've also had decent hot pot, but this isn't really the spot for that either. If you want to try Vietnamese cuisine that isn't Pho or Banh Mi, definitely give this place a try.
google avatar

Alina U.

Yelp
I went here with one of my besties for dinner! She ordered a rice plate, and I ordered the tumeric fish spring rolls. The tumeric fish comes on a sizzling plate, so you have to be careful because it's hot!!! I love spring rolls so I would definitely try this place if you guys love fish! The service is wonderful. Nice people that work there, and they are attentive to you. We didn't go when it was busy,, but I'm sure they'll be attentive to you! It's right in the plaza across the street from Target so it's definitely walkable if you wanted to shop at target! Lol. Many great places to try in this plaza.

Yelp
Thien long is one of those rare restaurants that does almost everything well. Pho good, banh xeo good (and ridiculously huge), fried rice good, rice plates , drinks and desserts all good. Of course, everyone orders the bun cha ca la vong, fried fish, pretty sure every table had it. Add the side of rice paper, makes it more fun. I love Vietnamese food. It's vibrant, fresh, healthy, delicious. And still reasonably priced. Servers were friendly and helpful. As good as the fried fish was, we might try grilled beef or grilled pork next time. Wish they were closer to West SJ.

Yelp
PORTIONS: filling and hearty PRICE: appropriate, maybe even a steal! SERVICE: table side - SONIC FAST SURROUNDINGS: clean and cozy FLAVORS: Banh xeo - HUGE, loved it Cha ca la ca vong - flavorful, fantastic Free appetizer and sauce - No idea what it is but it was intensely off-putting.... It almost made me scared of the dishes to come BONUS: enough veggies to make our table a garden

Yelp
The food was good! The Pho broth was very flavorful. The Banhxeo was quite crispy. The Pho Ap was also yum with soft beef. And the inside is pretty roomy. If you happen to be around, go here. One of the best Vietnamese I have had in South Bay area. Service was pretty nice. Cash only! They let us use Zelle though!! Private lot for restaurant. I will be back with my husband to try the other dishes!

Overall, both dishes were good, but they didn't really wow us.

Yelp
I can't believe I have never written a review for Thien Long restaurant. I have been going here for more than 10 years, and pretty much everything on the menu is incredible. I think pretty much everything I have tried on the menu has so much flavor and feels like a home-cooked meal. Some of my favorite items include the shaken beef with red rice, the grilled fish with dill and DIY spring rolls, the fried radish cake with eggs, and also the bun cha Hanoi. The shaken beef is so tender and melts in your mouth. It's a hearty portion and will fill you up for sure. The grilled fish is perfect to share with a group of three people or more, and it's definitely fun if you order the diy spring rolls. If you order those on your next visit, you won't be disappointed. I have taken so many people here, and they absolutely loved the food every single time. The service here is typical of other Vietnamese restaurants where they'll take your order, and they won't show up again, LOL. But they are very nice and if you need something you can just raise your hand and they will come by. If you do go here, don't wear any nice clothes or anything that you don't want to smell. The smell of the many tables of ordering grilled fish will permeate your clothes a lot! I warned you, lol.

Yelp
What a fun meal! There aren't a lot of Vietnamese restaurants in the bay area that does turmeric fish (cha ca la vong) $33 like Thien Long. It smells great if you let it sit for a bit and let the little fire under the metal plate sizzle the dill and onions table side. You can wrap your own spring rolls (+$3 for rice paper) like Anh Hong in San Francisco. It does come with big pieces of leaf lettuce so the rice paper is not necessary. I liked how it comes with a piece of rice cracker you can put inside the spring roll. The yellow spice turmeric is great for burning fat tissues. But since the fish is fried, it negates the health benefits of this meal. On a side note, we had their seafood crispy egg noodles $16.50 as an appetizer. This was good. I wouldn't come here especially for their crispy noodles. Service was excellent.

Yelp
Overall: 4.5/5 (dine in) We came here for Mother's Day dinner around 6 PM and it was crowded. We had to wait about 20 minutes before we were seated. The service is a bit slower, & the workers had a bit of an attitude. Pho Ap Chao Bo Don - Crispy Chow Fun With Stir Fried Beef & Vegetables ($16.50): This looks great in picture & in presentation but the taste is mid. The big blocks are pho are fried flat rice noodles. They don't have any flavor ready. The sauce is also mild and just not something I enjoy. Beef was okay too. Bun Cha Ca La Vong - Grilled Fish With Thin Noodle & Vegetables ($32.95): This is meant for 2 people to share; my mom & I shared and we still had leftover. This is our go-to item whenever we come here. The fish was as good as always - the pieces were big, soft, and tasty. I wish they gave a little bit more noodles. We didn't think there was enough so we were mostly just eating the fish with the vegetables. Bun Cha Ha Noi - BBQ Pork & Pork Patties With Thin Noodle ($16.25): The BBQ pork was good but the pork patties were just okay. Gao Viet Kitchen's Bun Cha Co Linh is way better. Banh Bot Chien Trung - Fried Flour Cake With Egg ($11.25): This is also another go-to item whenever we come here. They make the flour cake so crispy. Love the flavors for this appetizer.

Yelp
Thien Long is a super solid Vietnamese place! The ambience is on par with a lot of the Vietnamese places in the area. It's casual and quick, as well as great for groups. I absolutely love the turmeric fish and making your own spring rolls! It's such a unique and delicious meal that's both tasty and entertaining. I haven't tried a lot of other menu items, but I'd love to do so in the future soon. The staff are always friendly and very quick.

Yelp
Best fish EVER. So tasty. So crispy. So yummy. So delicious. Definitely recommend if you're in the area. Or even if you're not. You can ask for rice paper on the side to make a nice wrap with fish, mint, and noodles. This is 100% my favourite restaurant in SJ :)

Yelp
Our go to Vietnamese fish wrap place. This is their famous dish. It comes on a sizzling fire with onions & peanuts, and the fish just falls apart in your mouth. I will say quality is still the same, but over the years the quantity/portions have gone down significantly less. We ran out of veggies for our wraps and had a hard time requesting some more to finish off our fish. She wanted to upcharge a ridiculous amount for more. Service is mild.. don't expect much. It's more for the authentic food. Plenty of tables, but it could get crowded on the weekends for lunch or for dinner. *bring cash with you!!*

Yelp
We came near closing before the last call and we were seated quickly. We knew exactly what we wanted so we ordered quick. The grilled fish here is always a good choice. Comes out piping hot with noodles and veggies to wrap in rice papers (extra $3). Unpopular opinion but I really like dipping my rolls in their shrimp paste sauce. The fish sauce is a classic but the shrimp sauce is definitely an acquired taste. The bun rieu oc came with a lot of periwinkle however, the flavor was a bit weak. Definitely remember to add the shrimp paste and chili it comes with for a more flavorful experience. Not pictured but we also got the salted fish fried rice which could have used more salted fish and the fried wonton.

Yelp
My friend and I celebrated a milestone of our friendship, and a great way was getting pho for a windy day. There may not be parking in the plaza but there's ample street parking or you can park at target and cross the street to reach the restaurant. We arrived on at 7:30 pm a Wednesday evening and we were seated immediately. The place is homey but innovative with its aesthetic decor and bright lights. It's a great place to dine in since everyone is enjoying the quality food of the establishment. NOTE: They accept cash only, and have an ATM inside in case you only brought your credit card. Service was quick and efficient with the pho and spring rolls delivered within 10 minutes of ordering. The spring rolls were delicious, with lots of shrimp and pork inside. The peanut sauce was top quality that was smooth and creamy. The pho was top tier with its translucent broth and tender slices of pork. Nice additives of spring onion, warm bean sprouts, and jalapeños. Great pho place in east San Jose!

Yelp
the restaurant is located in a big plaza with a ton of other shops. the plaza itself has a lot of parking spots but it's usually pretty busy so it can be hard to find a spot. we came at 6:30 on a sunday night and it seemed busy inside but we still got a table immediately. inside was decently loud but tables are spaced out enough to have conversations. we got service pretty fast and ordered almost immediately. steam chicken: 4/5 chicken had good flavor, especially when you paired it with the sauce they had. i thought it was simple but prepared well. the first few pieces were pretty juicy but some of the bigger pieces were a bit dry turmeric fish: 5/5 this is their signature dish. the outside of the fish is still crispy while the inside is nice and hot. the fish itself has really good flavor. this fish is also paired with a bunch of accoutrements and you can order rice paper for a bit extra (i recommend this). the fun part is wrapping the fish into spring rolls and eating it like that. one of these orders is enough to serve 2 people. would definitely coming here just for the turmeric fish and trying it out! this place usually only takes cash so be aware of that

Yelp
The food is very good. The ambiance is noisy since it's a small place. The service is medium. The issue is the owner takes cash only. I don't recommend for a big party.

Yelp
It's a must for me to visit Thien Long anytime I visit San Jose. My go to order is the grilled fish with thin noodle & vegetables + rice paper. So good!

Yelp
Great cha ca La vong. For sure best in the area. Coming from SoCal it's nice to finally have a decent place to eat my favorite dish. Only downside here is that don't give enough of the lettuce. Service is ok. Standard for the area.

Yelp
Mmmm finally tried the cha ca la vong (menu item #36B) based on recommendations from friends! I was definitely surprised by how much food came out and how full the table was from this 1 order haha, definitely enough food for 2 average sized adults! We ended up having a little leftovers too. The cha ca la vong came with so many plates of ingredients including noodles, greens (lettuce, herbs, cucumbers), rice paper, rice cracker, sauces, and the main item, the crispy tumeric fish over cooked onions, green onions, and dill. It was fun to make your own rolls with the rice paper, kind of like cooking your own meat at korean BBQ. The food was tasty and you can add the combination of ingredients that you like which is great if you come with picky eaters haha. If you have never used rice paper before, it might take some time and practice to get a good roll, just remember not to overwater or wet the rice paper! I would definitely come here again to try the cha ca la vong again. However, I wish the tables were a bit bigger, literally the entire table is full from 1 order of the cha ca la vong! I almost forget, also tried the Vietnamese iced coffee, definitely got my caffeine jolt from that!

Yelp
We went to Thien Long to try the turmeric fish and that was exactly what we ordered. Since we were only a party of 2, we really could not physically eat more than that. The fish was flaky and made for good fresh roll. I would say definitely worth it to pay the $3 to get the rice papers and they gave us a decent amount of it. I wish there were steamed bean sprouts or some pickled carrots or daikon. That would make for a perfect bite. Food was good and service was good. Ambiance is your typical Vietnamese restaurant. It was fine. It is the kind of restaurant to go for the food, not necessarily for the ambiance. I plan to go back with a bigger party so we can sample their other dishes.

Yelp
Thien Long serves bun cha ca la vong - crispy grilled turmeric fish over a bed of green and white onions and dill with a side of vermicelli noodles, rice crackers, a variety of veggies, and dipping sauce! You can make your own vermicelli bowl or order rice paper (for an extra cost) and make your own spring rolls!! I love both options and this is definitely a portion for 2-3 ppl. We have dined in and done take out for the fish and have enjoyed it both times. They package everything nicely for you when you do take-out. Only thing is I wish they would put the steaming hot fish in a different container as it doesn't seem safe to put it in a clear plastic container. Make sure to keep your receipt if you order take out as they get so many orders and may get confused! Parking lot in this plaza can get a bit crowded and busy.

Yelp
They have great viet food here! Very traditional. The bathrooms and decor is mediocre, so expect good food only!

Yelp
Came on a Saturday for dinner at 7:40pm. Put my name down on the waitlist. It was packed to the brim. Every seat was taken. At least it let me know the food was good. Finally got a table 25 mins later. Ordered the highly talked about Cha Ca La Vong. I was by myself and wanted the version for two with the grill, but luckily they talked me out of it and had me order the smaller version without the tabletop grill as I was stuffed silly after. Opted for a side of rice paper (extra $). Totally worth it. Food came ok quickly and portions were larger than they look in my photos. Everything was dang delicious and am planning on coming back with a buddy to share in this experience.
