"Stumptown Coffee Fix When you've been called "the best coffee in the world" by the likes of NPR and the NY Times, you've got the bar set pretty high. Thinking Cup does justice to those beans, and is a really great spot to get your morning or afternoon fix. Their cafe menu offers breakfast and lunch sandwiches, and freshly baked pastries, killer tiramisu will finish you off nicely. They also have another location in the North End."

Where to Warm Up With Boston’s Most Comforting Mugs of Hot Chocolate

"Thinking Cup’s French hot chocolate is described as a drinking chocolate (read: ultra-rich), made with 64% Tainori Valrhona. If you sit in the window at the Tremont Street location, you can watch snow fall on the Common while you stay nice and warm inside with a steamy cup of chocolate. There are also locations in Back Bay and the North End." - Dana Hatic, Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Google
Love this as a local, best espresso based coffee drinks in Boston, Stumptown beans; latte (no flat white option) is rich, strong and served as Australians love their coffee. Staff are so busy they can be short with customers who have questions. Baked goods, blueberry options are all great!

Google
My friends and I got the banh mi, two avocado toasts, and the smoked salmon bagel. Each was far too dry: the banh mi did not come with enough aioli and the staff were palpably displeased when we requested more, the smoked salmon bagel didn’t actually list that it came with cream cheese on the menu and came with hardly enough to taste anyway, and the avocado toast had nothing to moisten it at all so the avocado was able to actually fall off of the bread. For our second avocado toast, we asked for it to be on a bagel instead of sourdough—you’ll see in the photo. The toppings listed on the menu compared to what we were presented with were not worth the cost. There was literally one crumble of goat cheese. The original avocado toast came with sourdough and was even smaller. The bagels themselves were actually a great texture and we wish they could have been paired with satisfactory sandwiches.

Squeezed between Boston's gray granite facades, Thinking Cup manages to pack more studious energy per square foot than a library during finals week. Their matcha latte arrives like a zen garden in a cup, each frothy swirl suggesting the barista might have a side gig in fine arts. While you won't find eggs benedict or hair-of-the-dog remedies here, they've mastered the art of grilled cheese alchemy, though at $7.99, you might want to solve a few differential equations to justify the splurge. The brick-walled space plays musical chairs with an ever-rotating cast of characters: bleary-eyed students transforming caffeine into thesis pages, locals performing Olympic-level laptop camping, and the occasional tourist wondering why everyone else seems to know exactly what "cold brew with a nitro finish" means. The weekend morning rush creates a sort of caffeinated musical chairs, where securing a table requires the strategic planning of a chess grandmaster. The wooden benches along the wall offer prime real estate for observing this peculiarly Boston ballet of coffee seekers and sandwich enthusiasts. Fair warning: if you're planning to gather your book club of more than four people, you might have better luck finding free parking in the North End. But for solo contemplation or caffeinated tête-à-têtes, Thinking Cup proves that sometimes the best thinking happens over a perfectly poured cup.

Second time here, first since the pandemic. Glad we remembered because it's just as good. Tuesday lunchtime and not too busy, surprisingly but I think we just beat the noon rush. We got the Smokin' Jamaican on gluten free bread, the GF tiramisu and a cup of Joe. The sandwich was delicious, grilled in the panini press with some gorgeous grill marks. The overriding flavour is definitely jerk and mango chutney with the turkey being more background and I really enjoyed that. The tiramisu is tempting to look at (see pic) with professional layers and a beautiful whipped cream topping with chocolate shavings. Hard to believe it's gluten free. The coffee is really good if not a touch pricey but it's downtown Boston and there's a Bucks on every corner so they gotta hold their own. All told, $25 plus tip for a sammich, dessert and a coffee. Not too weird for 2025. See you on the road.

Did taste test thinking cup cappuccino vs next door bakery cappuccino, of course not even in same league. Thinking cup never disappoints and is definitely underrated!

I stopped in for a cup of hot chocolate today. Oh boy! was it good! It was rich, chocolaty, with the right amount of sweetness (meaning not overly sweet). And furthermore, the presentation was definitely pleasing to the eyes. I'd definitely go back for more!

Google
Super cool little coffee shop, would highly recommend. The coffee was delicious and there’s breakfast sandwich I got was really good too. Staff members were quick and friendly and the environment was perfect for a coffee shop. Overall I had a great experience, you should give this place a try when you’re in Boston!

Google
One of my favorite cafes. I love their vanilla latte, hot chocolate, breakfast burrito, and carrot cake. The cafe itself is very cozy and has a warm atmosphere. It's very well designed and I absolutely adore the rustic and vintage feel.

Yelp
Stopped in for a breakfast sandwich and a cold brew while waiting on my friends. The sausage, egg, and cheese on english muffin was delicious and served up piping hot. And the cold brew came with its own house syrup choices, and I picked the honey cinnamon syrup option. The general vibe the place was pretty chill and I got a nice seat by the window to watch all the action happening over at the Boston Commons. I was looking for a place to work and a coffee shop, they did not have any free Wi-Fi (or any for that matter) that I could see just FYI.

Yelp
This place is across the street from Boston Common, and very busy, at least on this Sunday morning. The service wasn't particularly friendly, but the patients were beautiful and delicious and the coffee and good, too. They have pastries, coffee, sandwiches, and traditional breakfast. The prices are on spot and they are quick to boot.
google avatar

Alana K.

Yelp
My friend and I came here for an afternoon pick-me-up. There's plenty of seats and the menu is quite extensive. I had an iced herbal tea (I think it was hibiscus and cinnamon) and we shared a matcha blueberry tiramisu. I thought the cake layers were a little wet and there was a bit too much cream in the ratio. Nonetheless, it was still delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
A great little spot for sure!! Their coffees are good, small but yummy and I like some of their more creative offerings! The pastries definitely shine and I always enjoy the sandwiches. Would highly recommend getting them on the focaccia rather than sourdough but that's maybe just me. The seating is cute and always has some spots open. Staff can be a hit or miss of being lovely/no notes or being the grumpiest people alive but that's anywhere I guess.

Yelp
This seamed to be the choice of our group when walking around Boston. Great menu and massive biscotti. Pleasant staff and of course delicious smooth coffee

Yelp
Thinking Cup looks like a throwback to an earlier style of coffee shop. Its interior has darker colors and a cozy interior, in contrast to the proliferation of light wood and airy interiors. The tables, set with old newspaper clippings, hearken to bygone days as well. They don't even have wifi! What Thinking Cup does offer is a competitively priced menu. Want breakfast? A plain bagels for $2.75, or $3.50 for cream cheese. A BEC breakfast sandwich costs $5.75. Black coffee - $3.50 for a large cup. Today, I had coffee and a breakfast burrito. The burrito costs $6.75, so it comes as a smaller portion (will fill you up a bit more than a BEC, but don't expect a farmer's breakfast size). The burrito had scrambled egg, black beans, salsa, and a choice of sausage, ham, bacon, or chorizo.

Yelp
Thinking Cup is no longer the newest spot on the block for a pastry, with Bakey having opened it's doors during the pandemic. But from my handful of visits at both, I have to give it to the Thinking Cup for pleasant service, and they definitely hold their own for the pastries. I love their almond croissants, as do many others likely, since they are out of the pastry by the time I mosey over after work sometimes. But that only caused me to discover the yumminess of their sweet and savory bacon scones. So good! The seasonal pumpkin cheesecake was a nice light treat that wasn't too sweet.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere heavy on wood and antique decor. Seats a little too close together, but better that than not enough seats. Coffee: Went with a Honduran pour-over, which was weak and watery for the price tag, but did have some of the descriptors. Blueberry Muffin: Good size, very dense and kind of a Play-Doh texture, not that that's a bad thing. Not that sweet, also not that that's a bad thing. Had an odd cheese-danish-y flavor though. Would love to give this place another try even though they didn't wow me. Some of the other items in the pastry case looked interesting.

Yelp
I gotta give this place five stars as this was one of the best Americanos I've had. Had the lemon poppy scone as well, was not bad at all. The atmosphere was good too, a great place to start your day.
google avatar

O G.

Yelp
When they're serving Stumptown coffee, you know the brew will be good. When you try their croissants and you realize it's maybe the best one you've had in the US outside of Paris, you know their other pastries will be good. When you look at the menu board, from coffee to pastries to lunch menu and pinch yourself as you read pre-Covid pricing in a major city, downtown, you know you should come back. Again and again. This place is terrific and although the seating area in this location is smaller, it's very cozy and the whole interior design is warm and inviting. Too bad I live in LA.

Yelp
The Coffee was okay but the cake was so old and not good! To my surprise, they did not have WIFI!!! I am not going back. The grapefruit juice was alright!
google avatar

Yelp
I stopped by Thinking Cup during a work trip to Boston. My coworker and I went to grab coffee and breakfast. I had a latte and the chorizo breakfast burrito. The latte was good and burrito was delicious! Service was polite and friendly.
google avatar

Annie G.

Yelp
Good afternoon coffee shop! Stayed here over a rainy day before the Ballet show at night. Quite a vibe, old posters in the wall, and old newspapers on the table. Great place to stop by and spend a zen time.
google avatar

Ahmad G.

Yelp
I think it's overrated. It is a tight place and the people were with a very flat affect. The coffee was nothing to remember. I would work on this feedback, they definitely have a great potential given their premium location. This is coffee shop number 3785 I try..
google avatar

Raj W.

Yelp
Great flavor fresh latte. Great ambience. Hip.Vibe. You must go to this place if you wanna have a nice quiet morning with great cup of coffee.
google avatar

Rosanna B.

Yelp
Extremely rude and not welcoming at all! The skinny guy with glasses, Boston cap, and black sweater with flowers was extremely rude and was soft spoken and was impatient when I couldn't hear him. Coffee was delicious and the sandwich was okay. I won't try this location again but will check out the other two.
google avatar

Robin W.

Yelp
Very friendly service! My latte was very good. I also ordered a bagel with jam. I did enjoy the vibe of this place!
google avatar

Richard A.

Yelp
First time visitor and the vibe was chill, the service was friendly and the coffee was tasty. Missing a star due to the lack of ability to make my drink (Cortado with a pump of mocha) and the unnecessary upselling of my drink into a more expensive latte due to the size of the cup?!?. Whatever. That aside it was a cool place and I'd definitely go back.
google avatar

Adina S.

Yelp
I've been to Thinking Cup a handful of times and it's always packed, even though there's plenty of seating. It's located right on Newbury Street, so it's no wonder it's a popular spot! I usually come more for the vibes and to hang out for a bit if I'm walking around the area, which is what people there seem to be doing there most of the time. I haven't tried any of their food items, but they've got all the café classes. If I was hungry, I'd probably go to Tatte instead. However, this has more of a typical café feel if that's more of your vibe. I'll be back!
google avatar

Nina F.

Yelp
While the cafe itself was fairly spacious with ample seating, the matcha latte I ordered was one of the worst I've ever had. It was flavorless, although the price was on par with what you'd expect. Even so, the staff were nice and my bland matcha came out quick. I wouldn't come back here to try other items given the other options in the area.
google avatar

Alan P.

Yelp
If you're in the Boston area, this is a great place to stop and pick up a coffee or grab a quick sandwich! Loved the grilled cheese! The breakfast sandwich was average at best. Vibes were good!
google avatar

Yelp
Thinking cup is a delightful place to spend an afternoon. The ambiance is cozy, and the crowd that visits here tends to be quiet but plentiful. The line can certainly build up, but the staff is helpful and affable. The last time I was here I had a cup of earl grey tea. I appreciate that they serve the tea in a teapot so that I don't have to refill the pot with more hot water as I would a lone mug. I also got one of their grilled cheese sandwiches, which was well cooked and flavorful. That being said, my main gripe about Thinking cup is its lack of power outlets. I often come here to enjoy a space outside of my home while I work, and that means I need a power source for my computer. I've been able to find literally one in the entire shop, and it's not at all conveniently located. I would love to see this change so that Thinking Cup can become one of my regular work spots. As it stands, the food and service are excellent, but it's not the most convenient place for me to spend my time.
google avatar

Yelp
Thinking Cup is a charmer. When you peek in from Tremont it looks dark but what it is, actually, is extremely cozy. I've been a handful of times. My favorite is the blueberry cornmeal cake, a round muffin-like treat with moist and subtly flavored cake, and fresh blueberries. Second would be the Morning Glory muffin. I've had one of their breakfast sandwiches which was piping hot and flavorful though not with spectacular ingredients (go to Patty and Mike's for your breakfast sandwich needs). Also there is a chill vibe, very study friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice neighborhood coffee shop. They had so many pastries and I like that they had sandwiches available for breakfast. We ordered a matcha and iced coffee. Both were good. Service was quick and we had no trouble getting a table.
google avatar

Savanna N.

Yelp
Reminds me of the cute cafes you see on sitcoms. Not sure if this place is an east coast staple but all the food looked delicious, personally my food was delicious. Make sure you get your pastries warmed up! Game changer! If you're on the go, the service is quick! If you don't want to sit in the cafe and enjoy a stroll with your coffee, the Boston commons is right across the street. Cute cafe with decent pricing and solid, quick service. I wish I could have tried all the pastries but the berry pastry in the photo I posted was soooooooo good (again, warm it up!). When I come back to Boston, I'll be ordering at least 3 pastries haha.
google avatar

Alexandra P.

Yelp
Cutest cafe! Weather you want to meet up with some friends, study, or have a quick bite to eat before walking around the town this place is perfect. To eat/drink we had the following: Cappuccino: loved the design she made. Was a smooth drink and did not need any additions to it. Chai Latte: Got a large. The chai was spicy and hot - the foam on top was perfect. I sprinkled some cinnamon on top and it brought it all together. It does have a hint of sweetness to it but did not need anything additional to it. Breakfast sandwich: sausage egg & cheese on an English muffin. I did not choose the cheese but I'm guessing it's Swiss possibly. Don't know if the holes are because it's Swiss or it melted from the heat of the eggs. Would recommend to visit. They do have multiple locations too!
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
The blueberry corn cake alone is worth a visit. I've eaten a lot of pastries in my life and this was one of the best I've ever had. The breakfast burrito is solid as well. I got the chorizo with it and it's worth noting the chorizo is sliced like on a charcuterie board rather than the sausage form you would expect in a burrito. There were also had lots of gluten free baked goods and all their sandwiches can be made with gluten free bread. It had a very cozy vibe inside. Tight seating quarters though. Not ideal for big groups or strollers.
google avatar

Lindsay K.

Yelp
While recently visiting Boston for 4 days I came here everyday after loving my first visit. I ordered the honey cinnamon latte either hot or cold. It was perfectly sweet without feeling like you were consuming loads of sugar. I ate the blueberry cornmeal pastry (gluten free) along with their chia pudding which was amazing! The chia pudding doesn't look like much but it has blueberry sauce and some fruit inside that's hidden. The service was always super fast and I was out the door quickly. The ambiance is very cozy which I loved in my morning visits.
google avatar

Scott W.

Yelp
As I look across the street to Boston Common park, the start of the "Freedom Trail" we sit here sipping on our Java and having a breakfast sandwich. I come to realize that this coffee shop spectacular! Not a better way to start our day here in Boston. If you are looking for a place to stop and refuel than stop here because you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Rebecca D.

Yelp
Vibes are good - very cozy. Coffee is decent - not my favorite but not bad either. I usually just get coffee but today I got the berry financier too - very yummy. Like an almond-y mini cake. Never had a bad experience with service.
google avatar

Magda C.

Yelp
The best quiche I ever had, fluffy, plenty of veggies in the vegetarian version. So tasty. Tiramisu was just ok nothing to write about.

Dave G.

Yelp
Good food overall and good mint tea. Small nice shop, that has good seating. They have a good variety of food from sandwiches to pastries.
google avatar

Em B.

Yelp
I love the Thinking Cup! I've walked past it many times but I finally had a reason to stop in and check it out. They have a very comfortable, old school ambience and have great Stumptown coffee. The iced Chai latte I got was a little watery but I'll try another choice next time. It's a very comfortable space to meet with friends or colleagues, and have a meeting or study but it gets filled up fast so if you find a spot, you're lucky. Ambience: 5/5 Drinks: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Thinking Cup: 4.6/5
google avatar

Joe G.

Yelp
was looking forward to a selection of coffee when I saw the Stumptown Roasters sign, but was a little disappointed. they had only one coffee, and the staff didn't seem to know or care anything about the roast or attributes. took the coffee out to the park across the street and enjoyed the morning. that part was nice.
google avatar

Joy G.

Yelp
Life's too short to forego sandwiches is my new motto. So I'm embarking on a regular review of sandwiches offered in Boston and Thinking Cup's Jimmy the Greek is going to be my inaugural review. Buckle up for too many details! INGREDIENTS: I tend to gravitate towards the vegetarian option on a sandwich menu and this one called out to me immediately. On paper, the combo of red pepper hummus, goat cheese, artichoke hearts, olives, tomato, and roasted mushrooms sounded fantastic. But the tomato didn't add much taste (also, I maintain that East Coast tomatoes are crap and taste like plastic, especially raw), there were too many olives, and not enough goat cheese. My favorite components were the roasted mushrooms. STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY: This was a messy sandwich to eat. Every bite I took, something plopped out of the side. Mistakenly, I assumed the sandwich would be pressed, so the cheese could melt a little and bind onto the looser ingredients, but this was cold and the multigrain bread was a few days on the stale side. Overall grade for the sandwich: B Convenient location to Boston Common. I went a little before closing and there were plenty of seats. Service was nice, the sandwich came out super quickly. Lots of gluten-free options. On another note - it smelled a tad off inside (I thought at first it was the freshly ground coffee beans but it might have been someone's BO).
google avatar

Gregory C.

Yelp
I ordered a pour over and they said it would take 20 minutes even though there was only one person who ordered ahead of me. The cashier got snippy with me when I became visibly annoyed. Then she continued to badmouth me to the next person in line. Then they put the sandwich out without announcing it, out of spite, I assume. So, not a good experience.
google avatar

LaToya E.

Yelp
Its a great place to grab an early morning snack and a coffee.. I didnt realize how many locations this shop has when I was looking for my morning coffee shop location but this one was closest to my hotel. It was small and packed but I was able to find a seat near the back. It gave me a good view to see how friendly the staff were and how well they know their stuff. I got a latte which is fine and a quick sandwich that i loved. I do wish the place was more spacious as I wanted to sit and write for a bit but felt like I had to keep moving as it was so crowded.
google avatar

Julyana T.

Yelp
Stayed overnight in Boston during a layover, found this place on Yelp with good review and decided to stop by. On the menu, they boasted that they make their latte flavor in house fresh ... I asked for recommendation from the girl working at counter: vanilla ginger vs honey cinnamon and her rec was vanilla ginger. I requested a not too sweet vanilla ginger latte and unfortunately it is not for me (upon first sip). The ginger brings a sour-ish (acidic??) after taste and I do not like my coffee that way.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
A spot for a casual breakfast bite or sip of coffee. I prefer local coffee shops instead of Starbucks especially when I'm on vacation like I was when I visited Boston. Service was fairly quick too.

Jules H.

Yelp
The food was good, and the service was fast and friendly. Cozy environment but a very small seating area. It's probably best for takeout orders
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
Best place there is for coffee around Boston Common. It has a very popular location on Tremont that gets so busy and crowded with people chilling and studying, basically all just hanging out. Thinking Cup has a couple locations with this very good coffee along with a few pastries. A lot of indoor seats but it still gets crowded because the tables are very small and it's hard to fit things on and around. Has lots of good things at lunch too. I like this location even though it gets busy because it's close to a lot of fun things around here. Maybe it's even busier than the Newbury location is but not by a lot. This is in a location that's very popular with locals and tourists. Having such a prime location across from Boston Common makes it mostly a spot for chilling out. They usually are very busy in the morning but it still seems like such a relaxed atmosphere, maybe it's the coffee smell that makes people relaxed. Coffee is the main thing of course. It's $2 for a regular drip. They have several non dairy milks. Bagels are among the food. It's $3 and comes with a choice of cream cheese and jelly. There's also some fluffy muffins. Best coffee in Boston with a location across from Boston Common. It's on Tremont so this gets very busy especially when it's morning. This still has pretty good service and they're fast in spite of this.
google avatar

Aida M.

Yelp
The coffee tasted old, the staff was rude, and there was no Wi-Fi. The ambiance was loud. They do have plenty of seating though. Overall, a disappointing experience that I would not recommend.
google avatar

Sami L.

Yelp
Best place around Boston Common for coffee. It wasn't busy, and the wait wasn't long. I have read in other reviews that this gets problematic, but my experience wasn't anywhere near the sort. What stood out the most to us was the extensive gluten-free menu. The gluten free tiramisu was BOMB! I highly recommend the Earl Grey latte (my first time trying something like this and I was IMPRESSED!)
google avatar

Emma B.

Yelp
Came here as they have reasonably priced breakfast sandwiches. I didn't realise they serve Stumptown but it was a pretty good iced latte, they had sugar free vanilla too. The sandwich came out hot, had to wait for it to cool down a little. No outside seating, which would have been nice.
google avatar

Annie Y.

Yelp
They have limited seatings and can get pretty packed and hard to find a spot in the mornings. I ordered their Pumpkin Spice Latte, and it was good, nothing special. Recommendation(s): - Pumpkin Spice Latte Service: 5/5 Tip(s): - They accept Apple Pay
google avatar

Jeanette N.

Yelp
I love this place! Excellent coffee and right across from the park. We picked up a Boston cream pie tartlet that was outstanding.
google avatar

Taylor U.

Yelp
Some of the BEST espresso I've had. Forget Starbucks!! Their food menu is pretty extensive as well. I was visiting for work and ended up coming back here 3 times in a week. So so so good. I still think about it today. The theme is also pretty cool.
google avatar

Allen C.

Yelp
We came here a few days before the pandemic restaurant shutdown order. It was a cold night. We thought a nice cup of hot chocolate would be the perfect thing to end the evening after dinner and Thinking Cup (TC) fit the bill. TC is such a warm and cozy little shop. We found a table and proceeded to peel off our layers. Every pastry in the display looked so tempting we just had to add a couple of them to our tab. The workers were very friendly and quick to prep things for us. Our hot chocolate was nice and rich. The Fruit Tart and the Boston Cream Tart were scrumptious. We liked the vibe and enjoyed the edibles at TC. In fact, our little niece asked to return the very next day!
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
Cute place with nice vibes, mellow music, and friendly staff. Coffee was good, and the salted chocolate chip cookie was soft
